Obtain Ethernet port in my room via WiFi

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:09 AM PST

Hi, I have a router with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz WiFi antennas. In my romm there is a PS4 with only 2.4 GHz WiFi support, so I was looking for a device which takes my internet connection (5 GHz WiFi) and transform the signal into a Ethernet port. I'm not interested in a WiFi expander, because in my room the connection work very well, but I need a cable connection to the internet. I can't set up powerlines, so it must be via WiFi.

ISP tells me line pair looks fine, but I think otherwise.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:10 PM PST

So my ISP Windstream says that my line rates and error CRC and FEC all look ok, but they told me they changed the way the lines are provisioned so a higher SNR for the lines is no longer required, Ever since they changed the way they provision the lines the SNR went down from an average of 13-14 db to just 4 db. Keep in mind this is bonded pair copper DSL.

We never had these issues wit our internet before they changed things, Now my in game ping is literally all over the place, it bounces back from 35ms to 90ms at random. I'm on an ethernet connection and the only one using the internet. When performing a ping test via CMD I continuously get a "timed out" error when trying to ping google. It returns random ping times as well ranging from 56ms to 98ms for no reason at all. I have records of it performing the same ping test months prior to the changes and never had timed out errors or a ping above 60ms in the entire time it pinged google.

    Picture of Line 1: https://i.imgur.com/2r26EHh.png

    Picture of line 2: https://i.imgur.com/neEpzlU.png

There is a ton of far end RS FEC on line 1, So I'm guessing the pins needs changed at the DSLAM?

    What the hell is Cat6e?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:51 PM PST

I'm trying to set up Ethernet wiring in a new house we are having built. The only builder approved and insured contractor says that they can't do a Cat6A install and that the best they can do is Cat6e.

I've never heard of Cat6e. I requested Cat6A because I've got a 10gbps router and switches for my internal network even though the internet service is 1gbps symmetrical fiber.

    Anyone have any insight?

Wifi in Detached Pole Building Question

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:07 PM PST

I have a 1300 sq ft pole building (metal panel siding and roof) about 20' off of our house. I wanted to run a hard-wire between the two but I'd need around 200' of cable for that. Instead of that would a Powerline unit work for me? The service (400 amp) comes in from the street to the Pole Building first, from there 200 amps goes to a disconnect, then back to the house panel. I assumed I'd need to put a router in the Pole Building as my Wife has an office out there and I'd like to have wifi in the rest of the shop.

Looking for advice on extending WiFi range, considering Mesh WiFi for use with century link

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:00 PM PST

I have the less than stellar 20 mbps century link modem router that I am forced to used because it provides tv. I have WiFi connection issues at ether end of my single story 2600 sq ft home. I have been looking for solutions to extend the range with a mesh system.

Modem broadcasts 2.4 and 5.0 WiFi

I have multiple devices hard wired into router- Apple TV- pentair pool controller- tv- NAS

I was recommended to install an EERO.

Any help or recommendations would go a long way

Any way to buy Technicolor cgm4141 not from Cox?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 06:37 PM PST

I was given this modem/router from Cox cause the previous one apparently had something wrong with it. I tried searching for it and couldn't find it on Amazon or Best Buy or any other sites that showed up.

I'm not fond of passing $10/month for it. Cox is selling it for $200. I was just seeing if anyone knows where it might be cheaper.

    AT&T Fixed wireless issues

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:30 PM PST

I am a recent customer of AT&T Fixed wireless and this is supposedly the best internet I could get where I recently moved to. I've come to find out that the NAT type is strict and this really interferes with my gaming on the Xbox one, Switch, and PS4. I've tried to get it to at least a moderate NAT type but it is not letting me. I read that using something like Tunnelbear could help but I didn't want to pay for that unless it actually works. Can anyone help me out with this situation?

Port forwarding with a dynamic IP

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:39 PM PST

I wanted to manually forward a few ports so I read guides on port forwarding. All of them said I'd need a static IP. My ISP only assigns dynamic IPs to private residential customers. I skipped the steps to give myself a static IP and forwarded the ports I wanted and it worked despite my IP being dynamic. Does it mean static as in my computer's IP doesn't change every time I turn it on? I'm always assigned the same IP unless I unplug the router and plug it back in. If my IP changes will I have to forward the ports again? Also is port forwarding a security risk?

Network trouble on the far reaches of my home network; need help

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:15 AM PST

Hey all, not sure this is the right place for it but as a networking noob I thought why not.

