    Best way to back up my phone before factory reset?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:21 PM PST

    I've got a Galaxy S7 Edge that's chock full of lag and jank. I'm hoping that a factory reset will help, at least for the next few months until my 2yr upgrade cycle renews. Obviously it's easy to back up my media and other files, but I'm more worried about app data. On the other hand, certain apps might be what's slowing down my phone in the first place. Can anyone help with this?

    The severe weather alert glitched and is my message tone and I can't change it.

    HTC1 M8

    No matter what I set my text message tone to, it will instead play the alarm tone for severe weather and amber alerts. I have to keep my phone on vibrate because the sound bothers me so much.

    Will my Moto G5 work in the US?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:52 PM PST

    I ordered a Moto G5 from Amazon (Not the G5 Plus). I thought it would be a good upgrade from the G4 Play and I need the fingerprint scanner (I've typed in my pin number 1000's of times, it's super annoying).

    My sim card won't fit (AT&T MicroSim) into the NanoSim slot on the G5. Can I just get a NanoSim from an AT&T store?

    Will this phone work on AT&T 4G in the US? I didn't research it enough, it was mostly an impulse buy.

    LG G5 (AT&T LG-H820) USB modem unlock?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:56 PM PST

    I'm trying to unlock an LG G5 using the technique outlined here:

    https://articles.forensicfocus.com/2017/02/03/unlocking-the-screen-of-an-lg-android-smartphone-with-at-modem-commands/

    I'm coming across an issue where the phone isn't showing up as a modem in Windows 10, just as a portable device.

    When trying to pass the phone through to a virtual Windows 7 machine, same thing happens.

    Trying this on a physical Windows 7 box currently isn't feasible.

    Any thoughts?

    What are your ideas on the recent news on Chinese phones and spying?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:24 PM PST

    With the recent CIA documents stating that Chinese phone makers should not be trusted, is that something that should be considered when buying a phone?

    Is there ANY way in the world to get my data off my bricked Android (Google Pixel 2 XL) phone?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:57 AM PST

    My Pixel 2 XL filled up yesterday because it didn't back up photos/videos to Google Photos while I was on vacation (in addition to enabling backup over the wireless network, one has to explicitly enable backup while roaming, which I didn't realize). I only found out that the phone was full once apps started crashing after I took the last few photos really filling it up and I looked at the memory usage. I found the "backup while roaming" toggle and tried to quickly erase some photos, but the Google Photos app started crashing itself. When I tried to restart it, hoping that would clear some data from the cache and make the phone usable again so I could erase some files, it wouldn't come back on but instead got stuck on the boot screen. A day later this is still the situation I'm in: it simply stays in that state until the battery is depleted. An obvious speculation would be that this is still the result of the phone being too full.

    When I posted about this on the Pixel User community on Google's forums today, only one person answered that my data is likely irrecoverable since I have to do a factory reset. He/she also mentions I could try to "side load the OTA", but it doesn't sound like they have high hopes and I don't even know how to safely do that.

    Needless to say I'm very frustrated that my precious vacation memories are all gone. I'm also quite confused that there appears to be nothing one can do given that the data should all still be on the phone. Bluntly (and perhaps naively) speaking, why can't one physically rip out the memory and hook it up to an external device, then provide my pass code when prompted for it, and take the media files off of it?

    Root Problems

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:16 PM PST

    I have an SPH-L900 that I'm trying to root. I've tried a few different versions of Odin (including the latest), but no dice. I need to install a new ROM on it (I'm totally open to suggestions) because its stock version of Android is too old to run the apps I need.

    Thanks in advance.

    Recovering data after being forced into a factory reset? (Galaxy S6)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:13 PM PST

    I've got TWRP installed and I'm on 7.0 after recently being forced into a factory reset, but as far as I know, this only formats the device and doesn't actually erase anything. Does anybody know of any tutorials or methods I can use to find pictures in the formatted areas?

    I've not done anything else beyond install my apps that I had previously.

    Android Messages Takes Forever to Send Texts

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:38 AM PST

    Hey all! Running into an issue here and hoping some of you can provide some feedback!

