    Simple Questions - June 30, 2018

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Why am I still here even after I’ve finished my build?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 11:00 PM PDT

Something about this subreddit is so entertaining to just stick around even after I have finished my build and don't have any plans on upgrading soon.

    Great subreddit 10/10

    Surprised by Rosewill

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:00 AM PDT

A customer who runs a PC gaming arcade was throwing out some old, beat up cases. I found two that looked the same, both missing parts, and figured I might be able to get one good case out of them. Sure enough, I was able to make one good case with all the parts (I thought), cleaned all the crap and dust off, and started my build, a Plex server built from mostly free parts. It uses rails that press onto the sides of the 3.5" drives. Since I'm going to have a lot of mechanical drives, I needed a case with a lot of room, this has slots for 5, with a fan blowing though them, so it should work well. I realized I only had rails for 3 drives, and that the case was made by Rosewill, so I decided I would see if they had some for sale. Checked their site, no parts list, but they had a contact #, so I called them, not expecting much. The picked up quickly, I had no trouble understanding the rep, he even helped me figure out which case I had (Challenger), and said, "sure, we'll ship you out the parts, no charge". I would have to rig something without the rails, so I was really impressed by their support.

Went from a Phenom III X6 to this, feels like I've joined the space age.

Edit: Title was supposed to be Phenom II I'm an idiot

    Hey Reddit,

I've been building PC's on and off for friends and clients for the past 6 years, and finally decided to upgrade my own PC to match what I've been building.

Internals: CPU: i5 8600k cooled by H80i (H80i is too fat and ruins the aesthetic but it works so ¯_(ツ)_/¯) MOBO: MSI Z370 Tomahawk RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000mHz DDR4 GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW2 STORAGE: 1x Samsung 860 Evo 500gb, 1x WD Blue 500gb PSU: Corsair HX750 with sleeved extensions CASE: Fractal R4 (with window)

My GTX 970 just stopped working.. should I upgrade or wait?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:46 PM PDT

It sucks that it died before the next gen came out. Should I wait and upgrade to next gen, upgrade to current gen?

All I play right now is fortnite at 4k. I was thinking just buy a GTX 1080 and call it a day. Get the GTX 970 fixed, sell it, when the next gen comes out, sell the GTX 1080.

Should I upgrade from an i3 6100 to an i5? I'm not sure which one to get

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I built a really budget system with the help of /r/buildapc and /r/hardwarewareswap last year. It has an i3-6100 that I got for a really, really great deal, 16 GB of RAM, and a 4GB NVidia Geforce GTX 960. Overall it's been a great build for the casual gaming I've been doing and is able to play everything I want to on decent enough settings.

I've noticed recently though that on some, more CPU intensive titles, I do see noticeable slowdown (games like The Sims 4, newer AAA titles and the like). I understand that eventually I will have to upgrade the GPU as well, but I'm waiting on that a bit for prices to be more affordable in the used market. These more intensive titles are also a lot slower on my Steam Link, and iirc I've heard that a better CPU can stream more demanding titles. I have great internet and play over wired, so I'm fairly sure that isn't the issue.

I'm wondering if upgrading my i3 CPU to an i5 would better serve my use case. I'm considering an i5-6600 or 7600, and I know that the K models can be overclocked, but that isn't something I'm very interested in, as I would also have to purchase a cooler and I'm not sure how much of a benefit a system like mine would see from an overclocked CPU.

Is this a good upgrade option? I'm willing to upgrade, and the price isn't an issue, I am just wondering how much of a real performance increase I would see. Thanks!

Should I build a PC or buy a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 06:17 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I currently own a Lenovo z500 laptop which is a pretty good laptop for literally anything except for gaming, I use it for school and my personal time mostly but honestly when I try to play on it, it just annoys me how even on the lowest setting it still has the worst FPS, does it work? Yes, does it look like I'm watching a gif when I'm playing CSGO? Yes.

Anyway, my budget is around $500, if I had to build a PC to run decently, I don't need it for high tech games because I already have a console for that, just something simple yet could run (most) games. What specs do I need? Or should I just buy a gaming laptop and save myself the trouble?

