Data and Music and Gaming, Oh My!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:50 PM PST

Well, Toto, here we are again.

I've been working on my company's lended Mac for some 2 years now and I am about to chuck it out the window. It's not horrible; but I think my infatuation with Mac has safely subsided. Here's what I need:

Data - I am getting into data management at my job. Hard coding isn't an immediate concern (I am making more administrative and strategic decisions) but it's something that I need to have available in case I need to inspect coding. I am also learning coding more and will need it for personal projects as I refine my skills there. We use Salesforce if that has anything to do with anything.

Music - I am a vocalist and will likely use Pro Tools moving forward. This means room for files, projects, and plugins. While my tracks don't often exceed 30 I have gone up to 50 or 70 tracks so it needs to be able to do quite a bit of work.

Gaming - I won't be gaming every day on it; but I do miss my PC gaming options. Perhaps the biggest thing here is being able to use VR for my personal business and because I am very interested in learning and experiencing VR. But I also just like to game sometimes.

    Other Specficiations -

    1. I'd like to keep the budget no more than 1500 if possible. Ideally less than or around 1000.
    2. Longevity is a big concern. I want it to work for at least 3 years without falling too far behind.
    3. Windows for sure

    What would be your recommendation?

Looking for a relatively cheap laptop that can handle PCSX2 and GameCube emulators.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:15 AM PST

Budget: Ideally less than $600, but cheaper the better. Don't mind if it's used.

OS: Doesn't matter. Just prefer it be compatible with my Xbox One controller (I'm guessing that shouldn't be an issue though)

Misc: I've had a Surface Pro i bought in 2016 when it was new (Surface Pro 4?) and it didn't run a Dolphin (a prominent GameCube emulator) very well. So, I'm guessing it was insufficient or maybe I'm just a novice that's why it didn't work out well.

Looking for a midrange gaming laptop

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:25 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1300 USD ($1400 possible, but $1300 is really freaking me out)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good performance with a not horrible battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 7lbs
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? My current most-performance intensive game is Witcher 3, though modded Fallout 4 and Skyrim are close behind. I would like to play at at least High settings, if not Ultra High. FPS, I'm not too picky about provided it doesn't negatively effect me. I'm not going to freak if I'm only getting 50 FPS and not 60. I'd like to be able to run the next generation of games without trouble. (Near) Future proof
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a good build quality machine.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want this laptop to last me for many years. Excessive heat reducing the longevity is a concern, as is low quality parts. I've had my current Lenovo ThinkPad W530 (maybe it's a W540) since 2012.

    My current front runners are:

    Acer Predator Helios 300

    Lenovo Legion Y7000

My concerns with the Acer are the overheating issues common to the model. I was concerned about the screen dimness but that seems to have been fixed in the 2018 model.

My concerns with the Lenovo are the hinge on the screen is small and scary, and Lenovo had that whole spyware thing. I plan to format the drive(s) before I do anything, but that doesn't get rid of all malware.

    Recommendations/comments/everything welcome!

Old macbook pro replacement (for a gaming laptop)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:16 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <€3000,- / Netherlands (most laptops I want are not available here, so probably the UK/Germany)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want it to be balanced I guess.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Idc about weight (just not over the top), and I want a thin/medium laptop (just not bulky).

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Graphic and motion designer, and 3D beginner. (Nearly every Adobe application and Blender) And I game on console, but I want a windows laptop because I sometimes miss out on games with friends on PC, I can never tag a long with a mac. (Mainly gaming on ps4)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium 60FPS minimum, but I don't mind lowering my settings to get lower temperatures (on a very thin laptop)

Hoping for above high 100FPS for now, I know it will get lower in years

Games: mostly esports atm like overwacht and siege, and some AAA games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality, a good design, at least an okay touch pad and thin bezels. Also good cooling, but on a thin and light I know that's a lot to ask for.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've mostly looked at the Asus Zephyrus M / MSI GS65 / Aero 15x V8 / Razer blade 15

I dropped the Asus because of thick bezels and it's poor battery life. I dropped the MSI because of it's concering build quality (I feel like it will break after 2 years near the hinges)

Was still debating between the Aero and Razer, they are expensive and are poor at cooling, but they seem to be the most promosing.