Basic problem is my desktop PC traffic can't reach my router. Where it gets a bit complicated (for me anyway, hoping someone smart here will know what I'm doing wrong) is what's going on in between. It looks like this:

My PC --(ethernet)-- My server ---- powerline adapter // different room // ---- switch ---- pfsense router ---- internet

My server (running ubuntu server) is able to access the internet and can ping everything on the network. I set up a bridged interface but try as I might the PC traffic won't get through it. Here's the /etc/netplan yaml:

    network: version: 2 renderer: networkd ethernets: enp4s0: dhcp4: no enp2s0f1: dhcp4: no bridges: br0: dhcp4: no addresses: [server_ip/24] gateway4: powerline_ip nameservers: search: [my_FQDN_url] addresses: [router_ip,other_dns] interfaces: - enp4s0 - enp2s0f1

Other info, will add as needed:

    • can ping the server from my PC, but can't ping one step further than that (the powerline adapter), which is why I think it's a problem with my server bridge
    • I have also tried a bunch of the routes options as described here, but I haven't stumbled on the right config yet. Commented out the gateway4 line whilst doing that, didn't make a difference.

Hope that someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Do I need special antennas for a 3x3:2 MIMO?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:01 PM PST

I bought a DNMA-83 Mini PCI module with Atheros chipset such that my OpenWRT router can have better driver support for the Wi-Fi interface (as I experienced intermittent connectivity with my current setup from time to time).

    Datasheet of the DNMA-83: https://docplayer.net/7160066-802-11n-a-b-g-wifi-3x3-mini-pci-module-mb82-ar9160-ar9106-model-dnma-83.html

I noticed that the old card I want to replace has 2x2:2 MIMO, so it has 4 small internal PCB antennas attached via UFL connectors as can be seen in the third link below, whereas the DNMA-83 only has 3 UFL connectors and 3x3:2 MIMO.

    https://oldwiki.archive.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/dgnd3700#wifi

    https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Foxconn_95.0343T01

    Photos of the antennas: https://apps.fcc.gov/eas/GetApplicationAttachment.html?id=1431948

I'd be interested in attaching some antennas with directional gain by modding some SMA connectors into the case, but I am uncertain whether the MIMO feature has some requirements for the antennas. The DNMA-83 datasheet does not state anything about it. If that is not an option, then I'm wondering whether the three of the four antennas in my DGND 3800B happen to be in the right configuration (but I guess, two of them are 2.4 GHz, and the other two 5 GHz?).

    Ethernet/Coax location

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 06:50 AM PST

We are in the process of building a new house, and I'm trying to determine where to place the ethernet/coax within each room. Now that most TV's are hung on the wall, are people still placing the ports near the floor and running ugly conduit up to the TV, or up on the wall where the TV would be hung? I'm under the assumption I can place them wherever I'd like, but I'd like to hear what others have done. If there isn't a TV hung immediately, how big of an eyesore will the ports/faceplates be up on the wall?

On campus student: Single room router products?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 04:04 PM PST

I'm a college student living on campus where the wifi is slow and drops all the time. I've talked to my IT department and it is ok for me to have my own router (although they do not recommend it).

I have access to an ethernet port, but it is equally as bad as the wifi. All I want to be able to do is be in my room on my laptop without any buffering or playing ps4 without my connection dropping.

Are there any products that I can buy or recommendations that you guys have that will help me out in my situation?

    Thanks.

    Need to upgrade

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:56 PM PST

So I have xfinity internet and I just upgraded my speed to performance pro which is 150 Mbps. I think my modem is holding me back so I'm going to upgrade to the Arris sb6183.

My question is, will my router also hold me back? It says it's capable of 300 Mbps but I don't know exactly what that means. I have the TP Link TL-WR841N. I'm on a budget so if it isn't sufficient, a suggestion for a new one that is about $60 would be great unless there is one that will give me a significantly better performance for not too much over my budget. I really only play online games on my Xbox and my wife watches Hulu/Netflix and app surfs on her phone. Please let me know if you need any more details.

    Thank you!

Starting Xfinity in April, looking for new modem/router or gateway device

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:00 PM PST

Hi, I have been using Verizon Fios but I am moving to my first house (have been renting) and the area only has xfinity so I will be switching over. I have only been using the verizon gateway device (https://www.verizon.com/home/accessories/fios-quantum-gateway/) which i bought my own (will just sell to whoever is renting next)

So in need of a new modem and router or gateway device. Our new house is 2600 sqft (2 story so about 1300 each floor) with brick on the front side and vinyl on the sides, wooden framed. Just my wife and I so not many devices, Roku TV for streaming, laptop for games (WoW mostly online, some shooters), 1 laptop for internet and email only, and a switch. Planning on getting 150mb service.

