I'm being asked to improve accuracy every single time I turn on GPS, and it's driving me mad

This has been going on for months, and nothing I do stops these cursed prompts. I've tried agreeing, I've tried turning the additional stuff (that I don't actually want) on manually, I've done both and then reset my phone, I've even done a factory reset! But I still get interrupted every time I just want to boot up Maps.

Is this a known problem, or am I just under a minor gypsy curse?

Edit: Phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5

My phone is creating new ringtones on its own? (Samsung Galaxy S9)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:31 PM PST

Ok, so I use Facebook messenger to message all my friends and such since I live overseas in Japan.

My phone has some weird quirks to it, but this is almost downright creepy. I woke up this morning to a message tone that was totally new. I normally use the default ringtone for messenger so this seemed strange that it changed, but I thought the app had gotten an update and Facebook just replaced the old ringtone. I went to check the ringtone section and find that the name of the tone is a bunch of numbers . It's just a simple tri-beep tone in ascending pitch. When I open the ringtone menu to select one, this number does not appear and there is no similar ringtone.

This is the second time this has happened. The previous time it had changed to something that sounds similar to the cute beepy noises my switch makes.

My phone also has an issue where it doesn't ring when receiving texts randomly so if I'm not constantly checking my phone, I'll miss my texts which is beyond annoying.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Is it not possible to finish initial set up without wifi?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:57 PM PST

Android Setup has stalled because I do not have a wifi connection https://i.imgur.com/vxRj6R0.png https://i.imgur.com/ysuV7pm.png I can't click use mobile data because it is greyed out. I have allowed app downloads over any network https://i.imgur.com/3X5Zq09.png

I ran into this same issue when I first got the phone which came with Android 8, however I had access to wifi so I could finish the initial setup. Recently I upgraded to Android 9 and after doing so factory reset my phone(still Android 9) and have run into the same issue. I no longer have access to a wifi connection. The apps it's trying to install is stuff like google calculator and Google notes from memory. If I go to the play store and search for google calculator it shows that the app is "waiting for wifi". I can cancel it and restart it and it will proceed without issue however I have no idea what all the apps are that Android Setup wants to install.

I believe what I need to do is somehow restart the Android setup while retaining the preference to allow updates over any network but I don't know how. I have force stopped Google Play Store and restarted the phone but ran into the same issue and I can't find any other app that would be related to the Android Setup.

Update: If I restart the phone I can select use mobile data which gives me this dialog https://i.imgur.com/t0R6t4B.png if I select restore now I just get taken here https://i.imgur.com/DGSBh9c.png if I select Apps nothing happens and if I select ok I just get take to my home screen. Also I have set google play store to unrestricted data access https://i.imgur.com/LaEkDut.png

Game launcher apps removed from the home screen? (Android 8.0)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:32 PM PST

    Hello all,

I just updated my Samsung S7 to Android 8.0. After my phone rebooted from the update, I noticed that all of the games that were on my home screens had been abruptly removed and consolidated into Game Launcher. I would like to return these games back to my home screens so I don't have to open an extra menu just to get to them.

One thing I tried was long-pressing the apps in the game launcher and tapping "remove," thinking they would then appear in the apps tray or somewhere on the home screens. Neither happened, and as far as I can tell the apps I "removed" are now in limbo, where the only way I can get to the apps is by using the phone's search bar or by going into the play store and tapping open from from those listings. That's an annoying quirk, but I guess I should have seen it coming.

Another thing I tried was long-pressing on an app after looking for it through the phone's search bar and tapping "locate app," which appears to do nothing, just sending me back to the apps tray. None of the games are in the apps tray.

Finally I tried disabling game launcher altogether, which appears to just put all of the games into limbo, even after restarting my phone. That's not helpful.

So far it appears like the only successful thing to do is to just uninstall and reinstall all of the apps Game Launcher "stole"... a hassle, but something I can probably grind out. However, one such app I specifically am trying to avoid updating, and I'm pretty sure if I uninstall and reinstall it the latest version will load.

