    Hi Reddit techies:

I'm making a trip over here from the academic corners of Reddit. I am totally unaware of many basic software and internet principles and the inner workings of how computers function and so I come here with a couple questions.

Today I allowed Adobe to "trust" a website. It's a very popular website with hundreds of millions of users everyday. Is there any way that trusting that site could allow my computer to be hacked?

I'm extremely uneducated about computers, and I think the masses could seriously benefit from learning about super basic ways of keeping yourself safe from hackers, and viruses, and how to protect your privacy and security.

I have a MacBook and have never once run an Anti-virus scan of my computer. Living abroad, I use a few different VPNs, and am sometimes forced to connect to "insecure" WiFi points. Is there a possibility that a virus lurks in my computer and someone is receiving my passwords every time I type them in? Once again, you can probably see that my lack of knowledge is somehow manifesting in the form of severe paranoia. I may be reaching. Could someone fill me in these questions?

I feel grateful to have a community of the savviest and brightest on my side when these kinds of questions arise.

I know this is going to get some great answers so thank you so much in advance.

Best wishes and happy new year

I really need help with a printer. (17y/o intern noob, my boss left and Im the only one at IT)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 12:02 PM PST

Ive come here from /r/sysadmin, I copy/pasted everything here again to see if I can get more answers.

Hey, Im really sorry if this isnt the right sub, it probably isnt. Ive never been here but I hope you guys have more experience than I do. After googling for what seems 1 hour and a half, testing the amount of paper, removing the cartridge and putting it back and looking what seemed wrong, this is my last hope.

The printer is a LaserJet m2727nf and at first it was doing some loud grinding noises, it stopped doing that after a reset and now it just paper jams every time I try to print/copy anything. The only error that it gives translates to ''paper jammed in the cartridge area''.

The thing is my boss (he and I were the only ones at IT) left the company on friday and Im now the only one doing the work. I have 17 years old and I came here fresh with 0 experience about 2 months ago, so I have absolutely no idea what to do.

edit: Ive also done everything it says in the HP support forums about it, and cleaned everything with a piece of cloth on the inside.

Can't Install Windows 10 on an empty Hard Drive

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:17 AM PST

Recently wiped my entire hard drive and I am trying to reinstall Windows 10 via usb. When I boot it with UEFI, it starts setting up normally until I have to choose a partition. When I choose the only partition available, as soon as I press Next, I receive the following message "windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase".

I cannot boot on any other OS as the hard drive was completely wiped. I am not sure how to solve this issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Description of problem

my headset is connected through a line in to the "phones" port of my speakers. it detects my speakers in playback devices, but not my headphones/mic (in recording devices--nor in playback). id like to be able to switch from my webcam mic to my headset mic, but the headset mic isn't even showing up as an option so i dont know how to use it.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

lots of googling. asked this question on reddit's gaming thread and got vague answers to use a splitter. but i dont have a mic port on my speakers so i dont know what to do. do i need to split it and then merge it? whats the point of that?

Windows 10 update error corrupted my only user profile

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 02:58 AM PST

I'm not sure if the title diagnosed it correctly actually. When I first turned my PC on it failed to login and prompted me with a message (that I forgot to record) that said my account failed to connect and was locked out or something.

Upon restarting my PC notified me of an update (Hi there, we've got some updates for your PC...) and proceeded to loop between those two sentences. After 5 minutes it was still looping so I did another hard reset and when the PC came back on it led to this.

EDIT: After tinkering around a little bit I think I managed to isolate the issue, it's that Windows Explorer is corrupt. I'm able to run all other programs and open all files, but Explorer itself is unusable and I get the popup "DDE Server Window: explorer.exe - System Warning, Unkown Hard Error". Any idea how to fix this?

