Why does my 32gb flash drive tell me that a 10gb file is too big when it’s completely empty?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:25 PM PDT

I downloaded a game for my new pc yesterday at work (my WiFi sucks) and it's too big to move onto my flash drive all at once so I've been making trips from the laptop I downloaded it on and the pc that it needs to be played on. All was well just tedious except there's one 10gb file that won't go onto the 32gb flash drive because it's telling me there's not enough space.

CPU Attached By Pins to CPU Fan

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:21 PM PDT

I just received this picture from a friend building a pc after a very confusing phone call about "the cpu coming separated from the processor." They haven't given me any other information so i can't tell if they pressed hard enough to bend the pins but I know there's thermal paste on them. Is there any hope for the cpu? Any immediate action that should be taken? It's a 2600X and I noticed a comment on a video about cleaning thermal paste off the pins advising against the same method for AMD but Im not sure why. I told them to gently remove and stop working with it and it'll be about two days until I can step apply anything unless anyone knows of any guides I can send without worrying about them misinterpreting.

PC repair shop "glued" sheets of copper to the inside of my laptop. Should I remove them?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:23 AM PDT

A while ago I sent my laptop to repair for an issue with the screen. I opened it today to suddenly find (what appears to be) sheets of copper inside my laptop. Is this intentional? Is there any reason why these might be in there?

I've tried googling around a bit, but I'm not really sure what to search for. So far I've not found anything similar to this.

I've also lately been having some issues with the temperature of my laptop, and sometimes it even overheats to the point of spontaneously turning off. Could these be the cause of it? Temperature-wise it seems like a bad idea to wrap your hardware in metal. Should I just peel them off? They seem to just be held in place by some kind of adhesive.

How do I get rid of this adext0.xyz search virus on my computer?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:53 PM PDT

This virus/trojan ended up on my PC about two days ago and I have no idea how it got on there as I haven't installed anything new. I checked my installed programs and every file as of the 30th and I still can't find it in my system. It spams my Chrome browser and redirects every search I have from Google to Bing, which is absolute garbage. It says it is adext0.xyz/search right after it has redirected my search from Google and right before Bing. I've tried installing Malwarebytes, Avast Antivirus, and others and none of these programs can find and get rid of this thing. I tried using a site blocker extension, but it doesn't stop the redirecting; it just stops Bing from showing up. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome outright and it's still on there. It only seems to affect Chrome and doesn't affect my other browser, Seamonkey, at all. I really need help on getting rid of this very very annoying virus! I'd greatly appreciate any and all answers that can help me get rid of this thing! Thanks.

Some weird Russian program tries to start on boot-up and svchost.exe taking way too much CPU(40%+)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:55 PM PDT

Whenever I boot up my laptop (Win10), some program tries to start installing, I always end up cancelling it. Here are the photos:

    https://imgur.com/dsE1ma0

    https://imgur.com/6tkEuY2

    What are these things?

Also, in the task manager something called svchost.exe takes up way too much CPU resources. When I right click and 'go to services' there are no services attached to it so I end up clicking 'End task' and face no problem, but it appears again from time to time.

I ran a full scan twice, once through windows defender and the other through Avast antivirus, they caught some viruses and I removed them but these problems didn't go away.

    What should I do now?

DID MY psu fry my Mobo?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:34 AM PDT

Just finished a new build and used an older power supply. First boot it booted fine and posted. Next boot it smoked for less than a second at the RBG header. The RBG fans quit lighting up and one fan quit completely. Now right when it's plugged in it turns on and doesn't boot. Power switch also does nothing now.

ASUS Keyboard Drivers and Driver Easy

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:34 PM PDT

I recently installed a program called Driver Easy to my ASUS RoG G752 laptop to help install all the necessary ASUS drivers after replacing a broken hard drive. The app did install some missing drivers, but after the program finished running, my keyboard was completely unresponsive. Like every single key. I checked my drivers in the device manager to uninstall and reinstall the keyboard driver, but I found that there were no more keyboard drivers at all on my computer, anywhere. I know that Asus has a website for installing their drivers for free, but to avoid reinstalling every Asus driver, I would like to know what specific keyboard driver my notebook uses. Google turns up with nothing but the uninstall-reinstall tip and the Asus support page. Any help is tremendously appreciated.

2 days ago my shift keys stopped properly functioning. Sometimes they will work and than all of the sudden they won't. I have removed them and shot them with compressed air but that made no difference, I have also reinstalled the drivers multiple times and turned of sticky keys and checked for malware. I have no idea what is wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Laptop shutting down randomly and restart only if i remove & put back power plug from wall

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:25 AM PDT

    Hi reddit,

Some week ago i spilled some whine on my laptop keyboard & my battery was dead. I'm using my laptop with AC power without any battery. Since then im experiencing strange things. It's a gaming laptop : aorus x7v6/i7 6820HK/GTX1070/16 GB RAM.

