Laptop for general use and casual gaming (400$-500$)

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 02:46 AM PDT

Hello guys, I am starting university soon and I need new laptop for general use and some casual gaming.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Bulgaria and around 400$-500$
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer best specifications for the money and good battery would be great
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It's not that important for me
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Overwatch,Heroes of the Storm and Visual Studio
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I am interested in games like Overwatch,Heroes of the Storm, WoW. From 30-60 fps is fine to me.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Acer Aspire E15 is not offered in my country and I've heard that Lenovo IdeaPad 320 has lagging issues so i should probably avoid it.

Laptop for general use (student stuff, music holding, porn viewing) around $400ish

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

400 maaay go a bit higher, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Don't give much shit, and battery life doesn't matter either just looking to put money in performance only

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Don't care at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Mostly familiar with Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

A bit big, like 15" but not a breaking factor

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The most gaming I'll be doing is GTA San Andreas, some programs I use are mp3 tag editing for iTunes

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

SAN ANDREAS DOG, and actually Simpson's hit and run, aaand tony hawks pro skater

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Nah just run good for years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want an easy on the wallet laptop to run good for many many years, current one from 2013 has crapped out. I hold around 70gb of music since I am really into music so I want a computer that can hold a lot of music, also just use my laptop for general stuff, document typing porn viewing YouTube bullshitting. In the future I may use it for light music recording but that is a minimal factor in buying a laptop

Looking for a powerful windows-based tablet, or flexible/removable keyboard with touchscreen, with an Nvidia GPU, for digital painting and 3D design/animation. Nevada, USA, budget of $700-1000

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 11:58 PM PDT

Currently looking to see what's better than the ASUS UX31 with the 620m, or the Lenovo Flex 5 with the i7 8th gen and 940mx. I wanna go for the lower end of my budget but if the best deals are around 1000 or slightly more I'll save up and go for it.

I basically want to be able to get the most power that I can get without going over 1000 if I can, while being able to hold and use it like a tablet, without being too bulky, and of course has a powerful and/or efficient battery.

I don't have much time to search all over the different online stores, but I am an Amazon Prime Student member, I am enrolled in school and have an active student email, if that helps me get special offers.

I'm saving things to my wishlist off Amazon for later comparisons, but if anyone sees something better I can get, that would be great.

I'm hoping that the least I can do, is be able to work on moderately detailed 2D games in Unity or Unreal or maybe Godot Engine, maybe simple 3D games, and do photoshop digital art with as many layers as I can.

I prefer processing/GPU power over storage, I can manage external storage when needed.

    Thank you!

Lightweight windows laptop with a wide screen to run a few programs <$400. Don't care about other features

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 07:44 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

So I'm looking for something thats really light weight but also has a wide screen. I know most large screens are bulky which I don't want.

I'll be running Solidworks and Matlab on it, I really don't care about the memory or any other specs. Just light weight and wide screen is what I'm looking for. Looking for 400 or less but feel free to suggest all priced options.

    Thank you for reading everyone!

What is the difference between acer e15 and acer e5

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 08:35 PM PDT

So all I'm looking for is some light gaming (Sims 4 mostly lol) and have plenty of storage space for my music collection. This is Acer e5 is currently on sale at https://www.target.com/p/acer-aspire-e5-575t-3678-notebook-obsidian-black-e5-575t-3678/-/A-52152037 and it seems to have everything I want except could really care less about the 2 in 1touch screen. My last laptop lasted me 5 years a Dell Inspiron n5050 so I don't think I demand too much from a laptop but I wanted to know the difference before I buy anything.

Decent 13"/14" laptop for intense programming and budget < 600.00 USD

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 12:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <= $600.00 , US of America

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No, best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not as bulky as Acer E-15 oldschool type. I used to own a Dell 1558 Studio laptop. I prefer laptops that are equivalent to Thinkpad T480 type.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3" to 14" (not 15.5" or higher)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • Python programming
      • Thesis writing
      • extensive browsing
      • extensive reference material browsing (PDF of textbooks, journals, etc.)
      • Technical documentation writing (LaTeX documentation)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • good keyboard with backlight (if avaiable but not necessary)
      • good build quality for the given price of <$600.00
      • decent battery life to be used on long flights (>6 hrs)
      • Good thermal dissipation performance (should not blow up if I push it too hard :D )
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Was thinking of Lenovo 330s. Provides decent specs for the given price, however I am no expert on their quality and reliability. So I believe this sub will help me put my mind at rest by suggesting a laptop/notebook that I can rely on.

