    3 fried hard drives??

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 07:14 PM PST

    Operating System

    Windows 10

Model of HDD, SSD, or other storage device

    Western Digital 2TB, 1TB

    Data recovery budget

    1500

    Physical damage

    I don't know

    Importance of data

It'd be nice to recover this data

    Active Backups

No active backups other than redundant files across portable hard drives

    S.M.A.R.T. Status

    N/A

    Description of problem

I put a used PSU in my rig, my friend said it might not work but didn't say it could blow up and spread metal dust all over my floor. I can't 100% remember if all three hard drives were connected at the time, I know at least one was, but after replacing the motherboard and PSU I find that all 3 drives do not show up in Windows, only the SSD which was connected at the time of the blowout is still functional and booting up.

What I've tried so far to recover the data

    Tried nothing

Close to tears over this Win10 connectivity issue

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 01:36 AM PST

Hi guys, please don't judge me over almost crying over this first world problem.

My desktop computer (Win10) can't connect to the internet. It's the only one in my network with this issue. I keep getting invalid IP configuration, and to my noob knowledge, my PC basically doesn't have an IP address or a gateway.

I've done pretty much almost everything that I or Google can suggest, which entails...

    • The usual resetting of router & modem
    • Restarting the PC
    • Updating my wireless adapter drivers, and deleting them
    • Using cmd to do ipconfig /release or renew, which is unsuccessful because "media disconnected"
    • Resetting the winsock
    • Clean booting
    • Configuring my network adapter, both channel width values are set to Auto by default
    • Using the troubleshooter
    • Network reset
    • Rolling back drivers and updates
    • Manually entering an IPV4 address
    • Forgetting the network and then reconnecting

I do not have an ethernet connection where my PC is and it would require some drilling and routing for that to happen. Perhaps my winsock registry is corrupted, but I will have to find those files in the morning. I'm hoping you guys might be able to think of any other possible fixes for this. Thanks in advance!

edit: Some details I forgot to mention, last Windows update was on the 13th for me and this problem started yesterday. My wireless card is a PCIe.

edit 2: added another thing to the solutions tried list

    Problems running Oldschool Runescape

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:33 AM PST

    Hello r/techsupport ,

I'll start by prefacing that OSRS has CPU based graphics due to the coding.

I built my pc but am having issues getting 50 FPS(max from osrs) and I can't understand why. My components are more than capable of achieving this. I have even tried working with a developer of an official 3rd party client and he couldn't help me so here I turn to you in hopes that you can help me resolve this!

I have an i7 7700k processor Any other specs I'm unsure of at the moment but will be off work soon and will be able to check when I get home.

    Thank y'all!!

    Can't read chat on twitch.tv

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:40 AM PST

I'm not sure if this is the correct subreddit for this. If not, I would appreciate if someone directed me to the subreddit that this should be posted on.

The chat is completely blank. It looks like this. I've tried clearing my cache/cookies and running in incognito. Popping out the chat doesn't work, and I've tried closing all my add-ons. I've tried a different browser as well, so the issue doesn't seem to be with the browser. I'm only having this issue on one computer, and it's not linked to my account. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

Anyone have experience with fiber? Got a business line that keeps cutting out randomly and the company is giving us the run around, just looking for some general support techniques.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 11:14 AM PST

So this is line that's advertised as a 1gbps package. We've never had numbers better than 360 Mbps. The speed is not so much the issue but we're getting intermittent drops that can really effect business. The line will be used moderately or even completely unused and will just go down randomly.

The techs that have been out have no numbers to support their claims, but they have said the reason is (could be): too many people on the connection (we have 20 devices max), apple computers (last I knew, tcp/ip was tcp/ip), bad networking equipment (has been replaced), bad cables (has been replaced), too many sessions (not sure how to prove it's not this). Because it's AT&T, they have a policy where you can't use third party hardware. This means that we're stuck with their shitty gateway until we can prove that it's the gateway's fault.

What kinds of numbers should we be looking at to diagnose fiber? Will it have the same stats about things like signal strength in the back end somewhere? Are there other stats we should become familiar with? For example, how do we tell if there are too many people on the line, if it's possible? How would we ask for those numbers from someone that can provide them? Any secrets you can impart on how to deal with their customer service? I feel strongly that this is not a problem of anything internal especially since the techs aren't able to come up with anything reasonable and real to prove their theories.

