Help! I tried to install a new power supply, instead I think I killed my PC Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:54 PM PST Today I got a new power supply to power the graphics card I got for Christmas. It's a 400w EVGA so it's not excessively powerful or anything. Installing it was a bit confusing at first, but from what I gathered from the Internet, you basically just have to make sure all the components in your PC are hooked up with the corresponding connectors on the wires. Well I hooked everything up as best as I could see but my PC won't turn on. The power indicator on the motherboard turns on when I plug in the cable but the PC itself does not respond. I have unplugged and re-plugged all the connections several times and tried every possible combination with the available wires (there are 5 or 6 SATA connectors all hooked up together) and no luck. So, thinking I might have got a defective unit, I tried hooking my old power supply back up and now that doesn't work either. Up until this point the most complicated thing I've ever done with the hardware was install a wifi PCI card. I am in way over my head and I'm afraid I may have completely ruined my computer. I'm sorry if this is all a jumbled mess but I'm having a mild anxiety attack at the moment because I can hardly afford any repairs let alone a new machine. If anyone needs any more information please let me know and I will do the best I can. I just really need some help here! [link] [comments] |

Windows will only use 3.9/16GB RAM. (Showing as hardware reserved memory) Posted: 03 Jan 2018 02:21 PM PST Hey, hoping you guys could help me with a RAM issue I'm having. I only noticed this today; I don't know how long it has been happening for, but it has definitely worked normally before. Windows will only use 3.9GB of RAM. Task manager is showing that I have 16 GB installed, but only part of it is usable, the rest said to be "hardware reserved memory". I am running Windows 10 Home Insider Preview 64-bit. I have two 4 GB sticks and one 8 GB stick, both are HyperX Fury. I've tried clearing the max memory in msconfig with no success. BIOS shows 16GB of working RAM, so I'm guessing (and hoping) it's a software problem. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated, as I'm stuck on what to do now. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:46 AM PST My pc used to boot up in only 15-17 seconds but now it takes almost 30. The OS is installed on an SSD and I have also another 1TB HDD. I've looked for start-up programms and removed some of them but it still takes too much time imo. What can I do? [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 Start Button doesn't work. Task Host is stopping restart Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:43 PM PST Clean install of windows 10 from install USB on new SSD today. System initially had high cpu usage. Did Update troubleshoot. Troubleshooter found errors, and after restarting and troubleshooting again, Troubleshooter uninstalled/reinstalled updates. Troubleshooter claimed to fix problems. System seemed to work fine. Low CPU, etc. After restarting, if I sign in with a pin, the start button doesn't work, rgt clicking start button to open settings/control panel doesn't work, cortana circle doesn't work, restarting says "Task host is stopping system from restarting" or something similar. As suggested online, Upon signing out and resigning in with PASSWORD instead of PIN everything seems fine. This seems like an issue that many people have had. Has anyone figured out a solution? Per known problems with win10: I've stopped Superfetch, windows search, and windows updates. turned off fast start. etc... [link] [comments] |
Android phone(s5) fully working except screen is black; how to mirror it? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:38 AM PST It cracked a month ago after i dropped it and the new lcd/touchpad/screen is terrible and cracked a few days ago. I didn't drop it; the crack started in the center from pressure i believe. Then the lcd started flashing and going black and is now black. It still 100% works because i can see the notification light turn off when i press my phone's on button. I also get haptic feedback when drawing my unlock pattern on the black screen and then i am effectively using my phone except i can't see what i'm doing. I get sound and light notifications still aswell. Do i have to replace the screen again? Is this an error on my part or the person who repaired it originally? Is there a way to mirror the screen even though i can't allow usb debugging or unlock the phone(my pattern is hard to get right when i can't see it)? TIA :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:56 PM PST Built PC, was acting sluggish. Pentium II sluggish. Updated to windows 10 per the message of unsupported hardware for the CPU. Still sluggish. Get better 1080ti card, get everything installed. Running great otherwise. Decide to mount it on the rack before bed, get everything mounted. Damn thing won't boot. 1089ti card has power indicator LEDs. They just blink white. CPU fan doesn't start. PSU fan won't turn on. Card fans won't start. Plug the cards into my server and they light up like they should. H110 still won't boot without the cards. When it was running, the memory read ok. Pins on CPU socket aren't bent. I need help. No option for 1080p in assassins creed game? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:55 PM PST Hey guys I'm trying to play assassins creed unity in 1080p but for whatever reason this game doesn't seem to have any options above 720p. I know for sure my TV and PC can play 1080 games as I've played hundreds on it already and they all had a option for 1080p. I've been googling all night and I've already gone through 4 pages of google search results. Here's what I've tried so far...
