What are your prefered ways to share and transfer files between devices? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:14 AM PDT I am planning to buy a new computer, and I need to find the easiest solution to transfer the data from my old PC to a new one. So I made a list of options I can use for transferring files. File transfer can be done using an external hard drive. Simply connect the PC to HD using a USB cable, drag and drop files, then repeat the process in the opposite direction to copy files to the new device. The only disadvantage of this method is that you need to either have a hard drive or buy one, which is not what I really fancy spending money on. You can connect two Windows devices using a USB connecting cable. You do need to download the drives that will support this connection. Then you must download the software to start transferring files. This is a direct connection that doesn't need an intermediate device like an external HD. But it does need additional software. The final method is sending files via the Internet. Most people use file-hosting services like OneDrive and Dropbox. The cons of these services are compulsory registration and limits on the free storage options. So I searched for less known cloud services and discovered there are quite a few free and fast ways to send files. The first one is https://fastupload.io/. You can upload files onto this server free of charge, and you can upload as many files as you want at a time. The system generates links, and you can use these links later to download your files. The main advantage of this method is that you can upload the files in advance and download them whenever you want. If you want something faster, use file.pizza peer-to-peer app. To use it, you must have both devices ready for the transfer – as soon as one device starts uploading files, the second one starts downloading. What are the other methods that I missed? Are there more free of charge file-transfer services? [link] [comments]
Shopping around for new wifi gear Posted: 28 Apr 2022 11:19 PM PDT I've been using a Ubiquiti Amplifi for about the past 3 years. What I was reading at the time is that the Unifi gear required a dedicated control and other additional equipment. That may be inaccurate, but it's one of the reasons I went with the consumer-focused Amplifi and I'm not very impressed with it. It's recently been causing some problems and it's a good excuse to justify purchasing some new wifi gear to my wife. I know people rave about Unifi gear but my experience with the Amplifi and some of the bad press Ubiquiti has had leave me wanting to do a bit more research on my options. I'm running an opnSense based router so I'm not afraid of having to do some config as long as there isn't a lot of ongoing maintenance to go along with it. I want more control than typical consumer gear typically allows for. For example, I have some IoT devices I'd like to keep segregated from the rest of my devices. But I'm not going to run an authentication server or anything like that so I don't need full-on enterprise features. I'm really looking for the equipment to be stand-alone as well. As long as the AP has decent range, I can probably cover my home with a single AP but might find I need to add a second AP later. Besides Unifi gear, Rukus is the other name I've heard thrown around. Are there others? Who has a good balance of configurability while allowing for stand alone AP operation where I don't need anything more than the AP? [link] [comments]
How can I use a different router if my ISP doesn't allow bridge mode ? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:48 PM PDT Hello! I've been trying to figure this out for quite a while now and I'd be very grateful for any insight. Honestly I'm a bit lost because this is completely new to me, and at times it feels like I'm hitting a wall because I'm lacking basic knowledge. The main reason I want to use a different router is because I'm experiencing absolutely terrible bufferload. Basically my ping jumps from 60ms to 1000+ when a device uses the network for downloading (Twitch and YouTube are fine for example, but the smallest download will paralyse the whole network for the others. The same goes for a speedtest or Netflix, it's really weird). So I've come to the conclusion that I should have a better QOS and that using QOS algorithms such as Fq_Codel or Cake would be my best bet. This didn't seem very hard but I'm facing one big problem: my IPS modem/router doesn't allow bridge mode, only leaving me with the options of DMZ and double NAT. However I've been reading that DMZ can be quite dangerous security wise (although I've also read that if your router firewall is well maintained it should be fine ?) and double NAT can cause problem in video games, which I want to avoid. Is there any solution to my problem ? Or am I only left with the DMZ route ? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:15 AM PDT I am desperately looking for a new switch for my home office, being located in Australia there does not seem to be anything in stock or suitable anymore. It's as if the entire 10G market has been abandoned in favour of getting 25G and 100G into enterprise. I thought my requirements were pretty reasonable, I need something with around 8-12 802.3bz capable ports that can hit 10G, basic L2 features and ideally a consumer form factor (not looking for a 10yo arista with demon fans and 1.5kW idle draw). I don't really like nbase-t but it's looking like 2.5/5G is going to be the defacto for the next 30 years until either WiFi supersedes ethernet altogether or the consumer market is flooded with 10G suddenly (which I don't see ever happening) so I need to be able to support whatever nonsense comes along. I did find the following but can't actually get one:
