    Windows 10 Installation question

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:08 PM PDT

Hello all, I just bought a new Lenovo X1 Extreme laptop, it comes with Windows 10 and Office, but I would like to completely wipe the laptop and install my copy of own Windows 10. Essentially I do not want to use the manufacturer's image. Would it be possible to do this? Is there a tutorial that someone can recommend? Thanks!

Night Light scheduling never works. Only way to trigger it "automatically" is by restarting Windows Explorer through Task Manager.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:23 PM PDT

Title explains the issue. Night Light schedule settings seem to check out, and it should turn on around 7:30 PM. This never happens. Eventually it gets dark and I realize my screen is extremely blue and bright, at which point I usually manually toggle it from the Notification Center, but I've recently learned that restarting Windows Explorer will actually cause Night Light to "catch up" and turn on afterwards.

Why is this happening, and is there any way I can fix this? Toggling the schedule on and off does nothing. I used to use f.lux but want to cut down on background services for CPU/RAM purposes and would prefer to use Night Light.

Where can I buy a *legal* product key for Windows 8.1?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:14 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

I've got an offline AV project running until the end of this year where it would really simplify my life to stay in Windows 8.1, and I've got one less product key than I've got machines.

I can't just have the "please authorize Windows" prompt keep coming up, so I'm fine buying another license, but I can't find anywhere to legitimately purchase a valid product key.

    Any advice appreciated!

Paste into File: I think tools like these should be a default feature in Windows. (not affiliated to dev)

I always long for pasting my clipboard content directly into explorer.

Is there a browser, or browser plugin, that adds "refresh" to the Back history?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:06 PM PDT

Sorry for titlegore. Here's my problem:

There's a lot of times when I will be on a page, be it reddit or facebook or what-have-you, and I will hit refresh. But moments before the refresh happens, I notice something else that I want to see, but the refresh knocks it off the page and now I can't find it again.

If this happens in a situation like when you click a link, you can hit the browser back button to go back to the previous page, and then click the other link you wanted to see. What I want is a way for the "refresh" action to add the previous page state to the Back history, so that when you hit refresh, you'll get the latest version of a page, but if you hit Back after that, you'll get the version of the page that you had before your refresh.

Hope that made any sense. Is there anything like this? I tried some searches but I am not really sure what to search for.

Windows 10 won't install if an ext4 partition exists on the hard drive.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:24 PM PDT

Im trying to install LibreELEC and windows 10 and then dual boot the two. But I installed LibreELEC, then I try to install windows on a separate new partition but it still gives me the error "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation." I restarted several times, tried formatting the windows partition, but only after I delete the ext4 partition that LibreELEC made, Windows installs just fine.

Thank you for reading this, please help.

[Help] iPhone all of a sudden not appearing in Explorer

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:49 PM PDT

For some unknown reason my iPhone is no longer appearing as a device in Explorer. It had worked fine for years, now it doesn't show up. I've tried several methods to resolve this issue, but nothing seems to work.

I'm pretty sure all my drivers are up to date, Windows is up to date, and I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. Not sure what else to try. Has anyone else had this problem or have some suggestions for solutions?

Advice on moving from MacOS to Windows

    Posted: 29 Apr 2019 09:44 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm after a bit of advice. I've been using a combination of iMac and MacBooks for the past 9 years. I currently use a MacBook for portability (going to classes and for when I visit BF/Family and for when I have to go to meetings) and it's only two years old so I'm going to continue using it for a while, but my iMac is on its last legs, has been for a while, and I'm not in a good enough financial situation to justify spending nearly $2000 on a replacement.

I used to use a Windows laptop when I was in high school, and interact with Windows computers on a semi-regular basis through work and uni computer labs. I have a basic understanding but at the moment I prefer the user interface on the MacOS. I have a Google Pixel, so I mostly use Google Drive for backing up my photos, and I have an external hard drive as well, so not worried about losing any of my documents. Has anybody ever switched back (or to) a Windows computer after being comfortable and happy with the MacOS? My specific questions are:

    1) Will I hate the Windows OS with the fire of a thousand suns or will the expense saved sate my murderous desires?

    2) What is the latest Windows OS like?

    3) If anybody has switched, what was your experience like? What are the pros/cons/etc?

    4) What are some good models to look at? I'm fine with a pre-fab and don't need anything flashy in terms of gaming specs since I'm mostly a console gamer and my steam account sees action maybe once a year. I am also a student and not in a great financial situation, so best value for money ideal.

    5) Does anybody know if I can use my Apple Bluetooth keyboard/mouse on a Windows computer? I spent nearly $250 on them at the end of last year and don't really want them to go to waste/want to save money on those if I can.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Setting folder path in open menu

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:49 PM PDT

    Hello,

Is it possible to paste a file path in this style of open menu?

Clicking the folder path bar at the top opens a drop-down menu with no apparent ability to set a file path (e.g. C:\Users\etc)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:09 PM PDT

windows button + R is something that's been really convenient for me but sometimes when I try to run certain applications it seems unable to find the file. It works for excel and that's about it. If I type "Word" or "Powerpoint" or anything else I get the message "Windows cannot find 'example'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I'd love to use this tool more on my computer what am I doing wrong??

    W10-SSD to SSD copy/overwritting slower than W7

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:10 AM PDT

Back then on W7, whenever i wanted to copy my 75GB (180k files, 90% images) from my OS SSD to my Backup SSD, once i pasted the folder there (With the same folder), it detected the files in around 5 seconds before asking me for the 2 typical overwritting (all) prompts, letting me do other things without worrying about the process

Now on W10...When i do the same process, it has to detect aaaaaaall or mooost of the files first , with a nearly 5-10? minutes procedure, before the Overwrite all prompt appears (Just once!)..Theeeen overwritting the stuff.. It's like it's comparing both folders first before overwritting (I tried to delete a folder for an app and after all this time it said "Oops, this folder's missing!"

I want to know if there's any official or side way to make the process as fast like in W7...

[Win10] Is it possible to remove the blink when taking a screenshot ?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:55 AM PDT

When taking a screenshot via Windows+PrntScreen, the screen flickers to black slightly. I don't need such a feedback, is there any way to disable it ? I haven't found how... maybe only accessible via regedit, but I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

No Cortana means I cannot search for files and applications anymore

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:02 AM PDT

I was browsing my Task Manager and noticed that "Cortana" was taking 70MB of RAM. I decided to kill the task (because I will not and never used it) but it got relaunched as soon as I did it.

I was looking for solution on the web and some tutorial said that you basically just had to rename the folder in which Cortana was located but you will lose the ability to search for files and applications on your computer.

And indeed, he was right. Now when I press the Windows key and type "Notepad" it doesn't do anything. By disabling a vocal assistant, I lost the ability to search conveniently on my computer.

This is unacceptable and very mediocre, but I guess one can't expect too much of Microsoft.

if my laptop screen is at 50% brightness while charging and the power goes off, the screen brightness goes up to 100% even if the settings are set for better battery life for discharging mode. what even is the use of this? it's works against battery saving.

    Give parts specific performance percentages?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:13 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

As another follow-up to my "my PC won't create a user" post, turns out my $250 SSD is screwed physically. A side effect of this is crashing shortly after startup when the SSD is given a particularly big load. As a result, I figured it might help for me to gradually ramp up the load on it. Is there any program / Windows utility to help do this?
