    Torn Between Two Laptops

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I need a 13-14" laptop that I will use to run programs like Python, Eclipse and SolidWords. After examining a bunch of HP, Dell, Asus and Lenovo laptops I came across two that have the exact same specs as detailed below. One is a Lenovo 720S and the other is an Asus UX331UN:

    i7 8550U

    16GB RAM

    512gb SSD

    GeForce MX150

Both are similarly priced and I don't know which brand I should go for. I was hoping to get suggestions from people that have experience. How do these two models compare? should I go for the Lenovo or Asus?

New laptop purchase for work and gaming.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:59 AM PDT

    Hey reddit users,

    I am looking at purchasing a new laptop for both work and gaming purposes. I would like to run games at 60 fps and be able to connect to at least 2 external monitors. Below are listed specifics;

    4k resolution

    13 " screen plus

intel 7th gen or 8th gen

    SSD 250 - 500 GB

    8-16 gb ram

    Windows 10

graphics card capable of dual external monitors

Light gaming but run high frame (fortnight, pubg, COD)

    Price 1200 - 2200.

If anyone could recommended some options that would be great, I am leaning towards dell XPS 15 but want to hear everyones thoughts.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:11 PM PDT

I have heard that the Lenovo Yoga 920 has slow wifi connection. Is this true on all types or just on the 4k version? Are there any ways to fix it?

my laptop's cooling unit doesn't seem to be working Efficiently enough

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:52 PM PDT

I play TF2 on a refurbished gaming laptop, and it runs fine, but my laptop is constantly humming while it plays the game, and for about five minutes afterwards. I'm not an expert in this kind of thing, but from my armchair laptologist position, I think it's a problem with the cooling unit. Is there some sort of external piece of hardware I can attach to my PC in order to get rid of the humming? If not, any other tips you guys have would be appreciated.

How would I upgrade to 8gb and upgrade to an SSD?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:17 PM PDT

I'm going to be purchasing this laptop because it's in my price range and a comment mentioned that I should upgrade to an 8gb stick and upgrade to an SSD. How would I go about doing that and could you show me the parts I would need?

Oven Temperature, The Matebook X Pro!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:08 AM PDT

Oven Temperature, The Matebook X Pro!

I have the Matebook X Pro for over two months now and I can't get over how much hot this machine can get! Surface temperature reached up to 51 degree Celsius!! that's an oven temperature

I tried to test the surface temperature of the laptop as objectively as I can with a laser thermometer, Here is the results:

    • Under light load, off the charger: Surface temperature reach up to 37 degree in the hot spots( Around the power button, above the brightness keys, and around H and Y keys). The area where you rest your hands were fine of temperature of 30-31 degree
    • Under light load connected to the charger: Surface temperature reach up to 40 degree especially around the H and Y keys.
    • Under heavy load playing fortnight: Surface temperature reach up to 51 degree! you can't play on this machine with the keyboard, it's so uncomfortable.
    • Package temperature (Intel XTU) under light load averaging around 45 degree. Under heavy load averaging 75 degree and reaching a maximum of 91 degree!
    • Also I tried testing the temperature while undervaluing the CPU and GPU by -0.095V. There was no significant difference in temperature.

Now I have no idea what to do with this machine. Are all laptops that this thin gets hot like this?

I can't return it because there is no returning policy in my country. I can send it to warranty to try to fix the thermals but I don't think they gonna do something about and I really need the laptop for work.

    Any suggestions? ideas? comments?

    Thanks

    Looking for a new laptop

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 11:50 AM PDT

I am a college student and have had a Macbook air for the past 2 years and really hate it. First off most of the work that I do at school is on some sort of microsoft platform so transferring it can be a pain plus I use mostly google docs and gmail and don't think that I am taking as much advantage of that as I think that I can. For that reason I really want to buy a chromebook, but I need to know which one is my best option. I want to stay under $500 and it needs to have good battery life. I would also prefer that it be pretty durable.

Looking for a good engineering laptop! Help please!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:12 AM PDT

I am searching for a laptop that has the abilities to run software such as CAD, Civil3D and Revit. Does anyone have experience with this software?. I'm looking to spend around $1000, too much higher than that is most likely a deal breaker. Somewhere around 15 inches, 13 is too small and 17 will probably be too large. i7 is probably my best bet? 16 GB ram? 256 SSD (also having an HDD is great but not a deal breaker) On top of the engineering software I would love to be able to play fortnite with my xbox friends (since Sony won't allow cross play) I've looked at a predator, dell and msi but I can't seem to narrow it down. Most of what I'm seeing is usually a 1050 or a 1050Ti, is that good enough for the rendering I need it to do? Any other help is greatly appreciated!

