    Budget laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT

Sorry in advance, you lot must get this alot.

Off to uni in September and don't want to be taking my desktop rig.

Thinking about picking up a budget laptop, <£500. The less I spend the better, preparing to be student skint n all.

Somthing mostly for media and uni work, but i would also like it to be able to run some of my less demanding games (on medium to low graphics) stuff the likes of xcom, dark souls 1, red orchestra 2, Skyrim.

Built my last pc a few years back and have not kept up with tech at all, feel totally lost looking into all the new GPUs and CPUs.

Any help would be a great help. Thanks alot.

Can anyone tell me if this a mistake on the Dell UK website

As far as I can tell the cheaper option here has 1 tb of storage and the more expensive option only has 512gb - can anyone explain why this might be the case or if this is a mistake?

    Acer Swift 3 (Ryzen 7 4700u) vs Lenovo c740 (Intel i7-10510)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Please help me evaluate which laptop I should get, is the extra money worth it for the better screen on the Lenovo? How does the performance compare for playing games? From what I've seen, the swift is truly amazing.. apart from the screen

    Swift 3 specs:

    • AMD Ryzen 7 4700U Mobile Octa-Core (Up to 4.1GHz) with Radeon Graphics
    • 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Widescreen LED-backlit Display
    • 8GB LPDDR4 Onboard Memory
    • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD

shitty colour (like 56% rgb i saw), dim screen (250 nits) would NEED a monitor

    Price: $899 CAD

    Lenovo Yoga C740 (customized)

    • 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10510U (1.80GHz, up to 4.90GHz with Turbo Boost, 8MB Cache) Intel® UHD Graphics
    • 14" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, touchscreen, anti-glare, with Dolby® Vision, 300nit
    • 8GB DDR4 2666MHz (Soldered) (16gb + $95)
    • 256GB SSD PCIe (512 gb + $65)

Price: Without mentioned upgrades, $1059.99, with upgrades $1219.99

Anything else that's comparable to these is welcome

Would a SSD speed up a laptop with Pentium Silver CPU and 4GB RAM?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:21 AM PDT

My girlfriend has a HP Notebook 15-bs234wm which she got for $300 at Walmart a few years back (she's poor). Would upgrading her 500 GB hard drive with the cheapest SSD be worth it to speed it up? She just uses it for Internet and office productivity.

Specs: 500 GB 5400 rpm SATA, Intel UHD Graphics 605, 4 GB DDR4-2400, Intel Pentium Silver N5000 (1.1 GHz base, 2.7 GHz burst, 4 cores)

    Streaming 4K on xps 9500

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:46 PM PDT

So I've got the 9500 4K 1TB i7 10750H 32gb 2x16 with 3 years pro support plus with onsite repair. Cool thing about doing it through this business side is if I have an issue I get someone from North America on the phone and they actually send someone out to my work to attempt to repair the computer for 2,611.43 through the business side of the dell website coming July 10th.

Anyways, I'm a bit nervous with this being the first gen of the new xps and it seems a lot of people are having issues. I can still cancel my order and have been eyeballing the Surface Book 3 i7 32gig. I'm an insurance agent and I do not need the 4K at all. I was just hoping to be able to stream Netflix in 4K on my laptop and to an external monitor. But I'm reading there are a bunch of things the laptop has to have in order to make that possible. So here are my questions

    1. Can I stream 4K movies on either of these laptops and will I be able to stream to an external 4K monitor?

    2. If I cannot stream 4k on either of these two machines and to a external monitor, is there a laptop where this is possible? Money really isn't a problem here unless it is over 4 grand. I can't go Mac because the software I use for work isn't compatible with Mac. I know about boot camp but it just isn't worth even the smallest chance that it wont work. This is my profession.

    Thanks!

TUF vs NITRO 5 UK ?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:03 PM PDT

ASUS TUF FX505DT 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5, GTX 1650, 512 GB SSD

    £700 Currys

    ACER Nitro 5 AN515-54 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Intel® Core™ i5, GTX 1650, 256 GB SSD

    £650 Currys

Which would you guys recommend its mostly going to be used to College work/YouTube and hopefully when I find my love for gaming again play them on high settings aswell as the laptop being able to last many years.

I am drawn to ACER as it looks ideal for my Intended purpose and ideally priced at £650 however the 120HZ screen on ASUS TUF sounds brilliant. If there is a cheaper option you guys can suggest please go ahead and let me know.