Someone mentioned that because my tv is 1080i and not 1080p that it won't be able to play games in 1080, but as I mentioned I have played games in 1080 before. Also if I am being limited because of my tv, why am I being limited to 720 and not something a bit higher but still under full 1080p? [link] [comments] |
Plug a headset into my pc build? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:44 PM PST I have a Sennheiser pair of headphones which have an inline mic. Just built a PC and wondering if it is possible to use the inline mic. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
How to download intel wifi drivers on usb? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:42 PM PST My laptops wifi card died recently and showed code 43 in the device manager, which isn't specific. Since its a laptop, I can't remove the card, and restarting the laptop hasn't worked. Tried to get drivers onto a USB to update drivers, but the intel software they direct you to only lets you download stuff for devices on the pc/laptop. How would I get the drivers on my laptop that can no longer connect to the internet? Or if I'm going about this wrong, what's the actual way to fix the problem? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:38 PM PST EDIT: Note that I'm on Windows 7 and DISM won't work Booted up my desktop for the first time in about 3 weeks. It was incredibly slow on startup, I'm guessing because it was updating things. I don't remember why but I restarted my computer, and then it wouldn't even boot. It said something was corrupted with some sort of hardware, but everything seemed to work fine. I just had to wait really long trying to start it in safe mode, and now it's fine except a decent amount of things are kinda broken. I'm guessing I restarted my computer at a bad time? For one, I don't have any internet at all. I can't use wi-fi or LAN. If I go to Network and Sharing Center, it just shows this. So I go to services.msc, some things just won't start. Network Location Awareness (which I'm assuming is part of the problem) can't start because of this error: "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion." So my guess was that there are corrupt windows files, and based off my sfc /scannow there definitely are several corrupt files but it won't fix them. It's especially a problem since I don't have internet on the computer. I could transfer any necessary files from another computer, but I don't know what files I need exactly and where I can get them. Does anyone know how to fix this? I actually have no clue how to fix this. I usually end up fixing stuff like this pretty quickly, but I've been working at this for like 3 hours. [link] [comments] |
MicroSD card "requires formatting", but I need the files off it Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:38 AM PST Hello everyone, I have a microSD card I keep in my dashcam and I wanted to save its contents. I pulled it off the camera and plugged it into my computer with a card reader. At first, I could see all of the files and folders and such, but as soon as I attempted to copy any of the files, it told me that I needed to insert a disk into the drive. I tried re-inserting the drive into the USB port, but then it said I needed to insert a disk into the drive. I don't quite remember what happened afterwards, but eventually, it said the drive needed to be repaired after inserting the reader in again, so I clicked on it. Go figure, it then said the drive needed to be reformatted before use, which has happened before. I want to avoid losing the files though. Chkdsk tells me it's a RAW drive type. I've looked at suggestions about changing the drive letter (still says it needs reformatting, and before that, still said to insert a disk into the drive), trying drive recovery program (one was specifically for hard drives so that didn't work, and Recuva says it's an invalid drive, so it didn't bother to even try), and scanning for viruses (no viruses found throughout the computer). I'm 99% certain this card isn't bricked considering I played a file off it before attempting to copy the files, so I doubt the card is simply damaged. I'd bet that if I let it format the card, it'd work again, but I'd like to avoid that. Any suggestions? This has been driving me insane and because I work with a lot of high capacity SD cards, I'm worried it will happen again (it has before). Edit: Also, I tried other SD cards and they work fine, so the card reader is OK. [link] [comments] |
How can I switch from ide to ahci and still have windows 10 boot? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:35 AM PST When I put ahci I get inaccessible boot device error. I need to set it to ahci because apparently iAtkos ML2 only runs in ahci mode when trying to run Mac osx in virtualbox. [link] [comments] |