    Thanks for any recommendations!

    Laptop as Router

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:38 PM PST

Intel 9560 AC does not connect to 802.11ac 5GHz networks

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:20 AM PST

I bought an Asus SCAR recently and it has an Intel 9560 AC wireless networking card. The card does not seem to be able to connect to 5GHz connections very well. i have setup the network adapter to only connect to the N network with 2.4 Ghz for it to connect to the internet.

I have tried doing the netsh winsock resets and everything else within command prompt. I even bought another wifi card thinking that might have been the issue with the same results.

What seems to work oddly enough is creating a hotspot with my phone and connecting to that. I feel like I have narrowed the issue down to how my computer handles channels in 5GHz. Seems to me that it has an issue connecting to 36. I am not able to change the channel on my wifi router, since it is a Google Router and they don;t have channel changing by users. But the flaw there is that it briefly does connect, gives me ridiculously slow speeds, and then pops a "connection interrupted" message. I found another thread from a while back in a lenovo forum with the same issue, but no fix. Link

Please let me know if you guys have come across this issue, or know how to fix it.

EDIT: I am running the latest drivers for everything.

Want to move my desktop upstairs and don't want it to run on wifi.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:05 PM PST

So I have a coax cable connection upstairs and downstairs installed from my ISP. My desktop is downstairs and has a direct ethernet connection to it for internet. I also have several devices directly hooked up downstairs from my router. We use wifi for devices upstairs.

I want to move my desktop upstairs and leave the router downstairs as we have various devices we regularly use hooked up via ethernet cable.

Is there anything I can do other than buying a USB wifi stick to get a better connection up there? Remember I do have a coax hookup from my ISP due to when we first moved into the house I had my desktop upstairs.

    Thanks.

    Do I need Docsis 3.1?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:02 PM PST

Hey everyone. I may sound stupid so please bear with me.

I recently just upgraded my internet speeds with Xfinity from 250mbps to 400mbps because it was only a $4 difference.I have an Arris SB6141 which is advertised to handle up to 343mbps but I was told by the Xfinity rep that it wouldn't reach close to those speeds, so I know I have to upgrade my modem. He told me I have to switch over to Docsis 3.1 though, and looking up modems that support that I have noticed that they are too expensive. Do I need Docsis 3.1 and what is the cheapest modem that you guys would recommend that can handle the 400 mpbs.

    Thanks!

    Edit:

Thank you to everyone for your help. I have since done more research myself and I found that the best option for me right now is the Netgear CM600.

    Hi guys,

I need a few recommendations for the best WiFi routers under $50. You can also recommend any high-end router you're using. It would be great if you own the router or have used it, so I can decide best which to buy.

Let me know the pros and cons.

Need help picking a better home router.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 09:44 AM PST

Hello, I recently had the internet guy come out and check a bunch of stuff. Basically he said my router sucks. He showed me some online but they were in the $300-500 range. I don't need anything crazy, but I pay for 100mb and usually can only get around 15mb. Would a new router really help, and what's the cheapest I can get away with? I think I spent about 40 for the current one. Thanks for any suggestions!

One hop traceroute on home Wi-Fi

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:18 AM PST

When I connect my phone to my home Wi-Fi and run a traceroute to any website using the Fing app, I only get 1 hop; my router directly to the destination. If I turn the Wi-Fi off on my phone and re-run traceroute using my 4G connection, I get normal results. Any idea what would cause this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Help me pick components.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:20 PM PST

Please help me decide on the hardware choices.

I'm upgrading our home network. Focusing on wifi performance from a single, central point at this time. Extensive remodeling later on so I'll be running cat6 at that point.

I'm concerned with speed, reliability and to allow 4 xbox playing together to be at least a bearable experience. (Eventually they will all be wired. Lol)

I'd like to tackle the 24 lines and managed/Unmanaged choices but haven't done enough research.

Provider: mediacom, 1 gig business class

Need: a coax modem Switch Wifi router

    Considering:

NETGEAR Gigabit Cable Modem (32x8) DOCSIS 3.1 (CM1000-1AZNAS)

    D-Link 8 Port Gigabit Unmanaged Switch (DGS-108)

    TP-Link AC5400

    In wall rated Cat6 options

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 11:34 AM PST

What should I be looking for in cable for wiring my house for Ethernet? Amazon has a thousand foot spool from Cable Matters for 150$ that is solid copper and wall rated. But there are cheaper boxes between the 60-100 range. Why would I opt for the more expensive ones?

Also, what is the device called used to make sure a cable works once you wire it up? And can I use that to figure out which port on the switch goes to which wall socket?
