Around $1000 sweetspot - General use, LoL, some rocket league and csgo Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:03 PM PDT Hello, I am looking for a general use laptop. I value at least 75hz and around 15 inch screen size. I do some competitive gaming from time to time, but I don't really play recent games that demand too much power so I'm not sure if I need a dedicated card considering how APU's are pretty good nowadays. I value build quality, picture quality and response. I don't mind low battery capacity. submitted by /u/chrisZk [link] [comments] |

£1200 laptop to be used for computer science course at university, some gaming and potentially work in the future. Posted: 30 Aug 2021 04:02 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£1200, could probably go higher if needs be but ideally want to spend as little as possible - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Ideally no but again, open to the possibility if its a good laptop for the right price. - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance takes priority as I intend to run multiple desktops and Operating systems simultaneously, Battery is also important so i can study on the go. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not too fussed about weight and thinness though it could be a deciding factor between similar laptops as less bulky is preferable. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Not a particular screen size no but would like to have over 11.6 inch - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will be but am unsure as to what programs I will be using just yet - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I intend to play Minecraft, Rocket league and I'll probably mess around with a few fps games. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Nope - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Is this the best choice of laptop - UK Computer Science degree + light gaming, budget ~£1000? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:48 AM PDT https://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/3xs-performance-gl1650 I'm looking at this laptop customised to have 16gb RAM and 1TB WD Blue SSD ^ I'll be using it for a Computer Science degree*, and I would also like to be able to do some light gaming from time to time. Something like CSGO (120fps) or at most Sekiro (~60fps) on whichever settings it can handle. My priority for alternatives would be 16gb RAM, and I would prefer if it didn't lean too far into the "gaming" aesthetic with too many LEDs etc. I have a desktop at home so future-proofing is not a big issue for me, as long as it's suitable for the next 4 years or so. Is the laptop linked the best option? Thanks. *https://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/g600/ submitted by /u/__Jacob [link] [comments] |
A Laptop with good eGPU connector? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:47 AM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:3000€, could be more or less, depends on the performance of the laptop. Should be good value.
- Are you open to refurbs/used?Refurbs yes; Used no
- How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?2-in-1 with a good CPU and possibly a dGPU. Battery life should be acceptable for daily college (4+ hours very light work).
- How important is weight and thinness to you?Weight should be as low as possible, but is second to everything else.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" , but open to other sizes
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD (SolidWorks mostly), Gaming (Newer RPGs like RDR2, Cyberpunk, Metro, …. Other games too but they are less performance intensive. Compilation and compute intensive programs too (Large neural net training, flow simulations etc.) See below for more info about performance.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
- No specific games, performance should be as high as possible (see later)
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen with pen input, RJ-45, and the most important part a good connector for eGPU (OCuLink, 2nd internal M.2 preferably PCIe 4.0, etc. Not Thunderbolt since the performance loss is too high) I'm not opposed to some modding of the chassis. Looked at the Asus Flow x13 initially but the proprietary connector with only a mobile 3080 was a letdown. (If it someday gets reverse engineered or released as open standard it would be the perfect laptop)
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to to the discussion.
- The chances that it even exists are slim, so if nothing exists I'll just bide my time, use my stationary PC and hope :) I would connect a 3090 (needed for VRAM)

