So I reset my computer, right? (Windows 10 question)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 06:38 PM PST

I was wondering how I can get windows 10 back, if I can, because I recently factory reset my pc and it reverted me back to windows 8.1. I chose to not keep my old files, just in case that's the reason. Is their any way I can get windows 10 back without having to pay for it again? Thanks in advance

Should I be worried? "RPC Unavailable" error after "windows explorer" firewall request.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 12:36 PM PST

Earlier today, I encountered an error message when I opened up Windows Explorer asking about the firewall access. Why would Windows Explorer need internet access? I closed it and restarted it, and it wouldn't start, instead i got an "RPC Unavailable" error message. I am on my own computer at home. Should I be worried? Is there a possibility that I am being hacked?

Will most/all new applications still work on Windows 7?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 11:55 AM PST

I've been using Windows 10 for a while now, and I've decided that I like 7 a bit more.

The only thing holding me back from downgrading to it, is whether or not all applications made in the last few years/for Windows 10 will work on Windows 7 (aside from Windows store stuff)

    Will they?

How do I stop 'NTFS Master File Table' from reading random files on my storage drive?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 03:02 PM PST

My storage HDD has been spinning up randomly when I open files that are on a different drive. With Resource Monitor, I've determined a common factor with each spin up: system or explorer is reading a file called D:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table) . D is the HDD that gets spun up btw. Along side with that file, some other files are also being read but that part of it is seemingly random.

Can we help saving the environment just by switching browsers?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 02:02 PM PST

tldr: If you are using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, you are contributing to the world's wasteful use of energy that's equivalent to the annual power usage of an entire country of Hungary, Ecuador, or Azerbaijan. Switch to Microsoft Edge (Windows) or Apple Safari (Mac) to reduce the world's carbon footprint.

Based on this report https://wearesocial.com/special-reports/digital-in-2017-global-overview there are almost 3.8 billion of internet users, with around 45% of them are computers. That means there are 1.7 billions of computers online in the world

Based on this report https://www.netmarketshare.com/browser-market-share.aspx, 59% of those are using Google Chrome to browse the internet, followed by 13% on Firefox. Therefore, there are 1 billion people using Chrome and 221 million people using Firefox on their computer.

Based on this testing https://microsoftedge.github.io/videotest/2017-12/, it is proven that Google Chrome uses 30% more energy to finish the same task than Microsoft Edge, while Firefox manages a whooping 70% in the same scenario.

The computer that was used in testing was a Microsoft Surface Book, which based on this specification sheet https://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Microsoft-Surface-Book-Core-i5-940M-Convertible.153423.0.html, has 78 Wh battery. From the previous report, it was reported that Microsoft Edge lasted 16:41, Google Chrome lasted 12:54, and Mozilla Firefox lasted 9:51 on the very same computer. That means, Edge uses 4.6 W on average, Chrome uses 6.1 W, and Firefox uses 7.9 W for doing the same controlled task. There is a gap of 1.5 W between Edge and Chrome, and 3.3 W between Firefox and Edge.

Important to understand that those numbers were all acquired using the efficient low-voltage mobile chip (Intel Core i5-6300U) with 15 W rated TDP used in their reference laptop. The effect is much more apparent on older and/or higher-voltage chips. The average desktop computer chip like the Core i5-7500 is rated at 65W TDP, more than 4 times as much, and the previous generation of Core i5-2400 (2011) is rated at 95 W, or 6 times as much. For my calculation, I would assume that all computers have the efficient 15 W chip as the Surface Book. https://ark.intel.com/products/97123/Intel-Core-i5-7500-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz https://ark.intel.com/products/52207/Intel-Core-i5-2400-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_40-GHz

Therefore, if all Chrome users switch to Edge, the world would save 1500 Megawatts per hour, and if all Firefox users would switch to Edge, the world would save an additional 730 Megawatts per hour. They would total to 2230 Megawatts per hour, or 19.534.800 Megawatts per year. Based on this data, it is roughly the same amount of power used to power the entire country of Hungary, Ecuador, or Azerbaijan https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_electricity_consumption

Note that this calculation was done on computers based on Microsoft Windows operating system, and the Edge browser is also only available on, and built-in, Windows. However, there is a similar trend in macOS-based computers in regards to the built-in Apple Safari browser as seen on this report here https://www.theverge.com/2015/4/10/8381447/chrome-macbook-battery-life

    Start menu button not working.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 01:24 AM PST

Hey folks looking for some help. My start menu stopped working 2 days ago on my windows 10 PC. I managed to fix it by adding an additional account to log into and log back out of and it seemed to fix it. However the issue reoccured so I decided to just fresh install windows 10 and the issue has happened again! Not really sure what is going on can anyone give me a few pointers for a permanent fix? Thanks in advance

Computer having random crashes after creators update

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:19 PM PST

Ever since that big update (that took like 2 hours to do), my computer has at random been crashing and rebooting. I'll just be watching Youtube or playing a game when suddenly screen goes black and I hear my computer starting up. It's very frustrating, especially when I'm playing something online and can get banned for being afk. I have no way to tell what's causing it, as like I said it happens at completely random times, but recently it's been doing it at least once a day.

Is anyone else having this issue? How do I fix this?

    Bluetooth disabled by admin.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:40 PM PST

So my school system was kind enough to give each student a computer for the year, and while that sounds great, I'm just about ready to rant at these people. Aside from the PC's running version 1607 instead of the latest 1709, GlobalProtect being a bitch with the library WiFi, and Dolby Audio completely ruining the audio experience, I have one major issue.

The admins have decided that the Bluetooth Driver shouldn't be enabled, and that is frustrating me because my best earphones are Bluetooth only. Is there any way for me to enable Bluetooth as a standard user? I have a screw driver and am willing to do whatever it takes. BTW I can't boot from a USB drive (which also annoys me).
