Issues with Ethernet Switch and Streaming (HDHomeRun) Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:13 PM PST I'm looking for any insight as to why my network & HDHR Connect (HDHR4-2US) are behaving strangely. I've worked around the issue by not: 1) Connecting the HDHR Connect directly to the switch 2) Connecting more than one client directly to the switch Not a networking expert, but I've not had any conflicts with this switch over the past couple years apart from HDHomeRun. Wiring my HDHR Connect or more than one client into the switch results in consistent buffering and timeouts. Avoiding more than one client on the switch gives me perfect streams with no hiccups. My setup is Fiber > ONT > RT-AC68U > TEG-S5g > Amazon Ethernet Adapter > FireTV3 Pendant. Any advice on how to diagnose or understand whats happening here would be greatly appreciated. https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=70973&p=340121#p340121 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:29 AM PST I have spectrum internet 400 down/20 up. Wireless speeds are great, coverage in my home is good enough. I'm a big gamer and the games I play I'm getting anywhere from 55-60 ping. I bought the netgear xr500 and havent noticed much difference at all. I have a about 12 devices connected but, at most, 3 or 4 are getting heavy use at any given time. I'm thinking of just staying with my isp router since it performed very well to this high price router compared to the price. Am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:51 PM PST Hi, Just curious - is multicast really only used for an IPTV service? I'm a cord cutter and stream my video only (Amazon, Netflix, NHL/MLB/other sports services). Would multicast (igmp proxy for my Edgerouter) improve streaming? I am on a fibre 150/150 connection so bandwidth isn't an issue - just looking to fully maximize my streaming services (reason i'm asking is because NHL sometimes buffers down for a few seconds and it just... irks me considering my connection and the Apple TV 4k). Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:29 AM PST Looking to run a cat6 cable to my detached garage and unfortunately trenching is not an option. I will be running the cable against a retaining wall on the surface on my side yard. The area is overgrown and I don't expect anyone to go down there however I'm not willing to bet all my electronics if someone does trip and pull the cable. Does anyone have a recommendation for a break away type system I could use? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Mesh Network connection issues - SOLVED, sharing results Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:55 AM PST I'm not in need of help at this point, but this is more a post to possibly help someone else in a similar situation... my home network begins with xfinity/comcast internet, 150Mbps down / 6Mbps up, > SB6190 modem > pfSense rounter > unmanaged switch > TP-Link Deco M5 v1 mesh wifi... I have (4) M5 pucks, only 1 is wired, I have plans to backhaul them all, but right now they are not... I have a couple of computers that are wired, the rest is all wifi in the house... I have about 50-60 devices in home (normal) with up to 100 devices on occasion... this post is about my mesh wifi... 1200sqft home on 5500sqft property... normal speed tests wired are 175+Mbps / normal speed tests wireless are 130+Mbps inside home / 70+Mbps outside home on nearly all of my property... so last week I decided to upgrade my bedroom TV... ordered a Vizio D40f-G9, got it, hung it on the wall, began setup and it wouldn't connect to my network... this made the 2nd device that wouldn't connect to my mesh wifi... the 1st device with connection issues was the wifi controller for my rinnai tankless water heater... I just figured that a cheap wifi chip was used for the unit... anyway, I setup an old router for the water heater, put it on 2Ghz only and lowest power setting... but the TV was NOT going to get setup that way... I was determined to find the issue... so, I began turning things off and on in my setup to see what the cause was... in the Deco M5s, in AP mode, there isn't much for options... but their are some... the culprit turned out to be an option called "Fast Roaming"... the help says this is so the M5 pucks (as I call them) can hand off device connections for one to another when a device is roaming through the wifi... it constantly asks devices for signal strengths and when it finds a better signal, transfers that device to the appropriate puck on the network... so, I turned that off and
