    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:39 AM PDT

My dad and I need new laptops, we need them for work and lite gaming. We need a kind of lite workstation. Here are my suggested specs and please tell me what you think. We also have a budget from $1000 to $1200 per laptop. No mac books.

    CPU - Any 6 core, 6+ thread. 9th gen+. Ryzen 5 would work perfectly.

GPU - Preferably something not integrated. GTX 1650 would work perfectly.

    RAM - 16GB

Storage - 256-512 GB SSD or m.2 drive

    A decent back lit keyboard

    Connectors -

    1-2 Thunderbolt ports

    preferably a Headphone/speaker combo jack

we plan to use a docking station so HDMI and USB A not required

    Display

    15.6/17.3 inch 300+nits Anti-glare

    Other display specs don't matter

Touch-pad Speakers, Cameras, Microphones, don't matter

Battery life, Charging speed, Weight, Touchscreen, Bluetooth, Color or Security doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter if its loud under load

    Best find so far is

    Notebook Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3

We have a promo and in my country its $1050

Probably gonna buy it but I just want to know what do yall think.

Laptop for IT (Networking) study and possible work in IT in the future

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 02:52 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Buying in Australia, $2500 AUD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?I'd rather buy new and get a good warranty, however if there's a cracking deal on refurb then yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?performance and ports > battery life > build quality >
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?would like something light but not too bothered
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.14 or around there
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.No gaming really, no serious editing, will just be running software and programs that are used on my computer networking 2 year course and then in the future whatever i need to run for Sys admin work
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?n/a
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?front-facing camera, good choice of ports would be nice - if i do start working in IT then they would come in handy. some USB, USB C, HDMI, SD card reader would be nice
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I've been looking primarily at lenovo thinkpads and have never used a macbook before. I was looking at the Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 2, with the options that i selected (AMD Ryzen 7 pro, 16GB soldered, 400 nit low power, 512gb ssd) it comes to around the same price as the Lenovo Thinkpad T480 with similar specs.

    • I was even considering spending a bit more and getting the X1 carbon, but I'm not sure if I'll need the extra performance now or in the future. The extra ports on the T series might be handier. Open to other brands and models also, just so many to choose from, i can't even pick which Lenovo model i would get!

Is the HP Elitebook G3 a good laptop?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 03:06 AM PDT

Hi I found a refurbished HP Elitebook with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me if it's a good deal.

I'm a trainee teacher/ college student who will be using it for Zoom calls, emails, Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Excel etc., for completing assignments and for general browsing. I'm not interested in gaming or never really stream movies or watch Netflix on laptops.

The laptop is cheaper since it's refurbished and also comes witha 12 month warranty. The deal can be found here: https://www.refurbed.ie/p/hp-elitebook-840-g3-14-i5-6300u/11536/?co=ie&utm_cluster=gradeA&utm_content=hp-elitebook-840-g3-14-i5-6300u-11536&utm_group=hp-elitebook-840-g3-14-i5-6300u&co=ie&utm_campaign=smart&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_content=&cq_plac=&cq_net=u&cq_pos=&cq_med=&cq_plt=gp&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImL3A4YLg8gIVge7tCh1kTw2fEAQYASABEgJgUfD_BwE

The sites might be on spanish because i live in Mexico, so you may need to use the translator of Chrome to read the text. You could also recomend me another laptop if you got any in mind. Rugged Field Laptop That Also Has Good Display In Sunlight

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:31 AM PDT

In my line of work there is quite a few times where I have to work outside such as out in an actual field or on top of a roof with a laptop. Laptops I currently have don't have the best display in bright sunlight. Something rugged and with all the typical connections of a standard laptop - not something that requires adapters for different kinds of connections.

    Thanks!

Laptop for college student from the Philippines.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 04:26 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US

    • 40,000 Php or 800 USD, Philippines

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No, but would still like to hear your opinions if there are good laptops from years ago

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • I really don't know what these are. I don't like the cheap bendy plastic feel. I'd like a laptop with good battery too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not that important since I never brought my laptop anywhere, but I prefer thinner ones, and for weight, it can be whatever.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Bigger screens since I watch a lot of movies

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • No Cad, only light to moderate video editing but not that extensive. For photo, I do simple digital artworks if that helps

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • LoL and I only know that from before, I used to play at 50fps, i think, but it's better if higher, but if my price range can't, it's okay, gaming is not a priority.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Business student, Finance and Management Accounting so I compute a lot.
    • Digital Artist but I only make simple ones that doesn't require too much processing
    • I watch a lot of movies so bigger screens would be good

Laptop for everyday use USA, $1000

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:46 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Buying in USA, $1000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Potntially - I am inclined to say no, but mostly because I dont know how to judge if a refurbished product is good.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance > battery life > build quality > 2-in-1 is preferred
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
not hugely important, i won't be moving around with it too much but I also want to be able to take it to a coffee shop if I need to
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I currently have a 15" and I think it's a bit too big. anywhere 12-14 I would be open to
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I might do light gaming (like Stardew Valley or running FantasyGrounds)- but usually no more than 4 hours/week. I have thought about doing CAD before but it is not my priority.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Stardew valley or fantasy grounds. I had to google what FPS was, so I dont think I care too much based on these games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
front-facing camera, some USB ports, and an HDMI port for multi-screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have had my current laptop for seven years and it is really slow and (physically) falling apart. I think its time for me to buy a new one. I dont frequently use my laptop, but I do hop on it to play DnD or Stardew Valley every once in a while. In the future I may go back to school, but in my experience most of school will be writing papers on MS Word.

