    Simple Questions - March 18, 2022

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:00 PM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

What's the best chair for someone who spends a lot of time on the computer and has a bad posture like me?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:20 PM PDT

I know this question has probably been asked a lot of times before, but I couldn't find an answer that suited my needs, so I thought I'd post my own thread.

    For some context:
    - Male. 5'9. 187 pounds. Average physical complexion.
    - I work from home, so I spend a lot of time in front of a computer, normally 8-10 hours a day.
    - I usually find myself unconsciously slouching. - I have a bad posture (not terrible, but still bad).
    - My job requires me to be creative, but creativity doesn't flow when my ass starts hurting after sitting for 30 minutes, so comfortability is my number one priority.

I've been looking at the Ikea Markus and the Staples Hyken (or any other chair from those brands, for that matter), but I haven't been able to decide which one is better for me. I know higher-end chairs like a Steelcase Leap or a Herman Miller Embody are probably a better choice, but I have a very limited budget of $400-$600, and I cannot buy a refurbished chair because those are not common in my country.

    What does Reddit suggest?

Is it worth upgrading from a 2070 Super to a 3070 TI

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 06:25 PM PDT

Title, got the opportunity to get a 3070 TI, wondering if it makes that much of a difference, specifically at 1440p gaming.

Upgrade my 2700x to 5X00x or Move to Intel?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:00 PM PDT

    I have a 2700x on an Rog Strix X470-F mobo with 32gb (2x16) 3000 CL15 ram. I just use the wraith cooler.

I want to upgrade my CPU and was thinking either the 5600x or 5800x though I started watching YT videos and a lot of people recommend the 11600k from Intel.

I do very little video/photo editing, no rendering. I mostly play indie games, a few AAA (almost never the newest) and Star Citizen. It seems like the smartest and cheapest thing to do is to get the 5600x, overclock it, and ride this set-up into the sunset for a few years.

Then in 4 or 5 years I can build a new computer (on DDR5) from the ground up. Does that sound like a decent plan? I am also upgrading my GPU soon too. but I don't think that any of these cpus will be a bottleneck. Will that RAM and mobo be okay with the 5X00s series? Also, if I get a 6700xt or 6800xt, will the mobo limit some of the smart features?

Which are the best brands for GPU's of this generation or last one, and which ones should i avoid?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 08:13 PM PDT

I only used EVGA every time, but i wonder if some other brands are better in this moment or there is some that i should not look into, can be performance, arquitecture, temps, whine coil, customer service, etc. Looking for a xt6800xt or rtx3080.

Is a Microcenter Warranty on Parts Worthwhile?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 08:02 PM PDT

I was going to buy a few parts from Microcenter soon (new GPU, RAM and possibly PSU) In the past I've gotten the Microcenter Warranties but I've rarely used them. In your experience are they usually worthwhile?

LED on motherboard flickering even when PSU is off

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 12:39 AM PDT

Edit: I decided to take out my boot drive and interestingly the PC booted into BIOS. Put the nvme SSD back in, and secured it with another, bit longer screw. Everything works fine now.

So if anyone has a similar issue, maybe check your boot drive.

Still wondering about the flickering though.

    Hi guys, quick question.

When working on my PC yesterday evening it just turned off without warning a few minutes after I finished a Blender render. Since it was late I decided to go to bed.

Today I turned the PC on in the morning, if booted, but as soon I tried to log into Windows it shut down again. Ever since the "Boot" LED on the Mobo is lighting up when trying to boot, with no post or anything. Fans spin though, on the GPU too.

No I've disconnected the power cable from the PSU and noticed that my Power and Reset LED on the Mainboard are flickering.

    Is my Mainboard defect?

    Steps I took before:

    • Checked if cables are connected properly
    • took out GPU and put it back in
    • cleared CMOS
    • turned of PSU, held power button for 30sec
    • disconnected every drive except the Boot drive

    My system:

Ryzen 9 3950x, nzxt N7 B550 board (P1.50 bios), Gigabyte 3080Ti Vision OC, 64GB DDR 2666 Corsair Vengeance, Fractal Celsius S36 AIO, several Fractal Fans and Fractal Case, Samsung EVO 970 1TB nvme SSD, Intel 1TB nvme SSD, SanDisk 2TB SATA SSD, Seagate Barracuda 4TB HDD

I have narrowed down between two choices for my first gaming PC. Please give me advice on which one sounds like a better route.

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 10:25 PM PDT

The first one is a: Asus Rog Gaming Desktop Intel Core i7 11700F, 16 GB Memory GeForce RTX 3060 1 TB HDD + 512GB SSD

    Price: $1399.99 USD (Best Buy)

    The second one is a:

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR Gaming PC, Intel Core i5-11600KF 3.9GHz, 16GB DDR4, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, 500GB NVMe SSD, 1TB HDD, WiFi Ready & Win 11 Home

    Price: $1199 USD (Amazon)

I'm honestly torn and I have read up on the two.