Something like a MacBook but not a MacBook. A machine that strikes a good balance between great screen and good performance!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:59 AM PST

Before coming here I did some basic research and the laptop that really fit my needs was a MacBook Pro Vega 20 edition.

But in no world could I justify spending upwards of $2000 on a machine that while good cannot even compare a PC build for that price.

I mean it's not even close.

I'm work as an editor (video, photos, vector graphics, etc) and also code in a highly RAM and CPU intensive environment. So part of my job require a machine with excellent screen with ideally 4K and >80% color accuracy, and the other part needs a great high core count processor and a good graphics card. That's why I invested in a 2K144hz monitor, GTX 1080ti & Ryzen 1800x which cost me around $1700 (inc. peripherals and desk and stuff).

And the machine is a beast! Churning through workloads like it's nothing!

And the reason I want a laptop is solely to work remotely like from a client's office, or even on site.

Now obviously I don't expect a laptop's performance to match custom built PC's, but at the very least if the laptop can't even compare, surely it shouldn't cost more than a dedicated rendering beast.

    And there lies the dilemma.

Macbooks have a fantastic built quality, amazing screen, perform good under load, have relatively short render times in Final Cut, overall aesthetics are great, thunderbolt 3, and a lot more.

    But most importantly OSX!

I don't like Windows at all. From it's inconsistent UI, blatant disregard of users' privacy, no native shell support, there's just too many things to mention.

So why am I here? Well, if I can get a laptop with specs I mentioned with the price tag of < $1500 I suppose I can deal with Windows or run Linux on it. If you guys have any other suggestions, lemme know! :D

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally around $1500. Country : India but I can try getting one from any other country.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No preference besides the specs I mentioned above! Also I'm open to trying 2 in 1s.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important. Light and thin preferably.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Please no windows D: (Maybe windows, absolutely love Linux and OSX)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" - 15" seems fine. As long as it can do 4K I'm down.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't plan to play games on this machine. Mostly editing and coding.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen is optional, tho I kinda wanna try it. It'll depend on screen's responsiveness. Fingerprint reader would be great! Or faceID. It's 2018, RIP optical drive, you served well, now rest my friend.

Very specific needs for a Linux laptop. $1500 Max.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:36 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 max.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is crucial to me. I currently have a laptop that only lasts for an hour so it's always plugged in.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Should be no heavier than 2.5 kg.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux. Specifically Arch Linux always running the latest kernel.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. It must be exactly 1920x1080. Also must be IPS.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will do light Steam gaming from time to time. Portal and similar games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minimum 60fps for Portal, BattleBlock Theater, SpeedRunners etc.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen isn't needed. Fingerprint reader would be a plus but also not needed. I would really prefer not to have an optical drive. Also I really hate numpads.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So all in all my required specs are; Intel i7 8550U, Intel i5 8250U ,Ryzen 2500U CPU. I would prefer the Ryzen since AMD has open source drivers.

4-8GB RAM, doesn't matter how much it comes with. But there should be no onboard RAM. It must be fully upgradable. DDR4 preferred.

Ethernet port is a must. HDMI is a must. At least 1 USB 3.1 A or USB 3.0 A port. USB C port would be nice. Micro SD reader would be nice. When it comes to optical drives, I hate them. Would really prefer not to have one, but if there are no other laptops then it's ok.

It must have a 1920x1080 IPS screen. The thinner the bezel, the better.

WiFi card must be upgradable. And there must be no BIOS whitelist for WiFi cards.

M.2 (m) or M.2 (B+M) SSD interface is preferred. But SATA 6 is also nice.

