    Simple Questions - July 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Here's a 600$ Ryzen PC that will run any popular Game at medium-high settings.

Figured it was time to show you guys that you dont really have to spend that much to have fun in modern Titles at 1080p 60FPS.

Another 600$ Build with an 4 core i3 and no SSD BUT a RX580 8GB

(You can strech for a RX580 under 600$ , but i wouldn't suggest going for a 4core 4thread machine these days, this PC isn't as Upgradeable as my initial list, but it will play new games at higher settings a little more confidently)

If you want to spend more than 600$

(This is in context to the Ryzen 1600 build)

You can look at Upgrading the build with a RX580 8GB (Cheaper than a GTX1060 6GB and mostly on par, and supports Freesync, rather than Paying G-sync Tax, which you probably wont if you're in the market for a GTX1060 tier Card)

Further than that, you can Upgrade towards 16GB RAM or/and a i5 8400 (Which has less Multithread performance, but slightly better Gaming performance - 5-15FPS more in Intel optimized Titles)

(B360 Motherboard and Stock Cooler of course)

If you want to spend less and you are willing to buy used.

then there's the Popular Option to get a Dell Optiplex with a newer than 2nd gen Intel CPU (i5 or i7) and hope it has a decent PSU to support a GPU that you buy and put into it, it comes with risks though.

    My recommendation is to buy a i5 2500k or i7 2600k

(which often Overclock to 4.7-5.0 GHZ and thus have great single core performance if you wanna play at 60FPS)

on Ebay with 8-16GB RAM and a Z-Series Mobo ("Z" allows for Overclocking) for around 150$-250$. Then you can look at getting the Rest (PSU, GPU, Storage, Case, CPU Cooling) which could put you under 400$ if you're careful and patient.

(Which would still be faster than even a Ryzen 2400G APU Build, albeit hotter and not as Upgradeable)

    GPU

These used GPU's have good Price/performance around a 1050ti if you wanna look around on Ebay or your Local Fleamarket Website.

    GTX 980 4GB (much faster than 1050ti)

    GTX 970 3.5 GB (Faster than 1050ti)

    GTX 960 4GB

    GTX 780ti 6GB (Faster than 1050ti) 1

    GTX 780 4GB

    GTX 770 4GB

    GTX 680 4GB (195 W TDP) 1

    R9 380X 4GB (Almost 300W TDP) 1

    R9 280X 4GB (Almost 300W TDP) 1

R9 290/390 4GB (Much Faster, but maybe you can find a good sale)

    (1) Get a bigger Case for these Hotter GPUs, maybe new Thermal Paste too.

    Fed up with rebate BS

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 11:13 AM PDT

Let me make this clear, I keep good records and get most of them but for fuck sake why do I constantly have to keep on their ass to get it done? Not one has ever arrived within the 'up to' mailing deadline and every desk monkey at these rebate firms are masters at kicking the can and excuse making.

No one is immune. Right now I'm on AMD's ass along with ASRock. Going to buy because of the MIR? Think again unless you're willing to put up with the aggravation. Yeah yeah this is old news but you would think it would be getting better. Nope.

I will be building my first pc soon and I have no idea what to look for in a case. Has anyone got any tips on how to find a case or a (atx mid-tower) case they would recommend (preferably one that is easy to build in) within a budget of $150 and below.

Looking to make sure this build has everything a first time builder would need and will be relatively straightforward to assemble (no missing SATA cables or extra coolers to be purchased). He is looking for a quality build for not more than $600ish (only splurge being the case, he does care about the aesthetics there and he really liked that case.) Any ways to improve this build quality wise or any savings to be had on any parts? He is only 17 so he will be saving up until November to purchase

Good motherboard/CPU combo for Linux server build?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking to put together a Linux box to use as a Minecraft server / media dump / general project machine. As such I care less about the GPU and more about Linux drivers and how much RAM and hard drive space I can stuff in. Anyone have any suggestions for a solid mobo/CPU to start with?

EDIT: I'm in the USA. I don't really have a budget, but I don't need bleeding edge.

Nvidia and AMD GPU Userbenchmark comparison spreadsheet.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 06:30 AM PDT

    TL;DR at the bottom

    Hi all,

You've probably seen my spreadsheet spam already. But...

Inspired by a post I saw on this sub a few weeks ago I made my own spreadsheet to compare Nvidia GPUs across the generations.

I worked on that a little bit more, and added all GPUs from the 750 to the latest Titan

Finally, I've just finished a little sheet that includes some AMD cards for reference. It is a bit difficult to read, but basically where the cards respective row and column meet, that is the difference in their UserBenchmark scores. Negative (Red) cells mean that the AMD card is more powerful, while positive (Green) cells mean that the Nvidia card is more powerful. Differences closer to 0 are white.

Each card's individual score is also included, for easier comparison.