Laptop is working fine, except that when i'm playing games like PUBG or NoMansSky it randomly shut down. Sometimes i can play 3 hours straight to shutdown or sometimes i just open the game and immediatly shut down. I tried to check temperatures but they were fine, my CPU/GPU are used to go to 90°C and never caused any problem. I tried to change the AC power cord adapter, but it doenst change anything. I updated all my drivers also.

BUT there is one symptom that is very strange and i dont know how to interprete it : When my laptop shutdown, i cant instantly restart it. I have to remove the AC plug from the wall and put back in.

I'm starting to think the issue coming from electricity surge im my house, is it possible ?

    Regards

Service Host: Diagnostic Policy Service eating memory

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:13 AM PDT

As the title says the Service Host: Diagnostic Policy Service is taking all my memory (16GB). It starts normal but the longer the computer is on it takes more and more memory until all the ram is used. Ending it in task manger allows the process to begin again but it is a very temporary solution.

I don't know if this is related but the computer has trouble restarting or shutting down as well. It acts like it gets hung up on trying to shut down applications but there is nothing there.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

My modem will occasionally stop working.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:42 PM PDT

Hello. I'm trying to type this on a phone, so sorry about formatting.

The problem I'm having is with Ubee DDW36C modem.

My modem is a twat and I hate it. Once every couple of weeks it seems it's will just randomly stop working. The power button flickers, then it goes solid and the DS, US, and online lights with flash on and off for a few seconds then repeat. This varies from lasting an hour or so to a day. I have spent the past few hours googling and have found nothing.

I'm very annoyed. Please help. Thanks.

ARRIS SBG6900-AC: hourly goes general failure for roughly 5-10 seconds.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 11:05 PM PDT

Original issue was not so rough, wifi randomly would disconnect but be back on a few seconds later, often remedied for a day or so after power cycling the router manually; however, as of recently, wired connections are in the mix, as well, with power cycling not aiding in the slightest.

Very possible some idiot I know, maybe myself, may have modified some configs via the web portal that created this instability in the network. I'm not sure. Router is not even two years old, yet.... so, was hoping someone may provide a potential solution.

I have not hard reset the router, as of yet. That's ideally the last step before considering a new product purchase.

Typical cmd prompt during defect consists of periodic spouts of:

Reply from 2607:f8b0:400f:805::2004: time=15ms General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. Request timed out. Destination host unreachable. Reply from 2607:f8b0:400f:805::2004: time=51ms

Is there a proven solution where we could replace the passwords with fingerprints?

Laptop fans spinning up, then computer powers down. Motherboard issue?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:44 PM PDT

I replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU of my Lenovo Y700. While screwing the heatsink back in, I dropped a screw onto the motherboard and there were sparks. The computer still booted up just fine though, so I thought everything was fine.

Then after being on for 20ish minutes, the fans spun up to max speed and the computer turned off. Turned it back on, and it took maybe 5 minutes. The next, maybe 2.

Did I fry my motherboard? Or is it possible that the CPU or GPU is overheating due to inadequate coverage by thermal paste and the computer's turning itself off for that reason?

Also - where do you get a new Y700 motherboard?

    Thanks!

Edit: I'd forgotten to disconnect the battery and drain the power from the system before doing this.

Edit 2: Tried turning it on, thinking it might be a heating issue. Got BSOD, said Windows failed to start correctly. Looked around online, and I found a post about a similar issue that says it sounds like a RAM issue. Reseated the RAM (which I didn't touch initially) and it works better now. It restarted itself just a minute ago though... Not turning off entirely though, and it took quite a while. Improvement?

Is there such thing as a "step-up converter" for my car

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:43 PM PDT

I don't think this is the right Reddit to put this in but I couldn't find a "carsupport" subreddit of any kind, if anyone knows a better place to post this please let me know.

Anyway, in September my parents and I plan to drive across Australia in a car for a 3 day trip. Being a gamer there's no way I'm going to let myself be away from a computer that long if I have a choice, my brother said you can get something called a "Step-up Converter" which converts the cars power (I'm not sure if it's 12V or 5V) to 240V which is enough to power a laptop, is this an actual thing? My brother suggested it and my dad said he'd look for it online a very long time ago but never did. I did a few quick searches online and I could only find step down converters, so is this a real thing? How much would it cost? I live in Australia, where could I get it?
