Is distro-hopping an addiction? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:01 AM PDT I've been shifting different Linux distros on my laptop (dual booting). I can't stop myself from trying out new distros. Is it okay to dual boot and try out new distros? [link] [comments] |
I build a PyQt python tool and would like to package it as a Flatpak or Snap Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:53 PM PDT Sorry if this is not the right place to ask this but it seems related. I build a tool called Yin-Yang which currently uses a custom script to install on Linux Desktops. I would like to package this up as a flatpak or snap so users can use this easily for their Distribution. I would like to package this as a FlatPak or Snap since some stores start to support those formats and I feel like this would be the easiest way for updating my application. Since I am a total noob and never packaged anything up I came up with those Questions:
I linked the source code above, if anyone knows what it takes to build this up I would be really happy if you could get me started. Thanks in Advance [link] [comments] |
3.5mm Microphone is too quiet or has too much static Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:21 PM PDT 3.5mm Microphone is too quiet or has too much static I have three different 3.5mm microphones and they're all too quiet. If I increase the gain and boost then they record a ton of static. I have tried changing the gain and boost in alsamixer and pavucontrol. I have isolated the cables from being near any other electronics as best I could. I tried putting this into my Pulseaudio default.pa file (it helped a little, but not great. Also it crashes Steam when plugging in a Dualshock 4 controller)
Does anyone have any tips to get better quality audio from 3.5mm microphones? [link] [comments] |

Installing Different Types Of Linux Packages/Software Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:00 PM PDT I am new to Linux and I have Linux Mint installed and I am learning the basics of linux and how to use it. I want to know if these software/package methods include the ability to receive updates or not. I know how to install deb/rpm, Flatpak, snap, use AppImages but I cannot understand tarball packages (tar.gz/tar.bz). I have found that there are the following types of packages that are offered... .deb/.rpm These are quite simple and act simular to .exe installers on windows (Not .exe applications). Flatpak To my understanding in Mint 19 in the Software Manager supports every Flatpak that is on https://flathub.org. Easy to use when it comes to installing Snap I had to enter these 2 simple commands in the terminal to be able to use snap packages. After that installing snap packages just takes one simple command in the terminal. AppImage Appimages are unique as they contain everything they need within the file. These are essentially portable apps and are handy when you want to put them on a thumb drive and be able to use the app on any linux device. Tarball (.tar.gz, .tar.bz) I do not understand how to install these. I have some software I want to install such as Firefox Developers Edition, Syncthing just to name a few. I tried using Alien which is a linux application that ca convert tarballs into deb or rpm packages but I am unsure how stable this will be and weather if the converted tar application will get updates. Any help and insight will be most appreciated! [link] [comments] |
"...(experience with Linux is great, desire to learn is a must)." PART DEUX! Posted: 31 Mar 2019 12:57 PM PDT Hello all! Thanks again to everyone who posted on my last post. I've made a big leap in learning when it comes to linux. I have an Ubuntu 18.10 vm set up and I'm trying to get lubuntu running via lightdm. However, no command I try seems to get it to fire up. What am I doing wrong here? [link] [comments] |
Distro with fractional display scaling? Specifically 1.5x or 150% Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:28 AM PDT My display is 2560x1440 and it would really save me some time if someone pointed me to some distributions that has a UI scaling mode option for 1.5 or 150%. The ones I've tried so far all only have the option to double the scaling which is too big. Can someone help me out? [link] [comments] |
Linux Mint - file system of a working NTFS partition on a working HDD is unknown Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:39 AM PDT I'm dual booting Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon and Windows 10, and barely know anything about Linux, though I'm pretty tech savvy in general and pretty good in the Windows side of things I'm trying to mount all of my drives on startup, and so far succeeded with two of them. However, I can't seem to mount the third partition, which I know to be working thanks to Windows. If I run blkid, it doesn't list the drive. (strangely enough, I ran it again just now and it listed the partition as well as a PARTUUID, but nothing else. This didn't happen before) So I did some investigating around the internet, and came across GParted. this is what I get. Obviously, sdb1 is the partition in question, and this is its information tab. I'm running Linux on sdb2 and Windows on a partition in sda. The HDD is a 1TB Western Digital (WD10EZEX) and I have a Ryzen 5 2600, a 1060 6GB and 8GB RAM, if that changes anything. The other 2 drives I did manage to mount are also NTFSs. EDIT: This is how the properties tab looks like on Windows. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:10 AM PDT Basically, I'm just wondering the basics. What distro is best for someone used to Windows? What is essential software. I'll list software I currently use and some of my habits to give you guys information to work with. Software I use a lot:
I use my computer mainly to browse the web and watch YouTube, but I also do a lot of tormenting. I use Google Drive as my main office suite, so I don't need to try to run Word or even something like LibreOffice. I also like to mess around with VMs. I'm relatively techy and good at following tutorials, so if there's a complicated process that will make something work, I can probably follow it. I've used Mint some, and don't have any problems with it, but if you have any other suggestions, I'll be glad to hear it. I'm really use to and like the interface of Windows (Win7 and before primarily), and rather dislike the UI of Macs, so keep that in mind. The current Ubuntu UI looks like hot garbage from what I know. I prefer to keep it more traditional. This is kinda embarrassing but in my opinion the best looking operating system ever was Windows Vista. It ran like garbage, but I really like the graphic design choices they took. I do prefer the longer rectangle start button like in XP, though. Sorry for my random rambling. I'm a bit overly concerned with aesthetics, I guess because to me only that and software compatibility matter, and software compatibility seems to be pretty similar for all major linux distributions. I'm aware I'll gave to utilize customization to get the look I want, I just need something that is properly customizable. I've been using Classic Shell with Windows 10 for years, and before that I used Window Blinds on Windows 7. Like I said, I'm overly concerned with aesthetics. Edit: I should note that "lightweight" isn't even close to a priority. This won't be going on some little netbook. This laptop, if everything goes as planned, will have 24gb of ram an i7, and a dedicated 6gb video card. [link] [comments] |