I have a work laptop already, so I'm really after something that's going to be able to handle personal stuff like streaming/movies, using a VPN, casual gaming like the ones mentioned above, and occasional high use programs like Photoshop/GIMP. It doesn't need to be super high powered, but something that's going to be able to keep up with the above and over the years.

Laptop with Detatchable screen AND bluetooth keyboard

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:11 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm looking for laptops that have a detatchable screen, but were the keyboard still works when it's detatched. An added bonus would be if there exists a lightweight stand for the screen as well!

Bonus question: With all the new folding phones everywhere, has anyone made a folding external screen yet? One that when folded is maybe the size of a laptop, but insead of unfolding to a normal one just has one big seamless screen

Both of these questions are maybe obviously from someone doing remote work trying to find the best setup. If you have other suggestions that you think could serve the same purpose feel free to suggest them!

    Thanks in advance!

Business laptop with great linux support (no thinkpad)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I know tpads support linux perfectly but unfortunaly tpads prices are overinflated since 2 years (thanks to fanboys who created an Apple like cult). So i prefer to not overpay a premium just to be part of the elite tpad circle.

Is there any other business laptop series that has great linux support?

Business laptop series examples: acer travelmate, dell latitude, dell vostro, hp probook, hp elitebook, lenovo thinkbook, asus prosomething, fujitsu lifebook.

Ps: i know dell precision line has native ubuntu support but those are desktop repalcements and bit too bulky for me. Pps: i'm not looking at brands like system76 because i need something with amazing build quality and what i need i can only find in a business laptop.

Looking for a Premium Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:14 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:- Singapore. Price is not an issue
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?- No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?- Durability & build quality is the most important. I want something built like a tank and built to last. Mechanical Keyboard is a plus. Aesthetics are important. Fancy lighting is a plus. Performance is important, but probably just gonna stick to the listed games plus whatever's hot at the moment. Battery life is not important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?- Not important, as long as it can be carried in a big backpack
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.- Bigger rather than smaller
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.- Might link up to a Wacom or drawing tablet for casual drawing. Might want to mine some crypto (not bitcoin), maybe monero litecoin or bitcoin cash or digibyte if that's even possible. Run a Theta Guardian & Edge Node 24/7 if possible.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?-Games want to play max or near max settings: Dota 2, Dragon Quest XI, and XII when it comes out. Devil May Cry 5. Minecraft. Latest Batman game. Overwatch / Overwatch 2. Whatever the most realistic racing / driving simulator is. Maybe Forza
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?- Durable, long lasting and best build quality required. Heat vent not at the left side because I'm left handed. If there is HDMI input so I can play Nintendo Switch on the laptop screen, that would be cool
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**I haven't looked around a lot, but I have an alienware 15 r2 and was pretty happy with it, and was looking at the alienware x17, or whatever the best alienware model was, but I heard since Dell took over they messed up the quality. I like the stylish design of the x17. And eye catching and stylish feature like those fancy lights in the rear of the x17 would be nice to have. But maybe there's something more powerful and better. Thank you.

    Budget laptops under $400?

Mid range laptop for in browser applications

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 04:06 PM PDT

My wife uses a laptop for charting in browser. Needs something with a number pad (likely 15" range) and transports it back and forth to work, room to room at work, etc. Doesn't need touchscreen or tablet folding. Battery life and low weight would be high priority. She's currently using a couple year old Lenovo Thinkpad that's just slowing down. I've used school grade Chromebooks before but I'm worried about her needing more robust Microsoft office/PDF capabilities and it's been a few years since I used ChromeOS for anything. Budget ideally less than $800 or so. Appreciate any suggestions.

Sidenote is shopineer still a good research start? Haven't used it in a bit but have bought a few laptops with their recommendations.

    Thanks!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.Not as small as a tablet, but not bigger than like 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Going to be doing digital artwork. Using adobe, corel painter and affinty photo. Also going to be using the internet a lot, and doing on the go work with Microsoft office etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Touch screen, something that'll last 5 years minimum
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I've been looking at a few laptops. I'm just not sure which would be best suited for me, I've checked out the Lenovo Yoga series, and the HP ENVY but I know there are a bunch out there and wanted to know which you guys think would be best! TIA

Best new/refurbished (gaming) laptop for under 500?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:53 PM PDT

Hey guys, looking to surprise my cousin with a new laptop to do some light gaming like League of Legends on for preferably under 500. Finding some good things like https://www.newegg.com/black-silver-hp-elitebook-840-g2-mainstream/p/1TS-000D-03DG2?Item=9SIADT28T70499 which is roughly the specs and price range I would expect. Any other suggestions to things to look for when I browse various sites to get the best deal and not get ripped off? Thanks!