12-14 inch laptop for coding, unity3D <700 USD

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I want to spend less than $700, US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life is most important I don't want to have to find a place with a plug to work.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, i have a pretty small bag

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-14

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Visual Studio, Unity3D, VirtualBox (Kali/CTF)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality, touch-screen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been using a Surface Pro 2 i5 4gb 128gb for 2 years, its battery life was mediocre now its just dependent on the wall. However, I do appreciate its portability and durability. It also oddly performed really well with VM's for some reason. By nature of having a desktop at home, this PC is just a means to work away from home for school, hackathons, and capture the flags. I watch a lot videos on Udemy/youtube as well.

What is the better choice from the two?

Help with specs for my needs for a new laptop

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 12:22 AM PDT

I'm going to be getting a new laptop and have been doing research for the past 4 hours or so reading about RAM, processors, etc.

I currently have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro and want an upgrade. I do game a bit so that's important to me however I don't play heavy games such as GTA, Skyrim, etc. the laptop will really be for everyday use along with gaming as my primary use. I'm a college student fixing to graduate.

I was told to go after i7 with 16GB of ram.

However, I was reading i5 is very similar to i7 in terms of performance with gaming and really where the i7 comes in handy with is for streaming games (twitch), modding, coding, video editing, etc. of which I do none of that type of stuff. I also understand that as far as RAM goes 16gb is much better than 8gb but I was reading a lot of people are fine with 8gb.

Can someone point me in the right direction as far as laptops go?

I've been looking at Dell because my girlfriends dad works there and gets a 20% discount so that's something to think about. I'd like to spend around $700-$800, but can go up a little more if the laptop is worth it.

Currently the laptop I'm really intrigued in is $950 on dells site (so about $800 with discount) with i7, 16 GB, etc. but then I also see a similar laptop for about $750 that's i5, 8GB.

Is there anything else I should really be looking at in terms of performance asides from RAM and processor? Any suggestions to where I should look and any info is welcomed! I'm really trying to learn this foreign language that is computers. Haha

    Searching for a 2-in-1 under $700USD

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 04:22 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$600-$700, not much higher but lower is best. United States

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

2-in-1 is preferable, good battery life isn't a must but I would like it.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not very important, just not ridiculously heavy or thick

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows as Mac OS is too expensive

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    Under 15in or 16in

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I may do some digital art and i will definitely do light gaming. For art, I'm open to options but I will likely use Clip Studio Paint EX

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

The Sims 4 and ROBLOX are the main goals. I don't care about settings in ROBLOX. For TS4, I don't like the lowest of the low; medium or low medium is good for me.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Nothing specific, although I would love a nice keyboard and touchpad

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

It would be good if I can find it at a local store, but online is okay too. I like to have a good looking laptop, no big bezels and no ridiculous thickness if possible.

Australia - Laptop for Uni (compsci) $1-2k

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, $1000-2000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery > Specs > 2-in-1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is a bit important. =<2kg if possible. Might be able to stretch to 2.5kg.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Some flavour of Linux, Might dualboot with Win10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14" is good because weight. Fully open to 15.6" suggestions too.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe a bit of light gaming but nothing heavy. Possibly very basic video/photo editing but if I need to do anything heavy I'll do it at home.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO, 60fps/Medium. Everything else will run on a toaster or I'll just play on my desktop like a sane person.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard is probably the most important and then build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Been eyeing up Lenovo but their deals got worse so now I'm trying to look elsewhere as well.

Portability + Video Editing (occasional) for < $1500 USD (not strict budget) - currently on 2015 MBA 13"

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 06:54 PM PDT

    What are you coming from?

    Currently I have a early 2015 Macbook Air 13". Ontel HD Graphics 6000 1.5GB, with 4GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and i5 1.6Ghz. 120GB model.

