How is the acer swift 3 display compared to macBook air?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 04:17 AM PST

I've been thinking about getting the Acer Swift 3 but heard the display isn't great and I already own a mac and the display is pretty glossy. I want the swift 3 for school, music production, light gaming and watching movies and tv. So how is the display of the swift 3 compared to the MacBook Air?

No idea how to clean my laptop

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:46 PM PST

Have had my laptop since late 2012, and have never cleaned the fans inside of it, or anything inside of it really. Laptop has started to overheat a tad, and the fan(s) is/are rather loud so I think I gotta clean it up a bit.

Would someone here know how I could go about doing this? Thanks in advance

    XPS 15 for light gaming

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:34 PM PST

Does anyone here have fhd version of the dell xps with 1050ti? How it is for light/moderate gaming? Does older and lighter games such as CS: GO and let say Skyrim run on it decently? Also does it heat much when under load, would there be noticable thermal throttling when playing?

    MacBook buying suggestions

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:34 AM PST

Since it's my first post here, I'm sorry if this is not the right place for the question, so please excuse me if so.

Now, after all my life being a Windows user, I've finally decided to jump to MacOS. I'm a web/UI designer and recently I started to learn web development. So the things I'll be using mostly are AdobeCC, Affinity designer, sketch and invision studio when it gets released. Development side- I'm currently learning the front-end side, so it's HTML/CSS/Js, but I plan to jump to back-end too, and also probably react, vue or angular (it won't be soon, but they seem pretty interesting, so I'll definitely give them a go)

So, the main question - since budget is not so big for a new MBP, I'm looking to buy used MacBooks, and the models that I've set my sights on are 2014/2015 15" 16GB Ram without dedicated gpu. What do you think, will it do the job for a few years, do I definitely need the 16GB ram and can I get away only with the intel graphics? These questions may seem dumb for you, but as I said, I have no experience with macs, and I really don't know how well are these configurations performing or aging. I'm open to suggestions for other MacBook models too.

Thanks in advance, and if here's not the right place for this thread, please tell me where to ask. :)

Will daily usage drastically shorten my laptop's lifespan ?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 05:16 AM PST

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 700, I'm a student so I use it daily at an average of 7 hours a day. Will this damage it in the long run or shorten its life span ? I need this to survive four years.

    Specs:

i7-6700HQ, GTX 950M, FHD IPS screen, 45 W battery, 1 TB 5400 rpm HDD, and 16 GB RAM.

I'm also running Windows 10 Home and I heard it accumulates bugs and breaks down after a while, not sure if that's true.

Buying Help: Budget laptop for my parents

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:27 AM PST

    Hi everyone.

My parent's current desktop is on its last leg. My dad is considering getting two laptops in place of just having a desktop. All they really do is check Facebook, browse the web, and watch YouTube so they don't need anything crazy. Their budget is around 400-500 per.

I was thinking a chromebook would fit their needs. I thought this would be a good fit for them

ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 with Intel Core m3, 12.5-Inch Touchscreen, 64GB storage and 4GB RAM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5G5PG2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nVJuAbJW6B1HG

But I don't have much experience with chromebooks or chrome OS. Thoughts?

    Best Chromebook for college student

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 10:48 AM PST

Looking for a Chromebook to use for school. I currently have an HP and it's just not cutting it. It's heavy, slow, and needs to update every single day for hours. I've been interesting in getting a Chromebook but not sure which one to get. Would use it for school (mainly just writing papers and research) and web browsing. Preferably under $300. Any suggestions??

Is The asus 305ca still the best price/performance ultrabook?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 10:29 AM PST

Got one for my g/f s year ago and she loves it (uses it for word processing, surfing web, movies, no gaming/CPU intensive tasks). Her friend wants a laptop for the same purposes, would this be a good choice:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HZT6AR0/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1515327462&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=asus+zenbook+ux305ca&dpPl=1&dpID=41WSmKo4CzL&ref=plSrch

Appears to be the same specs as the one my gf got but this one has a touch screen. Are there any better options around $500 than this that are slim, well built and have an ssd?

