Looking for a laptop that fits many different needs.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:01 AM PDT

I'm in the market for a new a laptop that fits certain requirements:

    - Gaming, mostly oldish games like Overwatch, Rocket League, R6

    - Programming, Java, SQL, PHP (nothing too crazy, if it can run the games listed above, it can probably code)

    - Work, I will also be using this laptop for work, and I work remotely so I need one with a webcam and mic and preferably has an HDMI port (although a USB C port works fine too)

    - Decent size, nothing overly big, preferably around 15" (not too fussed about resolution, 1080p is fine)

    - Decent keyboard, speakers, battery life and general laptop stuff. It would also be nice if the fan isn't crazy loud during general usage.

I have a budget of around £1000 ($1200), I don't know much about laptops so if anyone knows any laptops that fit these requirements that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Something similar to a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 11:02 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I think the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is an awesome laptop. Its powerful and its gotta a nice build quality with a good cooling system.

The only thing that bothers me is the weight at 5.39lbs. Any recommendations for a laptop with the same power and great cooling but a little less heavy

I considered the Asus ROG15 but its thin build may be cause of concern when playing high demanding games temperature wise. And it may not last as long being so thin.

    Thank You!

    Recommendations for laptops

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 10:06 PM PDT

Starting college in 4 months and I think it's time for a laptop. First time I bought a laptop it was a 2020 MacBook air and piece of shit would stutter and freeze a lot with excessive heating from just opening chrome. I heard that some HP and dell suck because of certain life span of parts. At this point i'm wanting to get a gaming laptop because the parts are so well. I will just use it for more school work and projects and maybe some movies but that's all. ATM i'm using an old 2013 MacBook air so any recommendations would be nice!

    ($1200-Canada) Longevity and speed priority/ASUS

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:39 PM PDT

Master's student looking to try Asus brand, mainly for Internet surfing and productivity app use. Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 1. Performance and quality 2. Battery 3. Form factor (basic clamshell, NO touchscreen or 360/flipbook) How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very. Less than 5lbs is ideal but not necessary. Do you have a preferred screen size? 14" or 15" Are doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.* None If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*
    None

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.* I admit I dont know much about laptops, but I'd imagine extra "bells and whistles" like a touchscreen will only slow down a laptop, albeit how cool or interesting it might be. Looking for a simple but durable laptop I won't have to trash in 5 years. It's very alarming how after 3 or 4 years of good use, laptops slow down significantly. Tyia

I'm in the USA. I'd prefer to spend less than $500, because I'd like to save some money for a desktop too. I just need a laptop with a large display that I can take to class and take notes, use to do research and study, and I can install Office products such as Word and PowerPoint. I'll be starting my PhD in the fall, so I'd prefer a display that reduces eye strain since I'll be starting at it for long periods of time. Any recommendations?

Looking for a laptop under $600 that fits these criteria

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:09 PM PDT

I'm going to college in the fall and I'm in need of a laptop.

    • I seem to be a minority these days in that I don't mind a big, heavy laptop. I don't want it to flip or weigh .5 pounds, and touch screen definitely isn't a necessity.

    • I'm not picky about screen quality as long as it doesn't look awful

    • I know that big and heavy usually equates to poor battery life but if I could get at least 5 hours SOT I'll be happy

    • I'd like some decent sounding speakers

    • I'd really, really like a metal construction but at very minimum I need a sturdy, tough plastic body

    • 15-17 inches

    • I don't really play games so it doesn't have to be blazing fast, so long as it doesn't run like an hp stream...

    • My budget is around $600, and I don't mind buying yesteryears flagship if it fits my criteria

What are some of the best Windows laptops for 2022?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:02 PM PDT

Hello everyone! Looking for a new Windows laptop. I've previously come from a world of Lenovos, but am open to alternatives. Primary purpose of the laptop will be for working in spreadsheets. I do use a number of memory intensive applications, so would be looking for a device with at least 32GB RAM.

    Other than that, some preferences:

    - Love the Lenovo keyboards, but hate their trackpads (recently tried the X1E4)

    - Would love a very bright display. I also have the latest M1 Macbook so anything similar to this display.

    - Ideally something between 14-16 inch display. 16 may be on the slightly bigger side for me.

    - Charges via USB-C. One thing I disliked about the X1E4 was that it required a heavy duty charger.

    Thanks so much in advance!

    UK-based, budget around £500-700

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 03:43 PM PDT

Hey guys! My laptop just suddenly died on me and I'm a 3rd-year uni student with a dissertation due in 2 weeks who is pretty urgently looking for advice on a new laptop to get (I knew my laptop was on its last legs but I didn't know it would die on me, lol). I'd prefer one I could get from Curry's and go see in person but that's not a massive concern.