As far as I can tell none of the other vendors are even considering 802.3bz, not that I'm interested as these devices are usually well over $5k for the luxury of having a couple of 100G slots. That also seems to be another failing in the market where none of these affordable products have any reasonable uplink ports, given the cost of nvme storage and the speeds modern (but not expensive) cpu's and their buses are capable of now it's completely reasonable to look at 25G or even 100G for consumer use and yet we're still stuck with 100MB/s transfer caps between devices, even USB of all things is vastly superior. Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:31 AM PDT is there anyway to hide device on the home wifi? what if I were to get a wifi extender and we're to connect to that, would it show up on the gateway wifi that there device connect to the gateway is connected to the gateway itself. Are there any tricks to not show up the device on the internet. I know that the device must show up to receive packets but if one were to go on the xfi app , how could I make my device not show up or if it does chow up how do I remove the device information such as the version, brand, etc. [link] [comments]

How to run ethernet on exterior wall Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:27 PM PDT I want to run either from upstairs to downstairs thru the wall. I can only run the cable on the exterior wall. I went ahead and cut the drywall upstairs and downstairs making sure they're between the same studs. I didn't think there would be insulation downstairs bc half the wall is underground. Turns out there's insulation :/ Would I have to run the Ethernet thru the outside of the house? Or is there a way to fish my wire downstairs that doesn't require removing insulation? CenturyLink C844G ONT - Ethernet ports not working/Can I use a Modem with COAX? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 11:10 PM PDT Moved into a new place with a Calix C844G ONT and a bunch of Ethernet/COAX outlets around the place. None of the Ethernet ports are connected. (The lines are cut and hanging by the ONT). This means I either run a 30ft cable from my closet to my living room to set up a router or use one of the COAX cable outlets. I tried connecting a Netgear CM1000 to a COAX and only got about 400 mbps from the COAX connection. What kind of modem could I use to connect to a COAX connection and get 1000mbps or close to it? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 11:55 AM PDT I recently added a pro switch with SFP+ ports. Unfortunately, I cannot get them to work at all at advertised speeds. The wierd thing is, each time a transceiver is used, my network connection speed is halved. I have 1.4GBps internet, but for the sake of testing i am connecting this to 1gb port on the switch, I just want to get 1gbps, at the very least as a baseline. So, with my Comcast xb7 connected to pfsense 10gb Intel NIC, which is then connected to my Unifi pro switch at a 1gb port. Speed tests to my workstation I get 900+ Mbps. Great. That fine. Now, I connect the pfsense cable from the 1gb port in the switch to the SFP+ port using a transceiver and now my speeds are ~400 Mbps. Half of what they were before. I have a 10gb NIC also in my workstation, the above test was using the native 1gb port for sale of testing. Now of I connect that 10gb NIC to the switch with another transceiver to a 2nd SFP+ port and run the test from this, my speed is halfed again and is now 200 MBps. I've tried my old H!Fiber transceivers that worked with my older XG-16. I've tried the Wii-tek transcieves the forum recommended. Same behaviour. I just tried the mikrotik transceivers everyone swear by, same behaviour. I have jumbo frames and flow control enabled at the switch. I have also tried setting the SFP+ port to 10gb and also auto negotiation (as well as doing this on the pfsense port side). No difference, same speed degradation. If someone could help I'd really be appreciative. The reason I bought the pro was for the SFP+ ports and they just don't work. Or at least, I cannot get them to. [link] [comments]
Application to test internet speeds at selected dsl sites Posted: 28 Apr 2022 02:23 PM PDT Hey there. I am currently trying to test internet speeds at selected homes. The project is for the city to look if the homes get the expected internet download (and maybe upload) speeds. It should be logged and automated to start the test frequently. My friend did this a while ago with a server which is at a 10gbit/s WAN and simple raspberry pis at selected sites (private homes from guys who accepted to test their speeds). The Pis simply downloading a file and a formula calculates with the time it takes to download the file and the size of it what the WAN internet speeds at their sites is. I thought about a script like iperf3 to a google server which test the download and upload speeds and monitor it with zabbix or checkmk. any suggestion how to realise that? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
