Step counting on Samsung Health way too low?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:59 AM PDT

I have a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Normally I use my gear sport with Samsung health to count steps which works perfectly well. Due to my work I can't wear it all the time, so I want to rely on the phone to count steps while in my pocket. Samsung Health however is always factor 4 lower than Huawei Health (which counts within 10 percent accuracy to Watch so I know it is right, so real steps 8000 and Samsung will report 2000). Is there a way to adjust Samsung health to count properly from phone sensors?

S9+: number badge on default mail app icon disappears after opening app

    Posted: 02 May 2018 04:55 AM PDT

I've just got an S9+ (my first Android phone!), and while I love it, the default Samsung mail app is driving me crazy. I am using it with a gmail account and an icloud account, and while emails are working fine, the notifications seem to be broken.

Specifically, I have it set to display a number badge on the app icon for unread mail. This works fine, but if I open the app when I have new mail in, the number badge on the icon vanishes, even if I still have unread mail in either inbox.

I've been through all the notification settings in the app and in the main settings, and I can't find anything that would control this.

Is this a bug, or is there something I have missed?

Galaxy A8 or Huawei P20 Lite?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 03:47 AM PDT

They're approximately the same price here where I live, I currently own a P10 Lite (quite satisfied by it, I might add, minus the battery life and the camera quality should be better) and I'm seriously considering the A8 for my next phone given that, from all the reviews I've read, it has a better camera, display and battery life compared to the P10 Lite or even the P20 Lite.

I'd very much appreciate if some A8 owners could tell me how it performs in day to day use, how is the camera, the audio quality (speaker and headphones) etc.

Why are Samsung phones' displays so dim in manual mode?

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:52 AM PDT

I've been thinking about this for quite some years now. I've gone through a I9000 Galaxy S, an I9500 Galaxy S4, a Galaxy S7 Edge, and am now a proud owner of an S9+. No offence towards these phones and even more so towards their displays. But it's one thing that has really been bothering me - why have they all been so dim in manual mode?

Some stats according to gsmarena's reviews:

    • I9000 Galaxy S max brightness - 395 nits
    • I9100 Galaxy S2 max brightness - 362 nits
    • I9300 Galaxy S3 max brightness - 330 nits
    • I9500 Galaxy S4 max brightness - 404 nits
    • Galaxy S5 max brightness (manual) - 529 nits (this one seems to be the outlier)
    • Galaxy S5 max brightness (auto) - 617 nits
    • Galaxy S6 Edge max brightness (manual) - 313 nits (and there we go again)
    • Galaxy S6 Edge max brightness (auto) - 601 nits
    • Galaxy S6 Edge+ max brightness (manual) - 410 nits
    • Galaxy S6 Edge+ max brightness (auto) - 540 nits
    • Galaxy S7 Edge max brightness (manual) - 392 nits
    • Galaxy S7 Edge max brightness (auto) - 610 nits
    • Galaxy S8+ max brightness (manual) - 442 nits
    • Galaxy S8+ max brightness (auto) - 647 nits
    • Galaxy Note 8 max brightness (manual) - 412 nits
    • Galaxy Note 8 max brightness (auto) - 647 nits
    • Galaxy S9+ max brightness (manual) - 376 nits
    • Galaxy S9+ max brightness (auto) - 631 nits

And then to compare all of those with some IPS displays:

    • Apple iPad Pro 10.5" max brightness - 600 nits
    • Apple iPhone 8 Plus max brightness (manual) - 530 nits
    • Apple iPhone 8 Plus max brightness (auto) - 621 nits
    • Asus Zenfone 3 max brightness - 607 nits
    • Huawei P20 max brightness (manual) - 477 nits
    • Huawei P20 max brightness (auto) - 695 nits

Now you might say that it's cause "IPS are brighter" but then there are phones like:

    • LG G6 max brightness (manual) - 468 nits
    • LG G6 max brightness (auto) - 564 nits

    and most prominently:

    • Apple iPhone X max brightness - 679 nits - in both manual and auto modes

The maximum brightness achieved on the S9+ under heavy sunlight is absolutely phenomenal but otherwise it honestly feels rather lacklustre - especially compared to most screens nowadays that easily hit a brightness of 500+ nits. The S9+ in manual mode is not only dimmer than the S8+ and the S7 Edge but it's dimmer than the first Galaxy S as well. Yet the iPhone X display which should be basically near identical can rock a brightness of 679 nits all the time. My question is - why?

EDIT: Sorry for the horrendous formatting but I still can't figure out how to space stuff properly in this new reddit.