Does timeshift encrypt backups? Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:58 PM PDT I'm new to using timeshift and I have a fully encrypted disk that I am backing up to an unencrypted partiton on a storage drive. Are the back ups on that drive encrypted? [link] [comments] |
I've just Installed Linux Mint on my olderLaptop, and I've a question I hope you can answer Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:42 AM PDT As much as I like Win 10, the last couple of releases have not been kind to my old, reliable, but, minimal, Toshiba LT (Satellite L750D) with 4GB RAM, an older AMD CPU, and 320GB HD. It was sluggish and very unresponsive. Everything ran, but it was just too underpowered to be useful but in the direst emergency. So I loaded Linux Mint 19.1 stable version on it and I couldn't be happier with the results. It's fast, reliable, and very usable now. I used the "Cinnamon" user interface. While not a look alike, it does sort of parallel the Windows 7 user interface, so the user experience is intuitive to the Windows user. I've even loaded the Chrome OS WaveMaker standalone writing app on it. However, I would really like to install Wine in order to install ACDSee standard. I don't need a full featured photo app when I travel, just basic photo management. (I know I could use a native Linux app, but I know ACDSee VERY well) I also want to run either/both Scrivener and Atomic Scribbler (my two favorite writing apps). My question is WHICH version of Wine should I use? There are several versions available. on the application manager (like the app store, but free). PLUS there are TWO other apps called PlayOnLinux and PhoenicisPlayOnLinux, which appear to have enhanced versions of Wine in them. Apparently they are aimed at gamers. I'm reasonably confident that Scrivener will work at least eventually. I have a lot of anecdotal evidence from other writers that they've gotten Scrivener to work. However, the only reference to Atomic Scribbler and Wine said it won't work because it uses a lot of .net technology. Is there any version of Wine that could overcome this problem? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I will cross post this question to a couple of writing subs [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:02 AM PDT I had 2x8tb drives in raid 1 so only 8tb of usable space. I got 2 additional 8tb drives to add to it so then I would have 4x8tb with 16tb of usable space. My original 2 drives on /dev/md0 are:
The 2 new drives are:
So I ran the following commands:
then
Then I unmounted /dev/md0, checked the filesystem and ran:
but it says it's already the maximum size. I check the size and, sure enough, /dev/md0 is still 8tb. What am I missing here? [link] [comments] |
Help: Manjaro noob problems/questions. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:31 AM PDT Hi, I have been using Mac OS on my MBP for 6+ years now. I am absolutely not tech savvy on computers and I want to learn something about it, and I want to switch to ThinkPad with Linux system. After watching several YouTube videos on different Linux systems, I decided to go with Manjaro. To familiarize myself with the system, I burned a USB-stick and boot into the Manjaro in my Mac. I noticed immediately some problems:
—— I am guessing it's because it boosts from the USB, and the system does not respond well? To solve the problems, should I install manjaro my Mac and try dual boot? On a side note:
EDIT: I was using an old version USB 2 stick. [link] [comments] |

