Gigabyte Aero 15/15X – anyone happy with their purchase?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 06:48 AM PST

I'm in the market for a 15" PC laptop that'll allow me to do relatively demanding audio production work on the go, and ideally it should be usable for game development as well (meaning beefy graphics card and a non-horrible keyboard). Build quality, support for 32GB of RAM and TB3 are deciding factors, too. Unfortunately I'll need it before mid-February, so I probably cannot afford to wait for this week's CES offerings to make it to the shelves. :(

Like many others I was wooed by the specs and looks of Gigabyte's Aero 15/15X, but looking around for real-world opinions seems to yield more negative than positive reports – the Aero 15's infamous key combination issue, fans that give out early, key chatter in the 15X, weak support and a byzantine RMA process on Gigabyte's end – which put quite a damper on my enthusiasm.

Since the list of devices that seem to do everything I want on paper is laughably short, I'm not quite ready to let go of the Aeros yet, so I'd be grateful to anyone who has one of these to let me know how it's been working out for them. If you've got an Aero 15 within the last 6 months, does it still have the LShift/LCtrl issue (reports vary between "they totally fixed that" and "they said they won't fix it")? Anything else I should be wary about? Anyone who's happy with their purchase and confident in the build quality?

My conservative fallback is an XPS 15, but that GTX1050 starts to be a bit long in the teeth for my purposes. If you have any other ideas, shoot!

Hello, I'm in the market for a used windows laptop as I am selling my 3ds, a tablet and my current laptop.

I have looked a lot and have found a hard time looking through brands, as there are so many options. I'm looking for something between 12 and 14 inches, with a decent keyboard and trackpad that looks reasonably appealing (not macbook appealing, but kinda razer attractive).

Im looking to write word documents and play just cause 3 at low 20-30 fps.

    Thanks.

    Help Buying - $1k-1.6k, Australia

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:21 PM PST

Hi Everyone and thank you in advance.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000-$1,600 - Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent Battery - decently fast laptop is preferred

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not overly important - most use will be on a desk/couch etc.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Something smaller 15inch or so to make it more portable. Will have a larger computer screen to connect to

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no - some light gaming would be a bonus (LoL etc)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? not a must but light gaming such as LoL would be a bonus but not required

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable, decent storage and something that wont be considerably slow in the near future

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Mainly web browsing, downloading and streaming movies and music but just normal general day to day use- i would like something decently fast with some storage but not something that will slow down considerably after a year or two of just basic use.

I have found this laptop which i am considering but wanted some feedback before buying, it is available in store close to me which is a bonus as i would like to see it in person before buying.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-pavilion-15-ck020tx-15-6-laptop.html

Mainly looking for feedback on this laptop itself but any suggestions advice would be appreciated!

    Thank you

    Asus laptop-q325ua-BI7T21

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:08 PM PST

This looks like a BB exclusive. It's the zenbook flip s with an 8th gen i7, 16gb Ram and a 512 ssd

I can't find any reviews on it, the only ones are of the older 7th gen one.

It's on sale at Best Buy for 1150 from 1299 with their student coupon.

Anyone have some experience with it? I know the 7th gen didn't have great battery life.

    Dual-Booting Acer Helios 300 / Eluktronics N850HP6 / Inspiron 7567

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:57 AM PST

Does anyone have any experience dual-booting any of these recommended laptops with both Windows and Linux (probably Ubuntu?). I am looking to get a new home laptop which will handle some light-to-moderate gaming (Skyrim-level at reasonable settings) in the $900 - 1200 range, but I'd also like to be able to partition the drive and do some Linux work on it. Anybody tried that with one of these?

    ASUS X550VX or Lenovo Legion?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:25 AM PST

I'm on the verge of replacing my Lenovo Z570 i7-2670qm/intel HD GFX/8gb ram/samsung SSD. It's pretty fast for my uses (CPU hungry tasks) but after 6 years the plastics are falling apart, the screen resolution is too small and now I have more free time so I want to play (not a heavy gamer though).

