Help choosing new work laptop (UK £1.5k max) Posted: 02 May 2018 04:26 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: MAX budget of £1500 though cheaper is definitely appreciated. Looking for a balance of power to grow into, whilst not spending bucket loads (working for a small charity where expenses must be rationalised appropriately) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No interest in 2in1, battery life is a factor but specs are paramount (especially cooling performance as the laptop will travel with me to hot countries). How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively important, but in the context of cooling system being a priority. Currently on a 2.1kg/4.63lbs laptop no problem, so anything under 3kg/6.6lbps is probably fine. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" through 17" is acceptable. Colour accuracy is a consideration, though it doesn't need to be super high end professional. I have an external monitor with 100% sRGB for desktop use - but I can't deal with the panel being a terrible 54% sRGB TN or something. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Office and web-browser work 50% of the time, photo editing and design 30% of the time, video editing 20% of the time (with a desire to increase the latter over the next year). I have an R7 2700x based desktop at home for video editing, but my boss wants me to upgrade my i5 4210u based laptop to stop relying on my home hardware. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A ... though I might fire up a game if working away O/S sometimes. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As above, the screen needs to be decent enough for some basic design work (near accurate and at least 1080p) and the GPU must be nvidia for CUDA acceleration in Adobe. Must have 16gb RAM (or upgradeable to such), and MUST have an SSD plus HDD storage array, ideally with expansion space (ideal upgrade to eventual 120-240gb for OS & apps plus 120gb NVME for scratch disk plus 1tb minimum for storage) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Focus on a robust cooling system to promote longevity especially if working in the field in Africa somewhere. Again, saving money is good, but investing in a capable machine is also appropriate. submitted by /u/Beehj84 [link] [comments] |

i need a laptop for work, budget doesnt matter but there's a twist! Posted: 01 May 2018 12:52 PM PDT does anyone know of a laptop that will let me plug an HDMI into it and let me use the screen as a monitor? two possible use cases: 1) i connect to a virtual machine to telecommute, so i don't need anything powerful. 2) recently i've been doing lan parties at my friend's house where we all bring over a console and play a game while we drink & stuff. i was planning on buying something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P45U628/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER i need a work laptop and a nice small portable monitor would be nice for vacations and lan parties. i was hoping to knock out two birds with one stone on a single purchase. do you guys have any recommendations, or am i just crazy for asking this? also, none of my IRL friends are PC gamers so if i go to their house i need to bring a ps4. submitted by /u/jeffreydontlook [link] [comments] |

Need sub-$500 Windows OS laptop that basically functions as a Chromebook but can compile Java. Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and the best specifications are about equal in priority. How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't really care. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I only need a laptop with Windows OS for compiling java programs. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like one with good build quality, keyboard, etc., the rest are unnecessary. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If I didn't need to compile java programs for my college classes I would've went straight for the Chromebook. I was considering using Crouton on a Chromebook, but I'd rather weight my options first. Basically just something that can do the basic functions of the Chromebook but runs Windows OS, and can handle light multitasking like streaming from Spotify, or Youtube while surfing the web. submitted by /u/Croissantus [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on Alienware 17 Posted: 01 May 2018 10:01 PM PDT Hey all so after about 2 weeks of looking for a good gaming laptop for under $2000 grand the Alienware 17 is looking pretty good to me. The specs on the one im thinking of are - 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 - 17.3 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits - 16GB DDR4 at 2400MHz (2x8GB) - 256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage) What do you guys think? that puts me at about $1750 on the main Dell website. i'm looking for a machine that I can play pretty much all games on at high settings now and for the next few years at 60+FPS. I did have a few questions. - I read that the screen is only 60hz. How much will that affect game play or should I look for something that is 120Hz
- For $25 more I can go from Killer 1435 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 to Killer 1550 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0, Is this worth it?
- For an additional $50 I can go from Lithium Ion (68 Wh) Battery to Lithium Ion (99 Wh) Battery, Is this going to make a difference
- Lastly would you suggest getting any of the extended warranties that are offered?
Much Thanks (In the US BTW) submitted by /u/Jahavan [link] [comments] |

