Looking for a new laptop by Dec 2018

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:13 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: £1700 UK,England

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Good Specs + Battery life + Design. I just want 1080p and NO touchscreen or 2 in 1

How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty Important, I am willing to go a little over budget for it.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac (I prefer Macbooks for design but the price is Overwhelmingly pricey)

Do you have a preferred screen size? Nope

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I just want it to run Planet Coaster/Cities Skylines/Rocket league and Rust. I dont really do any editing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games are listed above but I just want most games besides really heavy games to run at 50+ fps (Just as long as its smooth gameplay)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good Keyboard, Good Build quality, Good input devices and good storage 256gb-512gb and a nice screen(e.g dell xps 15 or macbook pro)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am wondering if Apple will upgrade the Macbook Pro graphics card a Radeon by default without paying stupid money extra for their 2018 model but could you list a Mac option and a windows option.

    Thank You!

My laptop had build quality issues when I received it, which resulted in the palm rest cracking the motherboard. MSI is refusing to repair it because they claim I tampered with the laptop, but won't provide any proof that I did.

Would This Laptop Be Good Enough For Mild Gaming?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:48 PM PST

So I fucked up my current laptop (clumsiness led to slight damage led to the screen breaking away from itself) and I need a new one.

The majority of the time, I use my laptop to surf the web (a lot), listen to music, watch youtube (movies and tv I tend to stick to my PS4) and use Photoshop; however, I also like to dabble in gaming. I dont play "heavy" games like Dragon Age, No Mans Sky, Bloodborne (old examples I know but I'm sure you understand what I mean) rather playing less intensive games. For example, Civilization 6 or The Sims 4 (ok Sims 4 might be kinda intensive but its not horrendous). So I want to make sure my laptop could run those.

This is the laptop I'm currently considering but I dont understand technical lingo at all, so I've no idea if it'd be good enough.

This was the laptop I was using, so if possible I want whatever I get to run at least as well as it however, I understand this laptop had 8GB's of memory (something I didnt realise until now) and that the laptop I'm looking at only has 4GB. How much would that change the performance?

Otherwise, does anyone have a better suggestion for what I could buy? I can't go above £400, but I was hoping that £350 would be the limit (I'm currently unemployed which means Im gonna spending almost half my current bank balance on a new laptop), and I want a laptop that runs as well as my previous one, which I thought might be possible since its a year and a month since I got my laptop.

Thank you for any and all help offered!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada $1300 - $1800

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life or best specifications for the money

Abysmal battery life after updating to Windows 10

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:55 AM PST

I bought a Samsung Series 9 laptop (NP900XG-K02DE) around three years ago that I recently updated to Windows 10. Everything works fine except for the fact that my battery life is now pretty much half of what it was under Win8.1. I suppose that is because Samsung doesn't support my model anymore (even though it's not very old), so I had to install the Samsung Settings software of another model (NP900X3J-K01HK, sort of similar to mine but not the same).

Samsung Settings is necessary for the function keys (display backlight, volume and so on). As far as I know, it also installs some power plans that are tailored to the specific hardware of the laptop. Since the version I installed is for a different one, I guess this doesn't work properly and runs less efficiently (all the function key stuff works). I don't know if this is actually the case or if the reason is something else, though.

I originally wanted to install the Win8.1 version of Samsung Settings for my laptop and see where that gets me, but Samsung doesn't offer driver and software downloads on their website anymore. You have to go through a program called Samsung Update and enter your model number, and then it offers you whatever software it can find. Because my laptop is not officially supported for Win10, it comes up with nothing. So I can't even download the Win8.1 versions for my laptop.

Does anyone have an idea what I could try? Going back to Win8.1 is not really an option, because 10 offers some functionality that I need. Having less than three hours of battery life where it used to be close to 6 on Win8.1 is not really satisfactory either, though.

Laptop is doing some weird stuff...

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:07 AM PST

So this problem started about 3 weeks ago.