    Explanation of scores:

Scores are based off of each GPU's effective speed index taken from GPU.UserBenchMark.com. Please note that the % change does not mean that the GPU is x% better, it means that the Benchmark score was that percent higher. I know, it's not a perfect way to judge and compare performance, but (for me at least) its a nice way to easily compare across generations, and get a general idea of performance.

I must say that I am not familiar with AMD cards at all, and its quite likely that I've messed up the grouping or ignored some important or common cards. If so, please let me know ASAP, and I will fix it.

    TL;DR Here are some pictures:

Need help cutting costs on Canadian budget build

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:28 PM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I'm looking to play games on a budget build. If possible, I would like to cut costs. Specifically I would like to play Tera, League, The Forest, Skyrim, and BF4. Are there any parts here that I can cut costs? I'm most likely going to use the stock Intel cooler.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

60fps and 60Hz. Low or medium settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? In Canadian dollar... Ballpark: $500 Bottom line: $600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). [Consider formatting your parts list.]

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm most likely going to run this set-up for the next 2-3 years and will upgrade heavily once I get the chance. I'm not looking for an upgrade able PC, but rather static one at the moment.

Thank you for the time for looking at my build. I appreciate any suggestions or feedback! Thanks :)

What is the best CPU/MOBO for DDR3 RAM right now?

Finished my pc parts list, looking for feedback

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:09 PM PDT

I'm building this to have a powerful pc that is futureproof, mostly for gaming, rarely for 3d and video editing

    Budget: 750 euros max

    Location: Romania

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 Coffe Lake, Hexa Core, 3.60GHz, 12MB, Socket 1151, BOX

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 TI Cerberus Advanced Edition 8GB DDR5 256-bit (planning to buy this gpu next year, untill than gonna use my 1050 ti 4gb asus strix OC)

RAM: HyperX FURY Red 1x8GB DDR4, 2666Mhz, CL16 (planning to upgrade to 2x8gb later)

    Motherboard: Gigabyte B360M HD3, Socket 1151

Storage: HDD Seagate BarraCuda 1TB, 7200rpm, 64MB cache, SATA III (planning to get a second 1tb drive later) SSD WD Green, 120GB, SATA III, 2.5

PSU: Corsair VS Series CP-9020098-EU, 650 W, PFC Activ, ATX 2.31, 12 cm fan, Black (only want this if you find my old PSU too weak: Sirtec - High Power Element BRONZE 500W which i used for many years now in diferent systems and never failed)

So what i would like to know, are these parts compatible with each other? and do i need to change my 500w psu for this system or can i keep the old psu and get a 2tb hdd instead?

i usually have around 5-6 usb devices connected (lit keyboard, lit mouse, lit headset, camera, microphone, usb drive) along a 2.1 audio system and a headset in the same jack, display is a 32 inch philips tv 1080p cause i broke my screen and honestly dont want to change this tv xD also have a second monitor connected sometimes in 720p so is 500w enough or do i need that 650 psu? (selected 650 cause it was the cheapest option from the 500-800 range altho there's a 750w that's cheaper, but that might be an overkill)

thanks to prices in romania, this build fits exactly into my budget

    AODDriver2.sys Error

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:30 PM PDT

I just built my first computer yesterday and am having trouble getting it to launch to Windows.

Everytime I try to launch it, it gives me the BSOD with the stop code: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED with the failed file being AODDriver2.sys.

I've looked up how to fix this but everywhere says to delete AMD Overdrive, but the thing is, I never installed that program so I can't uninstall it.

Any help with this error would be very appreciated.

(My last processor was AMD and I switched out to Intel for this build if that helps.)

    Fans for Meshify C?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:01 PM PDT

    Hey,

i built a pc in a meshify C case recently and i love it. And now i want to add some fans into it. I was thinking of buying same fan my case has (Dynamic X2 GP-12 ) and putting it on the front panel, but the thing is, it costs around 16+ euros in my city and i dont want to pay ~9 euros just to get it for 12€ on mindfactory. So for the same price (16 euro) i could get a Corsair Air Series SP120 which has insanely more rpm and pressure and place it on the exhaust while 2 stock coolers will intake at the front panel. (Not sure how loud it will get) My other thoghts were be quiet! Silent wings 2, i can get for 9 euros, or silent wings 3 for 16.

Just built a pc and having WiFi issues

So I just built a pc and I have a WiFi card plugged into it but it's getting awful speeds, drivers are up to date and I'm using the antenna that came with it to boost it. I'm getting 1mbps down but on my PlayStation it's 35mbps down. Anyone know what's up? Also can't run Ethernet

Need CPU upgrading advice! I'm currently using a 5 year old i5-3570k, I was looking into buying an i5 8600 or i5 8600k. Is it worth the upgrade? Is my motherboard compatible? I'm open to suggestions, however, my budjet is tight. Thanks!
