    Simple Questions - May 02, 2018

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

What are your thoughts on the new IC Graphite Thermal Pad?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 06:02 PM PDT

I was considering trying this out in my new build in the place of thermal paste, because I've always been notoriously bad at consistent application.

I'm pretty sure close to no one has any experience with this, but if anyone does, I'd love to know how it compares to top-tier non-conductive paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

If your ribbon cables are too stiff... (e.g. SF600)

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:37 AM PDT

I had posted this on /r/sffpc but thought I'd share here as well.

I had recently installed an SF600 into my case, and damn, these cables were stiff. In addition, I needed to rotate the plug differently because of how my PSU was oriented in this case. I took a user's recommendation (forgot who) and stripped the ribbons down to individual wires. They were right!

    Hope this helps someone :D

And an Acer Aspire M1930 motherboard pulled from a prebuild

My PC is running cs:go at 110fps with dips, when other people with similar parts are getting stable 250-300fps. I'm using a 144hz monitor so I would like to achieve at least 200.

I have tried: -Cleaning out dust and reapplying thermal paste -Unparking CPU cores -Reinstalling fresh windows 7 -Installing newest drivers -Using different cs:go launch option commands (-novid -nojoy -high -threads 8 cl_interp_ratio 2 cl_updaterate 128 -tickrate 128 +rate 128000 +mat_queue_mode -2 +fps_max 300)

I don't know what I can try to do anymore, any suggestions are very appreciated.

    HDD vs SSD

    GPU only stable while underclocked.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:35 AM PDT

So i bought a used Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 a while back. In day to day tasks like web browsing, playing around in windows, Game menus etc everything works fine. But whenever i run a medium to heavy game the screen flickers and turns black and the graphics driver crashes. I played around a bit and underclocking the GPU memory from 2000 Mhz to 1750 Mhz and setting maximum state to 2 in wattman makes it mostly stable.

I was browsing around to check whether somebody else is facing this issue and found this. The OP there also made it stable by under clocking but his reasoning looks weird. Could his conclusion be correct?

Thank you to a great community for all your help in my new build

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:20 AM PDT

    Firstly some pics

    Link

Just want to say thank you to everyone who offered advice and recommendations in the last few weeks as I've been planning my build. As well as just to the general community for all the discussion that you can gleam insight from.

This build was replacing one I completed in around 2013, which while still strong in a lot of stuff was becoming very noisy when playing at ultra settings and reaching some very high temps.

As far as building it went, I'm amazed at how user friendly everything is becoming, from simple things like captive thumbscrews, to included velcro strips for cable management and even just general aesthetic alterations.

I already had an M.2 NVMe drive that I purchased last month and migrated my Windows onto so as far as booting goes, I literally ended up straight in Windows with no issues whatsoever.

Cable management took the longest time as I have a lot of RGB going on in my case as well as an AIO that needs its own wires but i'm pretty happy with how I've got things now.

Fanwise, I run three fans as intake with their base speed being about 40% (two of which are in pull config on my radiator) and three fans as exhaust running at a near constant 30%. My only gripe about the Meshify C case is how difficult it was to mount three 120mm fans on the front. The front IO wires nearly preventing this from being possible. I also may have to buy different PCI cables as the ones provided by EVGA are daisy chained with 8 and 6 pin connectors (the GPU uses two 8 pin so you have some pretty thick cables just dangling at the front of your case)

So again, thank you everyone and if you have any questions about the parts I used please feel free to ask away.

(Some of these parts were migrated from my old build, overall cost came to £1600.)

    Far Cry 5 Build - I think I'm Done?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:11 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Specifically looking at Far Cry 5 because it is the most recent game I am looking to play but I'm looking to make a build that will last for a while.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

30-45 at 1080 at the moment.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Around $1000, $1200 as my top end.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States, and near two microcenters.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RBdQD2

Parts marked as purchased are things I already have from my current build (made on ~$1000 in 2013). I also have a Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus Series 500W psu but I've gotten the impression from r/buildmeapc that I need to replace it.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've seen some people recommending 16 gb of RAM. It seems excessive, but I am also wanting this computer to last a long time (minimum of five years) so in the sceme of all this money an extra $90 won't kill me. But I want to know its worth it, and not spend the money needlessly. I have all peripherals I need (monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard).