Updated Geforce experience, KB+MS no longer works

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 09:37 PM PST

so for the past 2 hours i've been trying to solve this issue with windows not wanting to recognize my keyboard and mouse. i updated geforce experience, my computer had a mini-seizure. personally the way it was acting i was sure it was going to blue screen but it didn't. it just ended up freezing and then that's when my keyboard and mouse (razer deathstalker, and Corsair m65) stopped working. they work in the BIOS, and i've gone back to default settings in the BIOS as well. that didn't do anything. i also did a system restore that was 2 days old, and that didn't do anything either. and i just got finished taking the CMOS battery out and putting it back in.

i tried other keyboards and mouses. they have the same issue, none of them work. the only thing that currently works that is also USB is my logitech G633's.

EDIT 1: should add that if i plug in my keyboard or mouse, that the lighting on them turn on normally, but attempting to use them results in no input from either of them. moving the mouse doesn't move the cursor, and pressing any keys on the keyboard doesn't do anything either. and if i unplug one of them, the other still plugged in will light up for a few seconds then turn back off.

Mom got tricked by scam online

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 09:07 PM PST

Hey guys. Problem is this in a nutshell...

Mom doing research on paper, going to sites I assume... pop-up comes and says "critical alert!" and told to go to "go2patch.com" or something along those lines... she gives remote access for a bit, but realizes while she's on the phone that it's a scam since the caller asked for her credit card information after asking her name.

Should I consider everything on her laptop jeopardized?

Should I also consider everything else in the house that's a computer jeopardized or just her laptop?

Is financial information (we buy things on amazon on her laptop sometimes, we share one family account and all have our different credit/debit card info on one account) in danger?

I tried to run some AVs but I figured since she already allowed remote access it was too late.

My mom has a lot on her plate going back to school and I just wanna help alleviate this in any way I can. For now I've just told her to call her credit card companies and change her passwords.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks much.

Instagram was hacked. Submitted an email and now they want to see a photo of my face. Is this legit?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 12:02 PM PST

    So, stressful day today

I had my Instagram hacked for some odd reason. I didn't realise there was a two-way authentication so it's partly my fault. They changed the username, password and email, so I basically had no power over it. I managed to submit a form to Instagram help from the app itself, and quickly received an email from info++aazqfrmrs4xplk@support.facebook.com. The email detailed asking for a photo of my face with a code written on it, as well as my username etc etc, you get the jist. It seems strange given they detail that regardless of whether the profile has your face or not, they still need it for verification? Can anyone tell me the legitimacy of it, if they've done it before?

    My laptop does not run

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:04 PM PST

    Final Edit: Solved!!

I somehow fix it. I wanted to access to advanded settings on BIOS (mine is insydeh2o), the I press (tab+fn)*3 times and save changes wich restart my computer and it started automatically an autorepair proccess wich ended up solving the issue.

Oh man even if it was pure luck I'm so happy I could fix it hahaha.

First of all, I dont speak/write Shakespeare's language pretty well so I apologize for my grammar mistakes beforehand.

I'll try to be clear as possible saying step by step how I (possibly) fucked up my laptop.

    1. I don't know if this was the cause but I installed a game wich needed a crack, the crack was used by other people and I didn't see anyone complaining about it so I tought it was good to go.
    2. I closed the game and after 1 minute or so it began to freeze. It was constantly like 3 seconds frozen and runing another 3 seconds.
    3. I opened the taskmanager to check the ram, the cpu or the disk but nothing on the data seems wrong.
    4. It was almost impossible to turn off my laptop so I decided to turn it off with the power button.
    5. Restart pc. Acer logo pops up and goes to another the screen with the system charge symbol. Till this point nothing looks wrong but the laptop doesn't move from the last screen I mencioned so I tried restarting it again but it was the same so I decided to let it be to see if it was just being slow for turn it of so abruptly.
    6. After 15/20min the screen goes black but the laptop is still runing. I did the same a couple times but nothing happened.
    7. I also tried to reset it by pressing f8/f11 when acer but nothing happened.

My laptop is an Acer e5-571g and is almost 4 years old.

It would be great if anyone knows what is the problem and how to solve it. I dont really want to spend 50€ on a tech hahaha.

