Is the RTX 3050 in a < 1000€ Laptop a good deal? Posted: 30 Mar 2022 04:01 AM PDT Hi folks, I am in the market for new hardware and as I want to shrink my Laptop + PC setup to one machine I am considering buying a Laptop with good enough GPU for gaming + video editing. I came across an offer for an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with: - AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS CPU 3.2-4.4 GHz - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Notebook GPU 4GB VRAM - 16GB DDR4 RAM - A 2560x1440 IPS Panel - And 512 GB SSD for 999€. Would you consider this to be a good deal? I am a bit worried about the 4GB VRAM to be a bottle neck when it comes to gaming. But its only 999€ so it doesn't seem to be that bad a deal. I don't usually play AAA titles but that may be due to me not having up to date gaming equipment in the first place. I also thought about getting a M1 Macbook for everyday stuff + video editing and waiting a bit to get a PS5 for my gaming needs. I still do have my old gaming PC, so waiting a little longer wouldn't hurt me that much I think. (Macbook + PS5 would be ~1700€ in the long term though compared to the 999€ for the Asus...) What do you guys think? [link] [comments] |
New setup... going insane between all the possibilities Posted: 30 Mar 2022 08:02 AM PDT Hi all so a bit of background. I am going through an update of my current setup of devices. Reason is, I am starting a phd soon but have been working for a couple of years in a bank after university, so my needs changed drastically. I'll try to sum up my situation quickly to give you guys an idea. My needs:
What I am thinking of:
My ex-setup:
Given I am selling my current devices and this is a setup I would like to keep for 4+ years, I am willing to invest some money here, still trying to remain in the 2.5k/3k range possibly. If anybody has an idea or experience with needs similar to mine I would love to hear your opinion, I am sure there are other possibilities I didn't consider at all. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Mar 2022 07:50 AM PDT Hello! It's time to upgrade my partner's laptop. I got her a used Latitude Z600 a few years back, and she loved it! The specs on that were: 1.60GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, Webcam Wifi Win 10 Her requirements for it was to be a big screen and lightweight. I guess the 4.5 lbs on this 16 inch laptop was light enough. She's been complaining for the past year of the performance while browsing, so much that she is preferring her tablet to the laptop. (I noticed.) All she really does is open lots of tabs to browse and office. I wanted to install linux, but she doesn't want to learn the OS. So I would like to surprise her with a new-for-her used laptop. Suggestions? Was looking at the possibility of an Lat E55X0 . I would love to get something for her that I can upgrade over time, if needed, and/or, if budget dictates. Therefore partial to Lenovos, Dells business-class, even old Apples in theory. But whatever your suggestions are, are welcome. (I have this perception that HP business class is not as durable and issue-free as Lenovos and Dells, but maybe that's just my bias.) roughly $500 windows machine for older parent. Accounting/browsing/Plex/Netflix client? Posted: 30 Mar 2022 09:56 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US Would like to keep it under $500 USD, buying in CONUS. Best Buy within a couple miles drive, if I could get hands on the device before purchase that'd make things easier for me. Are you open to refurbs/used? I'm getting pretty tired of providing tech support for device failure, so I'd rather avoid refurb/used How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? This woman has gone through four used Surface Pros in the past six years and needs something that isn't going to fail on her. 2-in-1 format would be preferable. I think she can get away with 4gb RAM/64gb storage. it's plugged in 90% of the time so battery life isn't a concern. How important is weight and thinness to you? Decently important, current device is a SP4 which kinda sets expectations Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 10-15" 1080p touchscreen Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/editing/gaming. Quickbooks/Excel, plex/netflix, chrome/brave, word processing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A, no games will be played on here. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Prioritizing touchscreen, build quality, and durability/reliability/device longevity. No need for fingerprint reader/optical drive. Keyboard can be detachable or attached Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm leaning towards just picking up a Surface Go, but wanted to get some opinions from the community :) thanks y'all [link] [comments] |
Trying to Pick a Gaming Laptop Posted: 30 Mar 2022 09:23 AM PDT I'm comparing these two devices, my budget is $1300 I plan to use the device for gaming and media consumption and will be taking it around with me as I travel for work. Mainly trying to play games like Lost Ark, Elden Ring, Apex, and Minecraft so not the most graphically intensive. At home I have a laptop cooling pad but don't plan to take it with me when traveling. I'm trying to understand the difference between these two and what I'd be losing if I go with the cheaper MSI [link] [comments] |