    • I'm not really fussed about form factor, I'd just like one with a decent amount of storage and battery life.
    • Weight/thinness wise I would like if it was light so I could transport it to classes/libraries but again, not a big priority - price is the main one really. Would prefer not to dip into high 600s but I'm also being reasonable
    • Not fussed about screen size either.
    • I'd like to use it to game, mainly for games such as: The Sims 4 (which these days takes up quite a bit of storage lol); Stardew Valley; Hades; Borderlands 2.
    • Touch-screen and shit like that isn't important.

I should be able to get to Curry's on Saturday so any advice before then would be much appreciated! As a brief tl;dr I'm a uni student who would like a laptop that I can take on campus that has good storage and battery life, doesn't sound like a plane taking off all the time, and has good memory to host a few games - it's not my main gaming device but my current one couldn't host TS4 after a while.

Thanks so much in advance. Any questions please lmk.

Best gaming laptop for small-medium games

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 06:27 PM PDT

My budget is around $500. I already have a decent PC to play CPU intensive games on but I am away from home often so I'm looking for a portable device to play smaller/older games decently. For example I'd use it for simulation/strategy/ older RPG games rather than the latest shooters or RPGs. Just trying to find the best bang for my buck! Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking for a laptop to do basic video editing + photoshop work on

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 05:07 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      I'd prefer less than $1.5K.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't really care for touch screen stuff. Performance is obviously a pretty big priority. Battery life doesn't matter much, if at all, since I'll mostly be using the laptop when it's plugged into a wall. 16 GB of RAM should fit me well.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Mildly important. I owned a MacBook Pro that was pretty heavy and uncomfortable; I'd prefer a medium weight laptop.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Whatever's standard. 14 inches? Somewhere around there.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video editing and photo editing. If I were to use the laptop for gaming, it'd be for non-intensive indie games.

For video editing, I plan to use Lightworks, and for photo editing, I've always just used Pixlr.com.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard. No touch screen. Finger print reader is not important. No optical drive. I won't be using the touchpad, I have a mouse.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm planning on recording gameplay with an Elgato using OBS. With my old laptop, this didn't work because the recorded video would be all choppy and missing frames, even if recording at just 720p at 30 FPS. I'm assuming a better laptop with a better CPU/GPU could fix that. Also, with Pixlr.com, I had issues that were apparently related to my low RAM (8 GB).

I'm really not planning to do any super intense edits, and I don't need anything more than a 1080p screen.

    Laptop for CS in university

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 04:21 PM PDT

I'll be going to University soon in order to study CS and hopefully get into software development, I'll also likely be doing some renders/ AutoCAD and running VMs. I've narrowed down my choices to a Zephyrus G14 or an older Dell Precision 7510/5520 with a Xeon chip (the 5520 and the G14 are roughly equal in price, with the 7510 being cheaper) — I am trying to determine whether it would be worth sacrificing the performance of a newer chipset for a workstation grade laptop, any advice?

Asus g14 3060, really considering buying it

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 03:58 PM PDT

I had an asus G14 with a 1660ti and 16gb ram and I loved it, especially the build quality and size. Unfortunately I shorted it(my fault) and now am looking for a laptop. I've looked at a BUNCH of laptops in person and none seem to have that same quality build as the g14.

Rn, there's a g14 with 3060 6GB, 16Gb ram, 1TB ssd, and 144hz screen selling for 1,999 CAD. I'm willing to drop that money because of how much I loved my g14. Is there any other laptop for that price with the same build quality and portability? Thanks!

      1000-2000 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

It's for work, battery life is not detrimental. I'd say around 7-8/10

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      NA

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      NA

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Power BI, Python, machine learning algorithms utilizing CUDA

Large data sets meaning 500+ million rows. To my (basic) understanding these are the recommended specs for such a computer:

CPU newer generation, minimum 4 core 12 threads recommended 8 core 16 thread or higher, high clock speed

CACHE MEMORY: 8mb RAM: 16gb minimum, maybe upgrade to 32. High bus speed

STORAGE: NVMe SSD or regular SSD with 512gb minimum, 1tb recommended

GPU: Nvidia minimum 4gb Windows 10 or 11

    Suggestions are much appreciated!

Long-Term computer science studies and work laptop.

I'm not looking at something super high end but not minimum spec either. Somewhere above average should be more than enough I think.

The university doesn't have any os requirements other than no Linux machines.

    Thank you.

Edit: Price isn't much of an issue as long as it's reasonable.

Which Dell XPS 15 should i get?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 02:15 PM PDT

    Hello,

My work has given me the ok to buy a new XPS 15 laptop at their expense. I am told to buy something 'reasonable' with no other restrictions. I'm guessing a budget of under $2,000 but no unnecessary spending on bells or whistles. No rush for a date to get(as I know delays), but I will likely need in next two months or so.

I currently have an XPS13 from 2015 (8 GB rams, i-5 6200) and it has worked well for me, but it's starting to show it's age and have issues. I have company specific windows software that I used (accounting software), but beyond that it is all basic stuff that I do (e-mails, youtube/netflix for flights, microsoft office) - no gaming. I do not want a touch screen. Has to be new, but doesn't have to be a new model.