    ~~~Phone: Pixel 2 XL
    ~~~Carrier: Google Fi

    ~~~App: default Android Messages app
    Issue: Texts to all of my contacts send fine, from "sending" to "sent" within a second or two. Consistently. All the time.
    Texts to my girlfriend do not. These texts can take up to 60 seconds to send, getting stuck on "sending" a bunch. Sometimes, the app will freeze up and crash, and any texts that were "sending" fail to send. I'm assuming this is due to the large volume of texts on the thread. Is there any way to prevent them all from loading while not deleting them permanently?
    Is there any way around this other than deleting all texts? I'd prefer to keep these--is there an app that will allow me to back up only one contact's text messages and delete only one contact's messages? I don't want to delete all my text messages, as texts to everyone else send fine, and I don't want to permanently lose these texts. If I could have them back up on a computer, that would be ideal.
    Anyone with similar issues? Any suggestions/fixes?
    Hey guys, So i'm thinking of buying the Galaxy S9. Got told that they are offering the Gear Fit Pro 2 for free with pre orders. And if i pre order before the 7th, i will get the phone on the 8th.
    What do you think of this offer? Is the Gear Fit Pro 2 actually any good for a person not interested in the fitness side of it?
    Squaretrade Galaxy S8 replacement has terrible signal, Service provider XAA vs ATT?
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:02 PM PST
    I received my replacement S8 from squaretrade today and immediately noticed I couldn't get mobile network signal anywhere. I compared my old broken phone's "About Phone" and "SIM Status" and found some differences that could be the culprit:
    Old broken phone from AT&T
    "service provider SW ver."
    SAOMC_SM-G950U_OYN_ATT_0188
    9887e035454b323939
    ATT/ATT/ATT
    "SIM CARD STATUS"
    Signal Strength -96dBm 44 asu
    Replacement S8 phone
    "service provider SW ver."
    SAOMC_SM-G950U_OYN_XAA_0142
    988837463139524454
    XAA/XAA/AIO
    "SIM CARD STATUS"
    Signal Strength -113dBm 0 asu
    I already contacted AT&T and they updated the IMEI information but that didn't help. I'm going to call Squaretrade tomorrow but in the meantime is there something I can do? Maybe just a bad antenna on the replacement phone?
    What mid range Android phone do you recommend for long battery and custom ROM support? Not necessarily brand new.
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:09 PM PST
    Im looking to move on from my LG V20 to get a phone with more custom ROM support, better battery life, more speed and whatever other good stuff another phone would offer. Its also just fun to change it up.
    Im not a rich guy so mid range or older high range is the way to go for me.
    Any recommendations?
    How to make photos go to the SD card by default?
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:13 AM PST
    Can you guys help me with my Glaxy s7 edge? Whenever I download or save a photo from Reddit or Twitter or Facebook or even from any website they go to my internal storage, but I want them on my SD card. I've tried moving the file (like the file Twitter or Reddit or Downloads) itself to the SD card and it worked, every photo I saved from anything went to my SD card. But then an updtae came to the "my files" app and it doesn't work anymore, if I move the file to the SD card and then save another photo it creates a new file on the internal storage and the photo goes there instead of the SD card. Please help me.
    Cases for galaxy s9+
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:02 PM PST
    Hi, For those who have owned a lot of cases in the past, can you recommend me a good, protective case for the upcoming S9+? I'm looking for protective cases while being slim and thin. I've looked everywhere. I'm kind of leaning towards Spigen or Urban Armor Gear cases. Anyone had good experiences with them? Any recommendations? Also, for those who've owned spigen cases, does the webbed pattern (inside the case) damage the back of the phone? I've read reviews it leaves permanent marks on the back of your phone. Thanks!
    Santander banking app no longer working on rooted Galaxy S6 (5.1.1) after update. Any ideas on a fix?
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:15 PM PST
    I've recently updated my mobile banking app and it no longer works with my device having root access... This is why I never update.
    Does anyone have any fixes that don't involve deleting everything off of my device? I tried unrooting and now my phone is stuck eternally booting up so I need to flash stock firmware on there, but after that, I'm assuming the issue will still be there. So if anybody has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it!
    How can I disable vibrate completely on Android 7.0 not rooted?
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 02:02 PM PST
    As above - I want to completely disable the vibrate. Is there any way I can do this? I've got 3 sound profiles available in settings: Normal, Vibrate and Silent. I have unticked the boxes where it says Vibrate: Vibration Feedback for Calls and Vibrate On Touch. My phone still vibrates when I get messages or notifications and I think also when it rings but I'm not sure about that as I can't remember.
    Any ideas?
    Missing contacts in phonebook
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:19 PM PST
    Galaxy S7, though I had this happen on my S6 previously. Some of my contacts seem to randomly disappear. This seems to happen following a software upgrade, though I'm not certain. I thought they were deleted, but out of desperation to reach a missing number, I used ok Google to dial by name and it worked! Their number still showed up like an un saved one though. What box is checked where that says "remove these from my phonebook, but not everywhere else?"
    Android work app VPN question
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:45 AM PST
    I use Island to maintain a separate copy of my work related apps. I have a copy of Cisco Anyconnect VPN app created using this method and it has the briefcase icon on the logo to indicate it is a separate 'work' app.
    Question is - if I initiate a VPN connection from this VPN app , would that cover traffic of all the apps including my non-work apps or just the work apps?
    Based on my limited testing, it appears that non-work apps uses the regular non-VPN traffic and work apps uses the VPN traffic.
    Can someone confirm this? This is very crucial as i have many apps installed on my phone each possibly making multiple background requests and I don't want to be in trouble because of these apps when I connect to the work VPN to check my emails or other work related things.
    Android phone sometimes crashes when I plug in new headphones?
    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 04:59 AM PST
    Okay, so, I have an issue with my new headphones and my phone not being compatible or something.
    I just had to buy a new pair of headphones, or earphones if you will, since my old ones gave up on me, and if I plug them in the wrong way, my phone will instantly crash and go into an endless loop of restarting until I take out its battery and pretty much force a hard restart.
    For context, my phone is a couple years old, as it is the Samsung Galaxy J5 2015 (or 2016? can't remember, sorry) and is at least one Android OS update behind since I have no space on it. It was also bought in Finland, and the headphones (earphones?) are from the Netherlands since I am currently here for work. My phone has also had some issues with its headphone jack, so any headphones don't work unless they are in the exact correct position within the jack.
    Is this just my phone deciding that its time for it to retire or is it a compatibility issue with the new headphones?
