Setting up new devices for the network but I’m a beginner Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:05 PM PDT I have a Cisco access point that my dad gave me along with a Cisco firewall and a wireless controller. I'd like to set this up so imma need some help before I go bald trying to do this. He told me (he has experience in cyber security and networking) that as good practice I should isolate the network and configure it before putting it out on the actual network with internet access. So he told me I also need to look at the default IP address of the router and change my computers IP address to match it so once I open up the browser it should bring me to the page for its configurations. So here's the part where I get confused. I'm assuming due to the fact that since it's not plugged into the modem to get internet access, when I run "ifconfig", the enp0s-something doesn't have any assigned IP address and netmask. I had also tried doing "ifconfig enp0s-something 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0" and open up the browser with the same IP but no luck. I was trying not to ask on reddit to save myself the embarrassment of having to ask but I'm not finding much look on forums or YouTube. Most of the stuff end up coming back as "How to Setup your Linux computer as a router" when all I want to do is "Setup my router using a Linux computer". [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:45 PM PDT Hello! I am a current high school senior going into college as a Computer Science major. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3558, and I've had it for years so I'm planning on getting a new laptop before school starts next fall. I want to be able to dual boot with Linux (specifically Ubuntu 18.04), which for some reason my laptop is not allowing me to (However, I think that's just an issue with my Microsoft Store? I'm not completely sure on that). My requirements for my laptop are just that it's a PC, able to dual boot with Ubuntu, great for Computer Science (I have no interest in gaming with it if that affects your recommendation), and it is thin in appearance because I prefer a light laptop. Any advice/recommendation is helpful. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Having difficulty installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:30 PM PDT Hello /r/linux4noobs! I'm currently trying to install Ubuntu alongside my Windows 10 installation. It turns out that preparing Windows 10 to dual boot Ubuntu is actually harder than installing Ubuntu itself. I tried to install Ubuntu, however the GRUB bootloader wouldn't show. My machine is NOT a UEFI machine, instead it is BIOS. All of my drives are in the MBR format, instead of GPT. So I thought I would try to convert my disks from MBR to GPT, and then use the UEFI type for my machine. I decided to do this with the Windows 10 `mbr2gpt` program. However, I keep getting "disk validation errors". I think this is because my System and Boot partition are on different drives (for reasons that I don't know how that happened or how to fix it). These are my current partitions. My PC boots from a hard drive, instead of an SSD (even though Windows 10 is installed on my SSD). I would like for Windows 10 to boot from my SSD, have all my disks in GPT format, my system to boot in UEFI mode, and then install Ubuntu on my SSD. I'm really not sure where to continue from here. I know you can install Ubuntu with the MBR format, but it's considered to be outdated and GPT/UEFI formats are recommended. I feel stuck right now, any advice given will be appreciated greatly! Had this error while trying to install CUDA 10.0 after removing CUDA 9.1 Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:27 AM PDT It's happened with multiple seperate downloads of the file so I don't think this can be due to corrupt files. But if there is a way to check the checksum, please let me know. [link] [comments] |
I need to undo a pretty stupid mistake Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:46 AM PDT I was trying to create a folder in /use/lib/ so I ran "sudo chmod -R 777 /use/lib" but in doing so I did something to my wifi driver, so now it says no Wi-Fi adapter is found. How do I undo this command? [link] [comments] |
Doubt: What's the better choice? Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:07 PM PDT I'm going to buy a new box. I don't need a very PC or some like that, but i was noticed of this boxes that can proxy the whole network. I made a big search and after different evaluation i'm in doubt: what's the better between this: AnonaBox: https://www.anonabox.com/ PrivacyBox: http://ecnetworld.com/site/box.html Thank you for any tips or suggestions [link] [comments] |
Customise a Linux install to include our own bash scripts? Posted: 01 Apr 2019 02:06 AM PDT So I reinstall many machines with Fedora and I am looking to find out if there is a way of installing fedora and then running some custom scripts during the fedora install process somehow? I ask because we use Ansible at the moment which means requiring human input to set up users and ssh. But if I could stick the USB stick in, hit install and walk away and expect a fully set up machine post playbook...that would be amazing. [link] [comments] |
External Drive - OS and Storage. Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:23 PM PDT Hello. I was looking if there was a question like mine (Probably its out there) but wasnt able to find it. Here is my issue/request. Is it possible to have Linux Distro AND Storage space in the same External hard drive? (Better if that storage space is readable for Windows) Here is the background of the deal. In my class i know couple guys that run arround with a 2,5'' USB Hardrive with their Linux sistem on it. Looks cool since they have their files and stuff in a portable hardrive , they unplug the external drive in work and if required they plug it at home and work from there. (I know USB hard drive arent the best option to work with but to be fair the read/speed of the drive seems more than enough to me to do the work i'll usually do on it) I'm looking to get one of those for myself. So here is the deal "ideally" i would like to get a 2 (or 4) TB 2.5 USB 3.0 Hard drive (I've seen few WD options already) Partition it 50-50. In one half of the drive have a Linux Operative system and in the other half having it as raw storage space , accessible from the "other" end of the Hard drive (Linux) and if plugged into Windows machine that it just sees the storage part? Is it possible? There is a known (working and more or less noob-friendly) guide to get that working? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