    • Budget: less than $2,000
    • Must be new, but open to older models.
    • I travel a decent amount, so I want lightweight, but the 13" I use is a bit small (was thinking 14-15")

I am looking at the New Dell XPS15 i-7 but on the outlet this seems like a good deal

    https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UdQgPEoMlkToeP%2bo%2fwy4Bu8BdHFk4iSKNMGCSIOfFYKc2%2by4jjH05bf1wipa7t2ze1r94kYOM9svMMpWqw3oezsjIXnLHkjnYdpCFONxywS9MhQmTQDwczu5u7n24VINFIqDjhF%2fn5pKHx7sE1HELNWg007FUHg3BgHcw5Ww14j8h1V4Pd9Xfjmk%3d

    Any advice is appreciated.

UI/UX Design Device(s) for long term (school / work)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 01:46 PM PDT

    Hello!

I will be starting college next year and I'm interested in UX or UI design since I thoroughly enjoy my graphic design class and I'm learning quickly.

I currently have a chrome book - going 5 years strong, so to get ready for the new school year, I'm planning on getting a new device for college.

I'm thinking of either getting a laptop paired with an iPad, or maybe Samsung tablet since I've heard that it's better than the iPad? Please give me your thoughts on this.

Or I may get a 2 in 1 laptop, maybe the Lenovo Yoga 9i. But I'm also unsure about this since I've heard that 2 in 1s are less sustainable.

If not, I'm thinking of building my own desktop PC and using a tablet to bring to school.

I want an option that will serve me long term so I could probably use these devices in the future if I get a job.

I would appreciate any advice or anything from your experiences! Thank you!

*note: I've also seen websites and people on Reddit stating that UI and UX design is dying.. is this true? If so, why?

    Thank you :)

Laptop for game design & animation/pixel art work.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 01:07 PM PDT

Hi. Im U.S. student looking ti buy a laptop for primarily game design and coding. Will mainly be using Gamemaker studio 2 engine but might also dive into other apps such as unity, photoshop, after effects, etc.

Also will be doing animation and stuff on clip art / aesprite.

Some older games i play such as overwatch, call of duty black ops 1 and 2, street fighter 5 and tekken 7.

My old laptop only had 320gb and would constantly get maxed out.

Sceeen size dont matter but i like em kinda big and backlit keyboard is a must.

    500-800 dollar budget.

Doesnt have to be new but preferred. Stuff like resolution dont matter much to me. Just need it to be able to run blender and game studio and not shit it self.

Looking for some suggestions for a laptop for college, will be buying in August sales.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 12:57 PM PDT

Country and price: USA, ideally around or under $2000

    New or Refurb: New

I want decent build quality, good battery life and performance, and form factor doesn't matter

I don't care about weight, but ideally no more than 8-10 lbs.

    Would prefer 15-17 inch screen

I'll probably do programming, 3D modeling in Fusion and Blender, ECAD, game dev in Godot and Unity(though for intense stuff I do have a desktop). Also some light gaming, but not really.

Would like a good keyboard and trackpad

Would ideally want something with either an alder lake i7(1260p and 1280p, latter is more preferable but rare), or a ryzen 6800u. I don't know about graphics, but I doubt I'd need a top tier rtx card. I also want something with either 32gb ram if soldered, or upgradable. I learned some lessons with my current Asus Zenbook 14 (4500u, 8gb, mx350) because the ram is soldered and it can't easily run fusion. I'll probably be buying this in August, and will post again in July. I also want something with the quality to last 4-6 years.

    USA student laptop max $500

    Posted: 27 Apr 2022 12:48 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $350-$500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes love refurbished

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I just want a normal laptop (don't care about 2-in1, touchscreen, etc), build quality, performance, and battery life are all important to me, but if one has to be sacrificed it would be battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't care about weight, thin would be nice but not a must

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -15.6", but 12"-14" is fine

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-maybe a couple basic Steam games like Age of Empires, but nothing fancy

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    -nah I'm good

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-backlit keyboard! Love those, but if I have to buy one separately and put it in myself I will (I've done it before). I would just want it calculated in the budget

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current computer is an Acer Aspire e575 (1 TB hsd, 4gb RAM) I bought refurbished in 2017 and used all through college. I upgraded to a 256 SSD and did some other tweaks, and it's served me really well but age and wear and tear finally caught up to it and it's time to upgrade. I just bought an Acer Aspire 3 256 ssd with 8GB of RAM and Ryzen 3 3250U. I paid $400 for it refurbished. Is this a good buy for my needs? I still have time to return it. I also want to buy a backlit keyboard and that will be $30 so that pushes my overall cost to $430.

I'm planning on starting grad school in the spring and will probably be traveling a bit. I just want something somewhat fast and reliable, that can handle multiple student applications and occasional streaming. Thank you so much guys!!