[Q] Please recommend inexpensive but reliable 10GbE PCI-E NICs for home use? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:10 AM PDT Hi, I am looking for inexpensive 10GbE NICs to add to my home servers. 10 gbps prosumer router / wifi solution?? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:06 PM PDT I'm looking for a 10gbps router solution, now that I have a 10gbps connection coming into my house. Right now I have the GTAX11000, one as the main router, one as a mesh node. It has only 1 2.5gbp port. I need several ports as I want to hard wire into my desktop and then create and ethernet back haul to the other node. What is out there that could replace this, that may be even better? Also, is there a way to buy a new high end or pro-consumer type of router without WIFI, and then use the GTAX11000's just for the wireless. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:10 PM PDT My RT-ACRH13 has been a workhorse for 5+ years. With fiber 1gb up/down it regularly reached 118MB/s down from Steam. It recently started its death spiral, requiring a restart every day to restore functionality, so I picked up an RT-ACRH18 expecting it to perform similarly. After setting it up, I noticed download speeds were much slower than expected, averaging around 70MB downloading from Steam. I switched over to the ACRH13 and resumed the download which quickly climbed to over 110MB/s. I did this a few more times just to be certain, and each time was the same. ``These were network speeds, not file transfer speeds that Steam displays when moving/verifying data. I checked the hardware specs of both routers and while similar, the ACRH18 uses a MediaTek ethernet controller while the 13's is from Qualcomm. Is this enough to cause such a difference in wired speeds, or could it be something else? [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:44 PM PDT TP link's looks like a close call; it's much cheaper but I always imagined that eero's app would blow this ones out of the water. The whole experience, really. Internet dummy question about WAN and LAN Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:38 PM PDT Hello please help me understand why certain routers have a 10g LAN port but only a 2.5g WAN port? Isn't WAN the port where the internet comes in and LAN the port where the internet comes out of? Why is a 10g needed when only 2.5 comes in? Thanks i know it's probably a stupid question but i have no one to ask about this [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Apr 2022 10:33 AM PDT This question is more for "considering my options" than anything else. But my grandmother's house has a problem where aside from the electrical wires, most of the wiring outlets didn't seem to work. The other day, I was attempting to move my Spectrum service over to her house while I crash there for a month or two (Waiting on a tax refund + security deposit from the apartment before I fully move). And for whatever reason, Spectrum insisted on sending a tech out. Well when he checked the wiring, he went into the attic and found that all the non-electric wires on the side of the house with unusable non-electrical wires actually had all of the said wires cut, rendering all of the outlets useless. And the attic on that side of the house is actually so low down that, combined with the nails sticking down due to the shingles on said house, it's impossible to physically reach into that side of the house. Because of this, the outlet we intended to use is unusable. Is there a way to push a coaxial or ethernet wire over into such spaces that I am unaware of? There is a functional coaxial elsewhere, though we intended to use one on said "dead" side of the house due to it being a more convenient spot for a computer. And the only idea I got is hiring someone with a trained ferret to run the cable... which is kind of out of reach at this time. (We cannot cut new holes, due to concerns about the age of the house) [link] [comments]
AiMesh node: RT-AC68U or AC66U b1? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 05:35 PM PDT Hello, I got a Asus RT-AX86U as main router, and noticed I have bad/no-connection to some of the rooms on the other side of the house. I have one cable dragged thru the wall to the room right outside the room that i got no signal in (great signal strenght), so was thinking of instead of adding a switch and make a hole in the wall and then branch of with cables all over the room, I would just buy a second aimesh router to extend the wifi range from there as I heard AiMesh router supported wired "backtracking" to main router via eternal. Would a RT-AC68U or a AC66U b1 work? can get the ac68u second hand for about 50 bucks and the ac66u b1 for 30. Bonus question: Can you connect eternals cables to the AiMesh node and use it as switch or will the AiMesh only work for wireless? [link] [comments]
Question about my ISP disabling the wifi signal on modem Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:22 AM PDT Hey everyone, am looking to disable my wifi signal from the modem of my ISP, but the thing is that I cannot access the modem myself (they blocked that option) so i would have to call them and ask for that, but my question in regards of this, is the following: i have my TP Link AX55 router connected to my ISP modem, if they disable the signal from the modem, will the wifi signal on my router would be disable too? Or this is totally independent from my router and my dual band channels set up would be intact? I want to get rid from the ISP wifi because i don't use it and also because is just there and making more noise on the 2.4 band and 5G. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this a dumb question.
