Is Linux From Scratch a masochist act or is it doable for a noob? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:35 PM PDT I just discovered LFS and though "Hey, it might be fun!" Though I just use Xubuntu on my netbook (Have it installed on my main PC, but I mainly use it as a file-safe). So my goals are: *Figure out how the damn thing works. *Figure out how to compile the damn thing. *Figure out what I want to compile in the damn thing *Compile the damn thing. *Install the damn thing on the partition I use for Xubuntu. *Try to not erase all the data stored in other partitions. *Call the damn thing a success. It seems plausible for a newby who wants to do it? Or should I just get used to compile other stuff first? TN: I am going to call my distro "The damn thing". I just think it's funny. Complete noob. Need help with seedbox! Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:10 PM PDT I have no experience with Linux and recently subscribed to a seedbox. I am simply trying to run Sonarr and Radarr continuously but they constantly stop running. From what I understand I need to add to the cron file to check to see if the programs are running and then execute if they are not. I have tried to find tutorials on the web and went back and forth with support a few times but haven't been able to figure this out. It seems like it should be a pretty easy fix but I've no idea. Help! [link] [comments] |

Opensuse going offline after some time Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:27 AM PDT Hi, I have been trying Opensuse for about two weeks on Tumbleweed / KDE desktop. I installed TeamViewer (remote desktop) to be able to control my home pc from work (I had done this on Windows). The problem is that on Linux, my home laptop gets disconnected off the home network after a period of inactivity. I changed the energy settings to not go into suspend mode when on power, and checked the box to allow all users to connect to the network. It is all good until I get to work an hour later... and my laptop is offline. I understand there could be a ton of issues, I am just trying to see if I am missing something that makes the laptop "sleep" or go offline after a period of time, other than the energy settings I have changed. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
[Mint] boot keeps filling up with kernels and install fails - how do I keep it clear? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:56 PM PDT So about every 3-5 months or so I get to a place where my boot directory is full of different/old kernel installations and installation of the newest one fails because of this. So then I have to manually go and dig out the old ones. Is there a way to tell linux to not keep like six kernels installed? [link] [comments] |
Sources.list file for 18.04 does not have the word bionic in it Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:57 PM PDT I have installed a bash shell inside Windows 10. I was using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ( xenial ) inside it. I decided to upgrade the OS to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS ( bionic ) using the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d . After the installation, when I check the OS using the command lsb_release -d , it says Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS . However, when I try to update the OS using "sudo apt update" the computer checks for links with the word xenial in it. I checked the file /etc/apt/sources.list and noticed that it does not contain the word bionic. Is there an issue with my sources.list file ? Is it necessary to edit this file? Thanks for any help! How to switch from nvidia gpu to intel integrated gpu? (Ubuntu running i3wm) Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:25 PM PDT I'm new to Linux and I've just installed Ubuntu with i3 windows manager (I love it so much), I've also installed nvidia proprietary drivers but I can't switch to the integrated intel GPU AT ALL in nvidia's settings panel. I mean it's kind of a big problem because my laptop is running hot and it's eating a lot of battery and performance... What can I do? Integrated GPU comes with my I7-6700HQ and dedicated GPU is a GTX 1060 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:07 AM PDT I just installed debian a few days ago. In trying to do things as simple as making a firefox launcher shortcut, I'm having a ton of issues. The wikis mention about either creating desktop files in .local or /usr, however I don't see a local, and I also can't save or edit anything in /usr because I don't have permission (further confusing, since I am the only admin/user and have root). Basically everything in Other Locations, I can't save anything. There is the firefox ESR that came with the distro, but I want to use firefox nightly. I installed nightly, and can only open it by going into /home/firefox and clicking the firefox file, which is cumbersome. My file system and privileges seem to be out of whack... unless I am doing things completely wrong. Any advice on what to do? [link] [comments] |
No idea what my superuser password is, what can I do? [Mint] Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:01 AM PDT Hi When i use a sudo command, I enter my usual password and everything works fine. When I use su - my usual password wont grant me access. I have no clue what this password could be, as the only password I've ever set up on this machine is my user password. [link] [comments] |

Looking to switch from Windows 7 and 10, looking for recommendations. Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:23 PM PDT I'm looking to find which version of Linux would work best for me. I play a lot of games so easy compatibility is a must. I'd like something as close to Windows 7 as possible. (Definitely not like the abomination that is Windows 10) I'm looking for something as plug and play as possible for me, and my roommates. I've heard good things about Linux Mint on this aspect, but would like more information from those that have actually made the switch. Are there any common programs that I'd need to get or that I'd need to find replacements for, such as I need to download WINE for lots of gaming stuff. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

Two part amateur question (multiple commands/opening pics in Mint) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:37 PM PDT So this is a two part question 1) what is the best way to open pictures or other files from the terminal? Currently I'm using xdg-open, and that works for static images, but if I wanted to open a webm or mp4, it follows up with stuff and I have to press Ctrl+C when I close it (last line is (xplayer:22881): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_tag_list_get_string_index: assertion 'GST_IS_TAG_LIST (list)' failed) 2) how would you use the same command for multiple things in one line? I.e. if I wanted to open 11.jpg and 12.jpg, is there a way I could do that with just ONE xdg-open? Or would I have to type xdg-open 11.jpg|xdg-open 12.jpg thank you for your help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:06 PM PDT This just started happening today, as far I can tell. I am running Fedora 28, just so everyone knows. This morning, I remember running fedora-upgrade and selecting the online option, but having it fell. I had to get to class, so I just unplugged it from the charger, hdmi cable, and left. I noticed when I got to class my laptop had booted up when waking it from sleep, and my user account wasn't listed, only a test account I had made. I had to click the "not listed" option and log in that way. EDIT: Everything looks fine in logind.conf So I can mark the rebooting instead of sleeping problem I'm having because of Systemd. Could it be a kernel bug? Running uname -a gives me this Linux icarus 4.17.6-200.fc28.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jul 11 20:29:01 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux EDIT: It keeps freezing in the middle of copying my files over to my external hard drive. EDIT: The freezing and powering off seems to have been a problem with the newest kernel Linux icarus 4.17.3-200.fc28.x86_64 doesn't have that issue. [link] [comments] |
Disk full, but du -sh doesn't show where (debian) Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:01 PM PDT *** Now resolved, see comment **\* My machine is showing sdd (mounted as /) as 100% full, 32GB, but when I use du -sh, I only see about 9-10GB accounted for in all the directories in root. Largest reported directory is /var/lib/plexmediaserver at ~7GB, and /home at 1.3GB, everything else totals about 300MB, so i'm stumped as to why the disk is full. How can I troubleshoot this further? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:58 PM PDT I bought a project laptop for learning my way around Linux and programming, how should I set the laptop up? I was thinking making a virtual machine that does ubuntu and one that does Kali, how much space should I dedicate for each on the virtual machine (I have 400g available space) should I not do virtual machines and do something different? What is some cool stuff I can do with Ubuntu so I can learn quickly? [link] [comments] |
