A Great Laptop for a Concept Artist/ Architect?

A Great Laptop for a Concept Artist/ Architect?

A Great Laptop for a Concept Artist/ Architect?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 03:35 AM PDT

As mentioned in the title I will need a new, reliable laptop mainly for digital painting and some 3d (occasional gaming is a plus). I am looking for something with a great screen as I'll be travelling quite a bit and I can't rely on an external monitor. I also guess that I'll need at least a mid range gpu, expecially for 3d modeling and renderings. Ideally I'm looking for something around 15''.

I was very close to pick the new Dell XPS 15 9750, but I got really worried about the incredible number of issues that this laptop seems to have (and the terrible experiences that came along with that). I own an Alienware X51 R2 and I also had several unsolved problems, so I know that it can indeed happen and it's not funny at all, expecially if that's the only machine you have.

Lastly I'm not interested in switching to a Macbook.

Could you guys give me any advice? I feel lost... every high end laptop of any brand seems either to miss something or to be little reliable :/

    Gaming Laptop, Nothing Crazy

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 600-900$ Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, such as Destiny 2, FFXIV, Fallout 76

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games listed above, Don't need high settings, just need the game to run smooth at Low-Medium settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Don't matter

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just to summarize my needs for the laptop, I work out of town for 18 days and get 9 off. My desktop at home is the powerhouse, I just need a gaming laptop that can play those above games at good framerate, as far as the settings go I don't need something that will run those at max. Just something that will run them smooth and last me hopefully a couple years for that price range. Thank you in advanced!

    Laptop for Mechanical Engineering Student

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm Canadian, living in Ottawa. I'd like to spend under 1,500 Canadian if possible, however I'd be willing to pay a bit more if I were confident it could last me all 4 years of my program.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life would be nice!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It doesn't need to be the lightest or the thinnest, however I will be carrying it around everyday, so I am not looking for anything too bulky. I currently have a MacBook Air (13-inch, early 2015) and I like it's size.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows (as far as I know it's preferred for running the programs I'll be using, but correct me if I'm wrong because I'm just regurgitating what I've been told)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I like the 13 inch, but overall it doesn't matter that much.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I've been told to expect to use CAD programs, simulation tools, modelling tools, digital prototyping software and engineering calculation and conversion tools. Because I am unsure of exactly what I will be using in the next few years, I'd like to be safe and get a laptop that can run most of these types of programs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not a huge gamer (gaming won't be the main function of this laptop), but I do play Civ 5 and a few others

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I've done some research into the basic minimum requirements for engineering laptops in general and come up with the following: 8GB of RAM, 500GB SSD, Screen Resolution at least 1600 x 900, Intel i7 CPU, Dedicated Graphics Card (a few also said Discrete graphics card but I wasn't sure if there was a difference TBH).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like to be able to buy the laptop in the next few days if possible (if the perfect option means I have to wait I'd be willing, but I'm currently making due with my MacBook being dual-booted and I found out I'll be doing CAD later this week). I could also use some advice on where to buy it. I've heard buying from the manufacturer is better, but I'm unsure of exactly how I should go about it.

Thank you in advance for any advice! I probably sound hopeless when it comes to this, and that's because I am. Hopefully I'll be able to learn a few things through this process!

laptop for incoming chemistry PhD student, photographer

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:24 PM PDT

I am just starting out in a chemistry PhD program. My research will not be computationally focused, but there is a high likelihood that I will frequently be running some molecular simulations. I am also an avid (semi-pro) photographer, who shoots and processes large RAW files, primarily using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop. I am pretty sure I would like at least 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: At most, I can spend ~$2200. I am in the USA.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The 2-in-1 is something that has definitely been of interest, although not necessary. I must have the specs listed above (16GB RAM, 512 SSD).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light and thin is nice, but not critical.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I am open to either Windows or Mac.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 11 inches is too small, 15 inches is too big. Looking for 13-14.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I frequently edit RAW image files using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (very frequently) and Adobe Photoshop (once in a while).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I am not into gaming at all.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and solid build quality are preferable.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. For the last 5-6 years, I have been using a MacBook Pro. While I am somewhat tempted to get a new MacBook Pro, the new shallow keyboard and high price for features is somewhat deterring me. I recently tried a friend's new Dell laptop, and I did not like the "sticky" trackpad at all!