I can't decide between the Asus X550VX-DM629 (7300hq/950gt/4gb/FHD screen one) which goes for 800$ and the Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN (7300hq/1050GTX/8gb/FHD) which goes for 933$. I can't really find any detailed reviews on the ASUS while I found that the Lenovo suffers from overheating and build quality issues.

I will replace the HDD with an SSD and buy an extra 4gb if I'll go for the asus one.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: About 900$, Hungary

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, I'm not going to move it much

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As stated above, not very important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want it to be significantly faster than my current laptop. Video editing, photoshop, histopathology viewer and some gaming (not a heavy gamer)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not MUCH of a gamer since my current laptop doesn't allow it, but I guess I want to be able to run DOTA 2 on max settings along with few other games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality, ability to change the HDD and add RAM (I know some laptops make you go through hell to do it).

    900€ laptop frustration

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:09 AM PST

I have two friends who are looking for replacements for their 5+ year old laptops and apparently it's up to me to find some models suitable for them. Their use cases and price limits are very similar. They don't want to spend more than 1000€ (or around 900€) and want a light, portable 13'' laptop with long battery life, a good keyboard and trackpad, a decent screen without too much bezel and overall decent design and built quality. Their use cases are that of med school students - office stuff, browsing, Netflix, neither of them is interested in gaming, so intel HD is definitely sufficient. The most demanding thing they do with their laptops is organizing and color correcting their photos with Lightroom.

Oh, and one of them has an irrational aversion to the name "Yoga", so Lenovo's Yoga lineup really is only suitable for one of them.

It's not difficult finding decently equipped notebooks in that price range. An 8th gen core i5 U with 8GB Ram and a 256GB SSD seems standard, but those internals mean jack shit if everything else is not up to par. And it seems to me like you cannot find a laptop in that price range without making significant compromises.

Here are some I have selected based on what I could find online and, in some cases, hands on experience

    HP Envy 13 - 950€

    • Has the optimum configuarion I would want for them (8th gen I5 U, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram)
    • Panel seems decent, but not very bright, which might be a problem since it's glossy
    • ports look ok, but no full size SD card reader and hdmi mean dongle life
    • the case feels solid, well made and the edged design is pretty nice, imho
    • notebookcheck wasn't fond of the keyboard, but I found it to be pretty decent
    • trackpad is rather poor, though
    • if you open the lid, the lower part of it extends below the chassis, lifting it up. This is interesting, since the laptop basically rests upon this. It angles the keyboard a little, which I like, but has also the unfortunate side effect that when typing the screen takes up all the vibration and starts to wobble noticeably. It's really unfortunate

    DELL Inspiron 13 7370 - 886€

    • optimum configuarion again
    • both decent keyboard and trackpad
    • matte display with decent brightness - working in sunlight should be mostly fine
    • portwise it has everything you'd want - USB A and C, SD card reader, hdmi - no dongle life here
    • chassis is aluminum, but build quality doesn't feel that great
    • battery life is apparently nothing to write home about

    DELL XPS 13 9360 - 1100€

    • Currently on sale for 200€ less than usual. Really no compromises exept one
    • optimum configuation (though I suspect that dell displays the wrong processor on its website and the actual model on sale is last years 7th gen i5)
    • makes great use of resources and is faster than average
    • great keyboard and good trackpad
    • great battery life
    • great build quality and sturdy design
    • apprealing and extremely compact design
    • great port selection - though lack of hdmi means still dongle life
    • notebookcheck tested really bad color calibration on the display. As in worse than the average non calibrated displays around. Gamma is off by 0.5 and color and greyscale deltas are bad. Given that both of them travel quite a bit and want to do manage their photos with lightroom, I'm not sure if this should be a deal breaker