Why do you want to upgrade?

Main reason is for better power for video editing in Final Cut Pro X (currently takes way too long to render, and you can hear the machine really working over time!). But also still want to maintain portability (size, weight, slimness). Leaning towards Mac because I can use FCP and I find it easy to use for just browsing (which is the only other thing I do if I'm not editing). P.S. I only edit once a year so it doesn't need to be super super duper powerful.

Total budget and country of purchase:

Unlimited but preferably < $1,500 USD. Buying in Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

2-in-1 is a bonus, but not if it can't stand up by itself (I lie in bed a lot with laptop on my legs). Coming from a 2015 MBA 13" so anything with equivalent or better battery life should be good enough for me.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Yes, important. Looking for a light-weight one (similar to 2015 MBA 13" is fine)

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Prefer Mac for Final Cut Pro X. But also use Windows normally so wouldn't mind that if the machine is much better.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

Around 13" is preferred. 15" is probably too big for travelling for me.

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

Only strenuous thing I'm doing is video editing. Currently using MBA for Final Cut Pro X where it takes super long to render small clips. I use transitions and colour effects so this slows it down. This is pretty much the main reason I'm looking for a new laptop - to add a bit more grunt to what I have currently. P.S. Currently I have an Intel HD Graphics 6000 1.5GB, with 4GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and i5 1.6Ghz - and it actually does the job alright for me, albeit a bit slower. So I'd like it to be much better than this, but doesn't have to blow it out of the water! Because portability & price are still factors for me.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)

Touch screen would be a huge plus! (but then means I can't go Mac route). Fast memory card reader for transferring photos would be a small bonus but otherwise I'd just use an adapter. Would prefer some sort of USB C charging over other ways (because I use a Pixel) but I don't overly care too much about this. Touchbar for Mac would potentially be good for video editing (?) but pretty sure this would never be 'value for money' in my eyes.

Acer Nitro 5 okay for casual use + suggestions around the same price range (~$1300 CAD/$1000 USD)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 04:10 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada: $1300 CAD or $1000 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money and long periods of use 4-5+ hour sessions

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is not important at all.

No editing. Some light gaming: FFXIV, Bamco JRPGS

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium is fine but 60 fps is preferable

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking into getting a laptop around the ~1300 CAD ($1000 USD) price range and have been eyeballing the Acer Nitro 5. I've read up on it and it from user reviews the biggest problems that stick out are trying to add a hard drive into a hard drive voids your warranty and most importantly heating issues.

If I use the laptop mainly for casual use such as just netflix/youtube/web browsing with some light gaming (No triple A stuff on Ultra or anything like that but more like FFXIV and other less demanding jrpg titles) will the heating issues be a dealbreaker for this laptop?

I see people saying that it's ok in short bursts of 1-2 hours but would it be okay longer on less intensive games?

I have a gaming pc for when I want to run the really high end stuff but having a decent laptop to enjoy while lying on the bed would be nice.

This is the laptop in question: https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-AN515-51-76YG-Laptop-i7-7700HQ-Windows/dp/B071JLXH2G

Main reason for the $1300 price tag is because I was thinking of buying an ipad then realized it costs around that much to get a high end laptop that could do much more.

Also willing to pay a bit more if I can buy it off amazon or directly in a store since with prime it's easier to control the delivery date and get it on the weekends when I don't have work.

Advice on 11 to 14 inch budget secondary laptop for $300 USD or under.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 03:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300 and US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be cool, but not required. Good battery life would be great, but I understand my limitations with this price point. I would prefer a quad core device, but think I am being too picky. It'll probably end up being Celeron or Pentium, but I am okay with that for my use case.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? At this size I would hope it wouldn't be bulky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. My plan is to most likely install Linux on it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 11 inch up to 14 inches. Not entirely sure which size I particularly want in this range.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No editing. Web browsing, some basic HTML coding for class. Some media consumption like YouTube and Netflix. Word processing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is not the goal of this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Touch-screen would be awesome for the size, but understand if not possible.

    • I would really like it to have an ethernet port.

    • A not crappy keyboard would be great, but I can't see that being easy at this price.

    • New enough to have at least 1 USB 3 port would be great, but not required.

