Is tomshardware using a background crypto miner on their website?

CPU usage always goes up when using that site, even on my mobile devices

Edit: I know it happens on my iPhone and iPad via 2 methods: they both get warm when on that site, and only that site. Next, i SSHed into my iPhone and ran TOP and it shows 60-90% CPU usage (in WebKit specifically) when safari with tomshardware is pulled up and in foreground. Close that site, goes down to no usage. It's consistent solid sustained usage too. It doesn't stop till I close the page.

It's been doing this for at least a year that I'm personally familiar with. Both on ios10 and ios11 devices among people I know, it's repeatable easily on every idevice I come across, I ask to try, go to tomshardware, blam gets hot. Both jailbroken and non jailbroken phones, doesn't matter. Every single page of the site too, even homepage just directly www.tomshardware.com does it too, but literally any and every page on the site does it.

I made sure it wasn't a fluke before posting. It's not placebo. Any insight would be appreciated

I think I'm being listened to at home and in my car. How do I find out if I am?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:58 PM PDT

I recently read an old post that hit a little too close to home about a woman who thought her husband had bugged her house to spy on her. I've noticed just small details that my husband is aware of, but shouldn't be. Like he will randomly quote conversations I had with my friends while he was at work or while I was driving alone with them. It's been innocent enough so far, just a bit uncanny, and he has installed spyware on my phone before, so maybe I'm just feeling paranoid. I looked up what devices are connected to my router to see if I didnt recognize anything....but I have no freaking clue how to tell what each device is based on their MAC address. There is one extra device connected though, I can only think of 4 devices that should be connected and I have 5. I feel like if I could identify what the 5th device is then I could maybe find what hes using to spy on me or I could rule out the idea of him even listening in in the first place.

Also, any ideas on how to check my car for recording devices?

    Thanks!

EDIT: heres an image of my current connections. http://imgur.com/BzzrWc6

small business using both gmail.com and outlook.com email - want to use our domain name

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:27 AM PDT

    Background

I just switched jobs. I'm at a small but growing company now. One of my hats I now wear is IT. I'm pretty tech savy, know enough to be dangerous, and am a little rusty. At my last job, I filled in when our IT manager was out, as my other responsibilities grew, I got a little rusty on the IT side from where I was longer ago.

    My Question

Currently the company uses about 12 total email addresses and is about 50/50 split between gmail.com addresses and outlook.com addresses. We currently use MS Outlook 2016 but do NOT have an exchange server. Do we need to subscribe to either Office 365 or G Suite? I'm guessing we need one of those two things in order to create and maintain mailboxes since we do not have an exchange server. Someone I know told me to absolutely use Outlook rather than gmail. If we go with Outlook, do we just change MAPI settings in gmail for those accounts to work under outlook, or should we handle it differently?

Or can we do all this ourselves using tools such as https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx ? (I'm guessing no is the answer).

Gigabyte B250N board - HDMI output is in grescale

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 04:14 AM PDT

    G'day,

I've got a HTPC with a Gigabyte B250N and i3 7100 (using integrated graphics) connected to a Sony Bravia KDL50W700B.

It's worked fine for a few years now including last night, but tonight I flipped from TV to HDMI1 and the HTPC display is in greyscale. What the dickens is going on?

    Things I've tried:

    • Swapping HDMI cables with a known working one (still greyscale)
    • Rebooting the HTPC, rebooting the TV (still greyscale)
    • Using a different HDMI input on the TV (still greyscale)
    • Using a different device on HDMI1 (works in colour)

The HTPC HDMI output is greyscale even at the BIOS splash screen, so I don't believe it's a driver issue.

The Sony overlay OSD menus are in colour (and TV / other HDMI devices are in colour) so it's not a panel issue.

The TV shows the input as 1920x1080p 12bit HDMI - I have no idea what this means. I mean the resolution is obvious, but is 12bit "normal"?

My current thought is that the port on the motherboard is buggered in some way. I know back in the day with component output you could send brightness without colour if you had a busted pin. Not sure if that still applies for digital.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?

Old laptop still slow after many repair attempts.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Got a Latitude XT PP12S That's approximately 10 years old by now that I'm trying to pump some life into, it has been in this state for 5 years, it's just too slow. I tried everything from cleaning it, reapplying thermal paste, trying all kinds of Linux distros that are supposed to be lightweight. Sent it to multiple repair shops and what they do is just reinstall Windows 7 on the poor thing. But just no luck. Could it be that the thing has just aged?

Netgear DoS attack from local addresses?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:11 PM PDT

Checked my router logs for the first time in a... long time. Other than the typical bots probing my ports a freaking hundred times a day, nothing out of the usual... or so I thought. I checked them again today and saw a few worrying things.

