    Personal preference/Advice needed

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:24 PM PST

I'm currently using an HP Spectre x360 that I bought on the spot back in 2015 because I loved what it offered - a touch screen, tablet capability, and an amazing battery life. Early on, the hinges started shifting but never seemed to be an issue. Recently, the hinges started failing and the screen wobbled back and forth. My father opened it up and tightened the hinges' screws, but it appears that he did it too tight because a few days later (yesterday), my screen cracked right across.

For how old it is, and how this wasn't the only issue that my computer has had, I've decided to look into getting a new laptop. I originally was saving up for a MacBook Pro, but this was on sale from $1200 to $900 as part of a holiday sale, and it had better specs than the entry-level MacBook Pro.

I've used windows my whole life, and have owned multiple windows products, but they all ultimately show faults in one way or another. I've talked to multiple MacBook Pro owners who still use their 2011 ones as their daily computer, and they only have positive things to say. My partner had an Air two years ago, but I introduced him to the new model HP Spectre x360, and he sold his Air for it and says he would never go back. Hearing both of these viewpoints makes it hard to decide.

I love Windows 10, and fear that Mac OS will feel too polished and restrictive to me but I also appreciate the build quality of MacBooks. I've explored other laptops, but i'm torn between getting a new HP Spectre x360 (like my partner has), or to give Apple a try.

Has anyone else made the switch between operating systems/laptops and have advice in determining which laptop to go with? I'm torn between excellent build quality and what I know/love.

Any news from the Asus Zenbook Pro 4k version ?

please recommend a new laptop for gaming and school

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:13 PM PST

My ASUS is 5 years old and is running very slowly. I don't have a lot to spend on a replacement. I have seen $200 HP laptops at Walmart, but I don't know if they are any good.

I will be streaming Rocket League to a 4k TV using Steam Link. Other than that, just email and web browsing.

What is the cheapest laptop I can get that will run Rocket League on good settings? I have around $200 but I have a feeling that's not enough.

Slight peeling on hand rests (Dell XPS 13)

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 11:37 AM PST

Hey, so I just got a new XPS 13 and the carbon fiber hand rests have started peeling almost like dead skin. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to restore it or prevent it from happening more. I can return it for repair since it is still under warranty but classes start in a few days and I am going to need it for that. Anything will help. Thanks

Upgrade path for HP Envy x360 with Ryzen 5 2500U?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:42 AM PST

I bought the base version with 8gb ram and the 1tb hard drive. Now that I have some money set aside, I want to upgrade the ram and get an SDD. The laptop is listed as having max 16gb dual channel SO-DIMM DDR4 2400 ram so I was thinking about getting this 2x8gb from G.SKILL.

I was also thinking about this 250gb 960 EVO SSD. Would these be compatible with this laptop? I've never upgraded a laptop before so I'm not familiar with their specifications.

The Crucial upgrade scanner does not have this model of laptop in their system yet so I want to be safe with my choices before I commit to getting any hardware.

    Thanks!

[HELP] Acer Predator 15 G9-593-74 vs. Asus ROG GL502VS

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:21 AM PST

It'd be a really great help for any suggestions or inputs regarding the two laptops. It has the same GPU (GTX 1070). The Acer's memory has DDR4 and the Asus' has DDR3L with 2800MHz. But really my concern is that the Asus has a G-Sync and can run 120 fps, while the Acer can't (although it has a sticker of G-Sync, it says it only supports external monitor that has a G-Sync.)

Not sure what will be the deal breaker here. Really appreciate any inputs or suggestions. Tia.

    Reboot instead of shutdown

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:01 AM PST

Hello reddit ! I'm here today to request your help with my laptop, MSI CX61 2QF. The problem is when I want to shut it down with the shutdown button on windows 10, 7, Debian, the laptop shutdown and then after 3secs it reboot.

If I press the power button 3sec, it's ok I have a shutdown. I already try many steps on windows 10: regedit, disable wake on lan, ...

But nothing are working. So I wonder if is not located in BIOS, but its a very basic BIOS, aptio setup utility 2012 with few advanced options. May be one of you have an idea on what it could be ? thank you for your help, have a nice day and an happy new year

[Hardware] Will this SSD work in my MSI GE72 laptop?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 08:32 AM PST

    Hi,

I have an MSI GE72 Apache Pro and want to put an SSD in it. I think I found one that I like, but can anyone confirm that it will work in my laptop? Here is a screenshot of the ports and SSDs from the manual: https://imgur.com/GaAinuF

Here is the SSD I am considering: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820147594

    Thanks in advance.