Starving artist in search of new laptop for my starving artist boyfriend Posted: 01 May 2018 08:34 PM PDT Hi I'm looking for a new laptop for my boyfriend. He currently has a Surface Pro and it is absolute garbage. The screen is in a constant state of shaking. We can't figure out why or how to fix it but it's intolerable. He is a designer and uses the adobe suite daily. Don't have a specific budget, but the lower the better. Under $1000 for sure. Battery life isn't top priority, but it's a plus. What matters is the ability to run the adobe suite quickly and a screen that is high quality. He's been using Windows with the surface, but that's not an absolute requirement. Personally I prefer macs for creative work, but macs are just so expensive. He's not super tech savvy but he needs something that can run 1-2 adobe programs at a time and still be able to play music in the background on Spotify. Also something with a relatively long lifespan. He just got the surface a little over a year ago and it's constantly crashing on him and this screen jiggle is just impossible to deal with when trying to work with highly detailed graphic work. No gaming requirements at all. Thanks so much! submitted by /u/estew4525 [link] [comments] |

Good IO, decent build quality - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

13" laptop, $2500-3000, with good battery life/portability and suitable for scientific work [USA] Posted: 01 May 2018 07:35 PM PDT Hello! I am looking for a new laptop to use for work (I am a scientist working in a cell biology lab) and for personal use. Total budget and country of purchase: ~$3000 max (closer to $2500 would be good); United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Battery life is important; I'd like to be able to use it while traveling, such as when I'm at an airport then on a plane for several hours. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be portable, but it does not need to be the thinnest and lightest laptop on the market. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have always had a PC (and currently have a mostly functional Toshiba), partly for cost reasons, but I am considering getting a Macbook Pro. Mostly, I like the look and feel of Macs, and from observing colleagues with Macs, they seem to be more reliable. I also occasionally have to use Secure Shell, which seems easier (at least initially) on a Mac. I am not used to Macs so it would be a learning curve, so I would also be happy with a PC. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13" (something small enough to use on a plane but not so small I can't see what I'm doing) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. For work, I frequently run multiple programs at once, such as Chrome, Illustrator, Photoshop, Powerpoint, Excel (large spreadsheets with thousands of cells and formulas), microscope software, and occasionally some programming software like Matlab or IDL-based programs. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a relatively sturdy computer since I take it back and forth to work every day. I frequently make presentations that require VGA or HDMI hookup, but I could get an adapter if the computer doesn't have either option. I do also watch movies on my computer, so it would be nice to have decent speakers. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I like my current Toshiba Satellite S55-B (i7-4720HQ, 12GM RAM; bought three years ago), but the 15 inch screen and poor battery life mean it's not great for travel or working at a coffee shop. Programs also tend to freeze when they are doing anything too intensive (like saving an Illustrator file with many parts or trying to copy a formula into thousands of cells in Excel), which I think may be an issue with not enough memory to run everything at once. I also need a fair amount of storage- I currently have about 600 Gb on my harddrive, so 1 Tb or more would be ideal. I am currently thinking about a Dell XPS 13 or a Macbook Pro 13. Thanks for any suggestions! Let me know if there is anything I can clarify. submitted by /u/dyakuba [link] [comments] |
Gaming laptop advice!? Posted: 01 May 2018 03:28 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget would be approx. £600-700. I'm based in the UK and therefore £. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Nothing massively applies here. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. Steam. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to be able to play most games at medium, with a stable frame rate. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would a 'good' gaming laptop for my budget. I don't want to run Battlefield 1 at ultra, but would definitely like to be able to play newer games at medium, and to be able to play all games from 2016 and behind. submitted by /u/osu26b [link] [comments] |
Moving from Tablet to laptop, please help open my eyes to a new adventure! Posted: 01 May 2018 06:53 PM PDT Hi there! I'm looking for a first PC laptop for home/church use, I've got an older Samsung laptop for home use, and a horrible old PC I can no longer use. Hoping someone out there can help find a reasonably priced laptop for browsing and possible minor/ low-grade gaming in the future. I'm not very familiar with understanding all the technical aspects of things, but I'm getting some help from family too. Thank you for any help! Total budget and country of purchase: $500-1200? buying in Canada, Ontario Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Battery life is not much of an issue, more interested in speed and clean feel user experience. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, at least reasonably average size screen? Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some browser games, possibly upgrading in the future game wise to simple games. Nothing too graphic intense I don't imagine. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A, Maybe WoW on low graphics settings someday? But mostly just general browser games. Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Money isn't great atm, have just about retired, and a rather low income, so cheaper but a bit of quality would really be a blessing. Thank you so much! submitted by /u/Gwynnie_Trueheart [link] [comments] |