so far, I've not seen any negatives to turning this protocol off... no issues roaming through the house or the property... and the pluses are listed above... I just want to share this, as other people may have similar issues... since "Fast Roaming" is an IEEE 802.11r protocol, this is not limited to TP-Link... other mesh wifi brands could have this issue... Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:07 AM PST I have a large household of 5 adult users and 2 children users. Currently running a Netgear nighthawk r6400 that I picked up based on a wirecutter review a few years ago. We have Comcast Xfinity 150 and recently moved and when I tested after hooking up I was getting upwards of 175 on Wi-Fi (iPhone right next to router) We are pretty happy with the Wi-Fi performance, however we need some specific features and are looking to upgrade/replace. We need to be able to set content filtering on a per-device basis, as well as schedule times for internet access to turn on and off on a per-device basis. This is for one of the "adults" in the house as well as the kids Also I have a few smaller routers to use as WAP's but haven't hooked them up as of yet (new house has better coverage with the nighthawk) Any advice is appreciated. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:27 PM PST I don't know much about this stuff but I was told I should get a better router than the one my ISP gave me. The edgerouter X, but after a little research I found it had no DSL ports on it, as I'm using a RJ11 phone line connection. I want to completely get rid of my current modem, but have been told I need to 'bridge' it? Can someone explain what this means, if it will still use the routing in my current modem, and if there are any workarounds without issues? I am buying a new router as I'd like to get rid off bufferbloat etc., and will only be getting a max of 17mbps down and 1mbps up. Thanks for your time [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:14 PM PST Here is my professional artwork on how I have set up the network. So far everything has been running smoothly for a few years. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated. Context:
Questions Would it be a good idea to upgrade equipment to something like Ubiquiti? Should I wire the network differently? Some mobile devices are getting 50/50 or less but my device is getting close to 100/100 fine so would the problem be the other devices are too outdated? Does the NVR's wifi interfere too much with the router's signals? Is it worth getting a switch for 2nd fl to wire a few pcs? Will switching more devices over to 5ghz slow down speeds for devices currently on 5ghz? We literally drilled a hole into the floor to run the wires through, anyone know a cheap alternative to run the wires so it does not look as ghetto? Thank you for reaching the end :) [link] [comments] |

Having a random issue with my switches Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:19 PM PST Hello, I have recently started having this weird issue with my network, and I am at wits end trying to solve it. Let me break it down: I have a USG connected to a 24port HP Procurve switch in my basement. The procurve is connected to a patch panel that connects to ethernet ports in each room. In one room, I have a switch connected to the ethernet port which has all my game consoles and smart tv hooked up. I have a second switch connected to the first switch that lets me connect my gaming PC/iMac/Printer to the network. I have been having this issue where if I connect my pc using that second switch, I don't get any internet connection. I have tried three different switches, 4 different cables connecting the switches together. I genuinely do not know what the issue is anymore. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I need help with cable and WiFi network.! Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:13 PM PST So we currently have 2 smart TVs, and 2 regular TVs and I'm buying another smart tv to make it 5 in total. We currently don't have a very good WiFi setup (I know nothing about this stuff yet) and am looking for help. We want to cut out all cable and we want to be able to watch Netflix on Atleast 3 of the smart TVs at once and get sports for my dad. I could really use some help on this I'm kinda clueless. In summary we want to cut cable and get better WiFi cause it costs a lot for cable. Any setup ideas or ways to get better WiFi are VERY much appreciated (We have 4 family members, and my sister usually watches Netflix on her phone or laptop) Thanks! I'll answer any questions! Any difference between 802.11 and 802.3 frames? why are they different? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:26 PM PST I was reading a book about WLANs and i seen that it had a section about the diffences but didint understand it. I didint pick up the book but is that true? why would they be different ,because of access modes? