Why can't the "where" command on the command line find installed programs? Windows Help

Why can't the "where" command on the command line find installed programs?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:26 PM PST

I am learning how to use Windows command prompt / PowerShell, and I love the "where" command to help find applications (it's very similar to the "which" command used by linux users).

So I'm able to find powershell and explorer by running "where powershell" and "where explorer", but I can't find my recently installed programs chrome and firefox by using "where chrome" or "where firefox". Should I be passing a parameter into the where command so that it searches for installed applications? Or does the where command only work on applications that come with Windows? Thank you

edit: Okay I'll run "where.exe /R C:\ *whatever*" from PowerShell whenever I need to search the system for something. Microsoft don't you dare ever change this, I'm committing this forever to memory. And for some reason it's like ten times faster than searching through the explorer/folders application. Huh.

What was Microsoft's reason for making Windows XP look the way it did?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:21 PM PST

Why did Microsoft suddenly jump from the cold, practical, business look of Windows 2000 to the warm, child-friendly, home-oriented look of Windows XP? I've been wondering about this for a long time.

Wi-fi turns off randomly and the Wi-Fi switch disappears until I turn off the laptop. Even the W-fi settings disappear.

This happens only to my Windows 10 HP Notebook. Any other device works fine. My router doesn't have any problems. This is insane.

    Windows 10 1709 random freezes

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:33 AM PST

Is there any solution to the random freezes Windows 10 introduced with 1709 (aka Fall Creators Update)?

Is there any newer update I can get that fixes the problem? Maybe I can downgrade my computer? If that's the case, how?

I am looking forward for your answers, please. For the last months, everytime I've been at the computer, I've been sitting at the edge of the chair, with my heart going crazy.

Creating a temporary pin or not compromising security when others log in to a sold computer.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 07:44 PM PST

I sold a laptop to someone I know from a forum. Before I sent it, I reset windows 10 and thought I had cleared the user info out. According to him, I didn't clear out the user login out. He is trying to retrieve the windows key to do a full reinstallation, but says he needs my pin to get in to the computer.

I believe at the login screen you can access the wifi, so I figure if I update my pin temporarily he will be able to get in, do what he needs to do, and then I can change my pin. I'm not really comfortable doing this as there are a number of obvious security concerns there.

Windows 7 was originally on the machine, then it was updated to Windows 10 via the free upgrade IIRC.

Anyone have suggestions as to how I should proceed?

I need some help with my Windows 10 Machine, please read.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:35 PM PST

    Hello Reddit!

I'm hoping you can help me with my problems, and so far a reinstall is the only solution I can see. Before I list any problems, please understand; The system is fairly modern, i5 6200u, 8GB RAM, SSD; I ran Malware Bytes + Avast + ADWCleaner with no results (I'm not an idiot on the internet) and the hard drive was taken out of an older laptop, and put into this one I'm talking about.

    The issues I am facing are;

Strange performance issue. Not many programs installed and performance is heavily impacted. Before transferring the SSD from the old laptop to the new laptop, the new laptop was performing amazing and the old one was very slow and had low ram issues (it was 4GB's). From times the system will freeze, and have troubles doing simple websites like Google Sheets, or programs like PyCharm.I really can't explain it, but the CPU taps out so fast, I swear it's like theres a virus but I cannot find it.

Next issue, I would LOVE to solve this. From times, a program will just take 100% control and focus. I can only control that specific window, if I click the taskbar it won't do anything, and if I click Win + 2 (to swap programs) it will work, but then the moment I click or type it goes back to the program. I've seen the only way to fix this is to close and open my screen a bunch of times. It's very odd, and the best way to explain it is "The software is taking 100% focus." The software that is taking 100% focus still functions, but other programs it won't. This issue occurred very rarely, and now is happening on a daily basis. I'll take a video next time this happens.

    I appreciate any help.

    Touchscreen Stops Working on Laptop

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 02:33 PM PST

Windows 10. Dell Inspiron 15-7537 laptop. Touchscreen stopped working, as did a wired mouse connected by USB. Tried a lot of fixes with no success, so did a system restore to about a week ago and voila they both worked! Then within an hour they both stopped working again. The HID-compliant touchscreen is listed as a hidden device and when I click on properties I get "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)". I did another time-consuming system restore and it again worked for about an hour or so and then stopped. Since system restore is working temporarily, I don't think it's a physical connection problem between the touchscreen and the laptop. Any thoughts?