I appreciate the help in narrowing this down!

Looking for a photo/music/video editing laptop, with minimal gaming specs [UK]

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 03:25 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: Under £1000, and in the UK. May be able to go a little higher for the right machine.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications possible, and a solid battery life (5-6 hours) under low stress conditions.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, or Mac if any can be found in budget.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Sony Vegas, After Effects, FL Studio. Any and all consumer grade creative applications, essentially. I would also like some minimal gaming functionality, so dedicated graphics is ideal, however low-mid level would suit me fine.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Lowest playable settings on games such as GTAV, Battlefield 1, Civ VI.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is a priority - I would like the machine to last at least 5 years. A solid keyboard too, as I will be doing plenty of typing. The rest I could take it or leave it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A lot of the machines I have looked at so far have a 'gamery' aesthetic, with red backlighting and sharp contours, which I would rather avoid (why do manufacturers do this?). Some of them, such as the Dell G5 and Lenovo Legion, also seem to have sub-par displays which is a big turn off as I will being working with a lot of visual content.

Thank you in advance for your comments and suggestions!

    Mid-high performance laptop, good screen

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $1000-$1800, lower is better.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. What's a 2 in 1? Is it like a tablet? Touch screen is good. Pressure sensitive stylus is very good. Battery life is less important than battery reliability. Performance is definitely a requirement.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lower the better, but not that important. 15.6" screen or smaller is good though.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10. Secondary linux installation is a possibility.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferred 15.6" or less.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing with GIMP, digital painting with Krita, games like Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft, etc, but also War Thunder. Possibly others. Custom code I make that may or may not use graphics or demand performance, and mb ay or may not be highly threaded.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Kerbal Space program, good performance with max settings and several hundred parts. War Thunder: good performance but no need for movie quality. Other games: I want it to run most games at least reasonably. It's okay if it's at medium settings but it should run them.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen is valuable but not strictly a requirement. Keyboard should use F keys as F keys by default. Build quality is important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Screen of higher than 1080p is preferred. 4K is ideal. Kerboard keys having flat sides not sloped is a big plus. As I said before, though screen is a big plus. Anything without a dedicated card is a straight up no. 1 TB SSD is a strong preference. SSD storage preferred to HDD.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I just don't want it to be too small
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming only. Stuff like Visual Studio, Python, Java.

[Canada] Basic laptop for a student (writing, light web-browsing)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 08:23 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am a Canadian student that would like a laptop for writing essays and the such. It's basically going to be a Windows-powered typewriter.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $550 CAD, Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 or 15,6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, not even solitaire. I will use word and a reference software (Zotero)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A somewhat reliable build quality would be nice, but I won't expect a miracle at that price point

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would get a chromebook if I didn't need Zotero so badly. I'm also not a huge fan of Google Docs.

I would like the laptop to last me at least a few years through college.

I may consider going refurbished if it's worth it.

    Thanks !

Good specs' for Graphic Designer about to graduate?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:52 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $850. Maybe more if it's worth it! I'd buy in USA or Mexico

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

best specs for money! but at least a decent battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

it's kind of important, I would prefer a thinner and not too heavy laptop! But if it means sacrifice performance then no.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" would be ideal, would go lower or higher if it's worth it

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes! mostly editing. I'm a graphic design student about to graduate so I need something that can handle Adobe software. What I use the most is Photoshop and Illustrator, InDesign and Sony Vegas occasionally and want to use more of After Effects (and maybe other video programs) and be able to render (this would be occasionally as I'm just experimenting with video).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not a gamer, but would be great if I could ocasionally play games like Sims 4. Don't know about FPS but I'm not too fussy about high settings, I don't mind, I just want decent quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A backlit keyboard would be good since I do most of my work at night. And I'd really appreciate a full keyboard (numeric) since I use it A LOT (but I know that might make it more expensive so I'm willing to sacrifice that)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been making my own research and maybe it's too picky of me to ask this but I would rather if the laptop doesn't look too "manly", like a Gamer one... I shouldn't expect a "pretty looking laptop" with the specs I want and my budget. I really don't mind what it looks like as long as it isn't too rough. I'm a female and also I would like something "professional" looking as I'll be using it for and at work.