I would also prefer to order from amazon prime but that's not a hard preference.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    Very compact mid range PC.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 10:05 AM PDT

Thank you all for your wonderful advice, I did manage to build the silly compact rig from my post (https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/8bp2io/mid_spec_compact_gaming_pc_will_it_fitoverheat/) and it works wonders.

    Some pics:

    https://imgur.com/a/9fXkuOn

    Final rig ended like this:

    • CPU INTEL CORE I5-8400 2.8GHZ 9MB
    • GPU EVGA GTX1060 6GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DP
    • RAM 2x CORSAIR VALUESELECT 8GB DDR4 2133MHZ
    • MOTHERBOARD GIGABYTE B360M DS3H
    • CASE SHARKOON MINI-TOWER CA-M
    • PSU THERMALTAKE TR2 S 500W
    • Storage SandisK 500GB SSD and WD 4GB HDD (I managed to find a barely used SSD second hand and I already had the HDD for a long time so I don't remember the models exactly)
    • CPU Cooler Noctua NH-L9x65

The case is ridiculously tiny and was very creative with it's use of space, it even has the hard disks just screwed on the bottom of the case. But considering how well protected from everything it is in its little nook everything seems fine. Only if you ever go for a similar rig get a modular PSU.
I have a small 60mm fan for intake in the back and an 120mm fan exhaust at the top. Temperatures ended up being very manageable. CPU peaks at about 75C, which is damn good considering how crammed everything is. The small fans on everything make the case pretty noisy when it is under a heavy workload, but it was expected and the house is noisy enough for it to not matter.
Performance-wise it works quite well, it can handle everything I threw at it till now at mid-high graphics at 1080p 60fps which is all I needed anyway.

Again thank you all for the advice!

its all built in a cheap generic midtower case so i dont know what other info i can give, i tried whipping out my Google fu but i still dont understand jack.

Monitor Help: need monitor compatible with MacBook and PC

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:44 PM PDT

    Hello

I have a new MacBook with usb-c ports and a PC that I am looking to hook up to the same monitor if possible. I would like a widescreen 27-34" range that can connect via usb-c to the MacBook and DisplayPort to the PC. The graphics card in the PC is Nvidia. Also, I would prefer it not be curved if possible and do 4K. Budget isn't a huge concern but would like to stay under $1,000.

    Is LGA1151 worth investing in?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:23 PM PDT

I recently set up a budget build for myself. I was recommended the i3 8100 for the processor due to the excellent budget power in that processor. However, I fear that he LGA1151 will become obsolete in the coming year. Is it worth investing in Ryzen instead for the AM4 platform, that is guaranteed to be supported for many years to come?

    Thanks!

New PC to last me the next 7 years!

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:04 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to build a new pc as my 7 year old rig has been showing it's age for a while now.

Intended use: almost 24/7 always-on, small form factor HTPC/Home Server/NAS/Seedbox. Will mainly be downloading torrents, playing audio/video files (FLAC & 1080p for now, maybe 4k down the road), and storing/backing up various data.

No plan for gaming as I have an Alienware R13 for that (even then, really just limited Overwatch/Heroes of the Storm fidelity games).

Budget: Nothing concrete, but ideally $300-$400 (not including storage). Mainly aiming for bang for buck and longevity. Purchasing parts in California, USA. Not in a rush, so can/will wait for sales and discounts.

    Current draft of potential build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD - Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor $94.59 @ SuperBiiz
    Motherboard Gigabyte - GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI (rev. 1.0) Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard $111.94 @ Newegg
    Memory Patriot - Viper Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory $85.99 @ Amazon
    Storage Western Digital - Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive $108.00 @ B&H
    Storage Western Digital - Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive $108.00 @ B&H
Case Cooler Master - Elite 110 Mini ITX Tower Case $38.99 @ SuperBiiz
    Power Supply Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply $46.99 @ Amazon
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $594.50
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-05-02 17:03 EDT-0400

There's quite a few caveats with this draft, and is exactly what I'd like to request help with!

