This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Just upgraded from laptop with I5 2450m which i'd use the IGPU to play games to Ryzen 5 1600af and blown away.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:58 AM PST

I went the all decade with this laptop and i had of fun with it. It served well. I mostly played emu games and light web browsing. This year i had the urge play a newer games and i decided to give me new year gift. Just posting this because i read a lot of stuff that helped towards picking parts. Thank you redditors. You don't know but you may be helping someone without knowing. Parts breakdown:

Ryzen 5 1600AF Cooler Master Hyper 212 Gigabyte B450m DS3H 32gb ram 3000mh CL16 from Crucial GTX 1660 Super Galax White SSD Samsumg 970 evo Plus 500gb, boot drive 2x SSD Team Group T-Force 480gb, no hard drivers anymore, Yay.

My brother borrowed one of his spare cases, it's a segotep something. I haven't

Happy New Year Ryzen 5600x + RTX 3070 Build Complete!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:28 AM PST

    I finally upgraded from an i5 4690k / GTX 970 to a Ryzen 5600x / RTX 3070, and I cannot believe how well it's turned out.

    Pics here

    Full build video here

    A few things to note:

    1. Getting a Ryzen 5600x - This was tough as parts have been scarce and way over-priced in the UK, but I managed to get the 5600x in a bundle deal with the MSI B550m Mortar.

The Mortar probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but it reviewed well and meant I was guaranteed the 5600x before the end of the year. This bundle also allowed me to add Corsair Vengeance RAM (2x8gb) and a Cooler Master MWE Gold 80+ for a slightly reduced price and free shipping.

Getting this bundle also meant the retailer would flash the bios, install the CPU, stock cooler and RAM for me. Nice!

    2. Getting the RTX 3070 - I honestly thought I wouldn't get my hands on one until at least mid-January if not February. However thanks to PartAlert, managed to get the Founders Edition as soon as it came in to stock on Dec 21 - I have a video that details how I got it here

I managed to install the GPU in the wrong PCIe slot (PCIe x4)! But after playing some Warzone and only getting 100-110fps average, I realised something wasn't right. Put the GPU in the x16 slot and am now averaging 140-150fps at 1440p. Phew!

    3. Turning on for the first time - Thanks to the pre-built mobo/cpu bundle, the build posted first time. Nothing feels better!

    4. 1440p / 144hz! - The LG 27GL83A is incredible, and after driver installation, Windows already had it at 144hz (I checked Nvidia as well). Buttery smooth!

    5. Overclocking? - I haven't overclocked anything, other than setting the RAM at 3600MHz of course. But when the time comes, I may look into a better cooler and another case fan, but at the moment things are running really efficiently. Cool!

Need Help: Asus TUF 3080 hitting around 88C while gaming

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST

Hey guys, I build this computer a few weeks ago with an Asus TUF 3080 and 5900x. Usually, when I'm gaming, like GTA V or COD Cold War, I'll have all my settings on ultra and comfortably get 180 FPS around 67 C for a generally smooth game experience. Like yesterday I realized that the games started to lag and the frames were down to like 27 FPS. I checked the 3080 temps and it was pinned at 92 C. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I restarted the computer and the temps hovered around 77 C, which is better than 92, but certainly not as cool as they usually are.

Right now I have all stock settings for the 3080 since it was performing well out of the box and I didn't see any reason to change them. What any advice you guys have?

I currently have Corsair 465x as the case with 3 intake fans at the front, 2 exhaust at the top, 1 exhaust at the back

I got scammed. Please be careful when buying stuff on here.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

Please don't answer any questions or get any products from a dude on a Reddit named nightdicraw. I gave this man $750 for an rtx 3080 FE. And once I sent the money he said shipped it, but when I asked for a tracking number. He didn't want to respond. It's been 3 days. I've learned my lesson, and no red flags went off to me at first. The money was sent through Amazon gift card (I know that should've been a sign). When I sent him the money as he was quite "genuine" with what he said, he had images of the product working and everything. I still have them and conversation photos. So this just a fair warning to the people of this community on Reddit. Don't get scammed by people who will sell you stuff, and please be smarter than me when it comes to this.

Fixing shi* by yourself feels so god damn good !