    Surface Laptop - 900€

    • Screen is vastly superior to anything else you can get in this price range
    • very bright, very accurate colors, about 2k resolution - though given the aspect ratio and unusual resolution standard marketing terms don't apply
    • 3:2 resolution at 13.5'' is great for working and web browsing and offers 15% more vertical space, as well as 11% more screenspace compared to 16:9 13.3''. It may offer less space for Netflix, but 16:9 letterbox is still 12.9'', so 16:9 only offers 6.5% more Netflix space, which is a no brainer compromise in my opinion
    • Probably best windows trackpad
    • great keyboard with a stupidly position power button
    • great battery life
    • great build quality with unique and imho very pretty design
    • Windows Hello with IR camera is pretty neat
    • magnetic power connector
    • solid speakers
    • configuation at this price is underwhelming (last gen i5 U, 128GB SSD, 4GB Ram) - especially the Ram leaves a bitter taste since it cannot be mitigated by an external drive, like the ssd, and certainly not upgraded)
    • alcantara feels great, but needs care and how well it ages probably depends on the excessiveness of your hand lotion use and sweatiness
    • ports are just lol. No SD card reader and mDP both mean #donglelife, though mDP to hdmi adapters are quite a bit cheaper than USB C dongles. Was that the plan MS? Save me 10 bucks on an adapter for a machine where the configuation you want costs 1350€? Thanks...
    • who would want to open their laptop anyways, right?

    Lenovo IdeaPad 720 - 889€

There are several version of this laptop around. I can only find tests for the 14'' version, though it's the 13.3'' version that interests me.

    • it comes with last years i5 U, 256GB SSD and 8GB Ram
    • both trackpad and keyboard seem to be the one you find on the Yoga 720, which I though were pretty decent and quite good respectively
    • design looks pretty neat
    • ports are ok, but it's still #donglelife
    • battery life will probably be worse than that of the XPS and Surface
    • having no information about the screen brightnes sucks
    • not sure what to make of this one

I currently favor the Surface Laptop. It may have the longest list of negatives, but the longest of positives as wekk, with the screen being a game changer in this price category. I also don't think certain negative aspects are that important. Ports really won't be much on an issue I guess. It's 2017 and most of their file transfer will be over DropBox/OneDrive. For the the use of external harddrives or the occasional USB drive one USB A port really is enough and what else kind of external device will the average medschool student use? The lack of USB C is unfortunate, but let's face it. USB C is 95% a charing port, and with the surface charger being magnetic, I don't mind them going proprietary over USB C charging. I also think the 7th gen i5 is mostly fine. For their use case the 2 additional cores don't add that much, and given that they are probably used 2nd gen i3s or worse, in combination with HDDs, they'll probably be more than happy with that. I also asked them about the 128GB storage, and they are fine with it. Apart from the bitter aftertaste, that the 0 ifixit score leaves, I only have a real problem with the 4GB ram.

I did some tests today and at 14 tabs with 3 of them being youtube videos, Edge, Chrome and Firefox all hover at about 1.9GB. Netflix takes up half a GB. Before my current laptop with 8GB ram I only had 4 as well, and I cannot really remember me having much problems with it - but it still feels wrong buying 4GB ram in 2018. Is there going to be any significant problem with the 4GB limit? Currently both are using 2GB, and their complaints are a) start up of the system and browser takes ages- which is probably more HDD related and b) everything get's less and less reliable, with the keyboard randomly stopping working, system shutdowns, screen issues etc.

Unless I'm really mistaken about the Ram, I think they'll get more from the Surface Laptop's strength and unique features than than from the other notebooks' higher performance.

However, If you have a different opinion or ideas about alternatives, I'd love to hear your input, because I'm really just unsure about everything right now.

Do i need a new laptop?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:05 AM PST

Hi guys, this is literally my first reddit post, I'm kind of confused if a laptop upgrade would make a big difference or it's too small that it isn't worth it.

I have a sony viao with an i5-2430m processor, geforce 310m graphics with 500 mb dedicated memory and 6 gb of ram.

I'm looking into a dell with an i3-6006u processor with 4 gb of ram and integrated memory.

I only need it to watch movies, youtube videos, and going online. I've been looking online on the differences between the processors and they seem very minimal, like it's almost not worth upgrading.

