    Simple Questions - February 29, 2020

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk Winner Announcement

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:22 PM PST

A fortnight back, we came to you with the chance to win a Limited Edition GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk video card, thanks to NVIDIA. A winner has been selected.

We asked you to tell us about your experiences of helping or being helped on /r/buildapc, and you delivered. With around 5000 entries to sort through, our jaded moderation team has been overwhelmed into feeling emotion again thanks to your tales of wholesome community engagement and assistance.

Without further ado, we're happy to announce that the winner of the card is /u/Switchen with their answer:

This subreddit is my go-to when I have nothing to do. I love to prowl new posts and help those that have troubleshooting issues. Some of them are simple fixes, but there are plenty where a more in-depth troubleshooting conversation has to happen. I can't nail down any specific interaction on here, but my favorite thing ever is to have the OP come back with something like, "It works! Thanks so much!" Building a PC the first time can be stressful, so it's great to be able to help these new builders out.

Congratulations /u/Switchen and thanks to NVIDIA for their generosity on this - check out the card and other chances to win via Nvidia's twitter and their #RTXON campaign.

For the 5000-odd rest of you, all is not lost. Enter our Zotac giveaway now for the chance to win an i5 9600k / RTX 2060 PC. Entry's completely free, and you can throw in some cash for the ASPCA to net some additional entries. Get on it!

Would I be good with this build to game and do normal computer tasks? I also have an online class with just an Ebook and some "live" videos. I'm trying to not be impulsive but it'd be awesome to go grab this and put it together tonight.

Or should I swap some things out and just order and wait for a better PC

I was in the middle of a game and my pc just completely powered off (not a standard shutdown) then automatically booted back up again with no issues. But it's strange so something isn't right somewhere.

    Question about 9700k cooler

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:34 PM PST

    Hello all!

I was planning on buying a new cooler for my 9700k and was having some concerns.

I currently have a 120mm aio for my CPU that I was going to put on my GPU with an NZXT mount after my new CPU cooler comes.

My main concern is space. I only have a 200mm size opening in the top and can only fit 2x120mm fans in the front. I was worried that if I got a 240mm and put it in the front it would increase temps significantly. I also don think that a air cooler would fit well since I want to keep my old cooler installed for my GPU.

Should i go for a smaller air cooler? Would an 240mm aio in the front affect my temps negatively?

PC pic: (sorry for the bad quality)

    https://imgur.com/a/YMQujkc

Forgot to add that I was planning on overclocking that is the main reason for the upgrade.

    Thanks!

How do you store old pc parts?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:45 PM PST

Hey guys new here! Just tore down my first pc and will be salvaging some parts for the next build. I want to keep the cpu and ram as both are being replaced but am curious how you guys (if at all) properly store "old" components no longer being utilized but that you want to keep.

FYI: I no longer have the original box for the ram nor the clamshell container for the cpu.

Upgrade current machine or build a new one?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:08 PM PST

I've been debating between upgrading my current build or building a new machine and I was hoping you all could help. I haven't stayed super up to date with cards or processors so am not really sure what's out there at the moment.

The PC works well for the most part. I have had some weird RAM issues but none for awhile. It has an A2 boot error that it hangs on for a second but it boots up quickly every time. I was recently editing some giant still image files that it has a bit of trouble with, which is what made me think of this upgrade vs build.

I use the PC for gaming, editing, motion graphics, and compositing. I do a lot of work in 4k and heavy image work, so I want the PC to perform that well as well as play games on high graphics and all that. I've been thinking about upgrading the RAM and getting a 1tb SSD.

    current build:

    MB: MSI z97 gaming 5

    Processor: Intel i7 4790k @4.00 GHz

    RAM: 16gb DDR3 SDRAM

    GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080

Storage: SATA 250gb SSD, SATA 500GB SSD, 2tb 5400RPM hdd

Is it worthwhile for me to upgrade ram?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:34 PM PST

when I built my PC I used a single stick of 16gb DDR4 2400Megaherts ram. This works just fine normally but lately I have been getting into Minecraft again and when I play Minecraft It will struggle to load chunks on time and it will take longer than usual to render frames. I have heard that this is a RAM related issue with Minecraft and when I overclocked my RAM to 2666Megaherts I experienced a performance boost. Is it worthwhile to upgrade my RAM to a duel stick (2x 8gb) 3000Megaherts?

New gaming build, hoping for second opinions.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:10 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming primarily, internet usage/watching videos second. Not 4k, not VR, no streaming.

I'm not in a particular rush if there are releases/price drops expected within the next few months.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Highest requirement title is probably Star Citizen. Due to limited desk space won't be running more than 3x 1080 screens, likely 1-2. Other games include The Division 2, and possibly Borderlands 3/Metro/Outer Worlds.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Aiming for the $1000-$1500 range, possibly including a new screen to replace the 21" ASUS I'm using.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA. I have some gift cards for Amazon that I'm trying to use as well

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Mainly checking if there's any big issues.

PC can't come back on after sleep

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:35 PM PST

Hi so I recently built a new PC but noticed a problem with it. If I leave for a while and it goes into sleep, or if I put it into sleep / shut down from the windows menu, then when I boot it up again it gets stuck or something. No signal to monitors, no bluetooth, my keyboard doesn't even connect which I can tell because none of the caps lock / num lock, lights come on. The only fix to get out of this is to hold down the power button and then after it turns off press the power button again to turn it back on. It works but it's really annoying having to restart my computer every time I get back to it.

If anyone knows how I can fix this, please let me know. Thanks!

RGB sync question (NZXT and Gigabyte)

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:29 PM PST

Hi there! I'm planning to build my first rgb ITX PC with an NZXT H210i. I would use 2 AER RGB Fans and a Kraken X52. The rgb of those would sync up using CAM. But here is the question, I've been looking for the Gigabyte 2060 Super OC 3X (or Gaming X 2060 super). Those GPUs have RGB. And the mobo would be an MSI Z390i or Aorus Z390i Pro (don't know which one should I choose). The RAM is from Corsair RGB (so no problem there with RGB Fusion or Mystic Light compatibility) But how can I sync up the rgb from NZXT and the rgb from Gigabyte RGB Fusion? Just like this video https://youtu.be/pfxX0MuUdYA

Please give me your opinion about which RTX 2060 Super (MSI or Gigabyte) and Mobo should I choose

    Thanks in advance!

It hasn't done that in game yet but mostly if I just leave the FiveM page open while I'm doing something else or sometimes it'll do that or if I'm in Adobe Illustrator. Any ideas why?? Switching from Intel to AMD

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:39 AM PST

I was wondering if someone could possibly give me a little advice. I was looking to make a few upgrades to my PC and I am going to be switching from Intel to AMD. I don't know a whole lot about AMD so I was looking for a little help. I currently have an I5-8400 and was curious as to what AMD processor I should pick up. I was looking at either the 2700x or 3700x. I have the money to go with the 3700x I'm just not sure if I actually need that though. It is mainly for gaming and I rarely do anything super intensive. I'm wondering if it would just be smart to go with the 3700x so I can just have it for the future. Thanks to anyone that helps and if you have any other suggestions besides those two processors please share. Thank you!