As for the GPU. I would prefer to not have an external GPU. iGPU is enough for me. External's eat up battery life. But if there are no other laptops then I prefer one with AMD Vega or Radeon.

Sorry for the wall of text. Hope someone can help me.

Looking for I guess lower-mid Range Gaming Laptop primarily for smoother than PS4 performance for FFXIV

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:31 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd say... about 650 USD is my budget

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money since I'm normally sitting down and using the laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, I do mostly just care that it's 15.6" since that seems to be the most comfortable size.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Oops I answered this early. 15.6". I mean that does seem to be the standard and it would fight in my current bag.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I might need to use photoshop/GIMP for very light copy paste jobs (for shitposting), but the primary reason to use is FFXIV as the new expansion is creeping up on me next year. Overwatch as well, but I'm okay with it being run on Low if it has higher FPS since my current laptop can only run it at 480p 15FPS and I have quit playing it due to that. Another lesser priority one would be the ability to watch 1080p mkvs, but I can sacrifice down to 720p anyways.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FFXIV is the biggest priority. As long as it runs smoother than my PS4, potentially 60FPS maybe High?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Hopefully no touchscreen, but I can just disable that in Device manager if needed. I would want an optical drive but it's not the highest priority. If it's standard now, then a numpad is nice cause it's familiar to fill out forms with online. Build quality might be a concern cause I do like to carry my laptop with me frequently.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If it has an accessible hard drive I can change out is fine.

Replacing a 9 Year-Old MBP, looking for longevity: Thinkpad X1 Extreme or XPS 15 9570?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:53 AM PST

I've been using the same MacBook Pro for nearly 10 years now (Mid-2009 model), mainly because I've been able to replace and upgrade components. I've upgraded my hard drive twice, upgraded and maxed out my RAM (8GB), and I'm on my 2nd trackpad. I LOVE my MBP. It's served me very well as a digital content creation tool with LightRoom, Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya, and it's been my dedicated audio production machine via Logic. I love the ecosystem, the programs, everything.

    But.

Apple has killed user-upgradable parts by soldering everything to the logic board, and they've declared war on non-Apple repairs with their lovely little T2 chip. I don't want to support a business that runs like this, plus I know there are many small programs that only come as .exe files, and I can't run natively in OSX.

The front runners are the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme and the Dell XPS 15 9570. Here are my pros and cons of each:

    XPS 15 9570

    PRO CON
Good build quality Short Key travel
96% sRGB coverage Doesn't pass LatencyMonitor/Can't play realtime audio
15 hour battery Maximum 32GB RAM
Smooth glass trackpad One Slot for storage
4K option 4K option is much more expensive and decreases battery life
    GTX 1050Ti Quality Control issues
More Cost Effective Graphics Throttling/BIOS issues

    Thinkpad X1 Extreme

    PRO CON
Military spec build quality Unknown trackpad texture/quality
Longer key travel 88.6% sRGB coverage on FHD Screen
Passes LatencyMonitor/good for audio produciton Lower battery life than XPS (even with FHD Screen)
    Maximum 64GB RAM PointStick Trackpoint
Two slots for storage expansion I feel like to do photo editing I need the 4K Screen option
4K Screen option has 100% sRGB and 88.5% AdobeRGB coverage 4K Option sucks down 3 hours of battery life compared to FHD screen
    Better port variety

I don't know if the FHD screen on the X1E is good enough for the work I do in Adobe Creative Suite, especially color accuracy for photo editing. Also, the audio issues with the XPS 15 are pretty much a deal breaker.

The only reasons I'm not just going full-bore for the X1E with the 4K screen is the cost difference. I can get the XPS and a new Wacom Intuos tablet for almost $300 less than the X1E, and the XPS with an FHD display has almost 2.5x the battery life (just wifi browsing).