No Nonsense Senior Proof US <$1,000 Posted: 30 Mar 2022 09:01 AM PDT A no nonsense "shelf stable" laptop for light office use over the next 10 years. Looking to replace an old Dell laptop in my place of work. All of my coworkers are non tech savvy seniors and because of where I work it will always be seniors who use this laptop. So I would like a laptop that has all the obvious things ( multiple USB ports, Ethernet port, htmi port, sd slots, and an optical drive for CDs, movies, and other programs on disc) that also has an easy normal keyboard, and not very many extra or unusual things. The laptop will mostly be in a drawer and not used very much but will have to fulfill all laptop needs at work. We mostly use it for light internet use(searches, YouTube, etc), excel, PowerPoint presentations, zoom meetings, and note taking. Total budget. Around $1,000 usd. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, only new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Sturdy laptop with all ports and slots. Easy to use and understand keyboard design. Mostly will be left in drawer and taken out for occasional use but needs to be a one stop shop for all laptop needs. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important, will only be used in the work place. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Excel, PowerPoint, internet, zoom meeting. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Easy keyboard, optical drive, all ports and slots (multiple USB, htmi, sd card, etc) Easy to use and maintain laptop for senior centered workplace. [link] [comments] |

broke ph student in need of a cheap laptop worth 40k PHP for CAD Posted: 30 Mar 2022 08:13 AM PDT Can someone recommend me the best laptop woth 40k php?. I'm not that tech-savvy so some recommendations would help me choose the best laptop for the given price. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: I can spend at most 40,000 Philippines Pesos, and would like to purchase in the Philippines. Are you open to refurbs/used? Need a laptop for graphic design work and gaming Posted: 30 Mar 2022 06:24 AM PDT Hey guys! I'm looking for a new laptop to buy that would be best suited for intense graphic design work and preferably also for gaming - so in other words, need a system that would be not only capable of handling intense work loads, but also would have a high quality screen - the budget would be 1000-1500€ :) the size of the laptop and weight doesn't matter much to me, but if possible would prefer it to have a larger screen. Currently have an old Asus FX503 laptop, sadly was a bit dissapointed back when i bought it as a student, the screen quality turned out to be not that good (has a weird yellow tint) not to mention the cooling issues 😅 so for sure would like to avoid such issues this time! Also, dont know if it's important to mention, but I'm from EU, Lithuania to be more precise. Thank you in advance for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Looking for good 2 in 1 laptop for 1000 € Posted: 30 Mar 2022 06:00 AM PDT I have a friend who is looking for a good 2 in 1 windows laptop to mostly use for drawing. Won't be used for any gaming of 3D rendering. Budget is max 1000 € . Preferably on the lighter side but not too much of a concern, also looking for around a 13 inch display. [link] [comments] |
Video Editing Laptop Suggestion Wanted Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:51 AM PDT I teach virtual courses, including fully asynchronous courses. Both of my current computers are a bit long in the tooth. On my primary video editor, an HP Envy x360, when I need to edit a video, it can take at least as long as the video's length for the computer to save the file. That isn't bad on a 5 minute video, but there are times when I am editing 30+ minute videos, and I can't really stop working for half a hour while the computer churns away. I also used to travel a fair amount pre-pandemic, and I see that starting to pick up again. So, I'd like something lightweight. I currently have a Microsoft Surface 2 as my "travel laptop", and love it. But I know not to do my video editing on it unless I HAVE to. Of course, the nature of my work is now changing and I will likely need to do a fair bit of editing on the road. So, I'm looking at new laptops. I'd like to spend the least that I can, but I'm willing to spend up to about $2,000. And if I'm going to make that kind of investment, I'd really like something that won't go out of date in 2 months. I'm leaning toward either an i7-12700H CPU or an AMD 6900-series. 32GB of RAM, and at least 1TB of storage. Am I way off base? My last "requirement" is that it really should be made by a US, Taiwan, Korea, or Japan-based manufacturer. So, no Lenovo or MSI. ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, LG, Microsoft, etc. are OK. I've seen the ASUS ROG, and that looks tempting. But a bit heavy, especially compared to my Surface. Finding other travel-friendly computers with one of the new CPUs is difficult. Am I just being impatient and need to wait a few more weeks before we see some of the major brands running laptops with the new CPUs? Or am I just missing them when I'm searching? [link] [comments] |
France - 1000-1800 EUR work laptop (and light gaming) Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:44 AM PDT
1000-1500 EUR, France. Can stretch it if really needed, so 1800 EUR would be the absolute max.