+Plus! I'm not sure if this is helpful at all but the laptop I currently have is a HP Pavilion 15-n210dx. specs:

    • AMD A8 4555M / 1.6 GHz
    • 4 GB RAM
    • 750 GB HDD
    • AMD Radeon HD 7600G

This laptop has been with me for +5 years, including all of my career and it might seem like poor specs but actually it stills works for me, runs pretty good all the programs I use. But of couse I want an upgrade since I feel like I'm asking her a lot with the work I do, and maybe I'm just used to it and could be working a lot smoother!

My main problems with the one I have are that I try not to render on it, since I think it'd be too much; that the screen is SO BAD, I turn brightness to a 100% and sometimes when there is just a little hint of sun I can't see anything; that the colors aren't accurate which causes me trouble when I print my designs; that the battery doesn't last for more than 2 hours until I have to plug it in; and that sometimes it is a little slow for me.

On the good side there's that it still works, I mean, I still use it! And also the touch screen has helped me a lot, but I know I can't really ask for a touchscreen on a new laptop (because budget).

Sorry if this is too much info! lol, also sorry for my English since is not my first language.

Seeking Laptop Suggestions for Specs below

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:10 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm looking for a new laptop I'll be using for work/personal with a mix of working at home and traveling with it. I don't have a desktop so this will be using this for everything.

My uses typically include, working on google Drive, downloading pdfs, docs, etc. Programs I use occasionally (not on a professional level) are Photoshop, Illustrator, Sony Vegas for video editing occasionally, and 3D CAD software like solidworks every now and then.

    My budget is $500-$1000

I was doing some research and compiled some specs I believe will be sufficient for my needs:

    Screen: Prefer 15.6" [Could make do with 13" or 14"] , IPS screen , HD 1920 x 1080

Keyboard: Full number pad (would be nice to have)

Touchpad - Microsoft precision touchpad (video online mentioned this but I will often use a mouse)

Battery - At least 6 hours laptop (preferably 8-10 hours)

Ports: HDMI, Headphone jack, Microphone, at least 2 ports of USB 3.0, SD Card reader (any other ports recommended?)

Processor: Intel i5 minimum - (Try to buy latest Gen processor - 8th gen)

RAM - 8GB minimum (If possible get 16GB)

    SSD - 256GB SSD minimum

Graphics Card - Integrated Graphics card is OK

If buying one with Dedicated Graphics card, look for Nvidia GTX 1050 - Look for Nvidia GTX or AMD RX

Portability would also be awesome to keep in mind, I like the look of the thin laptops such as the Dell XPS 13/15 with the thin bezel around the screen.

I also saw some have touch screens / fold up, if it doesn't effect price, would this be a bonus to have or do you sacrifice performance for these features?

I love Costco's return policy for security if anything goes wrong but believe there are better deals somewhere else for the price. Also, is it worth buying warranty?

It would be very helpful to get suggestions best brands / model of laptop and recommended place to purchase.

    Thanks in advance!

Light 2-1 for Taking Notes and Doing College Work

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 09:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700 USD, United States
    • **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? a good batty life, and high specs actually... I would like a 2-1 as I need to take notes and draw diagrams for science classes. Battery life is also very important as I want this to last the entire day of classes.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness and weight are very important as I need to be able to carry it to classes, library, etc.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. only small games, i have another computer for more demanding games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? dota 2 at 60+ fps on low settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen, good keyboard, and pen support
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically I would like a light weight laptop that I can take notes with. Furthermore, I would like to play games (dota) whenever I am on long distance or have to go home for a little bit. I don't think high end gpus (I guess slightly better than integrated graphics) are necessary though I would like a good cpu

I need a laptop for gaming somewhere between 800-850 USD

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 08:21 PM PDT

I plan on playing pretty stressful games so I need something powerful to support that. Battery life isn't too much of a problem but I do want something decently strong with a good screen. Was thinking about an MSI GL63 or GV62 but I'm open to all suggestions. Thank you in advance!

~$1000 AUD, for school and light editing and special effects.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:06 AM PDT

Sorry for re-posting I want to get a suggestion soon before go back to school and make a bad decision on a laptop.