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:14 AM PST I'm building a new house and the builder is allowing me to step in before sheetrock and insulation go up and run my own low voltage. I'm trying to brainstorm and plan my cat6 wiring. House is about 3800 sq ft, open floor plan with most of it downstairs. In my office upstairs, I've got a ~5'x5' closet that's going to house a network rack for Ethernet, whole house audio, coax, etc. I just bought a Unifi 8 port PoE swtich that will be for my cameras, around 6 total in the new house. I may exchange it for the 16 port for future growth and to possibly run Unifi AP's. My initial plan was to use my Edgerouter X-SFP PoE ports for the AP's, but this limits me to passive 24V. Planning on 2-3 AP's, already have 2 UAC-AP-Lites in the current house. The second switch will most likely be a Unifi 48 port non-PoE switch. I could probably squeeze everything onto a 24, but I like how a 48 port patches in to two 24 port patch panels (OCD...) What are some locations ideas to run cabling besides the normal family room TV area, bedroom wall, etc. I'm looking for any ideas while running cable is cheap and easy. [link] [comments] |
MOCA Trouble - No Link Being Made Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:19 PM PST I am having trouble getting MOCA set up in my house. I am totally new to this so it is probable I am just doing something wrong. Right now I have the following setup: isp coax line -> moca filter -> moca splitter -> two lines (see below) 1) One coax line goes upstairs to my modem which has moca built in (Arris TG2472) 2) The other coax line goes downstairs to a moca adapter (MM1000) via the network line The issue I am seeing is that the moca adapter does not seem to be linking. The link light remains off and my router is not listing any moca nodes on the network. Any advice or things to check? EDIT -- AHEM... solved... I had it wiring to another coax port I had downstairs and did not know about so I just had to switch it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:15 PM PST Yesterday evening I was using my computer when suddenly all of my devices were booted off my network. I couldn't reconnect then the network disappeared from available networks. When I looked at available networks I saw mine and one other network came up that I didn't recognize, I didn't connect to either, before they both disappeared. It seemed to possibly be a car's wifi going by the SSID so maybe it was just a fancy modern car passing by but who knows the timing was weird. I think it was a wi-fi direct device of some kind based on the syntax of the SSID. I saw that my router was down because of the flashing light on it so I unplugged my router and after giving it some time I plugged it back in and I was seemingly back to normal and the mystery network was gone. Weird coincidence and my router just being finnicky or something more? I acknowledge that I am very paranoid about everything and understand little. Is there a way to check if someone was fucking with my network? I've never randomly had every device kicked off my network and have it go down before. [link] [comments] |
[Help] - Struggling to set up connection to new ISP modem-router Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:12 PM PST Hi, At work, we have a Mikrotik network of 3 devices. One hEX device that is the main device with 3 hAP lites as APs. We've just switched ISPs. The old ISP allowed us to their device in a modem only mode. So the main Mikrotik device acts as a PPPoE Client, where it connects to the ISP via the modem. The new ISP won't allow us to use their modem-router in a modem only mode. I want to reconfigure the Mikrotik to use the new ISP's modem-router to access the internet. I've been struggling with this for the past couple of days and i just can't get it work. I feel like i'm either misunderstooding something and i'm missing a nugget of knowledge. The new ISP modem-router has several LAN ports. I've connected this to ethernet port 1 on the Mikrotik. Looking on ISP modem-router i can see the
It has a DHCP server. Which i've turned off. And a UPNP IGD which i've left on because i believe it does NAT. I've set a static internal IP address of the modem-router as 192.168.0.250 Our existing DHCP server is on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Found at 192.168.0.200. The DNS server is also on the Windows server. On the DHCP server, i've set the DNS to 192.168.0.200, and then Google's and then 1.1.1.1's. The main Mikrotik device already has a static IP address of 192.168.0.1, and so i've set the gateway to 192.168.0.1 and then 192.168.0.250. I'd like the DHCP and DNS servers to remain on the Windows server. I'm just an electrical engineer (but there isn't anyone more knowledgable in the company about these sorts of things), and so i don't know all of the proper terms and i feel like i'm misunderstooding some things. I've tried to follow this guide https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Initial_Configuration#Configure_access_to_internet up to the DNS set up. Where i should be able to ping an external IP address from