I just want to put the Game Launcher apps back on my home screens. Any ideas? Thanks!

Android still having major problems with selecting install paths and which storage (internal/external) to use.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:21 PM PST

Ok so a few years ago when I realized that installing on a SD Card was not a smooth operation I was fine with it as Android OS was still quite new and still working out things.

But fast forward more than 5 years later and this issue of not being able to utilize the external storage option or SD Card in most people's use cases is becoming extremely annoying.

I can download large files no problem on my SD Card but anything to do with app installation or even local data saving (looking at you Netflix and YouTube background downloading) becomes a problem and only the internal storage can be utilized not the SD Card.

With internal storage still stuck at 32/64/128 gb this can be a huge problem for power users or even people who want to save a few videos or movies from apps like YouTube or Netflix for later when data is not readily available for example on a commute via train etc.

So what gives? The option to select SD Card is there in my settings but it does pretty much nothing. It is not like PC where choosing where data goes is usually as easy as selecting another file path directory. Why is this so hard to do in Android?

I have been wracking my brains for the past few years trying to think of a reason why this simple feature is not available in some apps or natively in Android or is it just me with my Huawei Mediapad M3 BTV-W09 running EMUI 5.0.3 Android 7.0 with the problem.

Any way to create a system backup offline, without going through Google Drive?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:39 PM PST

I recently lost my phone, it went dark and stopped receiving pings from Google's Find My Device. I became extremely worried it might be compromised, and I only had a 4 digit pass-code on it. I assumed the worst and started deauthorizing accounts, blacklisting the IMEI# with Google Fi support, pausing my Fi service, changing passwords, the whole 9 yards. I also sent an erase device data request and selected the option to perform it as soon as the device came back online. With my privacy at stake, I wasn't taking any chances.

Turns out, the device wasn't stolen, and the person who found it had just turned it off, and later returned it to me. So it has been turned off ever since it stopped talking to Find My Device and was not erased. Google support informed me that there is no way to stop an erasure request once it has been given, so I was left to assume that as soon as I turned it back on it would connect and wipe itself. This turned out not to be the case, the OS booted up normally and once I realized nothing had happened yet I put it in airplane mode. A notification from Find My Device popped up, but I ignored it as there is no way I'm opening that with a possible deletion at stake. This seems to have frozen the process.

This brings me up to now, as my device is in limbo where as soon as I reconnect it to the internet, it will probably be erased. Google support was pretty unhelpful on this front, as they suggested backing up with Google Drive which I can't do for obvious reasons. The support representatives I talked to told me that they don't know of any way to do a system backup without an internet connection. I have access to the phone, and I can connect it and transfer files via USB, so I find it hard to believe that I don't have any options on that front. That said, I'm running out of ideas. Anyone know of a method I can use to make a backup?

Notifications and certain apps not showing on notification bar

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:01 PM PST

When I had my Nexus 6p this wouldn't be a issue. Data manager, weather network, pedometer would all have icons on the notification bar (i.e -5 degrees, Pedometer is running). Apps such as bleacher report would give me slide able notifications (ie LEBRON JAMES HUGE DUNK) to any sport I subscribe to. This doesn't happen anymore on my OP6. All settings are set properly

    Problem with sim card.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:37 PM PST

I dunno where else to ask about this, so I'm hoping someone with a similar experience can help me. I ordered a new contract only sim card from mobiles.co.uk for my new unlocked note 9. It took 5 days for the sim to arrive. I popped it into my phone for the first time on Friday evening and it picked up virgin media instantly. I tried to make a call with it but it said I had no credit. I phoned virgin up and they told me my sim has no contract and is pay as you go. Which is not the case as I'm paying 14 quid a month for it. So I phoned mobiles.co.uk at about 7.30pm and they told me it can take up to 24h for things to work properly from the first time I placed the sim into the phone and I should call 'em back Saturday at 6pm if I still can't use it. So fair enough... I waited.