Just a simple thank you To You

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:50 PM PST

    Hi Folks,

I just wanted to say thank you for this forum and the info I gathered. I never posted a question. I read the Wiki and used that as a basis for making my laptop choice.

I ended up with the... Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Laptop: Core i5-7300HQ, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, GTX 1050Ti, 15.6inch Full HD Display, Backlit, with Numberpad

Its a variant of the suggestion in the Wiki... Dell Inspiron 15 7567 / Eluktronics N850HK1 (IPS display)

I ended up getting it direct from Dell. Only cost difference was $55 in tax, but I'm OK with that as opposed to saving $55 and buying from an unknown entity.

Anyway, thank you, and Happy New Year!

How many displays can acer swift 3 support

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 07:40 AM PST

I recently purchased an Acer Swift 3 laptop. I have an external display plugged into the HDMI port. I was wondering if there was a way to connect a second external display so I could be running an extended desktop over 3 displays.

My research thus far seems to indicate the Swift itself can only handle the one extra display. Is there anything out there (some kind of external video card type thingie) that will let me connect the second additional display?

Is there some kind of other option that might work?

I'd really love to have the 14 inch laptop sitting between 2 larger displays!

    Thanks in advance!

    Help me choose!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 04:40 AM PST

I recently stumbled on what looks like a deal on brand new laptops. Which one offers the best price/quality ratio?

    Option 1: HP Omen 17 i7-7700HQ 12 GB RAM 1 TB HDD 17.3" Nvidia GTX 1060 $1100 CAD (900 USD)

    Option 2: HP Omen 17 i7-7700HQ 16 GB RAM 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD 17.3" Nvidia GTX 1070 $1500 CAD (1200 USD)

    Thanks!

Where Can I Buy The Gigabyte Aero 14 or 15 in the Philippines?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:36 PM PST

This is my dream laptop, but sadly, the availability of really good laptops are scarce. Is there any service that any of you know of that can ship this laptop to the Philippines? I have checked this website called BenstorePC and they have the Aero 14, but I am skeptical. Here's the Link to their website: https://benstore.com.ph/gigabyte/2903-gigabyte-aero-14wv7-gn4-14-qhd-gaming-laptop-i7-7700hq-gtx-1060-6gb-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-green-.html

Thank you redditors! This is an crucial decision for me and any help is valued. Happy New Year!

    Thoughts about mSI gaming Laptops?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:14 PM PST

Are there any owners here? How was it/is it so far?

Thinking of buying one simply because of the price compared to other brands. Might get MSI GAMING PRO GL62M instead of Asus ROG Strix GL503VD.

I'm Philippine based, not much choice locally.

Cleaning out speakers on lenovo y700

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:09 PM PST

Hey guys, I've had my Lenovo y700 for little over a year now. If you search it up you'll see its weird speakers on the side. Those have been collecting a bit of dust (some parts looking a bit grayer and dusty than the usual red). I don't know how to get it out without damaging the speakers themselves so anyone know?

    Help recommend me a laptop?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:11 PM PST

First time posting so sorry if I mess anything up

Total budget and country of purchase: $500 but could probably go higher if needed and United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for my money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Minecraft, general art programs like FireAlpaca, drawing tablet drivers, Microsoft Office, maybe Steam if it lasts a while

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft and no preference

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A backlit keyboard would be nice but probably not within my price range Literally the only thing I want is a laptop that isn't known for the hinges/case to break so easily with no abuse other than opening and closing it. I had found some laptops I was interested in but a Google search showed me many people with hinges/cases breaking within a few months and I don't want to deal with that again anytime soon (My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 5000)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm more of a casual user if anything so anything that can handle college schoolwork and other misc. activities would be great. I might suck it up about the hinge issue and get the Acer Aspire E5-575-33BM or shell out the extra money for a Macbook but I'd like to know my options first

Asus 13.3" Flip with 8th Gen with a Pretty nCIE surprise ;)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:22 PM PST

I just bought an Asus 13inch Flip PC from the MS store link

I was a bit on the fence about the computer because I am coming from a Surface Book (1st gen) with a PCI-e SSD. ASUS said the 1TB version was PCIE, but all smaller versions were just SSD. They even provided graphs on their website comparing PCI-e speeds with "SSD"s.

I wasn't hoping for much when it arrived, but I saw on the box it listed the 512GB as a PCI-e 3rd gen 4x.

Sure enough the SSD was a PM961.

For $1399 ($1299 on Amazon ?) I am very happy with the computer. It is noticeably fast. And I actually need 16GB of RAM for work. So I am looking forward to putting this computer through it's paces.
