Data and Music and Gaming, Oh My! Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:50 PM PST Well, Toto, here we are again. I've been working on my company's lended Mac for some 2 years now and I am about to chuck it out the window. It's not horrible; but I think my infatuation with Mac has safely subsided. Here's what I need: Data - I am getting into data management at my job. Hard coding isn't an immediate concern (I am making more administrative and strategic decisions) but it's something that I need to have available in case I need to inspect coding. I am also learning coding more and will need it for personal projects as I refine my skills there. We use Salesforce if that has anything to do with anything. Music - I am a vocalist and will likely use Pro Tools moving forward. This means room for files, projects, and plugins. While my tracks don't often exceed 30 I have gone up to 50 or 70 tracks so it needs to be able to do quite a bit of work. Gaming - I won't be gaming every day on it; but I do miss my PC gaming options. Perhaps the biggest thing here is being able to use VR for my personal business and because I am very interested in learning and experiencing VR. But I also just like to game sometimes. Other Specficiations -
What would be your recommendation? [link] [comments]
Looking for a relatively cheap laptop that can handle PCSX2 and GameCube emulators. Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:15 AM PST Budget: Ideally less than $600, but cheaper the better. Don't mind if it's used. OS: Doesn't matter. Just prefer it be compatible with my Xbox One controller (I'm guessing that shouldn't be an issue though) Misc: I've had a Surface Pro i bought in 2016 when it was new (Surface Pro 4?) and it didn't run a Dolphin (a prominent GameCube emulator) very well. So, I'm guessing it was insufficient or maybe I'm just a novice that's why it didn't work out well. [link] [comments]
Looking for a midrange gaming laptop Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:25 PM PST
My current front runners are: My concerns with the Acer are the overheating issues common to the model. I was concerned about the screen dimness but that seems to have been fixed in the 2018 model. My concerns with the Lenovo are the hinge on the screen is small and scary, and Lenovo had that whole spyware thing. I plan to format the drive(s) before I do anything, but that doesn't get rid of all malware. Recommendations/comments/everything welcome! [link] [comments]
Old macbook pro replacement (for a gaming laptop) Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:16 PM PST
Hoping for above high 100FPS for now, I know it will get lower in years Games: mostly esports atm like overwacht and siege, and some AAA games.
I dropped the Asus because of thick bezels and it's poor battery life. I dropped the MSI because of it's concering build quality (I feel like it will break after 2 years near the hinges) Was still debating between the Aero and Razer, they are expensive and are poor at cooling, but they seem to be the most promosing. Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:59 AM PST Before coming here I did some basic research and the laptop that really fit my needs was a MacBook Pro Vega 20 edition. But in no world could I justify spending upwards of $2000 on a machine that while good cannot even compare a PC build for that price. I mean it's not even close. I'm work as an editor (video, photos, vector graphics, etc) and also code in a highly RAM and CPU intensive environment. So part of my job require a machine with excellent screen with ideally 4K and >80% color accuracy, and the other part needs a great high core count processor and a good graphics card. That's why I invested in a 2K144hz monitor, GTX 1080ti & Ryzen 1800x which cost me around $1700 (inc. peripherals and desk and stuff). And the machine is a beast! Churning through workloads like it's nothing! And the reason I want a laptop is solely to work remotely like from a client's office, or even on site. Now obviously I don't expect a laptop's performance to match custom built PC's, but at the very least if the laptop can't even compare, surely it shouldn't cost more than a dedicated rendering beast. And there lies the dilemma. Macbooks have a fantastic built quality, amazing screen, perform good under load, have relatively short render times in Final Cut, overall aesthetics are great, thunderbolt 3, and a lot more. But most importantly OSX! I don't like Windows at all. From it's inconsistent UI, blatant disregard of users' privacy, no native shell support, there's just too many things to mention. So why am I here? Well, if I can get a laptop with specs I mentioned with the price tag of < $1500 I suppose I can deal with Windows or run Linux on it. If you guys have any other suggestions, lemme know! :D