    Virus on safari

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:43 PM PST

Recently on my phone I haven't been able to go on any website (other than google) without a pop up ad saying Ive won an Amazon gift card showing up and redirecting me to another page. I've tried restarting my phone then clearing the website data and history in my settings like I've read on many websites but to no avail. I'm not even sure how I got it because I don't visit shifty sites or have any questionable apps downloaded. But anyways- how do I fix this without having to restore my phone to factory setting and how can I avoid something like this from occurring again?

    Need SSD help please..

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:27 PM PST

My pc is booting slower using my 960 nvme ssd than using my 850 evo. Benchmark tests show me getting the optimum read/write speeds for the 960, yet it boots around 16 seconds. My 850 is booting in 8 seconds. I've done clean installs of the OS with only the 960 connected. I have csm in the bios turned off, there is only one bootable drive selected, and I made sure the bios was showing gen3/x4 speeds.

    Any ideas?

    Description of problem

Since I have my new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 500gb), Windows keeps crashing (about once a day) without a bluescreen. It simply turns off and reboots automatically. It sounds like a heat problem, but that's definitely not the case, since the system worked fine for a year with the same cooling. Since there is no bluescreen, there is no crash dump.

    Date of purchase

    25th of December

    Under Warranty

    Yes

    Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Normal Windows use. Actual cause not clear; could be SSD or BIOS

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

Reinstalling Windows, Firmware update for SSD, BIOS Update (latest BIOS is from mid 2015!)

Is it at all possible to fax a PDF without printing/scanning anything or using an actual fax machine?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:16 PM PST

I got a contracting position at an online company and have to submit my W-9 forms. The problem is that they don't accept the forms over email. Only snail mail and fax. I don't have a car or printer so snail mail isn't really an easy option, and getting a ride to the library to print them would be a huge pain in the ass because i'd have to pay gas money and pay to use the libraries printer.

If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it.

    Internet Privacy in Hotel/Casino?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 01:12 AM PST

I am staying at a Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. I am using hotel wifi that is connected to me directly by name. It isnt a all users log into one wifi connection, its specific to me and me alone.

Can the Hotel/Casino monitor my internet usage, such as visited sites/links, downloading, anything?

Paranoid in my internet usage till I find out.

    Thanks!

~P . S - Complete honesty: I am visiting drug forums, and drug related websites. Purely websites that are knowledge bases, which usually provide safe usage tips. Doesn't endorece drug usage, just teaches you how to use safely, if you decide to use anyways.

Recovering data from "old' boot drive.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 04:12 AM PST

I recently installed an M.2 960 EVO onto my MSI X99S sli plus mobo with the plan to migrate the OS and other data from my 850 EVO. I installed the 960 and the PC would not recognize it. I checked device manager and bios to no avail. So I upgraded to the most recent BIOS which was supposed to have improved support for M.2. After the BIOS update the 960 was recognized but it would not boot from my 850. Basically saying that no OS was detected. I try manually selecting the drive for boot and I get the same error message. I check the BIOS and the 850 is not there, I try several other things and nothing works. I revert to the old BIOS, still can't boot, so I finally submit to a fresh windows install on the 960.

Now I am trying to get my files off of the 850. The 850 is recognized in BIOS, device manager, and disk management but all of the options for explore, format, expand etc are grayed out. I'm not able to set it as active or give it a drive letter.

Is there anyway to get my data off of this drive?

Laptop suddenly stopped working - please help!

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:54 AM PST

    Dear tech-savvy people of reddit,

last week the laptop of my girlfriend broke down after being in use for several years. Since she doesn't have the money to just buy a new one and kind of clings to that old cucumber I figured I'd give it a shot and try to repair it somehow. Down below I will describe the issue, the spec and the measures I took until now.

    Issue

The laptop takes very long to start up and then reacts with a huge delay to every input you make. After a minute or two, sometimes earlier, it makes a "clack" sound and turns off instantly.