Power saving/hibernation for my linux pc Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:34 AM PDT I'm using i3 and I would like to know how to achieve a similar behavior to windows where the pc goes into hibernation after a certain amount of inactivity. My monitor already does this by default but I'd like to save even more power for environmental reasons. Should I just turn the computer off when not in use? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:36 PM PDT I've been curious about this today after writing my first few scripts using rsync on unraid to backup to a network drive. I figured out why a script I put in cron.daily folder wasn't running. As a newbie to writing scripts, I hadn't made it executable. But it's not immediately apparent what the commands to make the .sh file executable does. As a side note, what does the "755" mean in "chmod 755"? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:37 AM PDT I've been working through errors with trying to build the OBS-NDI plugins (https://github.com/Palakis/obs-ndi) from source and I've come across one that I don't know how to fix. I don't know what I'm looking for in the output log but I don't see anything in there that stands out to me. I'm running Solus 4 and OBS Studio 23.0.2 (64 bit). [link] [comments] |

Any advice would be great [link] [comments] |
SSH uses different ports for each time I connect Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:56 AM PDT I'm running the server version of Ubuntu and I'm trying to use putty to connect to the openssh server on the server. It only works when I disable the firewall so I figured it was a port issue. I then installed tshark to capture the packets coming from the PC attempting to connect to the server. The output looks something like this: The port 53170 isn't the same for each attempt so I can't allow it in ufw. Is there a way to lock the port that it uses? I tried setting the port to 22 in the config but that doesn't seem to work. I also encountered another problem when trying out this. I have a webserver and for that I have port 80 and 3306 open. These show up in an nmap scan (simply "nmap localhost"), but whenever I add new ports or even completely disable the firewall they don't show up. Why is that? I can tell that other ports are enabled because I can use them. Also, I'm using nmap because I couldn't find a way to list what ports are open through ufw, is that possible to do? [link] [comments] |

Installing Lubuntu on a 2006 iMac without much luck. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:16 AM PDT I've tried everything. Booting the installer from a flash drive Booting the installer from a dvd I even directly flashed the installer to the hard drive using Target Disk Mode. The installer OS will always boot, but the installer program on it never detects the internal hard drive. However, using the command prompt shows that the drive is being detected, it just won't show up in the installer program. The only way I can modify the internal hard drive is by flashing it from another Mac over FireWire with Target Disk Mode. I also had the idea to run the installer on another Mac, and just select the iMac drive as the install location, but the USB ports on my other Mac don't work properly, and I'm not willing to partition the internal drive just to fix the iMac. My final idea was to find an ISO with Lubuntu preinstalled that I could flash over FireWire. However, I can't find any of these anywhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (or where I can find an ISO with a clean install of 32bit Lubuntu preinstalled) [link] [comments] |