    • IPS display is a high-ish priority over TN. Anything from 1366 x 768 up to 1920 x 1080 is cool.

    • 4GB of ram minimum and if its upgradeable then that would be a huge plus.

    • 32GB of eMMC storage is too little.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've considered Chromebooks, but even the really rare ones with more than 64GB of storage don't sit well with me. A refurbished device is fine.

    Thanks!

Is the HP Omen 17t a good value?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 09:16 PM PDT

I've been looking for a desktop replacement laptop for quite some time now, and the OMEN 17t seems like a very good value, especially considering that you can apply codes to save even more money off of OMEN laptops. The config that I am looking at costs $1499 without the code applied, but with the code applied, it's $1399, and this laptop is fitted with a 1070, 8750H, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD +16GB Optane, and a 144hz 1080p G-SYNC screen. I haven't seen any better offers for a new laptop with a full 1070, what do you guys think?

I have also noticed that there are multiple listings of the 17t on HP's website, and I am wondering if there are any differences between them, and some of them, such as the two listed below seem to be incredibly similar, the only difference being price. If I spec these two listing to be the same (16GB RAM, 1070, 144hz screen, 86W battery, etc.) , then they are very similar, only difference being the second listing having a slightly cheaper final price. (with the code applied of course) Thoughts?

What's the lightest laptop with a numeric keypad?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 02:28 PM PDT

Tired of bulky, heavy and thick laptops. I deal with numbers and Microsoft Excel on Microsoft Windows 10. My job requires traveling most of the year.

    Edit: open budget

Having trouble deciding between these 2 $1,200 laptops

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 10:35 AM PDT

I found 2 $1,200 gaming laptops with GTX 1060s and 8th gen i7s. The HP one has a 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD (as opposed to the Acer's 256GB SSD and no HDD) and doesn't seem to run as hot or have as many problems (and it also looks cooler). The Acer one has a better refresh rate (144hz vs 60hz) but seems to have a lot of problems with heat, and also a shorter battery life.

I don't know a ton about PC hardware so sorry if anything i said was off. Thanks!

Advice on laptop for graduate analytics program?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 07:01 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000 or under USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. No requirement but currently have no familiarity with Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD with at least 512MB storage. Leaning towards 16GB RAM but am open to suggestions if that's overkill.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As of now I mostly use my desktop for excel and internet applications but that will certainly grow over time. I am looking for a laptop that can utilize solver and other functions quickly while not running hot.

This laptop will be on my lap 90% of the time so upward facing speakers / vents would be ideal.

Lastly, I've always been resistant to laptops because touchpad seems to have a mind of their own sometimes and frustrate me. So bonus points if the trackpad is accurate.

Looking for an MSI Laptop, thin but still has a keypad on the right side. Will be used for work MOSTLY but still want a dedicated video card.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 03:20 PM PDT

MSI just debuted the MSI P65 Creator, which I think looks great. Has the 1060-1070 Nvidia GPU, but it doesnt have the keypad.

I want something thin, portable. 15" screen. Capable of good performance. Really want to have a keypad.

Closest I can find is the G63 Stealth. The G65 Stealth THIN would be perfect, but again it loses the keypad.

    Acer Swift5? Spin5? Something else?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 02:52 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £1000ish (UK, England)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2in1 interests me, but not a requirement, battery life has to be decent, im looking for 8th gen cpus and an SSD at least for this price range

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? quite important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. qindows is what i normally use

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14'' but 15.6 or 13 is okay

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I might game while away from home, but I don't plan to run anything intensive, stardew valley kinda games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? answered above/i dont expect anything better than low/medium on decent games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen is appealing, build quality must be pretty good, I rarely like using touchpads even if they're good

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will mostly be used for my uni work and I'm looking to invest into something that will last me for my bachelors and perhaps a masters, then entertainment on the side sometimes, I've looked into them myself and I'm stuck between a spin5 and a swift5, if there was a 14 inch spin5 I'd probably have the laptop i'm looking for, there are 13 inch models but I'm not sure if the 1050 in the 15 inch models would be worth it? obviously feel free to veer off the acer path, I just like acer products a lot, any suggestions are appreciated