Edit: I can access to the BIOS pressing f2 but Im not sure what to do next, restoring it to default would end up erasing win10 too right?

Dying PSU, Dying GPU or Dying MOBO?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 12:38 AM PST

    Hello.

As of today, my videocard started to act weird. It spins fast for like 20 seconds and then it suddenly stops for about 4-5 seconds before spinning again for 20 seconds, rinse and repeat. It does this even tho it's at 90+ Celsius at 100% fan speed so this rules out the "fans spin at a certain temperature feature".

I uninstalled my current driver and my GPU fan spun at 100% nonstop.

I installed it at my second PCIE slot but it still does this thing.

I rolled back on my drivers, but my GPU's fans still stop spinning.

Is this a sign of a dying GPU, a bad PSU or bad MOBO?

I'm scared if it's my GPU because I wouldn't be able to replace it with the currently inflated GPU prices.

Looked at Porn on Company Wifi, Please Help!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:43 PM PST

So I was extremely horny at work the other day and decided to go to the bathroom to relieve myself. I looked at a few porn sites on my personal IPhone. I then realized with horror that I was still connected to company WiFi, which my phone had probably logged me in automatically. What do you think the chances are that this activity was logged, someone in IT actually looks at the logs, and this somehow gets back to me?

    Some further detail/caveats:

    1. I'm not sure I actually accessed any nsfw sites, since when I tried to, it said "server unavailable" and I couldn't actually view the page. The WiFi reception probably wasn't good enough in the bathroom to actually pull up anything. If I didn't actually pull up the page, would he site still get logged?
    2. After this I searched for a few nsfw pics through google images. Unlike the other sites, I was actually able to reach the page. Would my search history get recorded or just the website www.google.com?
    3. I work at a small university with about 100 - 150 staff. I was logged on to a separate network reserved for staff and faculty, in which I was logged in using credentials (username and password).
    4. I am in very good standing with my boss and and good relations and friendships with a lot of the other staff. So nobody would have reasons to look through my internet activity, unless IT does that regularly anyway.
    5. The IT guys are pretty friendly and cool, and they know who I am. We're not best friends or anything but I've had good experiences with them in the past.
    6. I've been at the same job for almost a year and this is the first time I've done this. It goes without saying I'm never doing it again.

I've been literally worried sick over this the past few days (nausea every day due to anxiety). I love my job and I don't want to lose it over one bad decision.

New Hard Rive, Exact Same SMART Error

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:50 AM PST

Hey all, I have been receiving the SMART Hard Disk Error blue screen message on starting up for over 2 years now. I just replaced my hard drive (which needed to happen anyway) and I got teh exact same message upon booting up again. It says Hard Disk 6 (30C). I ran the quick test and it passed. I'm surprised considering it's brand new.

The following screen says 1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure.

    Failing Drive: SATA5 Failing Attribute: # 00

So TL;DR, had hard drive failure messages, got new hard drive, same messages. Any advice?

What is the easiest way of creating a Shared Company Resource Scheduler?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:43 AM PST

    Hello there,

I've been tasked with creating a Resource Scheduler. It would be ideal if this could be done using O365, possibly controlled using an AD Group. I would like it to work like this:

A user would have access to a shared calendar. They can view this and see what times/dates are available for booking out this resource. This resource I'm referring to is a Quality Control member of staff - he reviews work if/when required.

So let's say John finishes some work which he needs reviewing. He would check out this shared calendar and make an appointment in it, this would send an email to the quality control member of staff and it's then up to him to decide if he wants to approve/reject it or propose a new time. If approved, it would need to be entered in the calendar so that everyone else in the company can see this too so they don't try and book the same dates/times.

Hope that makes sense. What is the absolute easiest way of setting this up?

    Thanks!

Power Saving Mode, sometimes continuous reboots

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:41 AM PST

    Hi redditors,

Recently whilst using my computer it automatically turned itself off and everytime I've gone to boot the screen states it is in power saving mode. I have disconnected all cords, gpu and ram. I have also tried using onboard graphics but the screen is still black. I'm trying to narrow it down to ehat component maybe faulty. I have a 1000w psu and a r9 290x. I have noticed that the middle fan on my gpu is not spinning. I'm not entirely sure if it's due to low load or malfunction. Psu makes a whiney noise also. Sometimes when the computer boots it will restart itself over and over again. I've tried using a laptop to hdmi into monitor and it does pick up the picture.

