Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:02 AM PST So I just had Gigabit Internet installed and on both my Windows 10 PCs I am not getting close to the speeds I should be getting. Speedtest shows around 300mbps A tech from my ISP came in and plugged in his laptop and got around 950mbps (using same cable that is connected to one of my PCs. His response was well you are getting the correct speeds to your house it must be your PCs. Both my PCs are running Windows 10 64bit Both have gigabit ethernet cards I disabled my Firewall but got the same speed on the speedtest I disbled my Antivirus and got the same speed on the speedtest I am stumped and really need to figure this out, I can finally get Gigabit Internet and have waited years to get it so I want to resolve this :( Any help would be amazing. **UPDATE** - OK booted into Ubuntu Live and got 930mbps.... Looks like its Windows that is the issue, but I have no idea what it is that is the issue? **UPDATE #2** A reinstall of Windows on one of my PCs has fixed the issue, just waiting on all the Windows updates to complete to test again. Spambot from my IP issue - I simply cannot resolve the problem. Can you help me? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:55 AM PST Dear redditors! Firstly, I'm not an expert in networking/internet stuff, but I'm not stupid regarding PC things and I simply cannot resolve this problem. It's extremely frustrating. So we have a rural ISP who is providing us a 18 Mbit connection via a huge antenna located in the nearby village. We have a main switch which divides the incoming signal via a LAN cable to 3 PCs. One PC has a WiFi router (TP-LINK TL-WR841N) connected to it, from which 2 devices are connected via a LAN cable - the PC itself and a PlayStation 4 console. To the WiFi are connected via wireless connection 7 devices: 3 mobile phones, 3 notebooks, 1 tablet. The main problem is that OUR IP IS BLACKLISTED since September and we cannot resolve it since then. These are the links showing that our IP is being used for spam e-mails and brute-force attacks: https://cleantalk.org/blacklists/85.248.58.163 https://www.abuseipdb.com/check/85.248.58.163 All the devices are clean. We have both Malwarebytes and Windows Defender on. We did several scans and followed the malware removal guide from this reddit: These applications found several tracing cookies and even a proxygate-thing, but all of those were removed and cleaned. Since then, all of the running devices are pure and have no threats or traces to them - but the problem STILL REMAINS. I thought that our WiFi router is infected, because the first report of the malicious activity was from 13th of May (regarding to the cleantalk.org website) and there was a huge Russian attack and the router itself (TP-LINK TL-WR841N) was on the list of possible targets. So I've been completely shut the router down recently (even I've plugged it out from the wall), but the spambot or whatever still does that thing since then. My question is easier than my whole story: WHAT CAN I DO TO SOLVE THIS? Should I reinstall all my devices and throw out the switch and the router? Should the ISP change my public IP? Should the ISP solve these all? Or is the ISP behind this issue? Sorry for my very long post, but I'm way beyond my tolerance (the Captchas and the high ping in several multiplayer games because of the blacklisting are killing me) regarding this issue and I feel exhausted from this situation so that's why I'm asking you to help! Thank you so much for all your suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:24 AM PST Hey Everyone, I have been reading around and wanted to get some input as I am new to this and would prefer to do it myself. I am looking to wire my pre-existing home in 3-4 rooms for Ethernet. Current set-up: Currently, my Fios ONT box is in my basement which is wired to my router on the floor above (main floor). What I want: I am looking to purchase a 16 port 1Gb switch which my router will connect too. I then want to purchase CAT6 cable and do drops to 3-4 rooms on the second floor. My questions: How do I determine the best "route" to take to wire from my router to my switch and then from my switch to each of the rooms? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:31 PM PST I currently have an ER-X and 1 AC-Lite. I bought another AC-Lite off of Offerup. Anything special I should do before or after plugging it in? I didn't take it out of the box when I bought it since the box looked brand new and it was purchased in an upscale area and now that I have it home, part of it is fairly yellowed. Any ideas to clean it without damaging anything? [link] [comments] |
Mac Firewall and Router Firewall Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:14 PM PST I have a iMac which I have enabled the Firewall in the iMac Privacy Settings. I also have a ASUS Router that also has a Firewall which is enabled. Do I need both? Would there be any advantage to turning off my iMac firewall and just relying on my ASUS Router firewall? Thank you for taking the time to read this. [link] [comments] |
