This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

A little background info about the build and what my previous PC was. I ran a i5-3450 with a GTX 960 prior to this and it got me pretty well through most games for a while with getting 60FPS on low/medium mostly. I used to be ok with these settings but always had a dream of building a monster PC myself with very high-end specs so I would be able to run games on ultra with 144 FPS+ since I currently mostly play FPS games.

After finishing this new build this weekend I must say it does feel damn glorious. Not only does the PC in itself look great with all the RGB stuff, it runs like a goddamn beast. I couldn't have asked for anything better honestly and I'm very pleased with all the choices I have made for the parts.

I also want to thank /r/buildapc as a community for all the good reads and tips for building a PC, this has definitely helped me with choosing parts and tweaking stuff in my system!

Edit: Yes, I know I'm using a 1080p screen currently. My main game at this moment is Black Ops 4 (Blackout) and this game is quite demanding. Pushing a consistent 144fps+ would be hard on 1440p. I do however plan to get a 1440p in the future!

Is it worth upgrading from a 1050 ti to a 1070?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:06 PM PST

Current build just died; Been a while since I've built my own...

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:48 AM PST

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Content creation in Adobe suite, MS Office, Gaming, Streaming, other work applications

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm re-using a GTX 1060. It works for my needs.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1,000 (flexible)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA - I live near a Microcenter and plan to buy all necessary parts from there

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    • AMD Ryzen 7 2700 focused build. I DO NOT PLAN TO OVERCLOCK.
    • RAM - No clue what specific speed to buy. I've bought Corsair and Crucial in the past.
    • Motherboard - I want as many USB 3.1 ports as possible to future proof. Something like this one appeared to have what I wanted
    • Case - Want one with a USB 3.1 port on front if possible. I do not need any RGB or tempered glass but don't care if it's part of the case. Would prefer one optical disk drive slot for blu ray burner. EDIT: This case may be what I'm looking for. It appears to have a spot for an optical disk drive. I don't mind waiting for this one. EDIT 2: Microcenter sells this case in the store. No optical disk slot, but worst case scenario I can do without it.
    • SSD - Might as well get an M.2 drive. Most familiar with Samsung SSDs

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Current i7-2700 build from 2012 is now officially dead. Tl;dr - Tried everything and it's likely the cpu or mobo. I am re-using an Nvidia 1060 card, Corsair 750w PSU, sound card, monitors, keyboard, and mouse.

EDIT 1: Added link to possible case

Hey guys what would you suggest is the minimum CPU and GPU combo to enjoy CS:GO in 240fps (for a 240hz monitor) in both 720p and 1080p on medium settings, i currently play 720p on a gaming laptop but an insight on this would be useful, thanks :)

    Ryzen Build finally done :)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:58 AM PST

After the final parts arrived today is was finally able to complete my build. Overall I am pretty satisfied with the result, and the thing I'm most proud of with this build is the cable managament, since my previous build was actually just all of the wires jammed in the back compartiment, making the panel bulge out. This time I tried to improve that and I think it worked out really well. The point for this build was to have it powerful, but not too loud aswell. Some parts I took from my previous build, like videocard and storage.

Please tell me what you think about it and if there is anything I can improve, let me know!

    Pictures

    Imgur album.

    Airflow

I placed 3 intake Arctic F12 Silent fans in the front, removing the small cover to be able to place the bottom one. The fourth F12 Silent fan acts as an exhaust at the back of the cause. As CPU cooler I use the Arctic Freezer 33 Esports One, and I added a second fan to it, that came with the case itself.

    Overclock and thermals

I overclocked the Ryzen 5 2600 to 4.0 GHz and 1.3 Voltage. After about 20 minutes of stress testing, the temperature maxed out at 65 C (,which i think is ok?). This yielded me these geekbench results: Single-Core 4632 Multi-Core 22490. Could anybody tell me if this is up to par?

PC Build for 1080p60fps with $700 budget

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:17 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    PC Gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p @ 60fps on High settings. I mainly play Rocket League, don't play a lot of FPS shooters. I do like Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, and those types of games occasionally. I'm a patient gamer so I don't need the latest and best AAA games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around $700.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I was given the case as a present, so I already have that. I already have a 1080p monitor, mouse, mechanical keyboard, etc. I'm looking at the 2200G so I can use the onboard graphics while I save up for the 580 (probably at least another 3 months). From what I've read, the built-in cooler for the 2200G should be fine.

I currently have a laptop that can barely can get 30fps on Rocket League and can't run the other games I mentioned, so I would like to get started on this build ASAP which is why I'm going the 2200g route. I also may throw in another 8GB RAM, but that would likely be later this year.

I'm not an overclocker and have no interest in that aspect of a build.

I'm interested in any input on something I may have overlooked. I've built a PC before, but it's been a few years, so I just learned about M.2 and such. Thanks for any input.

PS - I may dualboot Windows 10/Linux Mint, if that makes any difference.

Upgrading i5-6500 CPU mainly used for flight simulation

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:52 PM PST

    Hello,

I am planning to upgrade the CPU of my current build and would love to get some feedback about my insights. I need a CPU with a very good single core performance. After doing some research I came to the conclusion, that there are (at least) two options:

    1. Buy the most powerful CPU, which my MB can handle: Intel i7-7700K
    2. Upgrade MB and CPU to Intel i5-9600K

    What do you guys recommend?

