Looking for input on a gaming laptop/3d printing amature

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:37 PM PST

    Hello all :)

Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is at the high end around $3500 but im sure theres laptops that fit my needs for much less. I live in Canada so ill likley be buying/ordering to here.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My needs are for a gaming laptop that will last 5+ years hopefully. Im interested in learning about 3d printing and getting involved with rendering parts for that. Battey life is a plus but not a priority. I do want a minimum of 1Tb SSD.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither make or break it for me, though i travel alot.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Im a Windows user.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. This area i would appriciate input from through your expierence. Im thinking 13-15.6". What would help is if you had both a 13" and a 15.6" side by seide, does the 13" feel cramped when useing it for gaming or typing. Like noticably over the 15.6"? My prespective is the 17" laptops seem huge but otherwise dont impact my use between that and a 15.6".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Im not sure if ill end up doing CAD work or not. Of so itll be for hobby purpouses. I mostly play old games like early 2000's but would like to keep up with new games like Civ 5, Skyrim, Doom Eternal, Halo MCC. With this in mind im leaning on an Intel I7 or its competitors equivalent.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Doom (1993), Masters of Orion 2, Red Alert, Skyrim, Crysis, Civ, Halo MCC, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein NWO. Settings wise id say so long as it seems smooth im happy. It would be neat to push some of the newer games to their limits to see what ive been missing.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Apart from the internals and the size, a key factor i am looking for is a good keyboard. It needs to have backlight on the keys so I can see them in the dark. Im interested in the upfront layout of the Asus Zephyrus 531, but the marketing guys have me eyeballing the new Razer Blade 15.

Touch screen is almost a negative feature in my books.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. for what i need in a laptop im sure $1500-2000 covers it pretty well. The front mounted keyboard has really perked my interest but perhaps thats just a novelty. What do you think about it? Ive only seen 4 types of laptops with that feature.

Other than keyboard, i want longevity out of my laptop though im not interested in upgrading it at a later point as id rather have a desktop by then.

I want to buy a decked out laptop for gaming and content creation ($2300~ USD). I'm torn on whether to buy now or wait.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:15 AM PST

There's a OEM version of the Eluktronics Mag-15 here in Asia that I could buy for around $2300. i7-9750H, RTX 2070 Max Q, 32GB Ram, 144hz screen, and a speedy 1TB Samsung 950 Evo Plus.

I feel like this would be a good upgrade over my current laptop, the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (i7-8650U, GTX 1060) for gaming and content creation.

However there is so much talk of the Ryzen 4000 chips coming out soon that I wonder if I should suck it up and wait a few months before committing. The Surface Book has a great display and honestly still functions well despite the throttling and sluggishness when trying to edit/render 4k proxies.

Am I getting caught up in the upgrade hype, or is there really some worthwhile technology just around the corner? Another of my concerns is that there won't quite be a laptop like the 'Mag-15' for the new chips and video cards anyways. Weight, portability, and build quality is important to me. I also don't want some crazy gamer machine with weird fonts and branding. Part of me is thinking that, for 4k video editing and gaming for the next few years, the Mag-15 machine will be more than enough.

    What do you guys think?

Alternative to 2020 LG Gram 17?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:41 AM PST

Is there a decent alternative to LG Gram 17 for non-gamers? Here are my requirements:

Total budget and country of purchase: 2500USD India

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -2 in 1 good to have, good battery life is mandatory

How important is weight and thinness to you? can manage upto 2KGs

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. at least 15.6, larger the better

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no games, no video/photo editing - just coding and watching movies/shows

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is good to have, touch screen is good to have as I am used to it in my current convertible, finger-print reader is mandatory, can do without optical drive and save weight

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would need a long lasting build - looking at 16G RAM and 512G SSD, probably an i5 would suffice, no fancy graphics needed, but guess ice lake processors in a slim form factor would be ideal for my requirement.

LF Durable, reliable laptop for video, audio editing, and general college work. 2000$CAD budget

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 07:32 PM PST

A bit of context, I bough an MSI GS65 9SD recently, but I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it. Notably fan failure, wifi chip failure, and poor audio systems.

I have the option to return it, but I'm not sure if I want to. Can anyone vouch for this laptop? If it's really that bad I'll look into getting something else.