    Help me choosing GPU

    Posted: 18 Mar 2022 12:08 AM PDT

    Hi,

I would like to know your opinion. What GPU would you buy with following requirements?

    • Ryzen 5 5600X

    • Supports 1440p +60hz (for one-player games) and 1080p up to 144hz (for competitive games, monitor supports)

    • Freesync? (Monitor supports it)

    • No streaming, no editing

    • No need of RT support

    • Cost-effective. Do not overspend. Say that I would not pay >1000€ for a GPU that overmeet the requirements, supporting more than I need, and I would not pay <400€ for a GPU that do not meet the requirements.

    Thanks!

Is it safe to mix different brand for ram

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 11:02 PM PDT

I was wondering can I mix t force rams with kingston hyperx fury because I can't find the same t force delta ram I use. It's still DDR 4 2400mhz just like my old rams btw.

Edit: t force rams are run on dual channel and my motherboard have 4 slots

About to pull the trigger. I have GPU, need to know if the rest of build is compatible! Help!

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 10:51 PM PDT

    Hello,

I basically already have a GPU (EVGA RTX3080TI FTW3) I've been asking around for the rest of my build but my knowledge is very limited. I am looking to get the most out of my GPU for a 1500$ budget (I know this build has a higher cost)

This is my final build : https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/mK4Ftn

Is everything compatible? Should I switch up some pieces for cheaper, but as efficient, pieces? I was also told to add some fans, I'd like to know how many more is necessary and which one, if possible.

    Thanks a lot!!!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Original problem: gifted Alienware Aurora R10 had massive overheating issues, and I was running in severe powersaving mode. Decided swapping the CPU, NVME, and RTX 2080 Super to a new mobo and case would allow better performance.

In doing so, the computer booted just fine for a few days, then decreasing functionality to the point that right-clicking the wallpaper or right-clicking a usb drive in file explorer would hang until restart.

Of note, Battle-Net was the first casualty and would not even load, nor could it even be installed after deletion. Installed would hang on an empty bar then cease. Also noted was that Windows saw the 3600 speed RAM as 2666, and selecting DOCP profile 1 in BIOS seemed to vastly decrease performance. Lastly, restarting the system took 5-10 minutes, with no updates requested, just always took a long time.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I worried that the issue was the BIOS, so I downloaded the latest and used the on board tool to flash it. This fixed nothing, and trying to even startup took minutes before any of the "on startup" programs would load, 10-15 minutes.

I attempted to use the Media Creation Tool to update/repair the current Windows install, but no luck. After 1.5 hours it reported complete but this did not fix anything.

So I tried to create a bootable USB using the Media Creation Tool, which took 2.5 hours and then reported failure to even create the bootable USB. Roommate's laptop did it in 20 minutes, which felt great.

Went into BIOS and selected to boot from USB, reinstalled windows without concern. Started up and used ninite for the basic slew of programs/clients/etc. Redownloaded Battle-net and Steam. Battlenet ran Wow Classic just fine, re-added interface and addons folder.

Since Windows was starting fresh, I noted it had updates needing a restart, which then hung for 5-10 minutes as before. After restart Discord and Battlenet won't activate on startup, and Battlenet will not load the launcher at all anymore. Right now I am just waiting for more updates and more restarts, but since they now hang indefinitely instead of restarting, I just put the pillow over the computer's face and hard reset via switch.

Has anyone seen anything like this after swapping components? This was a first for me, and seemed to work fine for a few days and now I may as well have a half-brick.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    No relevant photos.

    8+1 vs 8+1+1 Phase

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 10:49 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm a bit confused on the terminology surrounding VRMs. I understand 8+1 means 8 dedicated to CPU and 1 dedicated to other components, but I don't understand what the following +1 in 8+1+1 signifies.

First world problem: 3070 vs 6800XT with a G-Sync Monitor

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 10:18 PM PDT

I was fortunate enough to snag a RTX 3070 awhile ago. But now I have a crazy friend who had a 6800 XT and upgraded to 3090 and is willing to sell me his 6800 XT for whatever I can sell my 3070 for. Also my monitor is a 1440p G-Sync monitor.

Is it worth losing the G-sync and other nvidia exclusive features for the 6800 XT? I havent really delved into AMD GPU territory in a very long time either.

    Rest of my specs:

    • AMD 5600X
    • 32GB 3600Mhz DDR4 memory
    • 1TB NVME drive
    • B550 motherboard

Edit: My monitor is an Acer Predator XB271HU. Google results show that its not compatible with freesync. I think its because its 4 years old now and was back when free sync/g-sync were newer. Edit 2: I do have possession of the GPU to test.

    Custom prebuild Vs. New build?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 09:59 PM PDT

New to PC builds in general and just recently acquired a 3080 TI vision and was curious if now that I've gotten the what seems to be hardest part to find on market right now should I. A: Purchase all the parts (with consulting my friends who build pcs) that fit and build a pc OR B: Buy a prebuilt pc with good specs and a 3080 which I would then replace with my TI and would sell the 3080 to a friend at just below MSRP