    Helios 300 Inquiry

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:25 AM PST

    Hello good people of Reddit,

My model came with an HDD with a Windows 10 and a lot of Acer bloatware (bought 1 week ago). I recently bought an SSD with a clean install of Windows 10 already installed on it.

I am planning to format the HDD and I partitioned it first to store important files (not enough SSD memory) now, I plan to format it but I am not sure if something might go wrong. I am not sure if I actually need some of the applications that came with the laptop. I was hoping someone knows if I could proceed with the formatting without encountering future issues.

Also, are there Acer applications I should download just because the laptop could have the privilage to use it (like PredatorSense)?

Thank you for anyone that will help!

What’s the best laptop to purchase for gaming ?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:49 PM PST

Guys I'm a college student who loves gaming. However I'm currently stuck with an old ASUS laptop which isn't capable of playing FPS games which are released nowadays. With all the money saved I'm figuring out which gaming laptop to buy in my budget range.

Looking to upgrade from my Alienware m17x r3.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:38 AM PST

Hey! So I've had my alienware for years and it's finally starting to let me down. I'm trying to decide what to upgrade to. I do heavy video and photo editing (up to 8k video) as well as music production/djing. I was looking at the new Alienware 17 R4 and the new macbook pro 15. Assuming price isn't an option, does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Thanks!

A good non-touch, lightweight 13/14 inch laptop for under 1000$?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 05:58 PM PST

    Here are the specs I want;

    • 8th gen Intel processor

    • Non-touch 13 or 14 inch screen

    • 256 GB+ PCIe SSD

    • Decent battery life (8 hours or more)

At the moment, I'm considering an XPS 13 which is 200$ above budget but great. I also thought of buying the acer swift 3 but I am reluctant because I've never owned an acer and I heard it has got bad customer support where I live (Egypt).

Need a laptop for under USD $800

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:38 AM PST

So I need a laptop for school work and some light gaming. Some key specs I'm looking for are: 8th Gen i5 Nvidia MX150 Weighs below 2kg 13.3"/14" screen

I don't need an SSD, a HDD is good enough. Don't have any brand preference too. Any recommendations?

[Question] RAM Not Detected after Bios Update - Any Solution?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 06:53 PM PST

I have a G9-791 with 32GB Onboard Ram, and Later on I installed 2 x 16GB Additional Crucial Rams by removing backpanel of the Laptop. Total memory was upgraded to 64GB and everything worked fine. My YouTube Videos started stuttering recently, and overall system felt lagging .. hence I wanted to update all my drivers and bios.

I have updated my bios yesterday using the self update tool located https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/6371?b=1&pn=NX.Q09EM.012 Which is the support page for my Model.

After updating the Bios, which was V 1.11 (The Update went successfully, completed and the laptop shut down itself). I was unable to turn it on after the bios update. When I press the Power button, The Machine lights up, Fans starts, (Display remains blank) and after about 3 seconds everything switches off again. Did the Battery Pin reset, 5 Second, - tried several times, nothing helped.

Finally, I removed the backpanel and removed both the Rams and tried booting it. It boot up fine and everything works. System shows the installed 32GB Rams, and everything seems to work fine.

Then I tried to Troubleshoot the issue as below ->

    • Install one RAM on Bottom slot - Power on, No display - shuts down
    • Install one RAM on top slot - Power on, No display - shuts down
    • Install both RAM's - Power on, No display - shuts down Removed both the rams again, and the system seems to work fine.

What should I do ? Is there a way to change some setting and make the device detect the additional Rams again?

    ~£800 (US$1000) laptop for home

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 02:22 PM PST

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a laptop that

    • is less than £800

    • is good for watching netflix

    • is good for doing productivity stuff (word, excel, nothing too intensive)

    • has Windows OS

    • has a touch screen and is fold-able so it can stand on its own (this isn't super necessary - it would just be nice)

    • doesn't have a good battery life (it will probably never leave the house)

    • isn't portable (doesn't need to leave the house)

    • is stable (my current laptop is a Surface book and it has sooo many bugs)

    • doesn't have much bloatware

I realise this is a long list, I just want some pointers on what kinds of things would be good.

    Thanks!