Friend and I wanted to disassemble the laptop so we can replace the thermal paste... then we realized that to get to the thermal paste and clean it off, we'd need to void the warranty on the laptop.

So then we decided to put the laptop back together, and all was good.

    Till a couple days later...

Laptop started to get choppy for no apparent reason (mouse was flickering, choppy mouse), and the worst of all: when I go to boot up my laptop, I see the ASUS logo, and the little circular loading thingy, then the logo disappears, and the computer is stuck in limbo. The screen isn't even turned off. The logo just disappears. The only thing I can do from there is A) Remove the battery or B) Hold down the power button for a few seconds till it shuts off.

It's been annoying the crap out of me for some time now, and I haven't found a solution for it yet. Friend said he changed my power settings to some custom stuff. So I changed them back to default settings, and it seemed to do the trick for a few days, but then it reverted back to the logo disappearing and laptop being stuck in limbo phase.

    Laptop specs:

    ASUS ROG GL552VW CPU: i7 6700HQ Skylake RAM: 12GB 2133MHz GPU: Nvidia 960M Storage: 1TB HDD 240GB Adata SSD

The SSD is something I installed a month after buying the laptop, so it's custom.

I'd really hate to have to wipe the laptop. I've got too many programs installed, and I'm making a game, and I'm not so sure how I'd have to back that up, but if wiping and reinstalling everything is the only way to go, then so be it.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks a lot for reading.

    i5 6200u & nvidia 945m VS I5 7200U & hd 620

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 05:20 AM PST

Hey guys. I currently have a computer which have a I5 6200U processor together with the 945m dedicated gfx. However i want to change out my computer due to the fact that i don't like my pc's current design. However I was thinking that i wanted to save some money and buy a used laptop with I5 7200U processor and no dedicated gfx. In that connection i would like to know if the gaming experience will be much worse than now? i play games like League of legends and Fortnite. So not the most requiring games.

    Thank you, Kasper

    Asus s510un vs Ideapad 720s 14kbl

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 05:03 AM PST

They both have the same specs (i7 8550u, mx150, 8gig ram) and the same price (1k).

The only difference I know for now is the screen size, existence of thunderbolt 3(720s has one, s510un doesn't) and screen quality (I'm not sure with this, but heard that 720s has a better one)

I'm recommending a laptop to a friend. He isn't a heavy user, and prioritizes screen quality and battery life (and apperently doesn't like 13 inch laptops). Which is the better choice in this case? And are there better ones in the same pricetag? (~1.1k)

    Thank you :D

Aero 15x now "Currently Unavailable" on amazon

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:48 PM PST

So i check amazon a few times a day to check the world wide stock issue with the Gigabyte Aero 15x. My check for the night just show our last ray of hope, amazon, showing "Currently Unavailable". I placed a order on January 8th, in hopes it will come in stock as I need it a week ago but can hold out until the 10th of Feb. Now that it seems they won't restock until their updated Aero in Q2 of 2018, I'm in need of a new laptop! (like now)

I currently have a Aero 15 sitting, unopen in the event Aero 15x becomes unobtainable. Is there any other thin and light laptop to purchase? Content creation (video editing, After Effects in future) is my main focus as well some light gaming on the side. I do have a custom rig at home so I don't need the desktop vs laptop debate. I'm not looking at the Mac Book Pro as I already have a iMac for my Final Cut needs. I travel for work currently and need a editing laptop that can last me a few years. I use primarily Adobe Premiere Pro for my content creation needs as well as productivity.

Should I just open up the Aero 15 and pray i got a good lottery ticket on it? Did Gigabyte ever fix any of the current laundry list of issue on the Aero 15? Backlight bleed, combination key issue, battery brick weird, double type key issue, etc?