Best laptop for Adobe Suite, photo editing, graphic design etc Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:34 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. NZD$2500 Aotearoa New Zealand Are you open to refurbs/used? No, would prefer to buy new with warranty How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - Performance
- Build quality
- Battery life
How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively important, I plan on taking it with me quite frequently. But screen resolution and performance take precedence. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The larger the better. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming. Just photo editing, design etc. I'm also a sub-editor so will probably need to run MS Word or an equivalent program sometimes. But plan on using this laptop predominantly for photography projects. Programs: - Adobe InDesign - Adobe Photoshop - Adobe LightRoom - Google Chrome - I'm probably forgetting some. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, reliable, large amount of storage, high screen resolution, various ports would be good as I'd like to use it with my projector too. Looking for a laptop suitable for drawing and gaming Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:20 AM PDT My current laptop is an Acer Aspire 3 (here are the specs): https://gadgets.ndtv.com/acer-aspire-3-a315-51-3004-5124 Recently, I broke my laptop while trying to open it. Its right hinge snapped, and the frame is pulling away from the screen. It still functions well! But I can't/fear closing will break it further. I always said to friends, "Let me crack my laptop open," but I never thought I'd quite literally do it. What do I use my laptop for? In terms of programs, I use Medibang Paint Pro to draw, though I may change to clip studio paint. I mainly play Minecraft or Ultrakill on my laptop; both run relatively well on my current laptop. Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't worry my PC couldn't handle games due to previous laptops I've had. What I'm looking for? I'm looking for a laptop that's £500-£1000 in price. It possibly has 8GB RAM and a powerful screen (the colour on my current is very dull, which had affected my art). I prefer a laptop that runs Windows as well. TLDR; Laptop broke. I use it to draw and game. Looking for: - £500-£1000 price - 8GB -'Powerful' Screen -Suitable for Drawing and Gaming Hopefully, this post is okay! Any suggestions are appreciated :) submitted by /u/inactive-truth [link] [comments] |

£1,000, UK, laptop for work Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:50 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
About £1,000, I can go a bit higher if it's for something really great. Purchasing from the UK - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Only if it comes with a decent warranty option (2+ years) - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't know enough to comment re: form factor. I'm looking for something with great performance, good battery life, good durability, good build quality. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
A bit important - thinness more important than weight but it's not a dealbreaker. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14" or thereabouts. I have a big monitor I use when I'm working from home but I do like a decent sized screen for when I'm on the go. - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not likely. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch-screen is useful but not a dealbreaker as I tend to use keyboard/mouse a lot. I hook up a USB keyboard and mouse and sometimes charge my phone so a minimum of 2 USB ports (but I'm thinking of moving on to a soft bluetooth keyboard at some point). Need HDMI port for monitor.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have had a Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 2013 for the last 8 years and it still works pretty well but I need a new laptop as I'm going freelance and I can't run the risk of this one failing on me. (Plus I chipped a corner of my current laptop and I'd like to appear more professional.) I need to run Office and often have multiple applications open. It's rare for me to have to run heavier programmes but I may be looking to do some heavy work with data in the medium term. My preference, purely for aesthetics, is for something not too chunky. I do sometimes do audio/music editing using Audacity/Cubase but I'm thinking of devoting my current laptop to this and therefore the new laptop would just be for work. However, as and when this current laptop becomes obsolete (how much longer can it last?!), I'd likely want to move the audio/music fun to new laptop. Thanks for all your suggestions! submitted by /u/thatswhatshesaw [link] [comments] |