    Mailing for repair

    Posted: 01 May 2018 03:30 PM PDT

I recently bought an S8 U.S. Unlocked Version (a couple months ago) and, like the terrible phone owner I am, broke it. I live in Mexico, and would really like to get the water resistance back. Best Buy has a promise that they give you the phone back just like new, but Samsung Certified centers in Mexico don't fix U.S. phones, so I gotta go the U.S. to fix it (for a week, that's about how long they take). But I was wondering if anybody knew if I could ship it to have it fixed without having to actually go there (the path has become slightly dangerous recently)?

TL;DR- Got a US phone and I'm in Mexico, broke it, can't get it fixed here, too dangerous to go to the US, I want to mail it for repairs.

Bixby voice not working on Galaxy s9 for reminders

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:57 AM PDT

Hi, I've been using my so for about a month now and i've been using bixby voice to set reminders every so often, but today I tried to set a reminder and it didn't work. I did everything exactly the same but instead of getting a response i just get the "great" and "teach me" buttons. I opened up the app to see if it registered but it only shows up with a random number as the reminder with a transcript of what I said and no time setting to remind me. I restarted my phone and made sure that my settings weren't out of whack but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Installed A 8gb Micro sd card into my galaxy s5 mini, it shows up as "portable" storage. What does that mean?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 12:56 AM PDT

Does it just act like normal storage? Or do I have to select it whenever I wanna download things like games onto it?

    Is this a bug??

    Posted: 01 May 2018 10:33 PM PDT

I have a Samsung galaxy s9 and right now I'm trying to update my apps on Google play store and when I click update it stays at downloading without moving the percentage. I tried factory resetting, wipe cache partion and clearing data for Google play store and it still doesn't work. After I factory reset it is fix but then the issue returns!!!!

    Question about Samsung Galaxy S9

    Posted: 01 May 2018 08:56 PM PDT

So I am a social media manager which means I manage companys social media accounts (Twitter Instagram etc) and they called me today and told me I need to switch phones for "security purposes" and they told me the phone I will be receiving is a Samsung Galaxy S9. I am an iPhone 7 user and I never used a Samsung phone. I have used IOS for almost 9 years. In the past the company sent me other phones to use but I never used them. Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it and if you have one, How do you like it? I heard many amazing things about the camera.

So long story short. I’ve had this tv for 4 months now and noticed a thin black horizontal line pop up a few days ago and now a vertical one is connecting to it. I’m sure it’s a bad panel or something. I’ve been dealing with Samsung for a few days and it’s been a pain. Any suggestions?

    Rip off!

    Posted: 01 May 2018 03:52 PM PDT

I traded in a galaxy s7 during there Xmas promotion. Still haven't gotten my 400 dollars credit. I'm in the phone now and they're trying to rip me off with store credit. I don't ever want to purchase anything from these people again. Give me my money towards the note 8 I purchased like we originally agreed! It's been six fucking months! I'll never buy anything from Samsung again

They "updated" Bixby and now I can do even LESS.

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:35 AM PDT

It was bad enough that the "hi bixby" hands free option didnt work on my phone, and when i looked it up, it seemed like everyone elsehad the same issue so I let it go. So imagine my excitement when i get a notification for a bixby update!! But was it better? No. I can no longer hold the bixby button and tell it to text people. It has so many pop ups for not texting so i dont even know how to "teach bixby" the correct way. Even when i simply say "Text insert name it doesnt even open the text screen. It just shows me the contact and when ot asks how i would like to contact them and i hit "text" another pop up qith different messaging options appears. And i dont understand the point of bixby if it take more buttons to text someone than if I had just done it manually.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus Microphone Issue

    Posted: 01 May 2018 11:07 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

A person I know has been having issues with her S8 plus. She recently had her phone screen (Screen and LED Backing fixed) and when it was returned to her saturday its been bugging out. The issue with it is that her microphone for calls will cut out at random on calls but when she records snapchats it works fine. Any fixes or?

    Thanks

    Galaxy J3 Network issue

    Posted: 01 May 2018 09:57 AM PDT

I have a Galaxy J3 Luna Pro on TracFone and even though the phone works (can make calls, send texts etc.) The area where the carrier name should be on the lock screen and in settings is blank, occasionally Verizon Wireless will show up but otherwise it is blank. Is this just a TracFone thing? Or is something wrong with the phone or OS (android 6.0.1). Tracfone says the SIM Is activated and I tried the SIM in an unlocked iPhone and it showed the carrier name as TFW.