Please explain to a noob what exactly was going on with this network fix Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:41 PM PST So I'm at a friend's house using his wireless network and become increasingly frustrated because a few websites would load very quickly (Google, YouTube), but pretty much everything else wouldn't. This is on Comcast using the standard Xfinity router. Important to note that my phone was not having any issues on the network, nor were any of my friend's other devices. I attempted to flush DNS, change the DNS server, restart everything and as a noob, just didn't know what steps to take next. Then I realize that the local IP given to my phone is on the 10.0.0.x gateway, while my computer which was having the problem was on 192.168.0.x. I manually changed my computer's IP to an unassigned spot on the 10.0.0.x gateway and all of my issues were fixed. My question is, why did this happen and how do I prevent it from happening? I'm interested in learning about networking. [link] [comments] |
Wi-Fi acting weird with my router Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:28 PM PST I hope i'm on the right subreddit now and i hope someone in here can help me out a little bit. I have had this problem with this router ever since i got it and i just can't wrap my head around it. First of, i have a Netgear CG3700EMR-1CMNDS that i got with my ISP, i have a pretty weird ISP where i don't get fiber connection, instead it's going through the cable tv. Don't ask, it works. (For any swedes here, you probably know about Comhem) Anyways, the problem i have is that the Wi-Fi is extremely weird and bad. I have tested with so many devices that it can't be a problem with the devices, it must be some weird stuff with the router itself. I can connect to the Wi-Fi with my devices without any problem, i search for my Wi-Fi, i connect with the password and the device just connects. The problem i have is that once it have been connected for a while, around 10-15 minutes, it's like the Wi-Fi connection just get's stuck or how i should explain it. A good example is if i'm writing to someone on let's say messenger, my messages goes away, but the dot next to the message never shows it get's sent properly, if i just leave it as it is it takes around maybe 5-10 minutes before it just works again and then it works normally for a little while again until it happens again. If this issue happens, like i'm sending a message, if i just disconnect from the Wi-Fi and then back on again it works again. At first i thought it was my phone that was the problem, but i have tried out 4 different phones, 3 androids, 1 iphone. Running stuff wired works as it should, no problems at all. I have tested with both the Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n) and Wireless Network (5GHz a/n) and it's the same issue with both frequencies and i have been running through a lot of channels aswell but i just can't see a change. The Router itself is not near anything that could disturb it since it's standing for itself with no kind of technological stuff around it. so for a TL;DR [link] [comments] |
Google Wifi and Wifi Adapter for Desktop Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:12 PM PST I am attempting to find an adapter for a desktop and have found some pretty good ones. The issue is, they require that I choose the 5ghz band, otherwise they default to slower 2.4ghz band and result in slower speeds. Because of the Google WiFi mesh system, connection is through one SSID and if I'm not wrong, the mesh chooses which channels in the 5ghz and 2.4ghz bands give the fastest speeds, and could change the band entirely if needed. What adapter would work well with this Google WiFi mesh system? [link] [comments] |
Smart TV killing the internet? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:52 PM PST I play on a gaming PC and when any other devices are on I dont have an issue but when my sister turns on her smart TV it breaks the connection on my PC and my Ping goes from a stable 20 to 150+ and makes games unplayable. I logged in on our hub manager and it says her TV is downloading 3tb data and uploading around 30gb. My gaming PC only has 1tb download and 75gb upload. Any reason why her TV is using so much of the internet? My PC is the only device wired in all other devices in the house are wireless and I only have an issue when her TV goes live? ASUSWRT SSID schedule for kid access control? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:17 PM PST My sister's family has a house full of kids, and a house full of devices. They are looking to put some restrictions on them based on time. I know ASUSWRT has parental controls by MAC address, but I was looking to simplify things. I was trying to figure out if there is a way to create a dedicated SSID for the kids to use, and then schedule it so it shutdown down from 10PM-7AM daily. Parents/devices would use the existing SSIDs (new passwords, obviously). I don't see any specific way to do this in it's current state. Before I go deeper, did I miss anything? Otherwise I have two options I am thinking of. First would be to hardwire a second router with the new SSID to the ASUSWRT, then use the parental controls to isolate that MAC ID. I believe as long as I have that set up as an AP, and not a repeater, that should isolate the traffic. The second options seems a little more complicated (and requires a bit more research), but could I set up a guest SSID on the router, and then use cron at the CLI to stop/start it? Anyone done anything like that before? Does DD-WRT have this built in? Maybe in the hotspot functions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:25 PM PST I want to run my cable box and modem out of the same coax input without using a splitter. I was curious if anyone knew of a docsis 3.1/3.0 modem that has a cable out that will run my cable box? I'm hoping I can go out of the wall into modem and branch off to box without losing DB's like I would with a splitter. Any help is appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Do I need a network switch for this? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 05:54 PM PST I just moved into a house that has Ethernet running through the entire house and I plugged in a couple directly to my router, which is some old Netgear one that my roommate had that only does 802.11 n WiFi, and ever since I plugged in the cables to the router I've been having issues with my WiFi. I know some people use pidn't think I needed it but now I don't know. [link] [comments] |