So my question basically is, is it worth 500 dollars with tax for the upgrade, and i live in Canada so it's not overpriced :P. Thank you guys in advance.

Do I Need a Cooling Pad/Fan for a Gaming Laptop?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:53 AM PST

I have a RoG Asus Strix GL502. I've browsed many articles that say cooling pads have little to no effect for the temperature of the laptop, and many that say I helps it immensely because of the powerful specs it has. My sister (IT) also tells me to get one. Should I or is it just a waste of money? Thanks in advance.

    Used Dell XPS worth it?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 03:12 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000€ - 1900€

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care about 2 in 1, or really battery either.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

Light video and photo editing and gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mainly casual games such as Tf2 and Arma3

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I appreciate a good keyboard, probably end up using an external kb though.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I'm looking at two used XPS machines. Other is XPS 13 with 7th gen i5, HD Graphics 620, 8gb ram, 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD and 1920 x 1080 anti glare screen. Comes at a price of 1000€

And the other is a XPS 15 9550 with Intel I7 6700 HQ, 32 gb ram, 4k touch screen, and 1TB SSD. Comes at a price of 1900€

So which one should I go for or should I just buy new? I know the other is almost twice the price, but I'm hoping it will be a bit more future proof.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like something lightweight, but not necessary.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-17 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only game I will be playing will be Sims 4. I will be using Paint Tool Sai frequently as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only Sims 4. FPS doesnt matter really.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing in particular, I would like a light up keyboard, if possible though.

Cut losses on macbook and switch to windows?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:29 PM PST

Have a 2014 MBP, that was great for when I had it until last spring. Around then, starting experiencing freezing issues that would persist for days and then disappear for a few months. Since then, the issue has happened 3 more times and gets worse every time. Visited the apple store today and was told it would cost $475 flat rate to fix, although the employees could not diagnose anything and admitted that sending it in did not guarantee anything and that I could be out the $475 if the issue is not identified after the new 3 month warranty. After further questioning the laptops symptoms the technician's explanation did not make sense and the story kept changing. I do not mean to bash the employee, I simply do not think they can accurately diagnose the issue at hand. As such, I invested in this MBP in order to get a long term laptop, not a 3 year machine that costs $475 to fix. Does shit happen? Yes, but when Mac is advertised as something that "just works", I have a hard time sticking around when it has been just the opposite. I am considering switching to windows, the Lenovo Yoga 920 with a 4K display, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD. At those specs, a mac would run well over $2k, but I can get this Lenovo for $1300. I know this is a mac forum, and I am a lover when it works myself, but at this price point I am considering switching.

Tl;dr: 3 year old mac is crapping out, considering switching to a fully spec'd Lenovo 920 Yoga for the same price as essentially a baseline Macbook. Thoughts?

Could someone Explain the Difference between a chromebook with a different oS installed and a regular notebook?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 10:53 PM PST

As I understand it, Chromebooks have the upper hand on similarly-priced notebooks in terms of battery life and build quality, because the OS is free and stuff like memory and storage is typically lower. Does this mean it's possible to have a cheap, well-built laptop by getting a Chromebook and installing a lightweight distribution of Linux on it? What, if anything, is sacrificed? In certain cases, can the user upgrade RAM and the drive on their own?

I feel like I'm not seeing the whole picture here. Could someone help me compensate for my lack of knowledge/blind spots by going over what is gained and lost?

    Having Some Regrets.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:42 PM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 7577 (i5 7300hq, GTX 1060 6GB, 256 GB SSD) for $650 after tax (Normally its 1000 before tax). The laptop is coming in tommorow and they are offering me a full refund if I return it.

However, I'm wondering if I should return it after hearing about the new intel cpu leaks and Nvidia's Volta being right around the corner.

Anyway, I was wondering what you guys would think of my predicament. Should I return my laptop and wait for the new generation or should I keep it?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks everyone, I'll be keeping the laptop. No buyers remorse thanks to you guys.