Hi new to building pc and this is my first build.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:00 PM PDT

So after putting my pc together I plugged everything in and it would power on for a second then immediately power off. After searching what could be the problem I came to the conclusion that it's my CPU and the MOBO agrees as that led is on as soon as it turns on. So after checking the pins on the bottom of the CPU which none of were bent or broke I reinstalled it to no avail. Currently all components are unplugged with the only thing plugged in being the CPU and CPU 8 pin power cable and ATX power cable.

A friend who dies build computers did help me pick out these parts also.

    My build is this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Hcb4gw

    Any help would be appreciated

Posted here yesterday asking for advice, would appreciate if anyone could take a look and tell me how I'm doing.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:37 PM PDT

My build so far. It's gaming PC that i hope will last a while, and that changing components over time won't be too hard. I think this is all good, all I'm unsure of is the storage and power supply, would I be able to switch from a RM550 to a VS550, which is considerably cheaper, even though people say you shouldn't be cheap on the PSU. The price for me here in Sweden would at the time of writing this be $1685 which I'm willing to spend. I will also need to buy windows 10 and pay for someone to build it for me, as i don't dare do it myself.

Hi everybody, trying to build a 1440p machine but its my 1st build ever and idk a ton about pc part market so I figured Id come to you guys for some help. Anyway to make this a bit cheaper without using a different case, monitor, and GPU? I prefer these 3. Anything else im good with switching for a cheaper price.

Looking for a plainer-styled budget case with a USB-C port on the front I/O. Recommended suggestions?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:38 PM PDT

So recently a close friend of mine is looking to rebuild his typical office and web machine. In my search I realized that a feature I take huge advantage of now is the front USB C port on my case. As they will need a new case themselves this is something I'm having a harder time finding in many of the specs and searches.

Does anyone have any good go-to recommendations for a case hopefully under a hundred USD?

Random shutdowns; maybe due to PSU?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:35 PM PDT

I built this custom PC about 3 years ago and the only changes I've made have been adding a new SSD with the HDD. In the last 7ish or so months, I've have been having issues with random shutdowns (going straight to black, PC dies; sometime it just hangs and the sound bugs out I need to force power down). I brought it to a local PC repair shop and twice they said that so far as they could tell there was no hardware or software issues they could determine. I've been suspecting then that these issues may be related to the PSU, but I wanted to ask to see if anyone here might have some suggestions.

    Build:

    • OS: Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit (Windows 8 was originally installed and then upgraded)
    • CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core
    • Fan Cooler: Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M Micro ATX LGA1150
    • RAM: Pareema 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
    • HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM (SATA 6GB/s)
    • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB (Installed in late December 2017)
    • GPU: Asus Radeon R9 290x 4GB Direct CU II
    • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+

Outervision and CoolerMaster say I have a recommended PSU wattage of 521 and 524 respectively and NewEgg says I need 653 W.

Any advice you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Its for a friend who would use it primarily for fairly light gaming. FO4 at lower settings, etc

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p 60fps with medium graphics settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Less than $300. Willing to go over, but not by much.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    CONUS, TX area.

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). [Consider formatting your parts list.]

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The 960 listed i am going to get free for a friend in exchange for helping him upgrade his PC, so that should take care of the graphics card. I also would like to get a PC that has reasonable specs, but also has some room to upgrade later on (IE, not buying parts with a dead end upgrade path). The PC is for a close friend of mine, and she doesnt have much budget to spare, hence the relatively low budget and the current choices from scouring ebay. Any expenses past $300 will likely come out of my pocket, so i'd rather not exceed that budget unless the benefits are obviously worth it.

EDIT- Forgot to mention, i already have a 120GB SSD laying around.

    Keyboard help

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 01:24 PM PDT

So I've built a pc for a bit over a month now, and I have bought a Corsair k55 rgb as a keyboard. Problem is, I don't like the backlighting as it isn't vibrant at all. I also don't like how typing sounds on it. I play games like fortnite Battle Royale and csgo. Shall I just keep using it or get a new one? However, it's been too long and I can't return it. So what should I do?