Very specific needs for a Linux laptop. $1500 Max. Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:36 AM PST
So all in all my required specs are; Intel i7 8550U, Intel i5 8250U ,Ryzen 2500U CPU. I would prefer the Ryzen since AMD has open source drivers. 4-8GB RAM, doesn't matter how much it comes with. But there should be no onboard RAM. It must be fully upgradable. DDR4 preferred. Ethernet port is a must. HDMI is a must. At least 1 USB 3.1 A or USB 3.0 A port. USB C port would be nice. Micro SD reader would be nice. When it comes to optical drives, I hate them. Would really prefer not to have one, but if there are no other laptops then it's ok. It must have a 1920x1080 IPS screen. The thinner the bezel, the better. WiFi card must be upgradable. And there must be no BIOS whitelist for WiFi cards. M.2 (m) or M.2 (B+M) SSD interface is preferred. But SATA 6 is also nice. As for the GPU. I would prefer to not have an external GPU. iGPU is enough for me. External's eat up battery life. But if there are no other laptops then I prefer one with AMD Vega or Radeon. Sorry for the wall of text. Hope someone can help me. [link] [comments]

Replacing a 9 Year-Old MBP, looking for longevity: Thinkpad X1 Extreme or XPS 15 9570? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:53 AM PST I've been using the same MacBook Pro for nearly 10 years now (Mid-2009 model), mainly because I've been able to replace and upgrade components. I've upgraded my hard drive twice, upgraded and maxed out my RAM (8GB), and I'm on my 2nd trackpad. I LOVE my MBP. It's served me very well as a digital content creation tool with LightRoom, Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya, and it's been my dedicated audio production machine via Logic. I love the ecosystem, the programs, everything. But. Apple has killed user-upgradable parts by soldering everything to the logic board, and they've declared war on non-Apple repairs with their lovely little T2 chip. I don't want to support a business that runs like this, plus I know there are many small programs that only come as .exe files, and I can't run natively in OSX. The front runners are the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme and the Dell XPS 15 9570. Here are my pros and cons of each: XPS 15 9570
Thinkpad X1 Extreme
I don't know if the FHD screen on the X1E is good enough for the work I do in Adobe Creative Suite, especially color accuracy for photo editing. Also, the audio issues with the XPS 15 are pretty much a deal breaker. The only reasons I'm not just going full-bore for the X1E with the 4K screen is the cost difference. I can get the XPS and a new Wacom Intuos tablet for almost $300 less than the X1E, and the XPS with an FHD display has almost 2.5x the battery life (just wifi browsing). I'm basing all this off of these reviews from Notebookcheck.net: XPS - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-2018-9570-8300H-GTX-1050-97Wh-Laptop-Review.308420.0.html X1E FHD - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme-i5-FHD-GTX-1050-Ti-Max-Q-Laptop-Review.339576.0.html X1E 4K HDR - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme-i7-4K-HDR-GTX-1050-Ti-Max-Q-Laptop-Review.335608.0.html#toc-energy-management [link] [comments]

Looking for a good gaming laptop in the range of $500 or lower Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:42 PM PST I have a friend who would like to buy his son a laptop for Christmas and he asked me for some advice. I've been looking into gaming laptops for myself but there is a lot of things I still don't understand. He says that his son wants his own laptop so that he can play games like Terraria, Minecraft, and Fortnite. I know that Minecraft and terraria can run on almost any thing but Fortnite might be a little tricky so I advised that perhaps he should stay away from integrated graphics cards. So, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what he should be looking for? Is there any specific laptops he could look into that are reliable and will last a decent amount of time? He saw a sale on the HP Laptop - 15t touch with Intel i7 and wanted to know if that would be worth it for $499. I told him that it probably wouldn't be good for what he is looking for but am I wrong to say that? Like I said I have some knowledge on gaming but when it comes to specific pieces of hardware I get easily lost so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Gaming laptop - stuck between two choices Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:31 AM PST I've been searching for a gaming laptop with a budget of around 1100$ and I narrowed my choices to these two. (I am from Croatia so the sites will be in Croatian) This one is 1000$. I saw some reviews of it and I like it because of the battery life (7 hours) and portability, and yet it still has a dedicated graphics card. This one is 1150$ and to be honest it seems like a bit of an overkill. Also as far as I've seen battery life isn't that good (4 hours) For a gaming laptop, there would be no doubt which of these two to pick, but the reason I'm not sure is because I don't play all the newest, AAA titles. Most of the games I play include isometric RPGs (Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity), strategy (Civ 6, Europa Universalis, etc.) and world building (Cities Skylines). The point I'm trying to make is that I think I don't play games that are very demanding so buying the Dell Inspirion in the link might be overkill, and I would like to save money if possible or get battery life instead. But on the other hand I would like to buy a laptop that can easily serve me for at least 3 years. Thanks for your time in advance! [link] [comments]