I mostly need it for Word but also video editing and some special effects,

I know this basically a copy paste this from r/computers but I need to order it soon because i only have 1 week on holidays left and i need time to get it set up and delivery time.

FAQ thing the rules told me to do.

Total budget and country of purchase.

roughly $1000 not over $1300 lower if possible and Australia Queensland, I can order from another country if needed.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Don't overly care on form factor, good battery life is important because of around 8 hour days.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

as light as possible preferably because at my school we have no way to store laptops or books and have to carry them everywhere. Thickness doesn't bother me.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

not Chromium or Mac but I can install windows 8.1 from my old laptop if needed

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

nothing smaller then 15 inch, it does become hard to edit on a smaller screen.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will be doing some special effects nothing too heavy along with video editing and the Microsoft word set/package.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I will being doing some light stuff, older games and retro styled games things like Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Faster Than Light.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A space for a second drive, not install because i have a 500gb laptop drive waiting to be used from my previous laptop. A good keyboard would be nice but not a necessity.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I though I might just add I know about desktop hardware so you have no need to dumb the discussion down I just don't know that much about laptop hardware in the way of which parts are good for what task. I also want to add that I would like the laptop to last a long time, for example my older laptop worked well for around 5 years and only now is it stopped being able to run things effectively.

Rec me a portable laptop for writing. Nice design and noisy keyboard are a plus

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:35 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:About USD 450, might be a bit more, but a less expensive laptop would also be appreciated. I would prefer to get a new one, as in my experience used laptops break down after a year or so. Country is Poland * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Never had a 2 in 2, might try but it's not a priority. Battery life definitely is. Best specifications for the money are important, though please keep in mind I have a desktop for heavy gaming * How important is weight and thinness to you? -VERY important, I want to take it with me to coffeshops to write in peace. It would be very nice if it was light- * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -I would like Windows TBH, but consider Mac too if if the laptop has great keyboard, is fast, lightweight, looks cool etc* Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent put N/A. N/A* Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Maybe some light photo editing in the future, it would be nice to be able to play indie games like Night in the Woods, but not a necessity* If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?As mentioned above, playing indies at normal or low setting without my computer freezing or heating up would be a great bonus * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?I would love to have a laptop with a great keyboard. I own an Ornata Chroma for my desktop PC and LOVE how noisy it is! If you know a laptop with a keyboard that clicks noisy, please recommend it to me. I would like the laptop to be durable and have a great design to boot. Another plus would be if it came in many colors, and pastel pink to be specific (no bulli pls)* Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As you can see, I am not really looking for a laptop that can play graphic intense games, but I want it to run smooth when browsing internet, writing, and maybe playing indie games. I want to be able to stream music while writing or browsing the internet. Good battery is a huge plus. Looking forward to seeing your advice :)

UK | Uni student looking for 2-in-1 laptop

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:50 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 600-800 GBP, UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 is must and can compromise on battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light weight is preferred.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 is best spot, though fine with 13 and 15 too.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Might play COD and other similar level games, but that is once or twice in a year. So not that important.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I used my last laptop (Sony Vaio) for about 8 years, so looking to use new one also for long time, so reliable build quality. Good keyboard. Obviously touch screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I read many 2-in-1 laptops had heating or build quality issues. I am looking to use this new laptop for minimum 4-5 years without needing much maintainance.

    Laptop for college (computer science)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 08:06 AM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

-1100€, Portugal. I will only buy a laptop if it is available for me to purchase/pick it up physically in one of these four shops (they do cover most laptops on the market, except Clevos and stuff): - A , B , C or D . They are in order of preference, incase you want to browse through them to check specs/prices/curiosity.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

-I don't really wan't a 2 in 1, I do however want good battery life and good specs.-

**How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

-Very important since I will be carrying it around (college), so it has to be under 2kg for sure. As for thinness, I do prefer a thin, good looking laptop but if that means losing performance then nevermind it-

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

-I want windows. If the laptop comes with linux I'll just buy windows from a cheap site-

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    -Around 15''6 only-

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

-Mostly average working stuff/videos/web, ocasional light gaming such as league of legends/wow/hearthstone/csgo and possibly some sony vegas/adobe-

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

-All of the above except touch-screen, fingerprint reader and optical drive (those are not necessary). I do however really want a good keyboard since I will be typing A LOT!!-

    **NOTES*\*

-A good wi-fi connection is crucial for me. An RJ45 port might help sometimes but I do not value it too much. My favorite brand is ASUS, but don't let that influence your suggestion.

