I never knew you had to get a special cable and select what refresh rate you wanted. Talk about a waste of money. Anyway, I am getting a dvi dual link or a display port, what should i get?

Edit : Just went to a local store and purchased a DP cable. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Can tell the difference when dragging mouse over desktop

Edit 2: I am not disabled

I messed up. I helped a friend build a pc but I missed a small (very important) detail.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 11:14 AM PDT

Hello BuildAPC, it's been a few years since you all kindly helped me with my build, now I must ask you to help me to help my friend with his.

For my friend I chose the Acer GN246HL 144HZ for the monitor.

I chose the MSI GTX 1660ti Ventus for the GPU.

See the problem? The gpu only has HDMI and DP. The monitor only has HDMI, VGA, and DVI-D. The problem is HDMI is limited to 60hz on the monitor.

Now I know there are adapters out there but I can't find a DP>DVI-D that supports anything above 60hz.

I feel terrible for missing such a crucial detail and disappointing my friend, so do any of you know of a way to fix this without swapping a part? Thank you BAPC.

Delidded 8700k or regular 9700k for gaming?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:30 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a 9700k (no delid) or an 8700k which I would delid. Doing some research it seems like they're about the same performance wise, but in the end I do want something I can more comfortably OC with good temps.

The thing that makes this decision tough for me is that the 8700k with all required delidding tools (delid/relid tool, paste, LM, etc.) comes out to about $35 more than the stock 9700k with no additional tools. It would be an easier decision if the 8700k were cheaper but the additional accessories for delidding bump the cost up to above the straight 9700k.

I am comfortable with delidding the 8700k and would even find it pretty fulfilling to know I manually played a hand in improving the part. But for $35 more, is the older part going to be worth it if I can get generally the same performance from a 9700k without the extra labor or risk?

If temps are going to be significantly better for the 8700k delidded, I'd go with that. But I can't find much evidence that points to that, so I wanted to see what you guys thought. This PC will be used primarily for gaming.

Pairing with an OC 8GB STRIX 1070ti and a z390 Aorus Elite mobo, air cooled with cryorig h7 which I would upgrade if I had to.

Build Complete! Upgrade from a 2500k!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:17 AM PDT

Figured it was time to move from a 2500k/1060 and get into 2019 the right way. Got a sick deal on an open box 2070 from Micro Center that still had the game redemption code available with it. Can't beat that for $400. They also had bundle deals on Ryzen processors and mobos that were excellent.

Amazing upgrade for me, especially to the 144hz monitor. Everything is super fast and crispy. Only things I brought over from my old build were SSD/HDD and PSU.

My only question is does anyone know here I can get sleeved PSU cables (not extensions) for my GPU? It takes an 8 pin (can be 6+2) and a 6pin for power.

    Build here:

    NZXT H200i Mini ITX Build

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

Hi, can you guys check this build and let me know if there's anything I should change.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mLYKr6

The only thing not correct on that list is the PSU. I'm looking at the 750w corsair SFX instead. I'm also going to buy the NZXT USB Hub as I've noticed there is only 1 usb 2.0 header on the motherboard but I'll need at least 2 - 1 for the CAM fan software in the back of the case and the NZXT cooler. Thanks

I'm interested in knowing whether the larger heatsink on the XC ultra provides any noticeable help in keeping the chip cool to warrant the extra $50, and have had a hard time finding this info online. Thanks.

I is dumdum - monitor can't connect to my RTX 2060 - Need monitor recommendations

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:06 PM PDT

    Hello wise friends!

I just purchased a brand new RTX 2060, and failed to consider my current monitor is not capable of connecting to HDMI or display port. So I need a new monitor.

I read the sidebar in r/Monitors and looked through all of the guides I could find, but with how expensive they all appear to be I would love some expert advice before I pull the trigger.

    I want:

    27"

4K (because I now have a card that can handle it) OK no 4k

Gaming capable (FPS/Action style games, so good refresh and response times)

As close to true color as possible (because I do photo editing)

Any recommendations? Obviously cheaper is better, but I also only want to buy and cry once.

New build freezes and requires hard restart (2600x, B450)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:38 PM PDT

Hi all, I recently picked up a B450 Mobo, 2600x, RAM and an SSD. I am using my old power supply and 1060 graphics card. I installed the pc together and it was running fine for an hour or so before it froze and required a hard reset. Since then I have had this happen every 15 minutes, I thought this may be due to using my old install but this freezing would also happen when trying to install windows to a new SSD.

I've to my knowledge made sure everything is fitted correctly, reseating the ram and even running it with 1 stick to see if that made a difference but no luck.

I'm going nuts trying to fix this so any help is appreciated, thank you.

Suggestions on my first build would be much appreciated.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:15 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I would appreciate everyone's feed back on my build. This is my first time building a desktop PC from scratch - in the past I have just used laptops for programming/casual gaming. However, I've recently gotten into two activities that have me thinking about purchasing a more suitable computer: (1) I have been gaming with my long distance girlfriend and (2) I have begun developing an indie game. As a result I've begun using the 3D modeling software Blender which I have found is quite taxing on my current laptop. I would also like to run modern games at reasonably high graphical settings. Both combined lead me to think I will need a relatively beefy setup to work comfortably. As I am a linux user, but plan to develop a PC game, I plan on dual booting Linux and Windows simultaneously.

    Ballpark budget is ~$1200.

As I currently live and work in Switzerland, I will most likely purchase parts here. Here's the current iteration of the build I have been working with. I would love to recieve people's honest feedback and how I can improve.

    AMD freesync over HDMI?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:26 PM PDT

So I have a HP 25f model monitor which supports 75hz, freesync, at 1080p. I have a 580 with display port. If freesync is only through display port how come the monitor only has HDMI and VGA? Do I need a display port to HDMI cable? And if that is the case does that get 75 fps??

How can I improve my PC

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

Hey guys, my games have started running much slower as of late and I want to improve my PC some. I'm not very good at analyzing the different parts and judging what to improve, so i'm unsure what parts I should mostly focus on replacing. I know for a fact many say my RAM isn't enough (8GB), but i'm unsure about how good my graphics card, processor etc is.

Games I play mostly are MMOs like Elder Scrolls Online, World of Warcraft (which is getting surprisingly uglier, with the recommended graphic settings now being at 5/10)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I upgrade my CPU from Ryzen 3 1300x to Ryzen 5 2600 and now it won't boot up. I realized that I may need to update the BIOs for my mobo to work with the 2600. My problem now is I can get the 1300X to boot either. The CPU fan, case fan and GPU fan are spinning but nothing is showing up on the monitor. I hear no sound on startup.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've made sure all the cables are fit tightly. I've used the jumper to reset CMOS.