It still doesn't work and acts like a pay as you go sim, so I tried calling mobiles.co.uk at 6pm Saturday evening and found out they were closed when the guy told me to call at that time :s obviously I'll call 'em again in the morning but I'm hoping someone here may have had an issue like this with a new contract sim before and know how to sort it out. I need it for work.

    Thanks for any help :)

Anyone know of any USB C cables where the actual connector part is physically longer?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:23 PM PST

The case I have on my phone doesn't sit flush around the charging port, so my USB C cord doesn't hold securely. When I take the case off, it's great, but I'd rather not have to take my phone out of the case every time I want to charge it and not worry about the cable falling out.

So does anyone know of any USB C cables where the actual connector that goes into the phone is a little longer? Searching for this online just brings me longer cords, not longer connectors.

Apps in 'recent' list keep closing...sort of

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:36 PM PST

Brand new Moto Z² Force Edition. After X amount of time, apps listed in my 'recent' list disappear. So to use them, I have to launch them from the drawer--but when I do, they're exactly as I left them. For example, Twitter. Say I leave it on a specific tweet; when I relaunch Twitter, it's still sitting there on that tweet; I do not go through the logging in process, as would be the case if the app had actually closed.

So it's like they're staying in recents, which is what I want, but they're not being shown in the list.

I've gotten used to--and like--having all my daily apps available by scrolling the recent list. How do I get that on the new phone?

A way (or app) to turn off one of my speakers?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:57 PM PST

Hey hey. I have a primetime k92 tablet and one of the front speakers blew out (still a mystery to me as I don't ever max the volume or close to it). I am wondering if there is a way to turn that speaker off or if there is an app that will let me control individual speakers levels.

    Checklist for diagnosing battery drain?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:29 PM PST

There's a considerable amount of fake news and bro science when it comes to battery life. (The whole don't use a task killer debate, for instance, and all the useless battery saver apps)

Is there a list somewhere of all the high value tips for finding all the low and medium hanging fruit in terms of battery drain? I'd like for it to be more or less comprehensive (minus extraneous things like undervolting via root or using a black background)

    Of particular interest :

    • Finding high drain apps or process and measuring their actual impact (native battery drain details aren't very good). Perhaps setting alerts for apps that drain quickly.

    • relative comparison of sensors and radios that drain on idle (e.g. Lte vs Bluetooth vs NFC vs accel vs wifi)

    • Battery health detector?

    • Resolution downscaling apps & pixel saver apps impact

    • The real impact of setting certain apps to "battery not optimized", & what sort of activities prevent deep sleep? I use android P rotation locker

    • if any telemetry settings (e.g. Location) should be tweaked to lower idle battery usage

-the effect of always on data or gmail/outlook push sync

    -widgets and custom launchers?

    • Bonus question - dealing with apps that seem to enjoy persistent notification (e.g. Accubattery)

Burner phone with carrier Sim card. I am switching from an old phone to a new one, and am wanted to keep my number. Am I able to switch my current number to a new SIM card?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:47 PM PST

I'll give you as much information as I can, if you need more, please ask. I currently have an old Galaxy S5 Active that has held up in its years but recently, after moving closer to our states big city, I've been have lots of issues with my service. My carrier is AT&T and I use its GoPhone service where I just use a SIM card and a prepaid unlocked phone. My service drops out no matter where I am or what I'm doing, but it comes back within the minute, like a flickering light bulb. I went to an AT&T store and the tech told me that the tray where my SIM card stays has worn down and is probably the issue (this phone gets HOT). He also told me it may be the actual SIM card itself.

My issue is that I would really like to keep the number I have, I've had it for years. Would I be able to keep my number that is associated with my current SIM card if I get a new, shiny SIM card? I've done some research but the response is wish washy, so I was curious to see if anyone else has done this or has experience. To clarify, I'm staying with AT&T, just replacing my SIM card. Thanks for your time! :)

Should Android messages have a way to sort contacts so you can see who has chat/RCS enabled.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:58 PM PST

It wouldn't affect who I contact. But it would be cool to see the list grow as more networks enable RCS.