Not sure which to select, ThinkPad P14s gen 2 (ryzen 5850u) or Asus zenbook 13 (ryzen 5800u) Posted: 29 Aug 2021 10:23 PM PDT I'm mainly looking for a portable laptop with good battery life (coming from a gaming laptop) and have heard a lot about ThinkPad and how great it is. My main dilemma is that, if I go with Thinkpad, i have to more than 12 weeks (cause availability) and it has up-gradable ram plus 5850u, on the other hand zenbook is immediately available, no headphone jack, has soldered ram and 5800u but has great battery life, 1Tb nvme ssd (compared to the 256 gb on thinkpad) and oled display plus its slightly cheaper than p14s too. What do you guys think I should go for? or is there any other laptop I'll be missing out on. submitted by /u/hopefullythisworksd [link] [comments] |
Gaming Laptop Suggestions/Advice Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:07 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
max $3.5-4k (US) - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
The most important thing for me is performance and build quality. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that important; would prefer a laptop that is durable and would last me a good while. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17 in - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Planning to use mainly for gaming, possibly video editing on the side. I plan to play a multitude of games (e.g. Dead by Daylight, Civ VI, MMOs like FFXIV, Sims 4, AC Odyssey, RDE 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, etc.) - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I would like to play the games listed above with smooth fps at almost max settings. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality would be the most important, as well as having a good, tactile keyboard and a monitor with a good refresh rate. Also, a QHD (not 4K) screen with a good refresh rate as well as a nice cooling system that prevents the laptop from getting too loud/hot would be a plus. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm planning to use this laptop as a desktop replacement; I already have a smaller laptop for non-gaming needs. So, things like battery life/portability/etc. are not as important as performance and durability/longevity. I don't know much about the specifics of laptop technology and which company/brand is better when comparing laptops with similar specs, so I would appreciate the suggestions. Personally, I've been eyeing the 17" Alienware, ASUS, and Lenovo Legion laptops. submitted by /u/fireindigoo [link] [comments] |
Has anyone here have a good experience with the new Dell XPS 15/17? Posted: 29 Aug 2021 08:33 AM PDT Considering getting the new XPS 17 for someone as a gift, but the quality control issues are pulling away my interest. Typically the most vocal will be the ones who had a bad experience, but even YouTube reviewers are getting bad units. Should I bother getting this? Thoughts on the HP Pavilion Aero Ryzen 5 5600U for a programming student's laptop? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 01:31 AM PDT Tbh I don't see any flaws in it. Display is amazing, ports are sufficient, reviews put the battery life at at least 8-10 hours on everyday use which is incredible for 43 Watt hours and It's less than 1 kilogram in weight which is insane. From what I can tell the zen 3 Ryzen 5 is better than most processors in this price range and more than sufficient for basically everything I could need it for. Any downsides? submitted by /u/sparsh26 [link] [comments] |

Choice between 2 laptops Posted: 30 Aug 2021 12:44 AM PDT Greetings, I am really torn between 2 laptops (even three but last one wont be in stock for at least another month). Anyway, the two choices I have are legion 5 and legion 5 pro . Legion 5 cpu: R5 5600H gpu: RTX 3060 RAM: 16gb STR: 512gb SSD Display: 1080p Price: 1200 eur Legion 5 pro cpu: R5 5800H gpu: RTX 3060 RAM: 16gb STR: 1tb SSD Display: 1080p Price: 1500 eur I really wanted the 3070 version 5pro but it was (with 32gb ram) 1700 eur and was out of stock in two days. Anyway, between these two I kind of feel that the cheaper model is much better deal, however 512gb is really too little these days so I might as well add another 100eur to add another 1 TB. Also, I was hoping to get into streaming, and Im afraid if the 3060 will be powerful enough to do the job. ALso, I will use it for coding and kind of feel that the extra two cores will be helpful. Anyway, Im looking for different point of views and opinions on the options. PS: tried but cant put the options in a nice looking table. submitted by /u/morbihann [link] [comments] |

After 11 years my Asus laptop is on the fritz. I am half way through my part time MBA program so I can't have it die in the middle of the semester. Super basic needs, just googling, Microsoft word / excel use, Powerpoint and Zoom. Just checked my laptop and I've used 0.11 GB of RAM so don't need much of that I guess. Would like a bright screen to work outside but not a top priority. Laptop 3060-70 recommendations Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:53 PM PDT I wanted to buy a laptop, probably for 2022 I'm currently searching a laptop in spain, I would be interested in a 3070 laptop, but my budget will be around 1500€. I found an omen 15 3070 under that price, Ii don't know if it is worth it over a lower-priced 3060 with a high wattage, I'm interested in the legion 5 pro, but if I can't find it then, I'm searching for other options, the G15 3060 5800 seems interesting, but i also saw the msi katana's laptops and I also don't know if THAT is worth it, I much prefer a cheap laptop with good performance than a more expensive one with only a little more performance. If you have other recommendations, please leave a comment. submitted by /u/Fetrixx [link] [comments] |
