PSA: Having MSI Afterburner running when not gaming will kill your battery.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:19 AM PST

The first thing I did on my new laptop was to install Afterburner in order to undervolt my GPU. I was getting atrocious battery life (2 hours) even with light use and all power saving options enabled. Turns out that Afterburner was the culprit. I can now get up to 7-9 hours without issues. Seems like having Afterburner running forces the GPU to run constantly and draw power, even when not in use. Just putting it out there as I'm sure that a lot of people use it.

The best cheap laptop deals in February 2018: prices start at just £150

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:25 AM PST

Want to buy tonight: 4k Screen, UK, £600-800 ($800-1100)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:28 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    • UK, £600-800 ($800-1100)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • Best specs please

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • No importance

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • I will be plugging into a Desktop monitor when I'm at home, so screen size is NOT important to me

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • 4k amateur photo & video editing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Dota, some adventure games like Life is Strange etc. Ideally I would play Star Citizen 'one day', but that's just a pipe dream (lol)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • 4k/high res type of screen for amateur photo/video editing

    • Nice keyboard is greatly appreciated

    • 250gb SSD with added 500GB-2TB bonus drive would be really nice

    • I think 16GB RAM would be really nice

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I think I need just a low/midrange dedicated graphics card

    • I will be plugging the laptop into a desktop monitor when I'm at home probably (just an old 1080p one, but it's 27'')

    • I will be taking it to Japan permanently, so will need to look at adapter stuff

    • I am serious about purchasing either tonight or in the next 2 weeks

    • Refurbished is OK (I think, right? But, I would want to purchase a warranty probably!)

Any suggestions or comments at all are appreciated, because I know VERY little about laptops

    Thank you for reading!!!!!

Edit: I'm realising that the 4k screen is not an option at this budget, so I'm looking for the same system without that. Thank you!

Gaming Laptop - am I making the right choice?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 12:33 PM PST

I'm looking for a good gaming laptop around the 1000€ mark and found this one:

    Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBM -Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ Processor (6M Cache, up to3.50 GHz) -1000 GB HDD + 128 GB SSD -8 GB RAM -NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 4GB

Is that a good deal for 1000€ or do you have better ones to suggest? I'm looking for something that can run games like Witcher 3 at medium to high settings without fps problems.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day!

    David

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-1200€ in Austria

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16 Inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming mostly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Witcher 3 Wild Hunt GOTY (medium to high graphics) -Path of Exile (graphics don't matter, I just want to be able to play it fluently) -World of Warcraft (ultra settings) All those at 60fps or above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Having a numpad is very important but other than that I don't have any specific requirements.

MBP vs Aero vs Dell, Help!

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:00 AM PST

Hi, I am currently a student and looking for a new laptop to succeed my MBA 13 2015. I am looking for a portable , with a long battery life as well as good performance. I game a lot, mostly overwatch, however I do want to get either PUBG or fortnite soon. I want to be able to run these games on ultra/high graphics 69 FPS minimum. All models of the laptops will be top tier, however no 4K displays. The Mac will have the Radeon 560 with 4 GB, and the dell the 1050, and the aero with the 1060.These 3 laptops are my finalists, however if there is a better alternative I would happily listen to your suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to read this and have a fantastic day!

I bought the oft-recommended Acer Aspire E15 - what should I upgrade it with?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:33 AM PST

Got the $350 Aspire on Amazon. People most often recommend putting in an SSD and upping the RAM.

I'm just using this for school, social media, etc.

SSD: I ordered a Crucial SSD so I think I'm good there.

RAM: It comes with 4gb. How much do I need? Another 4gb is about $45. Does it have to be the same maker/brand to be dual channel? Do I really need dual channel? I've seen people recommend getting a faster pair of 4gb sticks for $89. But for $89 it looks like I could get 8 gb and have a total of 12 gb.

Skins: people talk about putting skins on the inside to avoid fingerprints. Any recommendations? Don't worry about it?

Anything else you would modify on this laptop out of the box?

    Thanks!

Laptops with 8th gen core I3

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 10:32 AM PST

With the recent Intel announcement of the 8th generation iteration of the mobile i3 CPU, does anyone know approximate timelines for manufacturers to start releasing laptops using this chip? I'm in the market for a new laptop, and want to go 8th gen, but don't necessarily need an i5.

Laptop for school - No gaming, only word/research

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:47 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $250, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft word and a ton of website tabs (normally have 8+)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Again, no gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as the keyboard works and it accepts WiFi and a Bluetooth mouse, don't care.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is old, like I3-330m old. It's unreliable to the point it might start hurting my grades when it decides to not fire up (like today, had to remove the battery, hold power for 1 min, etc). It just needs to get me through 2 years of grad school and then I'll buy a real laptop for gaming or build a desktop.

    Graphic Design/Gaming Laptop Recommendation

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 08:47 AM PST

Hello, like title says i need som expert recommendations, so heres my form

    The Form LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget and country of purchase: up to 2k€, Spain/Estonia/Finland

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer best Specs that can last for a while.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not the most important, but as usual the thiner/lighter, the better ;)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. This is a big problem, cause i love working on OSX, but i also like to play games and i refuse to Bootcamp or paralels desktop, so i guess Windows would have to be.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches would be perfect, but open to other sizes either bigger or smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, doing a lot of Graphic Design on web and print levels, nothing beyond that, maybe a bit of learning Video, but not my main interest, mainly use Adobe CC stuff (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign), and yes also to Gaming, mostly RPGS and MOBAS, maybe would like a bit of FPS and some AAA, but since ive never had a proper machine to run those i always played them on console.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would love to play any RPG/Moba in ultra settings, WoW, HotS, Diablo, Divinity, and been thinking into dipping into FPS, Overwatch and PUBG look fun. Everything on a casual level, well except maybe WoW and HotS as i do Raid and play Ranked matches.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not so sure what to ask here for, i imagine i would end up getting an external mouse for gaming and using my mac mouse for working.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I curently live in Tallinn, Estonia, but planning to move to Barcelona, Spain, and thats my main restriction on avilability, would rather not pay import taxes from buyin on the states.