    Model & Specs

Model: Sony Vaio PCG-71811M Core I3 15.6 Inch

    Processor: Intel Core i3 2350M 2.30GHz

    Graphics: nVidia GeForce 410M

Hard Drive: Hitachi 500GB SATA Hard Drive

    OS: Windows 10

    Thoughts

I initially thought about the shutting down as a sign for overheating (girlfriend told me that the laptop smelled weird, too), but I'm now at a point where I think its due to some kind of software. When the laptop kept on running for a minute I was able to get into the system to start the task manager (looking for processes that drive up the cpu) there was no process shown at all, but only a message saying "There are no applications running".

    Measures

    • I took apart the laptop and cleaned the interior thoroughly to exclude the overheating-possibility and to look for any hardware that looks damaged.

    • I tried to start the laptop in Safe Mode but even then it just keeps shutting down after a minute.

    • I then got to the System Recovery screen and was able to start the Recovery Process with a Recovery Point from early december where the system still worked, and to my surprise the laptop is still running the process without shutting down after a minute. This has been going on for about fifteen minutes now, which leads to me assuming that there maybe is some kind of malware turning off the system when getting started regularly?

I will let this Recovery Process run through and then come back to update/edit this post, but maybe you guys already got a clue what could be up with the laptop? Another question: If I'm not able to get that thing running again anyhow, is there an easy way to extract/save the data from the hard drive?

    Thanks in advance!

    NanoSIM won't fit

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:49 PM PST

EDIT: I cut it more and it worked, so nevermind

I just got a dual SIM S6, and coming from an S5 I had a microSIM, and in my eagerness I decided I wouldn't wait till tomorrow to buy a nanoSIM, and instead cut my microSIM. I used a template and it seems to fit. I grabbed the SIM holder and it fits horizontally (width), but it's a few mm too tall.

Thing is, there's no more room for me to cut without cutting the metal part, and most pictures I've seen of nanoSIMs actually have excess plastic.

I did see this photo where the metal part was actually cut on the bottom and on the diagonal edge, which gave me hope that it might actually be done like that, but I'm not really sure if it is.

Does anyone know if it's correct to cut a few mm of the metal part? Or what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks

    Microsoft Support Remote Access?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:44 AM PST

So after using Microsoft chat on my computer to resolve an issue with Microsoft edge pausing a video while minimising tab, the guy asked me if he could remote access my computer. I gave him permission without thinking and he sent me to these links:

    https://secure.logmeinrescue-enterprise.com/Customer/Code.aspx

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/29289/receive-remote-assistance-support-from-microsoft

He fixed my problem thankfully and I didn't see anything suspicious happening on my screen, (he turned off 'let windows track app launches to improve start and search results' for some reason I don't know) other than I had to run this program that turned my desktop's background black.

Anyway I'm really paranoid that even though I didn't see him do anything fishy, he may have somehow downloaded a hidden malware or something. He gave me reassurance Microsoft would keep my information safe and was generally very polite. I guess his not so perfect grammar kinda scared me into thinking I've made a big mistake and the guy I was talking to was your typical Indian scammer. (no offense) Am I just being an idiot, or do I have reason to worry?

Been trying to fix a problem for years. Need a new PSU?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:40 AM PST

    Hi,

OS: Dual boot with Linux Mint and Windows 7 64bit

CPU: Dual Core 2.1GHz Intel Celeron Processor G540T

    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5450

    Current PSU: Corsair CX430

    Old PSU: Zoostorm LPA 300C

    Motherboard: GA-H61M-S2PV

    RAM: Crucial 2x4GB (8GB), DDR3, 240 PIN, PC3

Ive had a problem for years with my desktop pc and I think I've finally narrowed down the problem. I was hoping for some help on what to do next.

A few years ago I noticed a problem with my pc where sleep mode stopped working correctly. It would go into sleep fine but when I tried to wake it, the fan (not sure which one) would come on full speed with no display. I had to shut it down by holding the power button and rebooting. So I stopped using sleep mode.