I saw "Dos attack: STORM" from my two local windows computers. I googled around and half of the websites were like "yeah IP spoofing, nothing to worry about, blah blah." and the other half were "Your computers are infected, disconnect them and reinstall windows." I... really don't feel like reinstalling windows.

Now, I usually don't run virus protection continuously because I'm usually pretty good at not clicking on the awful "definitely a virus" links online, and I despise the virus protection popups. (Seriously, do you really need to remind me EVERY day to buy the pro version?) I do download AVG once every couple months or so and run a scan, and have never really found anything noteworthy. However, this is the first time I've seen these logs on my router.

So I downloaded AVG and ran a quick scan and it found... nothing. Running a longer scan now. (EDIT: AVG Deep scan found nothing at all.)

Any idea what these things are? Should I be worried about them?

EDIT: I wonder if it's related to synergy. I don't know much about network attacks, but I do know that many of them involve sending a shit ton of packets at the target in a very short period of time. Synergy (mouse sharing software) does exactly that. (And in this case, the one windows PC is the server while the other is the client.) I wonder if this could explain the problems I've been having with synergy lately. If I move the mouse a lot on a remote screen, router thinks it's a DoS attack, shuts down the port for 10 seconds or so, then restarts it.... Hmmm....

EDIT2: Malwarebytes found a few "Potentially unwanted programs." But nothing that I would put stock in. I mean... they were chrome extensions downloaded from the chrome store that I couldn't really imagine being malicious. (They're STILL on the chrome store... so I think that speaks for their authenticity.)

    Computer turns off randomly

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:40 AM PDT

So recently, my PC has been turning off randomly. Once it turns off, it won't turn on again.

Also, when I went to check if the fans were working, I got electric shock from the metallic parts of my case even after i've turned off the computer.

Is the issue related to the PSU or something else? What should I do to fix it?

No signal to hdmi followed by gpu fans spinning up.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:09 AM PDT

Okay boys I'll try structure nice and well. I'll start off saying I've tried 3 different monitors and 3 different cables. Reseating everything in my pc and reinstalling windows. Reinstalling and reverting back to older drivers. Updating drivers

The problem - Randomly my monitor display will show "no signal to hdmi" When this happens my GPU fans starting to spin up despite the fans not spinning at all before hand. The ONLY way to get video back is to hold power button down til the pc shuts off and turn it back on.

Its nothing to do with temps either. 40c when watching videos on youtube/movie sites with the fans not spinning. Fans turn on when I am gaming and the gpu never goes over 70c

Probably good to note I now have my pc case on its side so the gpu faces up. When I had my pc sitting the way it should this problem happened pretty much every hour but now it happens 1/2 times a day.

How do I fix it? What is wrong? I swear its either the MOBO or the GPU but want answers from someone who knows their **** so I don't waste money buying the wrong parts.

Blocking my phone from connecting to low-quality public wifi

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:46 AM PDT

Whenever I am near a VTA bus or a McDonald's, I am forced to connect to their low-quality wifi, which usually requires me to sign in to the service. Thus I lose internet until I drop the connection and go back to mobile data.

Is there a way to block this?

Microsoft Outlook - Forward e-mails that contain certain words with attachments to an e-mail but changing the subject line...

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:33 AM PDT

Hopefully this is the right place but I need a bit of help.

I'm trying to set up something so that essentially if I receive emails with attachments in them with the subject 'Place 1 Water Quality Data' - I need to forward this on to a database e-mail that can import data but I need to change the subject line of the e-mail to various things based on if it's for Place 1 or Place 2 etc...

I can almost do all of that with rules but can't change the subject line.

Is there a way I can set something up to essentially do:

Where e-mail received contains 'Site Name Water Quality' (or any other phrase) with attachment - Forward to 'Importdata@example.com' with Subject 'Site Name'

    ? Any help greatly appreciated.

    Laptop Question

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:33 AM PDT

    Hi r/techsupport,

I'm looking for a new gaming laptop, something that should be able to play new titles on mid settings for the next 2-3 years.

    I found this on sale for 700€ Asus FX552VE i5-7300HQ GTX 1050Ti 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD 15.6" 1080p

    Then I also found this for 975€ Acer Predator Helios 300 PH317-51 i7-7700HQ GTX 1060 1TB HDD 17" 1080p IPS

I'm not sure which to go for. Obviously the Acer seems like better value on face with a GTX 1060 and an IPS screen, but I've had really bad experiences with the company Acer and found their build quality to be terrible and not long lasting.

Currently, I am leaning towards the end Asus. What do you guys think?