Thank you for taking the time to go through this!

    Zenbook ux430un or dell xps13 9370

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 03:29 AM PST

Hey everyone. I live in Denmark and im looking for a new laptop. I recently ordered the Asus Zenbook ux430un on sale for 8500 DKK (1400$) with: Intel® Core™ i7-8550U processor NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2 GB grafikkort 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD

Now i dicovered that Dell offers a 1200 DKK discount on their xps 13 models so i can get the xps13 with: Intel® Core™ i5-8250U processor 8 GB LPDDR3 1866 MHz RAM Intel UHD graphics 256 GB SSD

    For 9000 DKK

The zenbook sounds like the better deal but i have heard much better of the XPS than the Zenbook. So my question is, whats the better deal?

I want to buy an Acer Aspire 5 A517-51G in France. Will adding a M.2 SSD void the warranty?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 05:02 AM PST

This model comes with a i5-8250u, 8GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA MX150, 17.3" IPS Display and a 1TB HDD. So, I want to add an SSD into the mix. From what I've seen online (and please correct me if I'm wrong), I'm pretty sure on the backside it only has an access to the SATA 3 pocket which is already in use by the HDD. The M.2 slot that would accomodate a SSD is on the inside, probably needing to remove all the backside in order to access it. Will doing this void the warranty?

Also out of curiosity, the 8GB of RAM is made of what? How many slots are in total ? Integrated in the motherboard? 1x8GB 2x4GB?

    Laptop suggestions ~1k or less

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 08:46 PM PST

Hey guys, Im going to be accepting a short contract (3ish months) away from home and im looming to pick up a laptop to step in for the desktop im leaving behind. Most of my usage will be music and video streaming, some non super graphics intense gaming (dota 2), and some ps4 remote play.

After this 3 months I will probably end up using it as a dedicated media streaming machine in my living room.

Any suggestions for a cheapish laptop that will tide me over for a few months?

    HP Omen sound problems

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 02:40 AM PST

This is the computer in question: https://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Omen-15-7700HQ-GTX-1060-Max-Q-Full-HD-Laptop-Review.236264.0.html

So I'm having sound issues. If I have headphones plugged in, and run any program producing sound. VLC, Chrome, Spotify etc, it starts with a low static ambient sound.

Usually when hitting play it takes 2-5 seconds before the sound starts. This means a YT vid will play normally for 2-5 sec with no sound til my computer starts playing it.

Sometimes the static will start but the sound never starts. It's just quiet.

Plugging headphones in and out doesnt work. It happens for both my speakers and my headphones (I just dont hear the static/ambient when on speakers)

All the drivers are up to date, I even let all the HP programs install.

    I've followed these steps https://support.hp.com/lt-en/document/c04973149

    but no cigar.

    Any1 had the same problem?

    Suggestion on ThinkPad x200

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:52 PM PST

Hey everyone, I have been thinking of getting the libreboot x200 from minifree.org.

As I understand it, it's a fairly old laptop. I don't really need it for much. At the most, I'll use it to watch movies or Netflix.

It runs trisquel linux os and has 4 gib ram 160 hdd.

I'm not gonna be using it for much, will this work for my need? Is there anything I need to think about??

I personally love the open source software and privacy. Which is the main reasons I am getting this. On top of being cheap.

    Thanks!

    Where to buy battery replacements?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:04 PM PST

I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB 2AJ. I guess the J stands for Japan since that is where I got it.

The battery is now dead (after 5 years of use). But the only replacements I find seem to be OEMs? Something called Green Cell.

Anyhow where is the best online place to buy batteries? I live in Singapore if that makes any difference.

Did I buy a good laptop?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:12 PM PST

So I recently purchased this Asus Q405UA and had a lemon. I am now pretty paranoid if the laptop is truly good or not. I am just a student and need it for basic tasks but for the day I had it before I exchanged it would slow tremendously with basic functions like checking email. I thought the specs (aside from the HD) were pretty good. Did I get a good machine? Thank you!

CPU upgrade on hP G62 144dx

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:49 PM PST

    Hey Reddit,

I use my old laptop only for school (mainly Word, Google Chrome, etc). It is taking a long time to open and use my PERRLA (Word extension) and is rather annoying. I was wondering if a CPU upgrade would help?

    Specs:

    I3 330m 8GB PC3-10700 RAM Windows 10 (ugh)

Any help is appreciated. I was thinking a I5 540 or I7 640. Both are around $25 or so.

I would buy a new laptop but don't want to spend $300-$400 for something I'm just writing papers on. If there is a cheaper option (say <$200, I'm all ears).

    Thanks Reddit!

Edit: It actually froze with 7 tabs open in Chrome while writing this.....twice. Common happening with more than 5 tabs.

Looking for a cheap gaming laptop

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:00 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally I'd like it to be around $700 NZD ($500 USD) or under, maybe that's too unreasonable?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, they don't have to be great, but ideally I'd like to run Wii U and PS3 emulators, as well as games like Mirror's Edge Catalyst and The Witcher 3 (At lowest settings)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing and Gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As above, I'd like to run Wii U and PS3 emulators, as well as games like Mirror's Edge Catalyst and The Witcher 3 (At lowest settings)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically what is the cheapest laptop that will run recent games.