I already have a gaming desktop, so I don't need a heavy gaming laptop.

    $500 & Portable Programming Workhorse

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:59 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately important, but totally unnecessary if within budget and specs are good

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 7/10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12.0 - 15.6 in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Chrome, Atmel Studio 7.0 & other programming, FL Studio, MATLAB, AutoCAD (maybe), Photoshop (maybe), & (maybe) light video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard would be ideal, non-janky touchpad and keyboard, & better than 1366x768 screen (hopefully)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Probably looking at either i5-8250 or Ryzen 5 builds with 8 GB RAM (expandable). I'm 100% okay with installing RAM or SSDs to improve the performance of the laptops. Perhaps a refurbished workstation might work? I'm a little wary of refurbished products.

    <$1700US for Gaming and College

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 05:27 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Need to keep it under $1700US, preferably less than that.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications basically

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not particularly.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A lot of different titles, but I'd say the big ones would be GTA 5, Battlefield 1 & 5, SWBF2, TW games, although something that could run processor-heavy Paradox titles (HOI4, Stellaris, etc) well would be nice too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Generally I'd like to max everything if I can. Of course if the model has a 120 hz display then it would be nice to actually get that in say Overwatch (I don't expect to be able to pull that off at a reasonable price-point in something more intensive).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely want a back-lighted keyboard and good speakers, and I'd really like to have separate boot and storage drives. Also decent build quality is definitely a must, I don't want to be spending over $1000 on something that will just break. A metal body would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been looking at models like the MSI GP73 Leopard-014. I've had good experiences with MSI in regards their motherboards and graphics cards, do they tend to make good laptops too? Also, I am reluctant to get something that beats out my existing PC's performance, (Ryzen 1700, MSI GTX 1760 6GB, 16GB 3200 RAM) but matching it though would make some sense though as I plan to retrofit in 2020 anyway.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

    Laptop purely for game streaming

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:05 PM PDT

I am looking for a laptop, under $500 that will be used purely for streaming games using SteamOS. It does not need to have a large hard drive, great battery life, or good speakers, as I will not be installing much on it, it will be plugged in most of the time, and I will be using headphones. Primary concerns are a good resolution and nice looking screen (colors, etc), fast streaming (good wifi card), and the best video card possible. As far as I know, the GPU is more important to streaming games than the CPU. It does not need to have windows installed, as I am just going to load SteamOS and probably Linux Mint. I'm open to buying something used. Thank you for any advice.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs, video card, wifi streaming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not very

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, SteamOS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 11" or greater

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. wireless game streaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60 fps over wifi stream.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? no

Need a solid video editing/photo editing laptop!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 02:38 PM PDT

I do a lot of creative content marketing involving video/photo and have been looking for a laptop to keep up with my needs for the past 2 weeks or so. I've been a little picky on the specs/design of the laptop and was hoping for some suggestions.

I do a lot of heavy editing within Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator so I need something capable of handling these (overheating is an issue I worry about a lot).

Would appreciate any suggestions you guys might have, and I can definitely throw some cash to whoever shows me the laptop I end up purchasing.

My budget is around $1500-$2000 but I can push $2250 if it's really really worth it. 4k screens aren't my biggest priority as I was contemplating buying an external 4k monitor to plug into. Hoping for something clean looking as well..nothing bulky.

Main priorities are an i7, GTX 1060, 16-32gb Ram, and an SSD (Hard drive isn't necessary I have a lot of externals) but if a downgrade on any of these won't affect workflow then I'm open. I'm also curious of macbooks for my work but I know for the same specs they will generally run a lot more expensive.

Thank you guys! Really depending on the tech gurus of this subreddit at this point lol.

Also here are some of the laptops I've considered:

This ASUS seems like a good deal to me and has the specs I am looking for, just without a 1060.

Also this refurbished XPS but only has an i7-7700HQ:

XPS's also seem to have a lot of manufacturing issues so I'm skeptical on that..
