This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What is the importance of the motherboard?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:04 AM PST

I have built a few PCs now, but when choosing a motherboard I have generally gone for mid to low end. I just look for something that supports the components I want and that's it really. I have never really understood or seen the importance of getting a good motherboard. I have always thought the high end ones just include on board graphics which I dont need. Am I wrong about this, does the motherboard have a larger effect on a build than I think?

I was getting pretty unhappy with my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. I thought I would get used to the #donglelife, but it was always a pain connecting USB devices, or connecting to a display, or connecting to a network jack. The touch bar never grew on me, and it's a shame that Apple didn't really do much with it, instead the user has to take it into their own hands and customize it to suit their needs. And it's great for people who set that up, but I'd rather just have physical function keys. I really like macOS but I can't stand having a Steam library of amazing games that I can't play because I sold my old gaming PC back in 2017 (for lack of space at home).

I started missing the larger screen estate and having a mouse. Although, to Apple's credit, they make the finest trackpads in the business. But I still prefer the tracking and hand feel of a mouse.

After I moved recently, I got a lot more space... and the itch to build got me again. I started researching parts in my free time, and after weeks of deliberation, I settled on the above. I sold my MacBook Pro, and purchased all of my parts at Microcenter (barring the display), because I prefer to support local businesses (trying to avoid patronizing Amazon because of their shitty practices), and I was able to get all of my parts the same day and build in the evening. The display was bought on sale at BestBuy.

The weak point of my build is the storage, which I had from my previous build. It doesn't bother me too much... Windows is installed on the SSD and the HDD is storing my media. This will be the first thing I upgrade... but right now I unsubbed from /r/buildapcsales to keep my sanity!

I wanted to get a 1080 ti before they were all gone, and I got lucky that my local Microcenter had a few Zotac units in stock! After that, I knew I wanted the 2700X, and pairing it up with the X470 Taichi was an easy choice as I plan to OC in a few months time after I get a stronger cooling solution.

I wanted to price match the RAM, PSU, and case but Microcenter isn't price matching this weekend... at that point I decided to eat the $70 extra for the satisfaction of having everything ready to go.

If you're wondering, I have a friend who works at MS so I have a yearly $250 software "allowance" that lets me buy Windows, Office, and some games on the cheap.

Overall very happy! I can't complain. This beast should serve for years to come.

    Here's the goods.

Is it safe to buy a used graphics card that came from a prebuilt pc? (HP Omen)

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 08:30 AM PST

I've been looking to buy a 1070/1070ti recently and I've stumbled upon someone selling a card for a very good price from their prebuilt HP Omen. Is there anything I should know or anything about cards from prebuilts that I should know?

Building my first gaming PC. Recommendations?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:33 PM PST

    Hi guys!

Im building my first gaming PC! I bought some components in this Black Friday:

    • Asus GTX 1060 6GB
    • Gigabyte motherboard 370Z ATX
    • Ballistix RAM 8 GB 3000Mhz
    • SSD 500 GB Kingston

... and now i need a CPU cooler, CPU and case!

I have seen CPU I5-8600K but I appreciate some recommendations.

And the case, what would be nice? I have seen this: Cooler Master MasterBox MB600L but dont know how to know that is this box is good for the ventilation.

    Thank you guys.

    Regards.

Cat puked on top of my computer! Living dead video card

    Posted: 25 Nov 2018 08:14 PM PST

So my wife's cat decided to puke all over my computer, the puke went through the vents located on top (Corsair Carbide 540) and piled up on top of my video card (EVGA 1060 GTX 6gb) I'm fucking livid. We are going through a rough patch financially and my wife solely relies on my computer for work and needs multiple screens to do so. The DVI plug is still functioning but the HDMI is dead. I don't know how long it's gonna hold...

Is there a way to limit the damage? How can I clean this stuff without making it worse???

I'm sure EVGA doesn't cover cat puke (still under warranty) but with cyber Monday on the horizon is there a chance to except a similar model under $300 ?

I'm sorry if it's not the right place to post I'm just in a mad panic

Clarifications: I dont let the cat stay on my computer it happened at night. As for running my computer with cat puke I didn't notice a problem until the second monitor wasn't recognized. All the chunks got blocked by the grill.

    I'm team dog!