    I'm basing all this off of these reviews from Notebookcheck.net: XPS - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-2018-9570-8300H-GTX-1050-97Wh-Laptop-Review.308420.0.html X1E FHD - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme-i5-FHD-GTX-1050-Ti-Max-Q-Laptop-Review.339576.0.html X1E 4K HDR - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme-i7-4K-HDR-GTX-1050-Ti-Max-Q-Laptop-Review.335608.0.html#toc-energy-management

Looking for a good gaming laptop in the range of $500 or lower

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:42 PM PST

I have a friend who would like to buy his son a laptop for Christmas and he asked me for some advice. I've been looking into gaming laptops for myself but there is a lot of things I still don't understand. He says that his son wants his own laptop so that he can play games like Terraria, Minecraft, and Fortnite. I know that Minecraft and terraria can run on almost any thing but Fortnite might be a little tricky so I advised that perhaps he should stay away from integrated graphics cards.

So, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what he should be looking for? Is there any specific laptops he could look into that are reliable and will last a decent amount of time? He saw a sale on the HP Laptop - 15t touch with Intel i7 and wanted to know if that would be worth it for $499. I told him that it probably wouldn't be good for what he is looking for but am I wrong to say that? Like I said I have some knowledge on gaming but when it comes to specific pieces of hardware I get easily lost so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Gaming laptop - stuck between two choices

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:31 AM PST

I've been searching for a gaming laptop with a budget of around 1100$ and I narrowed my choices to these two. (I am from Croatia so the sites will be in Croatian)

    https://www.links.hr/hr/prijenosno-racunalo-acer-swift-3-nx-gquex-010-core-i7-8550u-8gb-ssd-512gb-geforce-mx150-14-led-fhd-linux-sivo-015850077

This one is 1000$. I saw some reviews of it and I like it because of the battery life (7 hours) and portability, and yet it still has a dedicated graphics card.

    https://www.links.hr/hr/prijenosno-racunalo-dell-inspiron-3579-core-i7-8750h-8gb-ssd-256gb-geforce-gtx-1050ti-15-6-led-fhd-linux-crno-015040066

This one is 1150$ and to be honest it seems like a bit of an overkill. Also as far as I've seen battery life isn't that good (4 hours)

For a gaming laptop, there would be no doubt which of these two to pick, but the reason I'm not sure is because I don't play all the newest, AAA titles. Most of the games I play include isometric RPGs (Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity), strategy (Civ 6, Europa Universalis, etc.) and world building (Cities Skylines). The point I'm trying to make is that I think I don't play games that are very demanding so buying the Dell Inspirion in the link might be overkill, and I would like to save money if possible or get battery life instead. But on the other hand I would like to buy a laptop that can easily serve me for at least 3 years.

Thanks for your time in advance!

[US] In need of a sturdy, high performance laptop ($1000-2000) for processing data and coding in grad school

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:38 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-2000 USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I need something with a fast processor and lots of memory. A good battery life would be nice but isn't a dealbreaker. I don't prefer a 2 in 1 form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness aren't hugely important to me. I'll need to transport it from home to school most days, and will occasionally travel with it on a plane, so I just need something that isn't ridiculously heavy or bulky.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15.5"
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* I don't game, but I will be writing some code and processing large data sets using MATLAB and Igor. I'd also like something on which I can potentially do some minor photo and video editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An optical drive would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like this computer to last a long time. I'm in grad school at the moment but hope to use this after for both work and general use as well. The most important thing to me is that it'll last at least 6 years and will allow me to code and process/store large data sets without lagging.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:50 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Around 1000$ in US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply

I don't like 2 in 1 form factor. The best for me should be best specs for the money with ok battery

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important but it shouldn't be too heavy because I will carry it around

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15''

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am learning software engineering at college and prefer a laptop that can handle programming well both during university course and when I leave school for co-op/work. I also do some light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play Dota 2 mostly and I want the laptop to run the game well, may be run stable 60 FPS on medium setting at least

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)?