A few months later and I shut my pc down only to remember I forgot to do something, so I turn it back on a few minutes later. The same thing happens. Fan on full speed with no display. Now I can't turn on my PC within ~2 hours of turning it off.

Due to these startup problems I ended up getting a corrupted drive and had to format.

Long story short, I tried everything to figure out what the problem was, except change the PSU. I just assumed that because the CPU was only a year or so old, that it would never be the problem.

Last night for some reason I thought I would try my old PSU to see what happens, and it fixed the problem .The shutting down problem at least, I didn't test the sleep issue. I presume that's fixed too. The only problem is my old PSU is very loud and doesn't have the right connections.

My warranty has now ran out on my newer PSU and I was just looking for opinions on what to do next. I opened it up and, from my untrained eye, it looks fine. I presume buying a new PSU is the obvious answer but I was wondering if there were any settings in the BIOS which could cause one PSU to perform differently from another? I'm sure there was a power cut a few years ago and some of the BIOS settings were reset. I had to change something to get the hard drive working again and I was wondering if something similar could affect the PSU too.

    Thanks for any help.

[Video Inside] My start menu has been doing this for a while now, weird huh?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:16 AM PST

My start menu in Win10 does this

I've rebooted several times. I've made sure my GPU is running ok. I play games a lot, GPU has never had a problem. This has been going on for a while, I've put up with it because my PC runs great otherwise. My start menu has probably looked like this for two weeks now. I use my PC maybe 8 hours a day no problem, just weird start menu. Menu works fine, just visually weird.

Anything I should be concerned about? Any way to make it stop? Makes me worried, I try to take good care of my machine.

Strange problem where my computer will restart, but will resume right where I left it instead of having a fresh start; the task bar also will seem to freeze every other restart.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 03:08 AM PST

    Hey guys,

This issue started maybe 2-3 months ago, it wasn't always like this, but now every time I restart it seems more like it went to sleep because instead of everything being closed when it reloads it will reload everything that was previously up (chrome tabs, task bar, other things that aren't start up programs). That wouldn't really bother me if it didn't perma-disable the task bar. About 1/2 or 1/3 of the times it'll start up and I can Alt-Tab and click the task bar, but the other 1/2 or 2/3 of the time it won't allow me to Alt-Tab or touch the task bar. The task bar also stays up during fullscreen videos and it's quite annoying. Any help is much appreciated thanks you!

    W10 ntoskrnl 100% GPU Spikes

    Posted: 03 Jan 2018 02:55 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've got a weird issue which I've been experiencing lately. I have been noticing that my laptop locks up a lot, in such a way that I cannot even move the mouse. This happens intermettently but quite often, say once a minute.

I've been monitoring my task manager and noticed that the system process (ntoskrnl) spikes the GPU usage to 100% for a split second when the lag appears, I have no idea what could be causing this to happen and it's quite annoying as its slowing down my workflow.

    Specs are as follows: - HP elitebook 840 G2 - Intel i5-6200U CPU with Intel HD 520 GPU - 8GB Ram - Windows 10 Enterprise 64Bit - 3 monitors @ 1080p - (1x laptop display, 2x external monitors connected through USB hub).

    Any help is appreciated.

My games are lagging whenever I move my mouse.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 10:50 PM PST

You can see it here: https://youtu.be/nMMVUtB83bU

If I am using a gamepad or only keyboard, games don't lag at all but whenever I use the mouse it starts lagging.

It gets worse everyday and it's a recurring issue, even after clean wipes and reinstall of Windows 10.

For some reason, last week, it got better after I used Defragment and Optimize drives option in Windows, but now even that doesn't help. I analyzed my system with MSI Afterburner: https://imgur.com/vu4hVNL (everything seems fine)

Specs: AB350M, Ryzen 5 1600, G.Skill RipJaws 2x8GB DDR4 and GTX 1070. A new HDD and an older SSD (both of them analyzed and appear to be fine).
