    Simple Questions - February 27, 2019

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    8600K vs 9600K vs 8700K vs 9700K vs 9900K?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:33 AM PST

Im looking to upgrade my old 4670k as its been struggling in games. What CPU do people think i should go with for my workload? I want something that will last me a long time and that i wont have to upgrade for atleast 4 or 5 years.

Should i save money and go with a i5? or go all out and spend money on the i9?

Here are the prices in the UK as of now

    8600k (£260), 9600k (£260), 8700k (£390), 9700K (£390), 9900K (£480)

Should i spend nearly double the i5 to get an i7? and then at that point is it worth spending an extra £90 to get the i9 over the i7? and 8th gen vs 9th gen?

Ill be using the system mainly for gaming at 1080p (high refresh rate if i can), and some content creation in Adobe software (Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere).

It'll be paired up with a gtx 1060 6gb for now, and then later down the road ill probably upgrade that too (maybe when new nvidia cards are out)

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

My first build is complete! Thank you all so much!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:47 AM PST

After years of wanting to build my own PC then getting overwhelmed and chickening out of it, I finally built it! I couldn't have done it without this sub, /r/buildapcsales and /r/buildapcforme and all the great advice. My budget max was $600 and I came in just a dollar short of that (before tax...) so I'm stoked. I didn't update the prices on the parts list, but with sales and a $70 gift card from Amazon I came in at $599.47 or so.

    Parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yKX4WD

Here she is! Sorry for the bad image, I was excited to get it up and running and forgot to take a picture. The cable management is... poor. I'm definitely going to try and fix it up later but I was a little anxious trying to route everything. Next time I upgrade, I'd like a case that has a PSU shroud to help things look a bit cleaner. I only ran into 2 problems during the build. The first was the CPU cooler, screwing it down was surprisingly difficult and I had to adjust it a couple times. The second was the RAM, one stick wasn't seated well enough and that prevented the system from posting. Otherwise, it was pretty easy!

Thanks again to everyone for your help, I love this community.

My First Build in 7 Years

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:04 PM PST

I can't believe I waited that long...Just in time too, because my graphics card died as I was buying the parts. Hardware has gotten really nice looking, and all the RGB!

I themed it after Mercy from Overwatch. I had gotten the graphics card first and decided to go with the white theme, Finding that RAM really sealed the deal for the theme, too. I did all the vinyl graphics on it myself as well as the custom graphics card back plate.

What are your favourite pc building Youtubers?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:44 AM PST

Hey! I'm planning on building my first PC in about 6 months and i was wondering what you guys think are good Youtubers to learn from.

I've seen some drama around the Verge, and i don't want to learn it from the wrong people.

    Thanks!

    RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 for 1080p

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:04 AM PST

    Hi!

I am looking into parts for my new PC and decided to go for the RTX 2060 or 2070 (MSI armour one especially). The RTX 2060 is 370 Euro's in my country and the RTX 2070 armor is 540 Euro's, while the MSI RTX 2070 gaming z is 650 Euro's. Which one is the most worth it to help my PC perform at 1080 144fps. I have a G-sync 144hz monitor and will buy the i5-9600k CPU with the GPU. Thanks for the help!

My First Build - Thank You!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:19 AM PST

Thank you so much r/buildapc and r/buildapcsales and r/hardwareswap for helping me actually upgrade to a working strong system at an affordable price.

When I was around 16, I was tired of gaming on a laptop, and after earning some money at a summer job went computer hunting. I didn't know anything about building computers, or even parts to be honest, So I ended up going with flash and overpaying for a terrible computer that when bought in 2016, contained parts from 2012! (CyberPower GUA3400A - for any interested on how terrible - SIDE NOTE the ram that they sell with this is incompatible so I was only able to use 4 out of the 8 gigs. Upgrading from 4 gigs to 16gigs btw is insane).

Since then, I've learned through the help of you guys here at r/buildapc for what to look for and how to build a better computer. It has a lot of rgb I know xD but I got great deals and I have to embrace the inner gaymer in me so sue me. +20% fps per rgb.

So here she is: https://imgur.com/0j0B1Sn - Harry Potter managed to transfigure my trash into beauty.

    part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QBXG4q

Special thanks to r/hardwareswap and r/buildapcsales for helping me to keep costs down. After purchasing from there, and reselling most of my old parts there. I will have spent a grand total on around $600 exact for this! For me that saving of 280$ or so dollars is insane and I wish I could've found that sub earlier for some other parts (I could've saved like another 50-60$ on my gpu and 30$ on my psu)

Will the Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8GB SE interfere with anything on the MSI B450m Pro-VDH motherbard?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:05 PM PST

I'm going to use the stock cooler that came with the Ryzen 2600x. I haven't started to physically built it quite yet, but am afraid everything might be quite snug or the GPU or cooler may block some things.