I a planning to build a pc in the near future, but after seeing the price for windows 10 it makes me want to download linux instead, which kinda sucks because I love windows. But I came up with a idea. Would I be able to get a flashdrive and copy my windows 10 version over to this newly built pc?

Does someone know of a such program?

Is it too late to preview version 1803?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 04:48 AM PST

Will I just have to wait for the official rollout to check it out now? I made one of my PCs an Insider PC (on the "Fast" ring) but nothing came down from their side to update my computer.

I had an Insider PC awhile back but I stopped updating that one (it was really outdated anyway) so I don't know what's changed about the Insider program since then.

    Windows 10 and Upgrading PC

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:58 PM PST

I'm going to upgrade my PC soon and want to know how it will work. I'm replacing everything but the hard drives. Windows 10 is associated to my Microsoft account. I'm hoping I can just build it and plug the harddrives in and have everything the same as I left it in the old build. The guides I've seen talk about reinstalling Windows on the new machine, skipping the product key and then registering with your microsoft account that you associated to your key earlier. I don't want to do a fresh install if possible though.

Microsoft trying to force install Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:56 PM PST

I keep removing the Windows 10 Upgrade assistant and it comes back, sometimes within mere minutes.

I don't want your advertisement and force-installed shitty King games, or crippling of anti-telemetry countermeasures, Microsoft. I want control of the PC that I own and not you. I want to stay happily where I am at 1604 without all of your compulsory bullshit. FUCK OFF AND DIE!

People wouldn't hate your garbage fucking operating system if you stopped trying to assert control over their system in such an Orwellian fashion. Let all of us who aren't complete idiots opt out so we have no reason to complain. For fuck sake!

    Computer Crisis! Help!

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:39 PM PST

I'll try and explain just how awful this is and what I've done so far.

    • Got an egpu for my laptop
    • working fine until thunderbolt disconnected from port
    • blue sad face screen with nvlddmkn.sys error (Nvidia related) -SYSTEM THREAD EXTENSION NOT HANDLED
    • laptop starts autoresetting and blue screen turns to pink screen
    • I can't get it to start on safe mode
    • tried to use Windows media creation to repair and get to advanced settings to help but all options return errors and do nothing

I'm horrified at how such a simple accident has seemingly ruined my laptop.

Please if anyone can even direct me towards a relevant piece of information I'd be so grateful.

I feel like I've exhausted all my options here

    I can’t factory reset windows 10

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:25 PM PST

So I decided to pull out my old laptop and factory reset it, but once I click "get started" under recovery settings, another window pops up for a split second and both that and Settings crash. Any solution? I'm on an older TP (16241) and I can't install updates either.

Command Prompt randomly flashed and closed immediately

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 05:11 PM PST

Hello everyone. I was just watching netflix when all of a sudden, a windows command prompt flashed on my screen (over the movie) and closed immediately after showing. I was unable to see what it said because of how fast this action was. It has only happened once. I do have a windows update that I need to install so could it possibly be that? Could I have a malware of some sort? I scan my computer almost daily and I scanned it after this command prompt flash and stated no threats were found. Thank you for your time.

Windows 10 can no longer increase resolution size: Help

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 04:53 PM PST

    Hello there guys.

The recent Windows 10 update apparently crashed and corrupted my version which forced me in the end to do a complete reinstall (Frustrating, very.)

So far I've gotten alot of the old stuff back on and running but now I can't increase my resolution past 1920 x 1080.

I'm using a 40 inch hd tv as my computer monitor and before had the settings at 2560.

If anyone knows the fix for this it would be appreciated.

Windows 10 keeps downgrading my graphics drivers

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:55 PM PST

Windows keeps rolling back my AMD graphics drivers to 17.1.1. I use DDU to get rid of it and put the correct one on, go to the windows update page and can see windows is immediately downloading the wrong driver again in the background so it can downgrade my PC without even telling me.

Is there any way I can turn this off? It's driving me insane.