Any help would be grateful as an avid user of the pc I'd like to order new component for whatever the faulty part is asap.

    Thanks

How does paying for WiFi work?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 09:37 PM PST

Say, for example, I buy a router. Do I need to pay a company to give me WiFi? Do I need to pay amounts of money at certain intervals e.g. monthly? Can I have WiFi whilst paying only once? I do not particularly understand the concept of Ethernet, but is that a viable alternative to suit my needs?

I very recently bought Dell's Inspiron 15 5577. And it is marvelous for a budget laptop, it ran GTA 5 at top settings FPS with no lag or rendering mistakes and used all the available 4 gigs of video memory. But when I tried to play Fortnite, it lagged, hung and sometimes objects didn't render at all (everything was on medium settings) and I even crippled the FPS to 30. I know it's not a internet related issue because the ping is always 10 to 15 ms. I would contact the Dell's system support but I really have nothing else to back up my claim apart from information based off of games I play and their tech guy probably won't know what I'm talking about too! And my pal consistently gets 60 fps on medium settings and he uses i3 5th gen and Radeon m330.

Tower front Headphone jack stopped working.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:19 AM PST

So i've been using my headphones plugged into the front headphone jack of my pc tower. Recently I bought some little speakers and would use them for youtube and stuff but still use my plugged in headphones for gaming.

But thenn a few days ago the front jack stopped working and now the headphones only work when plugged into the speakers. This just messes my whole system up for how I hang my headphones and I think the audio might be a little worse.

Any advice on getting that front jack working while the speakers are plugged into the back?

G Sync not picking up 170Hz

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:18 AM PST

I have an Acer Predator XB271H monitor, which has an overclock in its menu to 170Hz. I have 2x 1080ti in SLI. I run a 60Hz second monitor. Everything was good. I had to limit Overwatch to 169fps for streaming/recording in OBS to prevent problems with playback stutter.

Then I ran into some issues recently with the graphics driver crashing, reason unknown, but it seems like there's a conflict somewhere. I uninstalled (with DDU) and reinstalled graphics driver, tried older versions, same with Windows updates and BIOS. I even reinstalled Win 10. It's running comparatively better now....

But, I can no longer get 170Hz on the monitor. Nvidia Control Panel has the option for 170Hz refresh rate, but when I select it the Acer monitor just turns black. It's all good at 144Hz. I've now had to limit Overwatch at 143fps.

I know it's not a huge issue, but I can't figure out what's changed. Any input appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Internet Problems

    Posted: 23 Feb 2018 03:15 AM PST

All right so I've been having this same problem for about a couple months now and its gotten to the point where it needs to be solved.

Basically at random points my internet connection on my laptop will either drop to basically 0.1 kbs or disconnect entirely, this can happen every 5 or so seconds or sometimes every half an hour or so.Sometimes it also fails to reconnect to the internet and shows that there are none in the area. I have no idea what could cause this and everything that I've looked at online hasnt helped and I have tried the guide here on techsupport about lost internet connect w/o it working. Has had this problem over a couple different isp's/modems/routers with the same problem happening and im the only one that's connected to them that have this problem

Smart tv to laptop via hdmi screen randomly blacks out for a second.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2018 11:24 PM PST

I have two smart tv connected to my laptop. Other one is Sony and works great but the other one is Philips which has this issue. The screen randomly goes black for a second and then comes back on. During these black outs the sounds are still playing thou. This happens very randomly regardles what I'm doing. (Playing games, browsing internet, or just doing nothing.) I have tried several hdmi cables and no avail. I also connected this tv to my Wii U console and it doesn't have this issue. I have the latest graphics drivers on my laptop and the latest firmware on the tv. I've tried different hdmi ports on the tv but no luck. Also tried different refresh rates and resolutions. My laptop has Geforce GTX 765 Mobile and Intel HD Graphics 4600. The Philips tv model is 22PFL5614H. By the way in my device manager there are two general PUP monitors for some reason. Oh, and I'm on Windows 10. I was previously on Windows 8.1 and this issue was on there too. I've tried googling this for weeks now but nothing seems to work.