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 12:43 AM PST

I used to be scared to diagnose my pc by myself, because once i dropped my cpu ... and i had to fix damn pins on it . that accident caused one ram slot to boil . so i had to use only one 4 gb ram.

for a long time i was scared to remove any component and used to call someone else to help me. but now i search google and just do it myself . and it is great: it costs 0$ and feels so fuc*ing good :D

P.S my monitor did not show anything , but pc fans all were spining. i fixed it by removing gpu and ram and placing them back. it works fine now :)

    Reminder: Disable Discord overlay

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST

Tldr; Discord overlay causes huge FPS drops when gaming. Disable it

Hopefully this helps someone that may be running into FPS issues as this was the case for me and my friends.

Long story short our friends like to stream their gameplay on discord while waiting and other stuff etc. so we would notice their FPS counter would be extremely low and laggy.

One friend running a 1660 super and another running a 1070 were experiencing huge FPS drops when playing warzone and TFT. Another friend suggested they turn off the discord overlay...

Then bam! Instant FPS boost. From ~50fps to 100+ FPS on low settings. It was an instant serotonin booster. We were relieved to see it.

This may not work for everyone but hopefully it may make a difference for somebody out there going thru what my friends were experiencing... and hopefully someone from Discord will see and possibly fix this!

Help, components are dying after getting a 3080.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:45 AM PST

Old pc parts: CPU: Ryzen 3900x Motherboard: MSI MPG B550 Gaming plus Ram: 2x32gb Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 @ 3600mhz PSU: Corsair Rm750 BOOT SSD: Sabrent 1th Rocket pcie gen4 m.2 drive Keep in mind this setup worked fine for about 3 months straight.

This started when I went to get my new Aorus 3080 on the 27th December. After getting home I swapped my old 1660S over to it and after about an hour it restarted, and kept restarting more frequently until it couldn't even boot windows. I then tried to diagnose the issue by reseating the ram, updating the bios and even swapping back to a GTX 710 which still resulted in crashes. Therefore I decided to take it to a repair shop ($90) which told me it's probably my power supply so I upgraded to a SilverStone 1000W Strider 80+ Platinum ($300) however this still resulted in restarting issues. I then swapped out the motherboard to an Asrock B550 Steel Legend AM4 ATX Motherboard ($250) thinking the 3080 might have pulled too much power through the pcie slot however this was also a bust. Due to some corruption I saw on the previous m.2 which I had to reinstall windows on several times I found this following thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/cztzfi/disabling_pcie40_for_stable_boot_with_rx_5700_xt/) which says: "After a lot of troubleshooting, driver updates, clean installs and cold boots. I can confirm PCIe4 is extremely unstable when your system boot drive and GPU are both PCIe4. " So I swapped out my pcie 4 m.2 for an older one I had around and had success for a a few hours. However at this time I noticed my 4tb hdd with l my data on was no longer spinning at all and is now dead ($150 + priceless data). However now I am running into corruption and freezing on the current m.2 and I really don't know how much more of this I can take and I have spent pretty much all I had on trying to get this working.

    Ryzen 7 5800x vs 2700x?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 12:41 AM PST

I have a Geforce 3080. I do like to record my gameplays using OBS, but I do realize on some games it slows down my FPS - wondering if any of you veterans can point me in the right direction, should I upgrade? Or is it more of a software issue? Much thanks and respect. I have 32GB ram.

Is buying a prebuilt really not worth it?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:21 PM PST

Just a few days ago I ordered a prebuilt pc with a ryzen 5 3600, nvidia gpu 1660ti and dd4 ram 16gb for around 900, the pc itself has a 90 day return with 2 years of protection for every part of the pc it was 925 dollars which I know I could have gotten a rtx 2060 if I made it myself because buying part by part is always cheap, was this a good buy? Or should I return in in 2 months and hopefully parts are cheaper?