Looking for a long-term, durable laptop capable of Occasional gaming, and preferably with a disc drive

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:47 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Consider $1200 maximum budget. Purchasing from the US, but might be able to purchase in Japan if I pass my job interview.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want good specs first and battery life second. 2 in 1 and touchscreens are not really my thing, though I can tolerate a touchscreen if it can be disabled.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, as long as it's durable

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for sure

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"-16", preferably

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video/photo editing is a plus. If it can run anything as complex as Minecraft, I'm good.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above question

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I rely on a good keyboard and touchpad, as I never use a mouse accessory. Durability is a must. If a disc drive and relatively decent speakers are compatible with that, great.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want a laptop I can carry around in a backpack and expect to last a few years. It should be able to run a few complex programs at a time without me having to call in Task Manager to kill them for lack of response. I've preferred Dell in the past, but am open to other Windows options. I'm willing to spend more than I usually do here, but saving money is a plus. I am also open to modification suggestions.

Asus' numbering system makes no sense aka... uX330UA vs UX430UA - what's the better buy?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:14 PM PST

I've given up on my dream of an affordable rose gold Zenbook. I've missed the boat on that last year, I guess. My options this year (limited budget) are either a UX330UA or a UX430UA. Both are the same price, and specs (other than screen) seem roughly the same to me. What's the better buy?

    Need a laptop suggestion

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:42 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Something from about $500-$800, purchasing in USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I definitely don't want one of those 2 in 1 form factors. Good battery life is a little more important than good specifications to me, but both are important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important. If it was 15-20 pounds I probably wouldnt mind.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for sure. Ideally the laptop's hardware would have support for linux so I can play around with it without running into drivers issues etc. but thats not a priority.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be gaming, and also potentially working with a digital audio workstation (but im not sure how intensive that gets, I just know my current laptop cant handle it well)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to be able to play most modern games at low graphics settings and 30fps. I'll use Dark Souls III as an example, since my friend can run it on low graphics settings and his laptop isnt very expensive.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be nice. I dont need anything special though.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to use this laptop for both gaming and other activities at home, and also to be able to carry it with me and use it for work, and ideally it will remain useful for 3 or 4 years.

    First laptop, general keyboard question

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:34 PM PST

My new XPS 13 (9370) has secondary icons on the number buttons that designate additional functions such as volume, keyboard backlight, forward/backward AV controls, etc.

Additionally, there are also secondary icons are the directional keys (up and down) for adjusting the screen brightness.

At a curiosity, how come when I adjust any of the settings on the number buttons I have to hit Alt + Button, but when I adjust the screen brightness it's Fn + Button?

Why is it that some of the combinations require use the Alt key, and for others, the combination requires use of the Fn key?

As far as I can tell, Fn + Up/Down for brightness would be the only time I'd ever even use the Fn key since all the others use Alt.

I'm mostly just curious about this, it doesn't bother me too much besides the fact I have to remember which is which. Why not just make it consistent with all the buttons? So for example all secondary functions would be Fn + Button.

    Upgrading from an hP...

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:14 PM PST

Hello, I am a college student who got my first laptop a year ago. It was an HP Pavilliom, entry level from Office Depot running Windows 10. Prior to that, I had (still do, need to replace the processor) a desktop running NVIDIA that ran everything including CRYSIS in 2012. I am posting this asking for advice on what to look for. I was in a rollover car crash that destroyed my laptop. Still turns on, I'm going to pull the memory and download it to an HDD, but it won't go past BIOS. I am looking for a laptop that can suit my needs. I primarily use it to access the web, google drive for school, and downloading LOTS of torrents. My previous HP started noticeably slowing down towards the end of its life, possibly due to the torrents. I also have a diverse Steam library, but I do not play video games as much as I used to, I'm still enjoying stuff like L4D and MW3. I was interested in Macs for a little bit but I have never owned one before. I recently got a Nikon camera and torrented photoshop to develop pictures, but it was so slow. All I know is that I want a decent amount of RAM, more than 8gb.

So for my wants and needs, what can you recommend?