Trying to set up a WEP connection Posted: 29 Nov 2018 05:47 PM PST I'm going to preface by saying I'm kind of clueless about networking outside of connecting my phone and changing the wifi password. I'm trying to get a WEP connection (kind of long story) with my Linksys Wireless-G Router, model# WRT54G. I have a broadband connection with my ISP provided device. I connected an Ethernet cable to the Linksys(internet port) and then connected the Linksys (Ethernet port) to my computer. I changed the password and a bit more and set the connection to WEP. However when I try to connect using a key, it connects to the router but says there is no internet access. Any help why? Everythings online mostly talks about just restarting the components. I'm trying to get a wireless WEP connection on a device without Ethernet port if that helps [link] [comments] |
I've been torrenting and need to contact my service provider. kinda nervous to bring attention Posted: 29 Nov 2018 05:31 PM PST So my download speed used to be 1.6mb. I now only get 500kb/s max when downloading a file. I torrent a lot of shit. Particularly recently. I've downloaded a ton of films. Only for watching myself but yeah. I have a suspicion that they've permanently decreased my speed because of some kind of fair usage policy or whatever. It's possible it's something else but it seems the most likely. My speed has been maxing out at 500kb/s for like 3 months now. I want to call them up and ask why it's so slow but I'm worried about being questioned about torrenting once they look at things or whatever.... is that a likely thing to happen or should I be okay? I mean there have been no warnings thus far. I'm not sure how much it changes things but I'm from the UK. I guess it could be something else slowing down my speed but I don't know what else it could be. Would appreciate any help. Cheers :) [link] [comments] |
Unable to get gigabit speeds from TP link router Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:43 PM PST I recently had gigabit internet installed at my house. When connected directly to the ONT, I get the advertised 1 gb down/250 mb up. However, once connected via my routher (TP-Link TL-ER6020), I can only squeeze 150mb down/150mb up. Some reading has be believe that my router is the bottle neck. That being said, any suggestions for fixes or new router that can give me the gigabit speed? I need something rack mountable (1U). Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Bridging two LANs, each with their own modem/router: what do I need? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:14 AM PST Hi, long-time lurker posting this on behalf of my dad to try and figure out how to bridge two separate networks each with their own modem. Current situation Two distinct cable modems that also act as routers, each with their own Internet connection (same provider, fully separate), wireless network and DHCP. Modem/router 1 serves a TV area (Apple TV, WD networked media player, etc.) and mobile devices, Modem/Router 2 serves a home office with a wired 10G-enabled computer and a networked printer. Target situation Want to buy a 10G-enabled NAS + switch with at least two 10G ports to add behind Router 2 so the office computer and NAS have a 10G link to each other and 1G elsewhere. However, the NAS would as it stands be unavailable to the TV area and mobile devices. What I am thus looking for is a way to bridge the two LANs in such a way that all devices could access the NAS while retaining their distinct access to the Internet. Everything I have found thus far relates to either running a modem/router in bridge mode or bridging two LANs toward a single modem. I would thus be grateful if someone could point me towards what I need to be looking at to make this happen. [link] [comments] |
Turning off wifi on my iPhone completely kills my net. Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:22 PM PST After experimenting I've come to the (unbelievable yet true) conclusion that sometimes my phone whilst connected to my wifi will not load webpages, apps etc and once I turn off the wifi my net completely dies. The modem stays on, just the net light turns off. Any clues as to how to fix this problem? Edit : modem is a TP link td-8980 [link] [comments] |