Dell XPS 8100 CPU Cooler Not Making CPU Contact Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:32 AM PST I recently acquired an old XPS 8100 from a friend. Replaced the PSU and everything POSTs fine. However, I noticed the CPU fan would ramp up to full speed and hold, but the system would stay on. I looked at my cooler first, the stock Dell cooler, and realized there was about a quarter inch of space between the CPU and Cooler. I took off the cooler and there was no paste on it at all, just on the chip. I remounted it and couldn't get them to make contact, not only because of the height of the mounting posts but also because I assume the surrounding capacitors are too tall and too close, even if the posts were shorter. I looked up too see if it was an aftermarket cooler but it seems to be the same stock Dell cooler. Any ideas what's going on? Am I doing something wrong? https://imgur.com/dstQtlb https://imgur.com/etlBKVs [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:28 AM PST How do I stop this? I recently changed house and it's still happening. Discord, Google, PayPal, pretty much everything asks me to verify that i'm not a robot. I'm even banned for 4chan for "VPN exit node", despite never using a VPN to access it. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2018 09:32 PM PST Tonight my GroupMe was hacked and messages of a malicious variety were sent to all the contacts the app had access to (I will try to post a screenshot of one of the messages). I had scarcely used my phone in the hour and a half prior to being hacked, so I don't believe it was any explicit action on my part that immediately triggered the hack. The groupme app appears to be the only thing affected at the moment. Please let me know if anyone have seen this issue before and what I could do solve this issue and protect myself. I would also like to know what the link leads to but do not have the proper anti-malware software on any of my devices to safely open the link. I could not stop the messages from being sent so in order to contain the issue, I deleted both my account and the app from my phone. Link to screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/jTFRs [link] [comments] |
Indesit DFG15B1 dishwasher not working properly Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:58 AM PST Hi! I have a problem with my Indesit DFG15B1 dishwasher, where when I turn on the machine and set the program and start it, after a couple of minutes the salt indicator light starts to rapidly flash in red and the machine does not finish the washing cycle. This error is random, there are times when for days or even a couple of weeks it works just fine and then suddenly it starts to display this error and we just don't know what to do in this case. Any advice or fix to this problem would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Windows Defender detected a Trojan. Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:45 PM PST Windows defender notification randomly popped up saying I have a Trojan, I went to Windows Defender and did a scan, it detected nothing. I scanned with Malwarebytes and that AV detected nothing. The notification popped up again, I clicked it. The Trojan was quarantined and I removed it. I have no idea what the name of the Trojan was, but it began with "Windows" if that helps. The threat level was severe. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Computer attempting to start then stops. Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:56 AM PST I have been wanting to build a computer for ages and finally started a few days ago. Ive put everything into place and went to start up the computer. The led's all lit up for a second and some of the fans managed a half rotation then everything died. The fans that managed to rotate are all fans that connect directly to the power supply. Fans connected to the motherboard did nothing. This to me made it seem like a motherboard issue. The original motherboard was second hand from a friend and cost me nothing so I ordered a new one which arrived today. I put everything together and again had the exact same issue. So Im assuming that means its a PSU issue however I know at least some of the fans are getting power along with the graphics card as it as a green power light. Any help would be great and if it would be any use I have a video of what happens when i start it up. I am manually able to make it minimized and there is no option in the UI to have it start minimized. How can I overcome this problem to have the program open minimized at Windows 7 startup? Robot voice talking through my speakers..Virus? Help! Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:00 AM PST So I was on 4chan lol. Due to this crypto craze I was searching through biz for some news on the hottest cryptos. When all of a sudden I hear a "robot" sounding voice calling me a fag over and over. I thought it was coming from my browser so I closed my browser. But it just kept going on and on with all apps closed. I ended up shutting off my computer and restarting it. It was gone when I went back on my pc. I ran malwarebytes,a vast, and superantispyware. They all couldn't pick up anything. What was that? I looked up viruses sounds like a virus called blackshades or a rat. I'm not sure though. I don't know what's going on and it's kind of freaking me out about using my pc now. What do I do? HELP!