Need a laptop for school and some (light) gaming if possible

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:51 PM PDT

Hello, as stated in the title i am in the market for a new laptop, it's be used for school 75% of the time but i'd like the ability to play games on it if possible. What i'm looking for in terms of specs/other things are listed below

    Physical aspects:

Build quality: i would like something robust, as i will be taking it to and from school. This is necessary

Keyboard: honestly, a good keyboard is nice but anything that isn't outright terrible will suffice

Trackpad: i have been spoiled by the macbook air's trackpad, so a good trackpad is preferred

Screen: touchscreen isn't needed. A highish resolution is very appreciated, along with a good refresh rate

IO: i'm okay with carrying around a dongle if it is needed, not a huge deal in my opinion

    Specs:

Cpu: would prefer an i7 8th generation or above. I would GLADLY use a AMD ryzen-based system (in fact, i'd rather use ryzen if possible)

Gpu: dedicated gpu if possible, nothing insane like an rtx 2060 or above. A 1660/1060 would be more than enough for the programs/ games i'd play (valorant, minecraft, borderlands 3, and possibly some programs for school)

Memory: 16gb ram preferred, cam do 8gb if it is made up for in the cpu/gpu dpt.

Storage: anything at or over 256gb should do just fine. (No hdd please, sdd only)

Brand preference: absolutely none. If it is a good computer that roughly follows what's listed above. I'd like this thing to last me 4 or so years, so nothing unreliable/prone to problems i can't fix please/thank you.

Budget-from how it's looking right now, below 1600. If it is something that i cannot go without/it's an insane deal, i'll splurge and dip into my savings. I'll be buying manufacturer refurbished to hopefully get a better laptop for less. Thank you for reading/recommending!

    Recover data from dead laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:18 PM PDT

My motherboard is toast and the laptop won't boot. It turns on for like 3 seconds then turns off again. I pulled the hardrive and got whatever I had saved to that pulled off but how do I get everything I (stupidly) saved right to the OS? It wasn't on the HD when I pulled it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Looking for a good Laptop

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:15 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm starting to program and looking forward to it, I need to buy a laptop for the portability and I really don't need any special gaming performance, I dont need much storage to and at least 16GB of RAM, I'll use it mostly for programming and maybe some school work etc...
I don't to buy a very cheap one because I want to keep it for at least 3-5 years or maybe more. I have a budget of about 1500-2000 and I welcom any laptop of any Operating System. Thx to everyone that helps. (For now I just saw the MacBook air i7 1.2ghz 16gb RAM and a Dell XPS)

    Dedicated and integrated graphics cards

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 11:49 AM PDT

I have an HP laptop with Intel UHD 620 graphics card and an AMD Radeon R7 M440. I have never been able to switch to the AMD Card. Every thing I look up online to help me with this does not apply to my laptop somehow. For instance, just go into the AMD software and click switchable graphics, my AMD software has no switchable graphics setting. My AMD software has no 3D settings.

I have Sonic Generations, which has a configuration tool. When I click display adapter, it only recognizes the Intel card. I even went into my BIOS and there was nothing for graphics cards.

I don't understand what's happening. I feel like my integrated card is just sitting there and I can see it but somehow Windows just doesn't want to talk to it.

What the hell do I do?! This is maddening. I even updated the AMD drivers and all it seemed to do was make my laptop disk usage run at 100%.

Is there any way to just use the AMD card over the Intel? Is there anyway to make this POS HP laptop run better?

Ideally something below $700, but upto $800 is good.

    Dell Inspiron 15" 5000 with i7-1065G7 @ 1.3GHz, Win 10 Home, 16GB RAM with 2GB MX330, 512 GB SSD

    15.6" 1080 Touch Antiglare Panel, Intel® Wi-Fi 6 (2x2) Gig + and Bluetooth® 5.0 with 4-Cell 53WHr Battery

    2x USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A, 1x USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C with PowerDelivery and Video

    1x HDMI Out 1.4b

    1x Combo Headphone/Microphone Jack

    1x Media Card Reader

At a glance, probably panel is not the best, SSD is older SSD not M.2, Ram is most likely soldered and not upgradeable, possibly fragile?

    Laptop lifespan?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:39 AM PDT

I'm planning to get a new laptop (with a Ryzen 5 and about 8gb of ram). How long should I expect this to last for if I am careful with it (try not to drop or spill things on it) and use it lightly nearly every day for 4 years?

What should I expect to die out or become obsolete first in that time? The battery, screen, or the processor?

I'm entering highschool and want to get an idea on how long my first laptop will last me.
