    GPU Vs Ram

    GPU Vs Ram

    GPU Vs Ram

    Posted:

Right now I'm stuck between buying the MSI Stealth 15M, which comes with RTX 3060, i7 and 16gb of ram. Or the MSI Modern with 32gb of ram, and a larger hard drive (which isn't very important to me). I play lots of games, but I also run semi intensive music software/recording software, and am wondering if the 16gb is enough for things like that compared to the 32gb, but at the same time the RTX 3060 is really appealing. I am also up for other suggestions.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Lightweight and thin is preferred
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

It's also not that urgent for me to buy a laptop. I already have one but it doesn't keep up with heavy programs anymore. I can wait for upcoming products too.

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q - 4GB or 4GB NVIDIA Quadro T2000 ?

    Posted:

    Hello,
I am about to buy a new laptop in order to go deeply into studiyng gamedev (UE4), I am also doing some video editing, working with some DAWs, I might want to learn some vfx tools in the future . I am thinking between Thinkpad P1 and Thinkpad X1 Extreme. The only big diffeence between them is that the first has NVIDIA Quadro and the second one - GeForce GTX. I know that Quadro is better for proffesional work but does is also apply to game making? Or is the difference is not that big?
    Thanks for any help!

      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Prioritize performance, thermals and noise
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight and thinness is not important to me
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I prefer 17" but would get a 15" if only way to get under budget
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming - FPS Shooters - mainly CAll of Duty Warzone, RTS - Total War, Age of Empires

Call of Duty Warzone - 120+ FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I do like a good keyboard. My Asus Zenbook currently have snapped at the hinges (yes both, not just one side) after no know damage only 1.5 years of use. Certainly did nothappen at once, over time, from simply opening and closing the laptop. Hoping to at least get two years out of my next one. I believe the laptops unique build, designed to lift the back for cooling and audio, had something to do with the hinges failing.

So far it seems like an RTX 3000 series with decent wattage is ideal for GPU, or a 2080 with 115W+ of juice. CPU - I've seen the Ryzen 5000 series touted as the best performance with battery life balance. Then also seen intel's 10th gen listed as the best. Monitor - 240 seems good enough. 144hz seems like not quite enough. 1080p. 16 gb ram. I am a bit out of my element here, only know the very basics, your help is greatly appreciated!

      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor (highly portable, but 2-in-1 not required), performance and build quality as joint first priority, then battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important, I'm seeking something very easily portable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13in, but would consider larger if the laptop still counts as thin and light
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Some gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
E.g. Horizon Zero Dawn, 4K resolution, 60fps (not sure if this is realistically achievable, any advice is very much appreciated); League of Legends, 4K, 140+ fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Currently have someone offering to give me a Chuwi Herbook Pro (Intel (R) Celeron (R) N4000C @ 1.1GHz, 8GB RAM) and I'm wondering whether this would do the trick. Seems like the CPU isn't great but IF it would be fine for Zoom meetings, casual browsing, listening to music, occasional streaming, running Google docs, forms, sheets, etc, i'm not really fussed. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Keep Dell G5 or get something else $600-$900 US 15"

    Posted:

Last week I picked up a Dell G5 Ryzen 7 4800H with 5600M and 144hz display on a "certified excellent" open box deal at Best Buy for just over $800 with tax. After a clean Windows install and recommended drivers from /r/dellg5se I'm running without any issues. I also replaced the 2x4GB sticks of ram with 2x8GB. I like the keyboard and touchpad, the display is great, and performance has exceeded my needs so far. I am a little concerned about the heat though as I am seeing the CPU hit and stay around 95 C (checked with HWInfo, CoreTemp, and NZXT Cam) during Rocket League and Cities Skylines (dGPU is 70-80). During Cinebench R23 the CPU hit 101 C. Researching laptop temps has produced mixed results of saying 95 C is too hot, or 95 C is fine as the chip maxes at 105 C and will throttle if it has to. I have not noticed any throttling.

I have another week before my return period is up and don't necessarily need a laptop immediately if I were to return it. I am happy with it so far, but this is a huge step up in performance for me and the longevity effects of heat are unfamiliar territory. If the heat is a legitimate concern I will look for something else.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600-$900

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and keyboard/trackpad are the most important things. I only use it around my house so portability and battery life aren't as important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

The Dell G5 weights 5.18 lbs according to specs. That's fine for me, but I wouldn't want anything much heavier than that.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15", but I'd be open to 17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do a lot of side project programming in VS Code and occasionally in full Visual Studio. I want to be able to run Docker, Kubernetes, and SQL Server and/or Postgres locally on my machine for testing before pushing to the cloud. I use Sketchup for drawing out my house for home improvement projects and would like to get into rendering of those drawings. I don't have a program picked out for video editing as I have been using iMovie on my older Mac Mini, but I'll say Premiere Pro for editing of 4K drone video.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mainly Rocket League at this point and strategy/simulation games like Cities Skylines. I used to be into first-person shooters, but not as much anymore. If I were to get back into them, I don't really care if I have to play on lower settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, touchpad, and display are important

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current laptop has lasted 8 years and performance-wise has been behind for like 5 of those years. I would like similar longevity but a little more future proof on the processing side. I've toyed with the idea of just going with an integrated graphics card, but it seems like the more powerful processors are coupled with a dGPU and I would rather have more performance. I am liking what I'm seeing from the Ryzen chips with a preference for either the 4600H or 4800H.

My budget is around $1,200 but would consider higher for something that's truly unique and worth the money. I will be using the laptop for FL Studio and that's basically it. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks !!!

    Hi All,

Appreciate your suggestions based on experience.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      Around £1900.00 / $2500.00 roughly
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No, new only.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priority is with performance / build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Yes prefer portable due to travel for work commitments.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13/14" - be good to know those who have experience with 3:2 ratio etc, I do a lot of productivity work.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not really added bonus if we can run some older titles, but I do not use the laptop for it.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard/trackpad and reliabilty is definitely important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm currenty looking to upgrade the work laptop so think I have a relatively reasonable budget, I do a lot of productivity work with office suite, online applications running etc, I'd like it to be portable as I travel and use the laptop daily and rarely use external monitors etc, I'm not fussed about 4K screen as it drains battery.
I've been considering the below options but really would be good to hear based on knowledge and experience from users
      Laptops i've considered -
-Surface Laptop or Surface book 3 (I heard a Surface laptop 4 is coming?)
      -HP Spectre x360 (13 or 14)
      -Dell XPS 13 most likely.

Again appreciate any help from those who have experience or knowledge on laptops and your thoughts on the best options out there, I prefer reliability and build quality as opposed to the cost value in honesty.

Around $2000, live In the USA

    The Form LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $2000, willing to go a little higher, and I live in the USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No, I am not

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and build quality over everything else. I enjoy gaming, and my current laptop, an Acer Nitro 5, can't be closed because its hinge is a little broken. I'd like to avoid that with my next laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all. Build quality>weight/thinness every time.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 15.4 inches. Higher is not necessary but would prefer not to go lower.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use R studio/SAS for data stuff, and as for games, I would like to be able to run something like Shadow of War or Hitman 3, which my current machine can't handle.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As mentioned above, Shadow of War at high settings or Hitman 3 at decent settings both with 60fps would be amazing. I'd also like this laptop to last for a while, so it'd be nice if it could play newer games down the line.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Again, build quality over everything else. Also, I don't know if the audio quality for speakers affects headphones at all, but if it does, I'd prefer for the sound card to be decent.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd also prefer an SSD of at least 1TB, and a machine that doesn't overheat like crazy. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I just want to say thank you to whoever takes the time to read this whole post :)