I want to use power bank for the laptop so I can keep it up for a long time without cable. -It would be better if you guys provide the power bank as well that will work with the laptop. College student looking for durable laptop for programming and light gaming Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:50 PM PST
Around 1000$ in US
I don't like 2 in 1 form factor. The best for me should be best specs for the money with ok battery
Not important but it shouldn't be too heavy because I will carry it around
Windows
15''
I am learning software engineering at college and prefer a laptop that can handle programming well both during university course and when I leave school for co-op/work. I also do some light gaming
I play Dota 2 mostly and I want the laptop to run the game well, may be run stable 60 FPS on medium setting at least
Good feeling keyboard, touchscreen isn't necessary, and not overheat when I play.
I really want a good quality laptop that I can use for a very long time for learning and for work later on, so I can raise my budget to 1200$ if necessary The laptop should have good storage: at least 8GB RAM and at least 512GB Hard Drive, core i5/i7 Can you give me 3-4 different options for me to consider and explain why? Thank you very much in advance! [link] [comments]

Budget Gaming Laptop - is upgradability worth it? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 10:11 PM PST Hi all, I'm trying to sell off my MBP 13" Retina (Late 2012) and buy a laptop with some more current specs and is suitable for some light and irregular gaming, non-demanding games like WoW, Civ and perhaps Cities Skylines (maybe that one is more GPU intensive!). I'm pretty set on one of the Dell laptops and I'm torn between 2 deals here in Canada. There is a G3 with a 1050ti on sale for 750CDN, and a G5 with a 1050 for 850CDN. The G3 seems like a no-brainer, except that the G5 also has Thunderbolt 3, which the G3 does not. My thinking is that in the future maybe I would prefer getting an eGPU instead of a whole new laptop if I wanted some more horsepower. If it were say in 5/6 years time I could be looking at used gfx cards which are 1 or 2 generations old and would still be getting a marked improvement even with the bottlenecking from TB3. So the question is, between my 2 choices, is Thunderbolt 3 worth an extra $100 and a slight performance drop in the built-in GPU? Thanks in advance for your advice! [US] $2000 Work Laptop able to run AutoCAD and Revit Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:14 PM PST Looking for a laptop that is lightweight and portable that is able to run AutoCAD and other programs. I'll likely play some games on it as well (LoL, CS:GO, PUBG). Budget is around $2000. I was initially looking at a Gigabyte Aero 15X but my order got cancelled and was told they are no longer in stock. Not sure if there is a comparable alternative or I should just wait for it to come back into stock. [link] [comments]
Looking for a laptop ~1200$ (Gaming, Video editing, Recording, Livestreaming) Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:59 PM PST I'm liking the acer predator helios 300's specs, but I'm worried about some people saying that it overheats. Is this actually a big issue with it, especially since I will be doing mainly CPU intensive tasks, not really that much gpu (streaming for example). If there is another laptop suggestion I would prefer it's cpu to not be worse than the i7-8750h and preferably 16gb of ram. Thankyou guys [link] [comments]

Something for Photoshop/Lightroom and music production in Ableton Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:14 PM PST
$400-700, USA
Battery life is potentially important, 2-1 doesn't matter but I'm open to it. As far as form factor goes I don't want something gigantic that looks like a gaming laptop.
Thinness, or sleekness is a plus but not a dealbreaker.
Either Windows or Mac OS. I have a Windows desktop but I've owned Mac laptops in the past. I'm open to either, though I know Windows would probably be better value for money.
13-15"
Photo, maybe eventually video editing. Music production.
Gaming isn't a concern.
Good build quality would be nice. Also a decent amount of storage.
This is something I might not be buying for a month or two, but I'm thinking/planning about now. Thank you! [link] [comments]