Modems wireless is acting up while lan is fine Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:55 PM PST Afternoon folks! I have probably a stupid question but could I use a router with a 2in1 modem or will I need to buy a new 2n1/ just a modem and use my other routers I currently have a 2in1 modem/router combo and it's currently acting up. The wireless is spotty at best while lan works fine. I checked setting, factory reset, and did the whole unplug and plug in trick and it's still weird. My router modem combo is a Arris surfboard and my two routers I have are a Cisco and netgear. Thanks for the help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:22 AM PST Hey everyone, I am currently all out of leads and have attempted to troubleshoot my recent (approx. 1 month) Xbox online gaming issues. I will start off by saying that I am in no way, shape or form an expert in PC or Internet issues, but I have somewhat of a general knowledge on both. I've researched several issues and never have been stumped to the point of having to resort to posting my own problem online. I will attempt to be as detailed as possible for my specific issue due to finding a few similar posts with either no information included in the question itself or answers. I will also attach an imgur URL for several subcategory screenshots of my router's (Asus RT-AC3100) settings. I blocked out IP addresses and anything that may be sensitive information. Problem: Approximately 1 month ago I started experiencing Xbox party chat connection issues with only 1 specific friend. Whenever we try to join one another's Xbox live party chat, the person who is joining will have a "connecting" under their Gamertag which last for approximately 30 seconds. Eventually, it will say that the player has disconnected in the party chat. After about 6 times of trying to connect in a party chat, we will eventually successfully connect to one another. Then all of a sudden 30 minutes later, in the middle of a match we will disconnect from the party chat. We got around the headache for a short time by having a 3rd friend make the party chat and invite us to it. With the recent increase of disconnection during the middle of matches, it becomes even more frustrating. I haven't had any prior connection issues with this 1 specific friend. I can connect to anyone else's party chats just fine. We don't have any problems connecting to the same game lobbies and as a last resort, we use the integrated game chat instead of xbox's party chat. More information: I own an Xbox one X and use the only available internet provider offered in my area (Spectrum). I have the Ultra plan which guarantees speeds up to 400 Mbps. Although, I only achieve 200 Mbps when I'm hard-wired into my router with a cat 6 ethernet cable. According to my Network Settings on my Xbox One X, it says I have an Open Nat connection, 200 download, and 20 upload speed, No packet loss, and latency isn't too high. While playing games, I do feel like I experience more lag spikes than a majority of the friends that I play with since I'm often the one saying I'm lagging. I never lag to the point of disconnection from the internet. I've noticed that when the Xbox party chat disconnects with my friend, I experience a random lag spike (200+ ping) which will last a few seconds. Afterward, I'm still in the same match, 0 packet loss and my ping is back to normal (averages around 35-50). But then I can't connect with that 1 friend. We will keep inviting one another to each other's party chat, making new party chat lobbies until it eventually connects. My router and Xbox are updated on the latest firmware. I've restarted my modem and router several times. I've unplugged my Xbox to power down completely and several other general troubleshooting solutions which all have yielded negative results. I believe it's my internet connection and not my friend's connection because of the "Your network settings blocked the party chat" When I was going through my router's settings to screenshot for the post, I noticed that my Xbox's open forward ports weren't there. I am not sure when it when or how they were removed. My Xbox is currently set up on a static IP / MAC address. I also noticed DMZ is enabled. I might have enabled DMZ and deleted the ports when determining if it helped my connection on Xbox. But that wasn't within the last month when I began experiencing the Xbox party chat connection issues or random lag spikes. I rather not do a factory reset on my router unless it's absolutely mandatory. Here are the screenshots of my router settings: https://imgur.com/a/ugdDS2z If additional pictures or details are needed, feel free to let me know. Also, sorry for the extremely long post. Realistic throughput of MoCA 2.0 Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:26 AM PST Hi guys, question is pretty much above. I'm in Germany and an alternative would be Swiss manufacturer Axings EoC products, but they advertise 500 MBit/s and have a realistic throughput of 230 MBit/s. How does MoCA perform? Can anyone run ICSI Netalyzr a few times to check if they get packet loss? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:32 AM PST I think I have some mild network issues. Random drops of livestreams, occasional hangs. Nothing really major, but ICSI tool indicates that I get from 4% to 9% packet loss which seems very high and I'm wondering if it's just reporting nonsense. There were a few tests yesterday where it didn't report any packet loss, but now all the tests I ran were positive. Can anyone check? http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/index.html ETA: WinMTR reports packet loss from ISPs DMZ server (about 2%). ICSI Netalyzr has also reported "The network indicated bursts of packet loss " [link] [comments] |