the Mikrotik device or a connected computer/laptop The IP address of the LAN is between 192.168.0.200 and 192.168.0.254. I believe all i need to do is set up an entry in the address list, a gateway route, and masquerade it in the NAT? In the address list, is the address supposed to be the IP of the Mikrotik device or of the ISP modem-router? Should the network IP be 192.168.0.0? And i believe the interface will be the port i've connected the ISP modem-router. I believe this should be ethernet1/internet? In the NAT, the action is masquerade, where the chain is srcnat, and the out interface is the port i've connected the ISP modem-router? And in the route, is the destination just 0.0.0.0, where the gateway is the port i've connected the ISP modem-router? The most sucessful i've got is where the Mikrotik device has told me that there is 'no route to host' when pinging an external IP address from the Mikrotik device. I really don't know what i've done wrong and i feel like i've tried many different ways. So any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Good Cheap Antenna for 4G LTE Modem Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:21 PM PST I want the best antenna I could get for ~25 dollars or less to get better signal. The modem I'm using is Netgear LB1120 if that matters. Also only planning on getting ~14 Mbps speeds so not much if that matter I don't really know much about tech. The company was supposed to send me a link for suggested antennas but they never did and I decided reddit might be better anyways [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:32 PM PST Hi, I am paying for 1Gbps up/down fibre network and I am getting horrible wifi speeds (150Mbps down / 400Mbps up), however, I get good speeds when connecting directly to the router (~850Mbps up/down). Here is what I tried with no avail:
Some notes: - I live in an apartment with concrete walls, however, I am always checking speed in the same room as my router (4-6 feet away) - I tried every possible 2.5Ghz and many 5Ghz channels, all provided the same weak speed. - I can confirm that the issue is not with my laptop WiFi or drivers. Please let me know if other information is required. Any help is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Backing Up Home PCs to Network Drive with Veeam Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:26 AM PST I would like to have a drive on my network that I backup all my home pcs to with Veeam. I want to write a script to Telnet into my router and change the wireless channel Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:43 PM PST Basically, my Chromecast Audio constantly disconnects and then will become undiscoverable until I changed the wireless channel. Researching the issue, the only solution I have found is to purchase a new router. The problem, according to many, is the MDNS buffer filling up and isnt fixable. It's just a crappy Charter Internet router. I really can't afford a new expensive router, so I was hoping to write a simple script to telnet in and change the channel, and just run it when i need to. I normally just change it from the browser. Using putty, I can't seem to reach the IP address. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks - [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:44 AM PST Hey guys, i just moved into a new apartment and unfortunately the Ethernet ports don't work. I'm a huge amateur when it comes to this stuff. I've spent some time researching this and just wanted to make sure I have everything right. I located the box that has the Ethernet wires in that looks like this: From what I've read I just need to buy a switch and attach some CAT5 (?) connectors to the end of each of the blue cables and plug that into a switch along with plugging the router in to the switch too? Is this accurate and does anybody have good recommendations on a switch (5 port/8 port)? Thanks in advance! Sorry for my lack of knowledge of technical terms. [link] [comments] |
Question about number of moca adapters needed Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:48 AM PST The Xfinity modem in the home has a moca icon on the back. Does this mean it acts as its own moca adapter, and I only need to buy one for my device output, or does that icon mean moca is simply possible and I'll still need to buy two adapters? Just got Wow, can’t use old modem. Looking for recommendations for 200mbs service Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:26 AM PST So I last had Spectrum but moved to a new area, and since I updated the modem to ipv6, it can't be used on the Wow network. I read through their recommended list of modems but a lot of the list has been discontinued. Anyone have recommendations for a good modem? I'd looked into the SB6190 but heard that intel and arris were having issues with it. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
