[DEV] New Android App: jtx Board - Journals, Notes and Tasks tracking (via VJOURNAL + VTODO) + syncable via CalDAV

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:23 PM PDT

jtx Board is the first and only app on Android that can track Journals and Notes via the open protocol VJOURNAL. It also offers Tasks via VTODO, which is more common. The great thing about this (besides being open source ;)) that you can combine Journals, Notes and Tasks with each-other and have a very wide variety of use cases to track stuff.

    Announcment on Twitter by DAVx⁵

DAVx5 (a CalDAV/CardDAV/WebDAV Client - also open source) has had a collaboration with jtx Board to bring that to live and thus you can synchronize it via CalDAV with your own server, which is super nice - so all the data stays where you decide it should.

Compatibility list of tested servers that support VJOURNAL

Hint: If you want to try it create a syncable collection/calendar that supports VJOURNAL storage via DAVx5 (in the Account → CalDAV settings).

Both apps are available on r/fdroid and other stores.

We (DAVx⁵ developers) are really excited about this, since it took almost a year from the idea (okay I must admit we had the idea already many years ago) to bringing that to the people while also promoting open protocols and enhancing interoperabilty! And we are happy to help and provide more details here in case of questions :)

[Supercasts] Follow up to release post a few days ago

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 01:37 AM PDT

    Hey guys and girls.

I made a post a few days ago regarding the release of my app Supercasts:

    Supercasts - Google Play

I just wanted to say thank you for all the amazing feedback!
And i wanted to say that i read all of it and want to implement as much of the features and suggestions as i possibly can.

Therefore I've also made a Telegram group to discuss and talk about Supercasts:

    https://t.me/supercasts

Another user suggested OPML import/export, which I've now implemented, and will be in the next release, which I've just sent to Google for approval.

Does anyone remember what the name of the app that could turn websites into apps?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:18 PM PDT

For example, you would open the app and turn the facebook or twitter website into an app that would show up on the homescreen. I know that this is possible with using something like the chrome app, bit I remember liking the app better. Just can't remember the name of it and I've had a hard time it online. Thank you

I used to love the tsf and next launcher. They at least had a unique feel. There are no good alternatives. Does anyone know if they're coming back?

MP3 player/playlist that can select by year?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:45 PM PDT

Most MP3 players let you sort and filters by song title, album name, artist, and genre. I've yet to find one that lets you play, say, songs from 2000. Anybody know of one?

Alternatively, what about an app (on any platform) that lets you create a playlist based on the ID3 tag for year — so you could make one for the '90s with only songs from 1990-99.

And are you aware of any MP3 player that lets you put the year on its "currently playing" screen?

[DEV] Released Subcap: Captions for Videos CC

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 07:46 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm one of the developers of this app! It's newly released on Android so it's free for a limited time!

Subcap is a mobile app that makes videos readable with auto subtitles. Subcap's auto-captions maker uses artificial intelligence to generate subtitles in 125 languages and variants. Subtitles can be added in different colors, fonts, or positions.

We've realized that making all videos readable would be great for not only the deaf community but also everyone who uses social media actively. We have discovered the need for such an application that makes auto subtitles easily and quickly and supports many languages. With all these thoughts and dreams, we have created this app.

So, what are the benefits of adding subtitles to your videos?

    More than you think:

✅ Get 17% more reactions compared to non-subtitled videos

✅ Get 26% more CTA clicks compared to non-subtitled videos

✅ Get 35% more viewers compared to non-subtitled videos

✅ Engage with 85% of viewers who don't have their sound on

✅ Make your contents accessible to more than 400 million deaf people

✅ Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and more. Stories, ads? Them too.

✅ Get more clicks, sales and conversions

✅ Don't waste your time on adding subtitles manually

Please check it out, we'd love to get feedback from you :)

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ratel.subcap

If you like the app, please show some support by upvoting or sharing subtitled videos on all social media platforms and using the hashtag #subcapapp or tagging subcapapp.

Do any of this battery testing apps really work?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 09:19 AM PDT

I just bought a phone that was used. It's the exact same phone that are already have as my current one. My new phone got broke so I bought another one, but now the battery on this one doesn't last as long as my last one. Is there an app that shows the life or can test the health of the actual battery that really works?

    Conditional Reminders App

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 11:30 AM PDT

I've been trying to find an app that will let me setup conditional reminders so that remembering to take my medications isn't such a pain. For instance if I take my morning medications, I need to wait an hour before taking another medication, and then I have to wait four hours after taking that before I can take anything else. Every pill reminder app that I've tried has been absolute garbage and more annoying than helpful to the point where I uninstall them after a while. I've tried looking through the endless reminders apps for Android but I've never found anything that does what I need. I'm willing to pay a reasonable subscription fee if necessary. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Podcast catcher to replace Pocketcasts?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:31 AM PDT

It's been my main podcast app, but has repeatedly given me problems. Frequently, it downloads podcasts while on my mobile data, but my data is metered, so I only want it to do so over wifi. I've changed the settings to reflect this, but somehow they fuck it up over and over again. Beyond that, now podcasts won't replay after being paused once. I'll hit the play button, it changes to pause, then stops without ever starting to play.

I'm just sick of the app and ready to give another a try. I'm pro-FOSS, so that would be great, but not required. I have Podverse, which is decent, but could be better.

    Open to suggestions!

Downmix 5.1 sound to stereo with MX Player?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 08:42 AM PDT

Movie playback on my cheap knockoff Android box, using MX Player, is extremely quiet -- especially if the source file is .mkv. I've already switched the audio to SW but I suspect that we're looking at a problem with un-down-mixed audio. Anyone have any ideas? What additional information would be required to better help troubleshoot the problem?

App to deactivate second SIM card/calls from second sim card.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 05:52 AM PDT

Hi. I run Lineage OS 18.1 on my Oneplus 6. On Oxygen OS is possible to deactivate only on the sim card. I have recently found out that this option is not available on Lineage OS. I really need that so that I won't get work calls and use more battery.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/i2u573/not_possible_to_disable_one_sim_card_los_171_why

Is there any app that allows to do that or at least to deactivate any incoming call from the second sim card? Aeroplane mode is not an option as it will deactivate both sim cards.

    Many thanks

    Is Typesave worth the money?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:09 AM PDT

I've been interested in this app but I wanted to ask about your experience using it. How is the battery consumption? Does the app work consistently? Does it interfere with any software function? Is it useful purchase? Most importantly is the project abandoned? The lastest update was on 9 Jan 2020.

    Thanks in advance

What's your favorite News app and why?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2022 03:01 PM PDT

I've been looking into the different Android news apps that are out there, and I'm wondering what everyone thinks is the best news app they've found.

Personally, I've already tried: * Feedly * Inoreader * Flipboard * Google News * Microsoft Start

Personally I think the first two are the best, because they offer the most customizability of your feeds, so you can pay closer attention to what you want to see, and see less of what you don't care about.

But let me know what you think. What is your favorite news/feed reader app and why?

My phone died tonight and upon checking my battery usage, I can see that over half was consumed by Google Messages. It was also using a large amount of battery power before 10, and I was asleep at that time! Any idea what's going on here?