Good feeling keyboard, touchscreen isn't necessary, and not overheat when I play.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion

I really want a good quality laptop that I can use for a very long time for learning and for work later on, so I can raise my budget to 1200$ if necessary

The laptop should have good storage: at least 8GB RAM and at least 512GB Hard Drive, core i5/i7

Can you give me 3-4 different options for me to consider and explain why?

Thank you very much in advance!

Budget Gaming Laptop - is upgradability worth it?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:11 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm trying to sell off my MBP 13" Retina (Late 2012) and buy a laptop with some more current specs and is suitable for some light and irregular gaming, non-demanding games like WoW, Civ and perhaps Cities Skylines (maybe that one is more GPU intensive!).

I'm pretty set on one of the Dell laptops and I'm torn between 2 deals here in Canada. There is a G3 with a 1050ti on sale for 750CDN, and a G5 with a 1050 for 850CDN. The G3 seems like a no-brainer, except that the G5 also has Thunderbolt 3, which the G3 does not.

My thinking is that in the future maybe I would prefer getting an eGPU instead of a whole new laptop if I wanted some more horsepower. If it were say in 5/6 years time I could be looking at used gfx cards which are 1 or 2 generations old and would still be getting a marked improvement even with the bottlenecking from TB3.

So the question is, between my 2 choices, is Thunderbolt 3 worth an extra $100 and a slight performance drop in the built-in GPU?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

[US] $2000 Work Laptop able to run AutoCAD and Revit

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:14 PM PST

Looking for a laptop that is lightweight and portable that is able to run AutoCAD and other programs. I'll likely play some games on it as well (LoL, CS:GO, PUBG).

    Budget is around $2000.

I was initially looking at a Gigabyte Aero 15X but my order got cancelled and was told they are no longer in stock. Not sure if there is a comparable alternative or I should just wait for it to come back into stock.

Looking for a laptop ~1200$ (Gaming, Video editing, Recording, Livestreaming)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:59 PM PST

I'm liking the acer predator helios 300's specs, but I'm worried about some people saying that it overheats. Is this actually a big issue with it, especially since I will be doing mainly CPU intensive tasks, not really that much gpu (streaming for example).

If there is another laptop suggestion I would prefer it's cpu to not be worse than the i7-8750h and preferably 16gb of ram. Thankyou guys

    College student high performance laptop!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$759

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I like the 2 in 1 concept, although not a necessity. I'm looking for best specs for the money, and good battery life is needed for time spent at school.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? One of the most important factors! I'm really drawn to the <2.9 lbs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not at the moment but no telling in the future so I'd say to be safe assume I'm playing league of legends or world of Warcraft.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Refer to previous answer. No high demand on high graphic settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability required, good key board preferred. All the others are welcome benefits.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been really eyeing the Lenovo yoga 720/730 and the Asus ZenBook UX331UA, the yoga seems better spec wise. This thread isn't specifically about these two though.

Links of the two: Yoga: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-730-2-in-1-13-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-platinum/6201041.p?skuId=6201041

    ZenBook: ASUS ZenBook 13 Ultra-Slim Laptop 13.3" FHD Display, Intel 8th gen Core i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB M.2 SSD, Win10, Backlit KB, FP, Icicle Gold, UX331UA-AS51 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FW7D635/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tYiaCb23C2TQ9

Feel free to suggest others if there are better value!

Something for Photoshop/Lightroom and music production in Ableton

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:14 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $400-700, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery life is potentially important, 2-1 doesn't matter but I'm open to it. As far as form factor goes I don't want something gigantic that looks like a gaming laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness, or sleekness is a plus but not a dealbreaker.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Either Windows or Mac OS. I have a Windows desktop but I've owned Mac laptops in the past. I'm open to either, though I know Windows would probably be better value for money.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo, maybe eventually video editing. Music production.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Gaming isn't a concern.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good build quality would be nice. Also a decent amount of storage.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This is something I might not be buying for a month or two, but I'm thinking/planning about now.

    Thank you!
