Windows 10 Home will not activate after fresh install of Windows. Microsoft support did not help.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 01:02 PM PST

So a couple weeks back, my RAM failed, and I replaced it. The new RAM worked properly but my computer still was acting a little funny, so I did a clean install of Windows off of the Windows USB that I used to install the OS in the first place.

At that point it said that Windows needed to be activated. I entered the product key that came with the USB that I used to install the OS when I built my system, and it told me that "The Product key you entered didn't work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one. (0xc0000022)"

I then called Microsoft Tech support and explained the situation. The agent had me run "slui 4" in the Windows Run prompt to try to activate it over the phone. However, it would never actually load the code that I needed to give to the agent for him to activate my computer.

So then he generated a new product code for me, and it too failed. At this point he then told me it was likely I had a corrupt system file, and would need to do a fresh install, and then to use the product key that he had just given me afterwards.

To do this, I went through the Windows Defender Security Center "Fresh Start" to do a clean install. Upon installation, I am still having the exact same issue. Neither the product key he gave me, nor my old one is working.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am at a loss.

    Thank you!

EDIT: Upon running Show Key Plus, the "Installed Key" shows as the key that came with my USB drive. However, for the "OEM Key" it says "OEM key not present in the firmware". Not sure if this helps.

Is there a way to have windows treat a folder with an extension as a file to be opened by a specific program?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 08:29 AM PST

I have a lot of folders that end in a ".d". Like "example.d".

A program I have recognizes the .d and opens the folder and its contents for processing. Is there a way to have Windows treat the .d folder as a file - such that I can double click on the folder and have it open my program?

Is there a way to disable truncating filenames in Windows 10?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 05:33 AM PST

Like if you have a filename that's "generic long name here.pdf" but Windows shows it as "generic long name..." instead. Is there a way to stop it from doing that without having to pretend you're going to rename it to see the rest?

Newest windows update hardlocked me boot up

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 06:29 PM PST

Decided to afk from computer and go to school, leaving the newest windows update to be carried out by the windows update manager. However it is trapped in a permanent loop of "restoring previous version of windows" restarting and repeat. Everyone says that you would get a "enter recovery mode" option after a few times but it hasn't shown up for me. I tried to us the windows key USB that we had but when that is plugged in I can't even reach BIOS menu, just a black screen. I unplugged USB and now I don't even reach bios most of the time. (1 in about 12 restarts I see BIOS menu) Where did I go wrong and how can i fix it?

How to prevent windows from auto-installing a new keyboard layout?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 05:10 PM PST

My windows is PT-BR, but I own a mechanical keyboard and it is english international.

For some reason windows keeps auto installing the Brazilian ABNT keyboard layout and then setting this layout as the active one. This messes all the /.,;'][ keys.

And it won't let me remove it right away. I have to always add the Brazillian ABNT before removing so it will disappear from the tray icon.

Is there any way to lock those settings?

Is it possible to manually disable power from USB ports?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 09:02 AM PST

Hi, so I have a couple of LED light strips that are connected to my PC through USB, and I was wondering if I could disable them by disabling power from the USB. Is that possible to do with Windows 10?

All mice stopped working (windows 10)

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:54 PM PST

I'm at a loss and Microsoft support was far from helpful. I've tried multiple mice and USB slots but for some reason windows won't find or let me use a mouse.

Tried rebooting in safe mode and everything like that. Currently trying a restore point to see if that does anything

Where can I find the lastest W10 ISO without using the MediaCreationTool?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 12:06 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a laptop with W10 installed on it's HDD.

Now I want to replace that HDD with a SSD and reinstall W10 clean on that drive.

The W10 origins from a W8 license that the laptop vendor upgraded. Sadly they didn't note the key anywhere, but I read that this wouldn't be a problem since Microsoft can somehow read the W8 key from the BIOS if I understood it correctly.

