Which of these MSI laptops would be better?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:45 AM PDT

So theres a MSI laptop I have an eye on and its the MSI GS63VR. Now theres 2 versions, 1 has a 4k screen and double the HDD space, the other one has a 1080p screen. The weird thing however is, is that the 4K version is 100 euros cheaper then the 1080p one.... the other specs are all the same it seems. Ill link both of them since I have no idea whats going on. https://www.bol.com/nl/p/msi-gs63vr-7rf-216nl-gaming-laptop-15-6-inch/9200000073106129/?suggestionType=browse&bltgh=pU5zXKePeEmeMFnza5VEPQ.oMBn-00k0IYVGdlkHyFAEg_0.2.ProductTitle#product_specifications https://www.bol.com/nl/p/msi-gs63vr-7rf-219nl-gaming-laptop-15-6-inch/9200000073106147/?suggestionType=browse&bltgh=pU5zXKePeEmeMFnza5VEPQ.oMBn-00k0IYVGdlkHyFAEg_0.3.ProductTitle#product_specifications

Looking for Work Laptop that can play one game [USA, <$2000]

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:42 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$2000; USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be cool but not required; good battery life is not a point of focus for me, but longer the better.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important factor for me, but lighter the better.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer larger. I currently have 17', But I can go down some as needed.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not going to be doing any video editing and don't doing any serious intensive design work. I want to play one game, which is Elder Scrolls 6. This might be an impossible request, since the specs aren't released, indeed the release date isn't announced yet. My guess is the game will come out between 2020-2021. Anyone have a guess of what specs I'd need to play on minimum settings?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above. Minimum settings and minimum playable FPS. Like 45?

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpa The most important factor for me, even more important than the ES6, is long term durability. I want to have this laptop for at least 5 years if possible. I would appreciate a lot of ports. I would love a SSD of at least 500 GB if possible. Touch screen is cool but not at all necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am not going to purchase the laptop until Christmas or April this year.

Need replacement gaming machine - 17"-15", $1500 US

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 03:04 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I like 17", but 15.5" would work as well.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do a LOT of gaming, and also some Photoshop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Various things, but as applicable to this, the biggest things would be stuff like Fallout 4, graphics-mod heavy Skyrim SE, and maybe Subnautica or Conan Exiles. Ultra settings would be nice, but considering my budget, high is probably what I am going for. As far as FPS, 60 is fine, anything above isn't really that necessary, and even my old machine was generally able to achieve that on most games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I live in a house without AC, and because of our specific layout and space constraints, I use my laptop legitimately on my lap, so I need something that ideally 1) has decent cooling and 2) maybe vents through the back and not the bottom. I use a cooling board too, but even so my previous laptop would get very warm sometimes.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I tend to like ASUS, MSI, and ACER as brands. My most recent was MSI and it was pretty reliable other than the heat issue. I'm not exclusivly looking for those, but I trust them a bit more. Also, because I'm a chick and like pretty, shiny things, bonus for a fancy rainbow keyboard like my Dominator had. Completely unnecessary, but it was fun and I liked it. Thanks guys. I'm pretty out of the loop anymore with tech and just don't have time for research like I did last buy.

Is this a good laptop to run games like Skyrim or FFXV on?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:10 PM PDT

I'm trying to get a good gaming laptop that can run games like Skyrim and/or FF XV, but I also want to spend as little as possible. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BP9QG2J/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 Would this be a good choice? Clueless and trying to find a laptop. Is this suitable for me? 15" or less and around $1,200 (US)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:35 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,200ish, U.S.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 15", but pretty indifferent

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop and other drawing tools, though it's not a focus. I don't really game (other than an ancient gameboy emulator), but I do have a habit of opening a bunch of tabs while browsing online. It'll be nice if I could get a laptop that won't freeze up because of that. Also, because of various hobbies, I upload and download a lot of files online.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I write a lot using my current old laptop, so a good keyboard would be nice. I also tend to watch a lot of things online. I don't mind spending a bit if it means getting a laptop of a good quality and will last me a good while. I'm also trying to buy a laptop from costco because of how reliable they are with returns, which is making this a bit trickier for me since I tried to find options by going through a lot of old posts first. The original laptop I wanted from costco isn't showing up online anymore, hence me searching again. :/

Currently I'm eyeing this one (https://www.costco.com/Acer-Predator-Helios-300-Gaming-Laptop---Intel-Core-i7---GeForce-GTX-1060---1080p.product.100368662.html), but not sure if it's overkill and I'm paying too much for functions and quality I won't be taking advantage of.

    Thank you in advance!

What laptop should I choose for college: Razer Blade 15, MSI GS65 Stealth Thin (Best Buy version), Dell XPS 15 9570, or Dell G7 15 or other?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 04:18 PM PDT

I need windows so Mac is out. I'll be majoring in engineering so I need to use the laptop for CAD and I want to play games after the school day for 2-3 hrs. at most (no marathon sessions)(I will be using a cooling pad when gaming). I want good build quality and battery that lasts 5+ hrs. Budget is $3k. The Razer Blade 15 is what I am most strongly considering, 1070 or 1060 version, however I have heard Razer has poor quality control. Could their QC issue have changed with the RB15? The MSI seems great but I've heard it has meh build quality. The Dell XPS 15 seems to have good build quality but seems underpowered and supposedly overheats like crazy. The Dell G7 has good specs and a decent price but I've heard it has not so good battery and low quality build. All will be purchased from Best Buy. The Dell laptops would get the 4 year Dell accidental damage warranty and the others would get 4 year Geek Squad warranty with accidental damage. I am open to new suggestions, but no matter what I am buying from Best Buy since it is the only electronics store near me and I prefer buying from a physical location instead of online. Thanks for any and all opinions!😊

    2in1 convertibles

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:39 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

just have a question concerning 2in1 convertibles.