Aha , so it was my fault

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:52 PM PST

Right so the other day I made a post on here asking about my psu as I assumed my newly built pc wasn't turning on due to a dead psu because of the fan not spinning. In the end I did the paper clip test and boom would you look at that the psu fan almost instantly starts spinning, after that I tried to trouble shoot my pc and came to my final assumption it was a dead motherboard...oh was I idiotic to believe that...Turns out I connected the front panel connectors into the wrong place , instead of connecting them to the JFP1 I stupidly connected them to the JUSB1 (Guess reading the manual isn't such a bad idea after all). Such a simple mistake yet I still made it , well I'm just glad its all sorted now, thanks for all the help in my time of need xD

Am I missing something on this deal?? Cost is $1,215 in USD

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:27 AM PST

    https://www.newegg.ca/abs-ala221/p/N82E16883360018

I originally was planning to custom build myself but I honestly tried to look at finding a way to build this myself but couldn't create a build that provided any substantial lower costs.

Is it an okay build? Am I missing something such as sketchy parts? There's no other prebuild that offers a 3060 and Ryzen 5 that's even close to this price point.

Have white graphics cards gone extinct?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:37 PM PST

I'm looking for a good upgrade from my RTX 2060 and there seems to be absolutely zero white graphics cards that are available for purchase, i understand the stock with 3000 series but even 2000 series cards I just cant find at all. Does anyone know (preferably in the UK) where I can get a gpu in white to upgrade?

How complicated is this gonna be?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:02 PM PST

A guy helped me pick out parts, and I have my mind set on what I want. Nothing super fancy for like cyber punk, but its still nice. 32GB ddr4, a 3060 ti, a ryzen 7, etc.

Now, im a prebuilt guy. My current pc is pre built, my old pc was built by my dad years ago. Now I'm wondering, how complicated is this gonna be? Even with YT tutorials, and my dad if I need him, am I still gonna struggle? Never done anything besides pull my graphics card out at one point, and RAM sticks.

Looking for a graphics card upgrade

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:55 PM PST

I recently had to rebuild my PC since my motherboard died over the summer, but I'm still using an NVidia GeForce GTX 770 from like 2012 despite upgrading pretty much everything else (Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Asus Prime X570-P mobo). Anyone have any suggestions for a modern graphics card (that isn't too hard to find in stock) which can handle recent games at high settings and is within a 3 to 400 dollar budget?

In India 2700 is nearly 4k rupees less than 3600 which I can use in a better mother board for over locking

    Which one to get

Edit 1: 2700 also comes with better cooler for over clock and have RGB ,and we all know RGB means more FPS

My AIO is making a rattling/growling noise, should I be concerned? Will it damage the pc?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:10 PM PST

I have a kraken x63 and I've had it for about 2-3 months now. It was fine at first but about 2 weeks ago I noticed it had a rattling or growling noise and it's constant. I've tried almost every solution, I reinstalled it with the tubes going from the bottom of the radiator to the pump and vice versa. I've tried taking the pump out and leaving the radiator on its side for 30 minutes, the growling continues. However, on the NZXT cam software, I'd I mess with the the cooling usage and put it to like 25-30% the rattling stops, when ours over 50% it starts to happen again. I don't really mind the noise it's not too loud but definitely noticeable. Should I RMA it? Is it dangerous to my pc? If it's not dangerous and it's just the noise I don't really care, just wondering if it will damage my cooler or the cpu.

ok guys i need some help

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:22 PM PST

So I just recently purchased the PNY 500gb CS900 SSD. I went to put it in and forgot to get a SATA cable (I have 2 hard drives one with windows and one with games and stuff) so I transferred the data I wanted to keep and use until I could get another SATA cable from my games hard drive to my os hard drive. Then I unhooked the games hard drive and plugged it into the SSD. I booted up my pc and looked in windows explorer and didn't see the SSD. I looked in Disk Management and still didn't find it. I moved the SATA cable around after turning the pc off again and tried that. Still didnt see it. So now I'm lost and not sure what to do. I'd really appreciate some help cause I just wanna play some Tarkov lol.

    Looking help upgrading PC components

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:21 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my PC (motherboard + CPU for now), and was wondering about the possible compatibility issues between those new components and the ones I won't be changing

I'm thinking about an upgrade kit that has:
    - CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz
    - Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk

    I currently have:
    - GPU: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
    - RAM: 4x 4GB G Skill RipJaws 5 Series DDR4 2133MHz
    - PSU: LEPA MX F1 550W

    My questions are:
    1. Would I need to change my RAM? (I think I don't, but I wanna make sure)
    2. Is my GTX 1060 going to be compatible with this new motherboard?
    3. Do I need a more powerful PSU?

    Thank in advance!

    Cheers