    1. CPU: Since the Ryzen 2200GE isn't on PCPartPicker, I used the 2200G as a placeholder. One concern here is that AMD lists no thermal solution for the 2200GE. If that turns out to be true, will I need to purchase a cooler fan or heatsink?

    2. Motherboard: PCPartPicker has a very small list that is AM4 ITX. Basically becomes a choice between Gigabyte GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI (rev. 1.0) or ASRock AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac. Are there any other options not listed on PCPartPicker? Are there major differences between these two choices? Are both future proof in terms of 4k ability (CPU seems to have sufficient passmark for multiple 4k streams)?

    3. RAM: Does any DDR4 RAM suffice? How much difference does the different speeds (e.g. 2133 vs 2400) or series (e.g. Patriot Signature vs Patriot Viper) make?

    4. Storage: Might be doing a RAID 5 setup down the road, but for now probably just a RAID 1 setup with two WD Reds (haven't decided on the actual size to buy yet). I know WD Reds are super popular for NAS setup, but are there any concerns with using it here?

    5. Case: Couldn't find a smaller, cheaper box. Not much else to say here.

    6. Power Supply: Is any 450W 80+ Bronze (or better) sufficient to run this? Will there be any noticeable durability or noise advantages by going with a certain brand/model? Should I avoid 550W and higher to keep prices/noise low?

Sorry for the long post! Just wanted to provide as much information as I can think of. Appreciate any and all help.

    Thank you!

    Raven Ridge HTPC

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:30 AM PDT

I'm looking to build around the 2200g. This build will mainly be used for streaming (4K Netflix and any other services that offer 4K playback), playing blu rays and dvds, light internet browsing, and some light gaming. Eventually I want to rip and store my blu ray collection to this PC, but I plan on buying a large capacity HDD at some point in the future for that. Any advice is greatly appreciated! (All prices listed are the current price at Microcenter since I live close to one and the parts for sale there were overall cheaper than the prices found through pcpartpicker.)

Is selling new built computers profitable?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:21 PM PDT

So over the summer I'm thinking about about getting more experienced with building computers just as a useful skill. I've built one about a year and a half ago but I believe it's a useful skill for what I want to do later on. So the main reason is just to build it to learn but if I was able to cut a profit that would make it a lot more appealing. So is buying all the components and assembling it profitable? Is there enough demand for it on websites like Craigslist?

Example: If I build a budget gaming pc for 500 (pentium gold, 1050/1050ti or a Ryzen 5 2400g), where would I sell it but more importantly how much should I mark it up if at all.

Those were some niche questions and idk if this is the right sub to say something but this is one of the most helpful, if not the most for PC related questions. Thanks

Main monitor video cuts out repeatedly when ambient temperature is warm, but computer temps look fine.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

My primary monitor will flicker off and back on, repeatedly, when the weather is warm. However, computer temperatures look fine.

This issue first started last summer, which was the first summer after I got both my GTX1080, and my new 1440p monitor from Monoprice. I dealt with the issue by simply having the AC running whenever I was gaming during the summer months, and of course ran into no issues during the fall/winter.

A little over a month ago, I built a brand new computer (which is the one you see above), but carried over my monitors (the MP 27" one, and two ASUS 24" ones), the GTX 1080, and the PSU.

Now that the weather is warming up again (we just hit 85F today), the issue has returned.

I had hoped that whatever was causing my issue had been something with the hardware on my last build, but given the issue is back, that is not the case.

I don't have another GPU to test with, but I very much doubt the GPU is the cause of the issue here considering I have two other Asus 24" monitors that are fine.

So, my hypothesis is that it's the monitor itself. However, I wanted to run this by people who are far more knowledgeable than I am to make sure I haven't missed anything.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

While it wasn't done with the express purpose of troubleshooting this issue, as stated above I did build a new PC about a month ago, and the only parts carried over from the previous build were the GPU, PSU, and the monitors.

I haven't been able to swap either the GPU or the PSU since I have no replacements for either. But considering that the temperatures are fine, I have no reason to believe the GPU is the cause, and if it were the PSU, I'd expect it to affect all of my monitors.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Here is a video of the issue, along with my computer's temperatures at that time: https://youtu.be/wRcc5oj6BPg

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Could warm temperatures affect the monitor hardware in such a way that it would cause this type of issue?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!