7th gen i7 versus 8th gen i5. Is it worth the price/wait for the upgrade?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:28 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I really like the Surface Laptop. The only thing I'm iffy about is that it hasn't been upgraded to 8th gen processors and likely won't until after the semester starts. This laptop will be mostly used for typical college tasks (Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Chrome, Word, etc) and occasionally some light gaming and light programming (probably with databases). Is the i5 (8th gen) performance worth the wait, possible price increase, throttling issues, over an i7 (7th gen)?

Buying laptop for general gaming usage

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:26 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    USA, $1500 (flexible)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best specs for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not at all

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Sony Vegas 14, OBS

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Monster hunter world @ 1080p 60fps high settings

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Full keyboard with numpad, at least 1.5 TB of combined SSD and HDD space

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I've been considering the [GE72MVR](https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154945&ignorebbr=1) by MSI, but was wondering if there was one at 60Hz for a bit cheaper

Thinkpad Carbon X1 or Matebook x pro

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:12 AM PDT

I'm looking to invest in a new laptop, my current laptop has a 2014 i5 and 6gb of ram, not sire of the exact specs and the stickers have fallen off, which is frustratingly slow at times. As much as is possible I would like to 'futureproof' this new device as I will likely have it for a good few years. The thinkpad warrenty seems like a great deal should anything go wrong and I can configure it for touch, which is something I would love to keep as I use it quite often, although I don't need it for drawing so a pen isn't crucial. I would be going for 16gb ram, i7-8550U, 1tb drive. For the matebook I would be going for the i7, I like the portability of the slim build and productivity options of the tall screen. The full size usb is somethig I need and use a lot so any options have to have this. I was originally also looking at the blade stealth but with razers customer service reviews have put me off. I'm still not sure if it is worth it, although I realise you are mich more likely to hear a bad review than a good one. I would be buying the matebook through microsoft so customer service isn't a massive worry to me.
Is there anyone who has tried both, what were your thoughts? Are there any other laptops that I should consider over these two? Ideally 16gb ram, 8th gen i7 processor, touchscreen , 1tb and at least one full usb and usb c. Budget wise I'm willing to spend around £2000 if it will get me a good laptop that lasts a good few years, I am still a student so I can benifit from student deals that takes the decked out lenovo to just under 2100. I'm not a fan of the apple ecosystem and I really love and use my touchscreen and usb ports so MacBook are out and it would take a lot to go for a surface.

Is this a good laptop for the asking price?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:07 AM PDT

    https://www.amazon.com/UX550VE-DB71T-15-6-inch-i7-7700HQ-Fingerprint-Ultrabook/dp/B07532Y2LL

I'll be using it for gaming, photoshop, and maybe some light video editing. I currently have this:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015QZVA6G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I wanted to something thinner, a bit more powerful, with a better battery life. Also, I noticed that a full TB is only like $20 more...or am I missing something?

What made you take the plunge and buy the laptop you use today

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 10:00 PM PDT

It's a complicated world when it comes to laptops right now. You got your mainstream, entry level brands. You got off-brand high risk, high reward laptops. Laptops that compromise on hardware for portability. Laptops that compromise portability for hardware. You got brands going after niche crowds. New technology supplanting old. Console generations setting the standards for the games you want to play. It's nuts. I got the cheapest laptop three years ago that could play World of Warcraft and run Matlab. How'd you make the decision to drop a grand?

    Dual monitor setup problems

I have my laptop (Windows 10) hooked up to two external monitors but every time I want to switch it on or wake up the screen (I leave it locked not shut down) I have to open it and press the power button. Is there any way I can avoid this? Thanks.

Any suggestions on which of these laptops to get?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:36 AM PDT

I'm looking at the Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 14, but I'm a little concerned about reviews complaining about the fan noise. It is also a little cheaper and heavier than my other options. There other options are the Asus Zenbook UX430UN and the Samsung NP900X5T. Does anyone have any experience with these or any suggestions?