Total budget and country of purchase:

2000$ Canadian including taxes, so 1800$ without.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life would be nice but it's not my main criteria.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Mildly important. Under 6lbs would be nice.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or Mac only.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inches or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Da Vinci Resolve, photoshop, Illustrator, Audacity, Guitar Pro.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliability and longevity are my two musts. I also need to run the aforementioned programs. The rest is secondary.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Can anyone vouch for the MSI GS65 9SD? If it's a good laptop, I'll keep it, but if it's a bad one I can definitely return it and get something else.

    Ultrabook / Dockingstation

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:14 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I'm looking to buy an ultrabook (13inch) for my girlfriend. She want's to use it for university stuff, mostly word, excel, pp, outlook, surfing, etc on the one hand and at home with a docking station (Razer Core X with a MSI GTX 1660 ti, so Thunderbolt 3 is required) for gaming AAA-games (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, etc).

I'm thinking it should have at least a decent 4-core cpu, 16gb ram and a 512 gb SSD. Price range is up to 1.500€ (we're from Germany).

I had a look at the Razer Blade Stealth, Dell XPS 13, Dell Inspiron 7391 2in1, and the Asus Zenbook.

Can anyone recommend one of the above or a completly different approach? Thanks and have a nice day :-)

    Need Recommendation / MacBook 16"

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

    Hi all,

Considering trading in my MacBook Pro 13" 8gb for a new MacBook Pro 16". Not sure which one to consider, so I'm asking for help.

I'm mainly coding web languages (PHP, SQL, JS, SCSS etc). So most of the times, I'm running 1 to 2 VMs, sometimes 3 for testing purposes ,+ other apps on my host machine (VSCode, Slack, Postman, Tables etc).

Which model should I consider? The i7 or the i9? Should I bump the RAM to 32gb?

I don't really care about graphics, those are the only 2 specs that matter to me, but I'm not sure how much the processor will influence the perfs, and if 16Gb will be enough on the long run (can't change it later).

I really don't want a debate on Mac VS Linux VS another machine, I've coded on a Mac for years and love it, and need it to build my Mac apps. Also I don't want to get into hacking Mac onto another laptop etc.

    Thanks for your help!

Trouble deciding on laptop for mother.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:44 AM PST

So I've been out of the game with laptops for quite a long time now as I've primarily been a desktop user (haven't had a need for a laptop).

I know my mother wants a laptop that she can use for the likes of web surfing, social media, YouTube, Netflix etc. just very general use. I know a lot of laptops can accomplish this, but I'm not wanting something cheap that will slow to a crawl in several months or start experiencing other issues.

Right now I'm tossing up between This Dell Inspiron 15 3000 and Asus VivoBook 15, but I'm also open to further suggestions. Ideally would want it to be over 15"+ with a 1080p display in the range $800 Australian.

Any insight will really be appreciated!

Total budget and country of purchase: Australia and 2000 AUD give or take 500$

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for the money would be great but I would also love a good battery life for a 6 hour school day with reasonably heavy use (not 6 hours of use more like 3 or 4).

How important is weight and thinness to you? carrying it around all day I would like it to be reasonably thin and not too heavy but I'm flexible on this

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows thanks

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" diagonal.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. a little bit of gaming (see below) but no video/photo editing, crome if that counts with probably 10ish tabs open

.If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no games specifically but I would like games like Minecraft, dark souls, GTA V the witcher 3 and similar games the play around 60fps with okay settings

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a reasonable amount of space, (at least 500gb) good build quality, USB options and a headphone jack, and whatever else the experts (you guys) think would be good

I’m looking at buying a Surface Laptop 3. Would I be fine with the base i5/8GB model or should I get the i7/16GB model for more of a future proof machine?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:18 PM PST

I'm replacing a 2012 MacBook Pro 13 with a 2.9GHz i7 and 16GB ram. I've been eyeing the Surface laptop 3 as mentioned above. All I'd be doing is some work in Microsoft office and some light editing every now and then. I'm just worried that if I get it 8GB won't be enough I'm a few years. Hoping I can get some of you all's input!