I am currently thinking on buying a 2in1 convertible laptop. I already got one, which seems pretty nice "HP Pavilion x360" (i5-7200U, 8GB, AMD Radeon 530) for round about 800$ (720euros).

Having two questions. The first one is gaming. I have a high end PC at home but I got to travel a lot. I now it's primary not for hardcore gaming, mostly cause of the cooling system, just thinking on playing a little Football Manager or Warframe. You guys think, this will be possible? I looked for the requirements, that won't be a problem. My second question concerning the tablet mode. As I want to use it also as a tablet but it will be coming with Windows 10 64bit, can I use like "Android Apps" for example Netflix, that I can download the movies and watch them offline? Is there such thing?

    Appreciate any help and suggestions!

Right now I have following models on my list: 1. HP spectrex360 15t (avoiding due to their heat issues and QC) 2. Lenovo yoga 930 (has a long wait time 10-13 days)

Looking for a laptop for college while being able to play some games on the side

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 06:44 PM PDT

Hello, as the title suggests, I am looking for a laptop that will last through the day to day life of a college student while also functioning as a decent gaming device. As of right now, I will be majoring in civil engineering, but the engineering specialty may change after freshman year. If it helps, I will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1500, country is USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably <5 lbs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Auto CAD, any common engineering programs, gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Path of Exile and League of Legends for games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard: Something that sticks out and isn't completely flattened Minimum 8 GB worth of memory, preferably 16GB 256 GB SSD minimum

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been looking into the msi GS63VR stealth-252 and the Dell XPS 15. However, the laughable battery life of the former worries me and the keyboard of the latter feels incredibly uncomfortable to use. If there are any suggestions to extending the battery life of the msi laptop, I probably will buy that laptop.

Thank you for your help and time.

Choosing a GTX 1060 based laptop for 1080p gaming- how much worse is a 6829HK going to be than an 8750H?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 02:21 PM PDT

    Hi all,

So yeah, I'm currently on the market for a gaming laptop with a big focus on getting so etching small on light given my career that has me travelling for the majority of the year. I had initially settled on a custom configuration from the UK's main Coevo/Tongfang distributor PCSpecialist, but I've since found another laptop that has the same core specs (GTX 1060 6GB non-MaxQ, 16GB of RAM, 256GB+ SSD storage) but seems a lot better suited to my needs overall- it's quite a bit lighter than the already light 2.2kg model I was considering, has a higher resolution display (I'll be gaming at 1080p but the extra resolution will definitely be appreciated in Lightroom), has better battery life outside of gaming, and doesn't come with the slightly disconcerting pages of bug reports this particular chassis seems to have online.

The one area it loses out, however, is that it uses a sixth gen Core i7 6820HK as opposed to the shiny new hex core Core i7 8750H that the PCSpecialist machine does. My gut is telling me that for 1080p gaming (albeit high-max settings for new titles) and amateur-level Lightroom work this won't really be an issue, but I figured I'd check with you guys first. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

looking for a 13" all amd fanless laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 02:18 PM PDT

    Does anything like this exist?

i'm picking amd because of linux support and things like that, the most important things to me is display and speaker quality, past it all being amd.

    Thank you for your help.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, practically unlimited budget.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. battery life is #1 of those things.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? most important besides speaker/display quality.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. nope

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? i don't care about gaming on my laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD

    Auros X9DT vs. MSI GT75 TITAN 4K-071?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 09:41 PM PDT

I wanna blow my savings, but i need your help. I wouldn't say i'm a hardcore gamer but i do like a computer that won't struggle and can take whatever i throw at it without having to do any overclocking or tweaking. Currently have a custom 2012 MSI GT70 and the only thing i do when gaming is push the turbo and fan button so i want something like that :)

What i don't really care about (not fussed but would be nice if it could have/not have):

    • Not too concerned about the weight but i have to say the two power bricks of the MSI is a little much.
    • Not crazy about looks or amount of RGB (That said i think the Aorus chassis looks too much and the MSI too little)
    • Don't care about fan noise but it should be quiet when i'm just surfing the web or something. -battery life and heat as long as it doesn't explode or gets hot so fast it throttles itself immediately.

What i care about (One clearly having the edge over the other will seal the deal):

    • I really want it to have a nice screen. When i got my current one the MSIs all had some weird grainy texture has this got better? Is the Aorus one nice or should i try the 4k MSI version? (I'm not even sure where to get it, the stock model is 120hz to the Auros 144hz)
    • Reliability, i don't know if either models have things like power issues or throttling or some big heat management flaws - if you do please share!
    • MSI are not the best at CS but at least they have an actual office in Singapore that i can get a hold of for replacement parts. Has anyone dealt with Auros or Gigabyte? The thing is going to have to last me at least the next 6yrs and i will definitely end up replacing something and i want to know if i'll be able to get it done in a hurry.
    • Quality components, i don't want some random manufacturers' RAM or potatoes for SSDs.

Of course i will go down and take a look at both models (the stock FHD MSI, nobody seems to stock the 4K version except online) before i make the final decision but i'm stuck at work daydreaming :)
