    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:20 AM PST

The last 3 or 4 windows updates my Laptop has just decided it's time to do the update without even notifying me there's an update available. It's caused me to lose work several times depite my changing the active hours and the settings saying it should never update during that time period. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening again?

I need to run 16-bit game on my 64-bit windows 10. What are my options?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:55 PM PST

I'd like to play one of my childhood games again but I can't run it on my computer. Compatibility options didn't help at all, it just gives same error over and over again. I need some way to run 16-bit game, but I've lost hope after 2 hours of googling and trying different options. If you guys know any software what makes it possible to play this again, or even a link to a guide would be helpful.

Question regarding installing Windows 10 with Windows 7 key under peculiar circumstances

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 04:55 PM PST

I tried digging around the net to see if I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free with my Windows 7 key getting mixed results, so I figured I'd post here hoping to get a definitive answer concerning my particular situation.

I had purchased Windows 7 to run bootcamp on a Mac some years before I built a PC. When Microsoft was offering free upgrades to Windows 10 at its release, took advantage and eventually got it installed on my Mac. Unfortunately it was too unstable so I reverted back to Windows 7. Fast forward to today, I have a PC I built August 2016 and put windows 7 on it using the key from the copy I put on the Mac and removed it from the Mac.

Today I figured I'd see if I could try to upgrade to Windows 10 using my Windows 7 key. I downloaded the Windows 10 Setup media from Microsoft and ran the program. It downloaded the OS and started doing some setup but hung up on the "Making sure you're ready to install" dialog. I figured I'd just let it run, but after a half hour of nothing happening, I tried to close the setup window and now it's hung up on "Setup is cleaning up before it closes"

    I guess my questions are:

    • Can I upgrade my PC to Windows 10 without having to do a clean install? (don't want to have to deal with re-downloading all my programs again)

    • Did I mess up by interrupting the upgrade process?

    • If I can't upgrade, where can I locate all the files that the setup program downloaded so I can free up that space on my HD

    Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 10 2-in-1 laptop going to sleep too soon when laptop in "tent" or "tablet" mode

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 09:41 AM PST

    Hi there,

I have a 2-in-1 laptop I just purchased and I seem to have an issue with Power Management (or related). I set all of my power options in the settings, then in the classic control panel, and even verified in the "advanced settings", all of them match. To summarize, on battery I have the screen set to blank in 20 minutes and laptop set to sleep in 30 minutes. However, when I leave the laptop inactive in "tent" or "tablet" mode, it dims the screen in about 3-4 minutes and goes to sleep about 3 seconds later. This does NOT happen when I leave the laptop (still on battery power) in "laptop" mode.

I have no idea where to even begin looking for this. I tried setting the values in the classic control panel, rebooting, etc.

One other weird quirk. Once in a while when I swing the screen around to go into tablet mode, Windows will dim the display to the lowest setting on its own. When I bring up the display control panel it's set to the minimum, so I drag it back up to 100%. I can then turn it to laptop mode, than back to tablet mode, and it dims it all over again. This problem comes and goes, though, reboots seem to help it.

Oh, and I have power management completely disabled in the Intel display settings.

Any idea what may be going on?

    Thanks!

Note: I have a CS degree and I'm tech-savvy, so no need to simplify any explanations for me :)

    Windows 7 tweaks for TV

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:18 PM PST

My fiancée uses a 1080p TV in our living room as the monitor for her computer, because we use it both for Steam games and for watching movies. However, for general browsing and other work, text and other elements are rendered very small and are hard to see on a TV that's several feet away.

We know we can turn up the magnification on Chrome to help with the problem, but are there any tweaks we can perform to the Windows theme to help system-wide? Are there pre-built HTPC-friendly themes made specifically for this purpose?

Windows 10 (Upgrade from Windows 8) hard freezing daily

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:30 PM PST

My computer has been freezing almost daily now. I have a feeling it is related to something with Windows 10 vs 8 as my login screen changes when I reboot after a crash.

Normally, my login screen is constant and has the Cortana tips displayed. Basically what I'm used to from Windows 8 for years now.

However, after a hard freeze, where nothing responds, (num lock won't toggle, xbox controller goes into search mode for the connection) I have a login screen from Windows 10. You know, the pretty pictures that always rotate?

I upgraded from 8 to 10 about a year ago and have not had issues for a long time. But suddenly, I'm crashing fairly consistently throughout the week. I don't think it's spyware/malware, as Malwarebytes found nothing.

Any advice would be appreciated on how to solve this issue.

Windows 10 Disc Drive no longer seen by programs

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:58 PM PST

This has been going on a while and finally bothered me enough to try to solve. I can't remember what update broke it, may have been last year, but DVD drives are no longer seen by certain programs on Windows 10 systems. They are seen in File Explorer, but say from PowerISO or CDBurnerXP, they do not recognize any writable devices.

    Thoughts?

    Windows 10 worth it?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:38 PM PST

I'm buying a new laptop this week; I've had Windows 10 before, but I always had performance issues with it. Considering it was a cheap Walmart laptop, it could have been a hardware issue. So, my question is: in terms of performance in gaming and general usage, is Windows 10 efficient, or should I "downgrade" to a different version?

Windows 7 - USBs not working after windows loads up, works in BIOS

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:05 AM PST

I've tried updating in device manager via control panel which fails to load them every time and tried slimdrivers which does not detect any problems with the missing drivers.