I'm thinking I might take it back and switch it for an ATX board. Of the board below, which one is best for a non-overclocker stock hardware mid-range non-FPS gamer person like me?

    $90 - ASRock B450 Pro4

    $98 - Gigabyte B450 AORUS Elite

    $100 - AsRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming K4

    $100 - MSI B450-A Pro

    $109 - Asus Prime B450-Plus

I'm picking up my PC tower today, monitor and keyboard tomorrow, the other parts come in on Monday/Weekend

    Faster!!!

My University is going to get a large influx of packages, lol.

Need Some Help on a Massive Professional Build

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:14 PM PST

At my work, I have been tasked with coming up with a computer than can run a fairly extensive data gathering and processing center. I don't really have all the details yet on the specifics, but it basically has to track and log various data and gps points for 150 vehicles using around 6 different programs with checkpoints, weight, etc., and then compile all that information and stick it up on a big map in real time.

I was asked to give a ballpark estimate for how much would cost, so I'm running some scenarios in PCPartPicker and here's what I have so far:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2JbB3b

It has to run 24/7, so I gave it a giant UPC.

What do you guys think? Is this overkill or not enough? I'm a PC gamer builder, so this scale and functionality is a bit out of my wheel house.

    First build - AMD2600X RTX2060 H500i - need last check

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:22 PM PST

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming a couple hours per day, coding (Unity, VB), graphics (Inkscape)

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Good performances, but I don't need ultra settings... just want something that will last 2-3 years. I like single player games (RPG like FF, survival horror like RE and any indie survial crafting); I want to be able to play ARK, Anthem and Monster Hunter.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    1700€-ish

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Italy

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

PCPartPicker can't find the headset I've seen on amazon.it: SteelSeries Arctis 5 86€

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    1. What I want to understand is if there's anything that could have been picked better, like disks and RAM. Also the I have no experience in picking even mice/keyboards.
    2. About fans, do I leave them (2) as they arrive with the case? Do I need more fans?
    3. Is it worth to spend more and get an RTX2070? I might be able to rise a bit the budget.
    4. Ideally I wanted to make a black + soft light blue light setup... or orange for a change. The screen has sadly red details. Anyway hoping to do something one-soft-color: I belive motherboard, CPU fan and RGB strips are the only lights in this setup. Opened to style suggestions.

I want to upgrade my pc. Pls help meee!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:05 PM PST

I have a gtx 1060 3gb, but now I switched to a 2k screen (144 hz with g-sync) and I just want some more power from my GPU.

The question is now which new GPU I should buy. My budget is up to 450-500€.

I was thinking about a GTX 1070ti or a rx Vega 64. Which one is the better one or are there any better GPU anyways then these two for my price range.

    Thanks

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

So after building the PC, we tried powering it up to no avail. After trying several suggested troubleshooting steps, testing the power supply, and a couple of other things no change happened. I had a friend who knew a bit more about PCs come check it out and he was able to get it powered up with just the power supply, motherboard, and case. Once we added the processor it would not power anymore so we figured it was the processor. After getting a new processor I tried again both before adding the processor and after putting it in and it would not power in either way. I'm assuming all this means it is a motherboard issue but I wanted to see if anyone could think of anything else.

Was wondering if I could get some advice on a build I've planned.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:29 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/checkforloot/saved/#view=t9rTBm

So, it's been a while since I've built a PC, and I was wondering if I could get some build advice on this list I've created.

My goal for this PC was to create a Mini ITX for around $400 that is portable and able to perform tasks such as recording on a USB mixing board with XLR microphone(s), running Adobe Audition, and occasionally playing LoL with friends.

Like I've said, it's been a while since I've worked on a PC or a parts list for one. Any advice on how to potentially lower the budget or to get a better quality build around my price range is greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to transfer only Windows from an HDD to an SSD? I just got a new SSD from an old laptop that wasn't using it. It's 128gb and my HDD is 1tb. I'm using 800gb of that 1tb and I don't want to uninstall anything from it. Can I migrate only Windows from the HDD?

Any issues with running an amd and nvidia gpu together for separate monitors?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:11 PM PST

My second monitor is only 144hz through dvi which my new nvidia gpu does not have but my old amd one does.

If I plug in both gpus, and let them use one monitor each is that fine?