Good laptop for 3D animation & adobe + general schoolwork

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:47 PM PST

Hello to all of you! Sorry in advance for the bad formatting, I am on mobile and couldn't copy/paste the form right. My current laptop, as of this week, can barely open properly and can't connect to my wi-fi so I am sensing that it's approaching its final days and I would really appreciate some help. I've had this one for close to 5 years, I've had my friend fix it a few times but now I feel like it's time for a much needed upgrade.

Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1000$? The cheapest the better but I'm willing to go as high as 1300$ CAD if it's worth the price. Canada.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Good battery life is a plus, but I'm mostly looking for a laptop that has no problem running adobe programs and has good graphics. I'm not that much of a gamer (except for the occasional sims game) but will eventually need it for 3D animation so not anything will do. If I can get something that does that pretty well and fits in my price range, that would be great.

How important is weight and thinness to you?: Not that much, as long as it doesn't break if I carry it somewhere once in a while. Though aesthetically speaking, something lowkey would be cool too, I'm trying to avoid the typical thick rainbow keyboard gamer laptops

Which OS do you require: Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size: Something around 15'' would be best but I don't mind checking other laptops with different screen sizes if they're worth the price!

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photography editing/gaming?: Yes! Like I said, the adobe programs, maybe 3D softwares like zbrush and blender, and the very occasional video game.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play?: I honestly know nothing about pc gaming. As long as it can run Sims and some basic steam games like Life is Strange and Stardew Valley, I'm sold.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?: Touchpad is a must. I've grown used to working with a numpad so if the keyboard has one that would be a plus, but I can do without. Other than that, my current pc doesn't have the keys light up so it makes it harder to work in dark rooms. It's a bit silly but I'm kinda looking forward to work with one sjahdhsb

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I've been recommended to look for a laptop with a dedicated gpu instead of an integrated one. I've been eyeing the Acer Aspire 5 (A515-54-708W) but since the gpu is integrated I probably need something else. All my previous laptops have been Acers, so I'm fond of the brand, but I know they're not the best. Still, if you know some good acer laptops that fit my criterias, don't hesitate to suggest them ;)

I need a laptop with GTX 1650 and 1 TB HDD for around 800 USD.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 10:00 PM PST

I was pretty set on buying the Lenovo L340 until I saw the Jarrod's Tech video in which he says there's no actual hard drive bay in it. I need a lot of storage, so an HDD is necessary for me. A small SSD is preferred but not really necessary. My main use for the laptop will be gaming and some general school stuff, so the GPU is the most important part. I doubt I'll be able to get a 1660 in this price, so a 1650 is good enough for my use. Battery life is pretty important too - more than 5 hours at least. And I'd prefer it it wasn't too thick. I'm thinking an i5-9300H will be suitable for the price.

Total budget and country of purchase: around 800 USD, USA.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and specifications.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately important. Thinnes matters more than weight, but not too much.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming - new AAA titles.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Battlefield 1, Far Cry 5, Borderlands 3, etc. More than 50 fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It should be reliable, because I won't be able to claim warranty if something happens. The laptop will be purchased in the USA but I don't live there. And a precision touchpad is required for the scrolling gestures.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions :)

This is a laptop for my mother. She is not very tech-savvy. She is sort of used to Windows and has owned Windows computers since the 90s. But it's not like she is good at it where she would necessarily lose anything by going to Chrome OS.

She uses a computer to check email, look at facebook, upload photos of grandchildren.

She wants to be able to make videos but her videos consist of slideshows of photos over music. She has used Pinnacle Studio for this in the past. She also likes to "photoshop" peoples heads onto other bodies using Microsoft Paint. She claims to like Microsoft Word. She actually uses it for photoshop in conjunction with Microsoft Paint. I am trying to get her to be open to google docs to save money.

She uses google photos on her iphone.

Her current computer is an HP laptop from 2008. It can't hold a charge and it takes about 5 minutes to load something that usually takes a second on another computer.

    Thank you so much!

I've seen many people on here recommend it? Is there anything that makes it special?

Just got my huawei matebook x pro stolen. While that laptop was amazing, I realized that I didn't use its specs to its potential because I only used it for: google drive, Netflix, social media, etc. I like high build quality especially on the screen. Whats your recommendation?