MPD randomly mutes on PulseAudio Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT Hi, I've been using MPD with MPC and NCMPCPP for a long time on my Arch Linux machine and everything was fine. Couple of days ago though, me and my friend (both on Arch with the same music playing setup) started having problems with MPD being muted on default and randomly muting for no reason or when launching other programs using PulseAudio or closing them. I've been searching for an answer online with no success so I decided to ask here. Do you have an idea what may cause this and how to fix it? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:05 PM PDT I've found a few posts online, but I guess menus have changed and I have to enable certain services that seem to be off. VNC has always felt a bit slow to me, so I'm trying to use RDP, without having to install anything else on my Windows machine. Using yum, I was able to confirm vino is already installed, but seems the service is not running or not accepting connections. Help please? [link] [comments] |
Scripts on demand - more info in thread. Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:47 AM PDT /u/sudo_throw_ 's post gave us idea to build community around this idea of helping people with their scripting needs. If you'd like to get help, you can register on forum and open a topic with your request or register on self hosted GitLab server to make scripts for people. If there is any open source project that you need a script for auto deploy or anything that could ease your life, then visit shell5 and post the request. If you are not sure how to write your script, maybe unsure about best method or general idea how to achieve something.. Feel free to ask a question. You might want to check about page to see on what this community is hosted on :) . If there will be any requests, they will be automatically mirrored from selfhosted GitLab to GitHub to provide backup and better overview for people which do not want to register anywhere. At the moment there are only 3 finished request, so any request is welcome. [link] [comments] |

iTunes UI not rendering properly (almost all black) even though OpenGL is being forced. Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:50 AM PDT Everything works just fine until I start the program, at which it starts pumping out DirectX errors in the console (natrually), and thus it can't render most of the UI. However, I've flagged it with which forces OpenGL for it, but it doesn't seem to work. Is there any other way to get an application to explicitly use OpenGL? [link] [comments] |
Can't install Ubuntu 18.04 through BIOS (Dell XPS 15 9560) Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:04 AM PDT I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 with no OS and I have Ubuntu 18.04 on a 4 GB USB Drive. Whenever I try to install it, it loads for a few moments on the title screen but then it freezes. Any ideas? Edit: Sorry meant to say USB Stick not SD Card! [link] [comments] |

Writing Python files on Ubuntu Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:28 PM PDT Hi, I've been learning Python for a few months and recently decided to start trying to learn Linux. I set up my PC to dual boot Ubuntu (18.04) and Windows 10. This is probably a stupid question but I was wondering for advice on the best way to write/test python programs on Ubuntu. Is it best to write the files in a text editor and then run them through the terminal or some other method? I'm sorry for the vague question but any help would be appreciated. Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:12 AM PDT Over eager noob here. I've been playing around with updating GRUB on my new install of Ubuntu 18.10. I was using GRUB Customizer to do most of the edits but it was failing to update my background image. I read some documentation about only editing the /etc/default/grub file. I'm currently getting the following error when I try to open GRUB customizer or run update-grub: I've looked around and can't find someone having a similar issue and being that I'm the new guy here, I'm not sure where to look to next besides asking for help. Any points in the right direction, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated for diagnosing these kinds of errors in the future. Here's my /default/grub file for reference: Let me know if you need me to add any additional information. (All of this and my background is still purple with a question mark boarder, that's an issue for later). [link] [comments] |