I've had 3 driver installers tell me it's found the correct drivers but wants money first but I cannot find the separate file on it's own online.

Edit: Because Windows is the best operating system in the world /s The drivers decided to update properly after changing nothing. They updated as they should have the first 4 times in the device manager, thanks for your suggestions guys.

    Audio volume not loud enough

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:11 PM PST

Is there a way to increase volume past what is available? I maxed out the Volume Mixer, have the slider on the wire for my headphones at max, messed with the properties in audio devices tab and made sure they were all maxed, but it's still slightly too quiet for me. Any other ways to increase volume in Windows?

Latest update messed up my display settings - monitor and TV are "PNP displays" in device manager and I can't duplicate my display anymore

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:33 PM PST

I have tried searching for new drivers using the device manager, I have already reinstalled my GPU driver and I uninstalled the latest Windows updates where possible but they still show as generic PNP displays. In my GPUs settings (GTX 970) both displays show up with their correct names, but I can't get Windows to duplicate the display to my TV anymore. Also my desktop display suddenly shows up as number 2 display in the Windows display settings.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I'd be really grateful to have that annoying issue resolved!

No way to just download and notify when updates available?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:16 PM PST

HEADS-UP: Read this like I'm a happy guy, not a ranting @$$; I'm not angry, just a bit baffled.

I have Windows 10 Pro and just want to have Windows notify me when updates are available and let me decide when to install them (like on my Ubuntu build). Why is this not a simple option? I've searched around and all I see are asinine excuses for why Windows thinks it should make decisions about how I run my machine "for my own good", how to hack around in the registry (which hasn't worked for whatever reason), or to disable the update service (which is what I've done). Is this really it or has my Google-Fu failed me? Thanks folks.

    Restart problems.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 04:34 AM PST

I have a custom built gaming pc with Gigabyte Motherboard and W10 Pro v1709 wilh the latest updates on.

I have 1x Nvidia Geforce 1060 GB graphics card with 4 screens connected up to it.

I have a 500gb SSD with my Windows installed on it and everything else is on my other standard HDD.

I can click shut down and the PC will turn off and when I turn it back via the power button, it comes on fast, like it should do to my log in screen.

But when I select restart from the start menu, it will turn off fine, but when it comes back on I get what's in the photo but it shows the Gigabyte logo instead of the Windows logo and I get the same circle as in the photo here. I only get this with restart, not shutdown.

It stays on this screen for about 5 or so minutes before entering my log in screen.

Why is it taking forever to do a restart, when shutdown and turn back on with the power button is very quick?

Besides restarting without the Logitech dongle for Keyboard/Mouse and if that doesn't work, to uninstall all graphics drivers and reinstall as a fresh. But is there anything else to try?

Any ideas would be great, thanks

    XP on a Chromebook?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 01:15 PM PST

    Chromebook specs:

    Acer Chromebook R11

    Chrome OS, 32-bit (I think)

    2 GB of RAM

    10 GB of storage

    Intel processor

So I've been wondering if it is possible to run Windows XP on my Chromebook, seeing that my Chromebook is for school and has the bare minimum specs of that specific model. I haven't found any tutorials or videos on how to do this, though.

I really dislike Chrome OS and OSes after XP have higher system requirements, and I don't know anything about Linux, so XP I think would be a decent choice with the proper security. Plus, it runs well on computers with little RAM and only requires 1.5GB of storage. However, I would like to know, first, if that's possible, before I make a dumb decision like this.

Also, if anyone's wondering, the tech guys and admins at my school aren't going to give a fuck if I'm running a different OS.

Thank you to anyone who answers my question.

Windows 7 - Startup Repair triggered, nothing fixed, but nothing is actually wrong

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:33 AM PST

I haven't installed any new software or hardware in the last few months. Suddenly, when I booted my laptop, Windows Startup Repair runs. It ends up not being able to "fix the problem" so I rebooted my laptop normally. Then it runs fine. Startup Repair did not run again, and nothing goes wrong as I use the laptop.

So there is no problem at all, but it still creeps me out. It's the second / third time this happened to me. I don't find similar cases via google. Does anyone else experienced this before? What actually triggered the startup repair?

Can not access settings in windows 10 tablet/notebook!

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:03 PM PST

I made a post not long ago about my storage being too low ( still have not solved it ) but now i have a major problem which happened yesterday.

Had my tablet on and it was normal. Had firefox open and VPN connected and was downloading themes and tweaks for my jailbroken iphone.

I came back few minutes later and the detachable keyboard was going crazy, opening up tabs and mouse cursor was going haywire and stuff. So i hard rebooted. When i powered it back on, i could not access settings. I did a restore and it did not help at all. Heres what else is missing:

    Action center. Settings. Tiles.

Even when i restored i still have not gained any major storage back. Mind you this is a 2GB Ram with 32GB internal storage tablet/notebook from RCA. Bought it at walmart during black friday.

Any thoughts on what happened and what solution is there?

Creating a recovry USB - is my Windows 10 legit?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:28 AM PST

My Windows 10 laptop is running very slowly so I want to restore Windows and start again!

It is very old and I think I upgraded from XP to 10 - don't have any of the disks of documents from when I bought it.

Is there a way to check that the Windows 10 license is legit? I don't want to format the hard drive or do a recovery and then find out I can't reinstall Windows!

    Thanks.