No.
In this order: build quality, form factor, performance/battery life. The last two are equally important, I don't mean to say that I don't care about battery life. I just don't think that I need a really powerful beast, that's why performance is "last". Also, if you think the perfect laptop for me is a bit chonky, feel free to ignore my preferred form factor, and recommend it anyway!
If possible, I would prefer to avoid really bulky machines. I'm currently using a rose gold 13" MacBook Air, but I understand that machines with a larger screen (see below) may not be as thin etc.
15-16"
No CAD/video/photo editing. Maybe some gaming, but nothing that requires powerful components, at least I don't think so. I'm going to use basic programs (Office 365, Discord, a PDF editor, Skype), but also some professional ones (computer-assisted translation tools). Here are the recommended system settings of two of my work programs:
I'm guessing that's nothing too demanding? Please note, however, that I normally need to have quite a few (10ish) Firefox tabs open at the same time. So then I have Firefox, one of my work programs (usually not both at once), and Discord running at the same time.
Stardew Valley, indie games, older games (I'm a big fan of the Bioshock franchise, and I start new playthroughs now and then), Final Fantasy pixel remaster. As for FPS, as long as games are not extremely laggy, I'm fine.
Good keyboard is A MUST. I've heard that the Lenovo ThinkPad keyboards were good, would any of you agree? I would also prefer a numeric keypad, but I can do without. The screen should also be great quality; I'm going to be reading texts all day, so it would be great if the screen had some built-in low blue light technology.
Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Looking at a MacBook to start learning Programming Posted: 30 Mar 2022 01:02 AM PDT Hiya. So, as the title says, I'm looking to get a MacBook for classes in the fall and for different projects and so on. I have decided on MacBook because I have done some research around various subreddits and websites saying they are typically best used for this due to the UNIX based environment. If this is wrong in anyway, please tell me and give me a reason as to why. Anyways, I was wondering if someone could help me find a good budget MacBook for this. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you. :) [link] [comments] |
Can't decide between HP Envy 14 and Asus Vivobook Pro 14 OLED. Posted: 29 Mar 2022 08:56 PM PDT I'm looking for a thin and light laptop, preferably 14", with respectable performance and good battery life. It's mainly for college work and a bit of light gaming. These are the two options I've narrowed it down to, but can't choose one. The 90hz OLED on the Vivobook is nice, while the Envy is more premium and compact. Also, is Intel or AMD better if battery is my primary concern? Help me choose, please! (If there are other good options I've missed, lemme know too) [link] [comments] |
Portable, basic home use laptop Posted: 29 Mar 2022 07:08 PM PDT I have a super whiz bang desktop for gaming and so on, but I'd also like to have a laptop to take with when we travel or I have stuff to do, but I don't want to be stuck at the computer. I won't be gaming with this machine. Probably some web browsing, streaming, MS Office and some programming tasks, mostly in Python, maybe VM's. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $800 max, preferably in the $600 range Are you open to refurbs/used? sure as long as there's some assurance of reliability How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build quality. 2 in 1 would be nice, but not a deal breaker How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately. My current laptop is a Dell M4800, i7 2.8GHz and 32GB RAM...it weighs about 7 pounds. that's way too much, but I also don't need the latest, lightest laptop made of pure unobtanium Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15" 13" is too small, 17" too big Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like to have a laptop that can connect to a docking station and the two monitors I have for my desktop though it will mostly be used independently Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is a Dell M4800, i7 2.8GHz and 32GB RAM running Win 10 Pro. It runs fine, but I'm concerned that it's getting a bit long in the tooth, plus it weighs in at 7lb, which was a lot when I bought it and seems even heavier now. It will also cook your lap if you actually try to use it on your lap. Its wireless card just died and it won't run Win11. I'm not sure if that's a big deal or not. I can replace the wireless card for about $20. Would I be better off keeping it and just getting a $600-$800 tablet? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Will this Laptop be able to run CAD softwares ? Posted: 29 Mar 2022 06:50 PM PDT Hey everyone, new engineering student here ! I saw that Laptop and that's basically what my budget can afford, but I don't want to pull the trigger and regret it later for not running the softwares I want.