Now the problem is that I need a W10 ISO. The laptop itself isn't connected to the internet, I wanted to download the W10 ISO on my W7 Desktop.
I tried the MediaCreationTool from the sidebar but somehow that doesn't let me choose where the ISO should go. It asks for 8GB on the C drive, but I don't have that much space on there.'

Is there any legit source to download the latest W10 ISO to my Desktop PC? Or do I have to hook up the laptop to the internet to download the Windows tool there, since there would be enough space on the C drive on that machine.

Debugging a Windows app running in explorer.exe

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST

    Hi,

I am not an expert on the Windows internals and so I will try to give a little context to what I am trying to accomplish:

I am presented with a client app that is not a .exe. It is a simple icon on the desktop that has its own set of properties. When double-clicked it opens an explorer.exe window, in which the client is asked to login using AD credentials. Upon authentication the user is presented with a set of data sources, which they can then browse.

My goal is to figure out a problem that exists between two of the databases. Database A contains raw data which is related to data in Database B. To get a complete dataset we need data from both databases. Some object UIDs from database A are different from the relevant object UIDs referenced in database B. Yet the application is functional.

As a first line of inquiry I have listened to packets using Wireshark and have analysed various streams. I can deduct that the client is interacting with an IIS application. Various POST and GET calls are made to the various resources searched for by the client. Here is the disconnect: when the client searches for a particular record with UID = 'abc1234', the software will make a request to the server using this UID - this would seem to query database A. The software also makes another query, using a new UID that first appears in this query, call it 'xyz098'. This would be a query to database B. Then the whole dataset is assembled and presented to the user.

I need to figure out how this new 'xyz098' UID is obtained.

The client app seems to be an XML/HTML/JS app running inside explorer.exe (is that even possible?). I am wondering if there is not some piece of Javascript that translates the initial UID requested by the user (abc123) into the second UID (xyz098).

After spending hours with Wireshark I am now trying to debug the application using x64dbg. I wish to catch the particular function call that makes a POST request using the previously unseen 'xyz098' UID. Yet I don't really know where to start as I have only basic understanding of Windows internals.

    Question on Windows 10 purchase.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 07:39 AM PST

    Hello,

I have legal copies of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and am running Windows 10 at home because of the the free upgrade.

I am getting ready to build a new PC and I believe the free upgrade period has gone away or is going away soon. So I guess I wish to get a legal copy of Windows 10 for my gaming rig. I want a legal copy so I can add and remove drives and change configuration with as little trouble as possible. I would also like a clean install. I am not a fan of Windows 10 because it seems to be more for touch pads but I can work with it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what version I should purchase and the best legal way to acquire said version? This will be a gaming machine with some photoshop. I do not have a touch screen nor do I want one.

    Thank you.

Unable to create accented characters on Windows

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 10:40 AM PST

Hey everyone, I've had this PC on windows 10 for a few years now and throughout its life ive never been able to use it for work, mostly because i cannot create accented characters. I've set me keyboard to english international and enabled a separate keyboard for all other languages id need, in descending order, in my control panel. No matter what i try or how many different methods i use, i can never create accented characters in any program outside of MSWord. Is this a problem with my physical keyboard, or am i just doing this all wrong?

Ive tried, rightalt, leftalt(with international english keybaord) the shift codes, and tried to locate the onscreen accent keyboard for specific languages with no luck. Id prefer not to have to click the onscreen keyboard every few keystrokes but id need to settle for it at a minimum for the time being.

Thanks for help and advice in advance!

Win7 reinstall: iso file + wiping boot HDD?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2018 11:46 PM PST

I'm working with a 128GB SSD with three partitions, that dual boots into Win7 and Ubuntu. It was configured using Ubuntu/Gparted, but I want to wipe the entire thing and fresh install Win7.

The product key is for a pre-installed OEM Win7, however, and ISO files for Win7 are no longer available last I checked - anyone know where I can get one and do the deed?