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I do a lot of flight simulation (X-Plane 11), which is unfortunately not very well optimized for multi-threading, and rather relies on a very good single core performance to achieve framerates above 25 on 1440p or UHD. Aside from games I use my computer for software developing, which involves another CPU intense task named compiling source code.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am using a 28'' UHD monitor and aiming for 60 FPS (not necessarily in UHD). As being said, my plan is to upgrade my CPU only. I am still happy with my R9 390.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around 400 €

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

Almost Ready to order, but need help choosing CPU

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:08 PM PST

Hi everyone, I am almost ready to start ordering parts but i am stuck deciding between CPU's. I will mostly be using this build for gaming but I want to be able to get +120 fps on most of the games that i play i.e Fortnite, Overwatch, Battlefield. I will also be using it as a work computer as my girlfriend is a lawyer. With my other parts selected do you think that i would be better off getting the i5 9600 or the i7 8700. Also, will I need 3 separate fans or would I be okay with 2

Is it safe to put other electronics in your PC case for visuals?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:41 AM PST

I'm working on a PC build and I'm at the point where I'm deciding my aesthetic. I've seen a lot of posts about putting action figures in your PC case for visuals, and I really want to put some kind of small pattern light projector in mine. I'm worried that having another small electronic in there might lead to some problems though.

I've looked around and haven't seen any posts about this. Can any seasoned builders out there say if this is safe to do or not?

Want to run an RTX 2060 with an XG2402 (freesync)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:49 AM PST

So after months I finally have my build completely picked out, and I just put two in two together that the RTX is obviously Nvidia and the viewsonic xg2402 supports free sync, not gsync.

Is there any way to still tap into the free sync capabilities of this monitor with this graphics card ? If not, is there a free sync supporting graphics card that can come close to the performance of the RTX 2060 for around the same price point ($350-370)? Any info is appreciated!

    New computer build

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:44 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I haven't built a system in about 10-12 years, and haven't done a lot of PC gaming but have been really wanting to get back into it. I was hoping you guys could take a look at the hardware I was looking at and any feedback would be appreciated. I'm trying to stay under about 3k, so I do have some flexibility. I am also considering swapping the GPU for the Radeon VII, since it's getting released next week and I've seen some reviews on them. Thanks!

After 4 years of owning a hand-me-down PC, I was finally able to build my own...

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:13 PM PST

And it's beautiful ;w; (especially compared to the old one.. >-<)

So this is actually my first build, and I'm surprised at how well it went! I mean it took nearly 12 hours from start to finish (2 just getting the RGB to work correctly! x.x) but overall it went very smoothly and I can't wait to put it to the test! ^

Picture of it up and running:
    http://imgur.com/gallery/KksmAPC

Specs: Fractal - Meshify C TG Mid-tower ATX
    Gigabyte - GA-AB350-Gaming 3
    AMD - Ryzen 5 1600
    GSkill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB
    Samsung - 860 EVO 500GB SSD
    Seagate - Barracuda 1TB HDD
    MSI - R9 390 8GB
    EVGA - 600B 600 W 80+ Bronze ATX
Coolermaster - Masterliquid ML120L RGB TUF Alliance Edition

It may not be perfect, or top of the line...but it's my very first, and I'm in love with it. ^ (P.S. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster here, and I just wanted to thank everyone for the awesome tips I picked up along the way! :D)

EDIT: As I mentioned, this is my first ever build and I am very much a noob at this, so if there's anything that I can improve upon, please let me know!

Looking for upgrade options on ram and gpu

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:45 PM PST

Yall helped me build my first PC some years back and im finally getting around to a long overdue upgrade. I dont know whats compatible with my build tho. Currently sitting at:

I5 4460 3.2 2x4g ripjaw ram Gt730 nvidia H81M rgs asus micro atx Evga bronze 600 power supply.

I know my stuff is really out of date but im a poor boy. I would like to find some options to most importantly upgrade my graphics card, and hopefully expand my ram. 60fps isnt nessecary but i would like to at least be able to play current games on low settings without having a seizure from the stuttering.

    Thanks for the help!

Which RTX 2060 is the best for temps/thermal/noise?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:39 PM PST

I'm about to get an RTX 2060 card, but I'm not sure which one to get.

In Canada, it's currently going for around $500.

I'm debating between the MSI Ventus OC (2 fan) or the gigabyte g1 oc (3 fan) which is only $15 more expensive. From reviews, I'm getting that gigabyte has quite a bad reputation, but in this video

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I-DXzX8CAUI

The MSI shows higher temps, and has a plastic backplate. While the gigabyte shows low fan noise, and low temps. I'm also considered about any coil whining, and any potential artifacting.

    Any suggestions?

    500 vs 1TB SSD

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:13 PM PST

    Hi,

i'm wondering whether i need a 500 or a 1TB SSD i'm running 1TB HDD and 3TB HDD already and also dual boot Win and Linux plus some programming and gaming.

    I can fill a 500 SSD easy and i can afford a 1TB one but i'm wondering 3 things:

    1. if i combine 500 SSD and 1 TB HDD wouldn't it be enough? i use the 3TB to backup from the others.
    2. if i get a 1TB SSD and i use 3TB to backup what will i do with the 1TB HDD?
    3. If there are some things better done on an HDD compared to an SSD?

Ok, so yesterday I posted a link to parts for my new PC. I got some suggestions what can I improve. So i did. Here is the link with improvements: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2VGxq4 Is it ok? Does it need some more improvements? Thanks. P.S. : Does the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 come with CPU fan included with thermal paste pre-applied?

Here is the build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x3yqMZ . I am building this for a cousin and he is expressing not buying used. He will be gaming at 720p at 60 FPS on light games. I have an ssd already. How is this build? I also plan to overclock the igpu because I believe you are able to.