Update: good news everyone! I cleaned the puke residue on top of the card with isopropyl alcohol took me hours to remove, magnifying glass and all to check and it's working again!!!! Thank you for all your advice and the private messages offering to send some of your spare parts 🙏🏻 In order to protect my computer from another cat mishap I've built a platform that sits on top so the cat can't affect the parts anymore (yes I thought about turning that stupid cat into slippers but my wife would have not been super happy about it. She had that cat for 16 years...) I'm most likely put something on top of the platform so it won't hang there anymore

A CPU for my GTX 1080

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:32 PM PST

    Hey guys!

What CPU would be a good fit for a GTX 1080 8GB? I currently have an i5 2320 3 ghz and I got a feeling that it is bottlenecking my GTX 1080. Would a better CPU from the i5 series be enough or do I have to buy one from the i7, i9 series?

My Budget is $290 for the CPU+MOBO+Ram+Case.

I have already purchased the SSD and PSU.

Any thoughts on the build. He willl be doing light gaming and productivity/work stuff.

Lastly, I have adjusted CPU and MOBO prices are from Microcenter including Tax.

Edit: R9 280x is my old GPU... I believe it should still be good for 1080p right? Also, its been awhile since I kept up with the latest PC performance stuff, so I'm hoping to just hear some feedback. Thanks

Changed GPU, now pc will not detect new card

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:20 PM PST

    Hello, friends!

I've only built a couple pc's, but I'm coming across an issue that is completely baffling me. To begin, I have 2 friends involved. Friend D and Friend J. Friend D got a new pc, and only took his psu out of the old to put in the new. He asked me to assemble his new pc, which I did. No problem there. So now Friend D decides to give his old pc(without the psu and hdd) to Friend J. Friend J takes his hdd and psu from his computer, and puts it into Friend D's gifted pc. He has asked me to put together the pc and ensure working operation.

Now, the problem im facing is that the mobo is still recognizing the old gpu (750ti) and completely ignoring the new gpu (960). Now this computer is almost the same as it was when it was in working condition, the only changed pieces were the hard drive and psu. Seeing that the pc is powered on, I can't see it being the psu. I feel as if it's a driver issue, but I can't figure out what to do. I've tried Uninstall ING and reinstalling drivers, I've tried resetting the cmos battery, I've tried resetting bios to defaults, and I've tried Uninstalling every instance of a video driver to no avail.

Any and all help is welcome, please let me know if I can provide any extra information. Thanks

    Question about CPU/Motherboard compatibility

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:06 PM PST

I am looking to build a PC, and I have selected an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and an MSI B350 Gaming Plus. I am worried about not being able to boot since the chipsets do not match up. Is the Ryzen still compatible with B350, at least until I can boot and update the chipset in the MB?

First ever build.. got some trouble ):

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:04 PM PST

So i just did my first ever build, i used most of my old components but I got a new case, new water cooler and new fans. When I was done I turned on the PSU and turned the pc on. Everything turned on... but only for like 2 seconds. Everything turns off then 1 second later, it repeats itself..

Can someone please help a girl that just started getting into this?

I was kinda glad to see everything turn on (gpu, cooler, fans) so I'm sure I can somehow fix it but I really need help

I'm here to do my first ever build. My goal is to build something powerful enough to primarily handle music production and light gaming.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:52 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

The primary goal of this build is for music production. Something powerful enough to handle running my DAW (Cubase 9.5) and some virtual instruments. I also intend to do some light gaming. I usually just play some Diablo 3 with some decent settings.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm not expecting to play at ultra settings, but decent FPS at medium settings on Diablo 3 would be ideal.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    ~$1,500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Using current SSD in a new build

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 10:03 AM PST

I'm going to buy my pc parts shortly after New Year and have most of them set. The biggest question I have with my parts list is what GPU I'll get.

So, the RX590 just launched a week ago and there are five cards currently on the market. My Question is: Do you think that until New Year new RX590 models are going to be released?

Help with vertical mounting gpu Lian Li dynamic

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:28 PM PST

    Hi all

I recently brought a Lian Li dynamic case and I am having an extremely difficult time with my GPU in this case.

Firstly, when mounted normally, the GPU is too wide and actually pushes on the side glass. I have to forcefully shut the side and the cables/gpu are getting crushed by closing the class. I'm using an msi gtx 1070.

I want to eventually vertical mount my GPU. But it appears too big to even do that, as the fans on the bottom are too big and are blocking the space.

Is my GPU too big, and if so, are there any newer RTX cards (maybe a 2070) that are smaller in size than my 1070? (Not a blower style please)

I fear if I removed the bottom fans on this case it will inhibit a lot of air flow as I am running a 9900k and heat is my enemy here. Do I need a bigger case?

    Sorry for the noobish questions.
