[X-POST] Laptop Purchasing Guide & Q+A - Holiday 2019 Edition! Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:39 PM PST Hey there, r/SuggestALaptop! This is a cross-post from r/laptops. To preface, I am a laptop refurbisher that has poured several hundred hours into working on (repasting, liquid metalling, undervolting CPU/GPU, upgrading panels/storage/Wi-Fi cards, etc.) several dozens of different laptop models over the last ~18 months, which include some of the following:
The list goes on, but I think this list covers the majority of laptops that are being purchased regularly in the past few months, secondhand or otherwise. I wanted to spread some of the knowledge I've accrued over the last year and try to help people that may be hunting for a new laptop this Black Friday/Holiday or looking for one as a gift for a loved one/friend/family member. I'm going to keep the guide itself short and sweet, and provide my recommendations for each "genre" of laptop I can think of, with some light rationale behind my choices. Best "Jack-Of-All-Trades" Laptop (Including gaming): Going to have to go with the Aero 15 variant from GIGABYTE on this one. It has the same footprint as the XPS 15, which is already quite compact, while sporting some powerful GPUs and color-calibrated 144Hz or 4K panels. It also rocks a 94WHr battery, making it an amazing productivity machine whilst on the go thanks to Optimus. Many of their units have went on sale on Amazon in the last few weeks, including the 1660Ti unit and the RTX 2070 mQ unit, both being awesome choices for gaming and video production/acceleration. Runner-up choice for me is the Razer Blade 15, but ultimately loses due to a higher price point and smaller battery. Best "Dedicated Gaming" Laptop: This one is a no-brainer for me. If portable gaming (at a desk) is the sole purpose of buying a machine, I am going to have to go with the ASUS Zephyrus S, specifically the unit with the keyboard shifted downward to make room for cooling. This machine can be configured all the way up to an RTX 2080, and has pretty much unparalleled cooling capabilities, making it my favorite choice, as many of the other thin/lights struggle with cooling the CPU when its pulling 45W and above. Look at some reviews from BOAT or OwnOrDisown and you'll see exactly how cool this thing runs! Runner-up choice for me is the 17" variant of the Lenovo Y740, which had even better thermals than the Zephyrus at a lower decibel rating, at the expense of a "meh" build quality and chonky bezels. Best Ultraportable (13-14") Laptop: XPS 13, specifically the 9360 configured with 8th-generation i5s/i7s. The 9370/9380 no longer have a USB-A port, which is super important to have to avoid having to bring a dongle everywhere you go, but still has a USB-C port to charge with. It's still incredibly small, has a great keyboard layout, and amazing screens, like the rest of the XPS lineup. It also still has upgradeable SSDs, unlike the 7390. Not to mention the amazing battery life of the 1080p variant! Best Ultrapremium Laptop (No/light gaming): For the money, you can't beat a good deal on a refurbished XPS 15 9570/7590! They are very easy to service, have insane battery life for the FHD AND 4K variants, and offer excellent CPU performance for its size with some undervolting. I know there are some QC issues acknowledged in the Dell subreddit, but that is why I always recommend buying a refurbished unit, which go through more rigorous QA testing than new units do, and also come with a 1y warranty that is upgradeable. Runner-up choice would be a similarly spec'd Thinkpad X1 Extreme, but is typically more expensive than the XPS and the 1080p screen is only 300 nits, compared to 400 and 500 for the XPS 15. It also has a smaller battery, but does weigh less. Best Hybrid/2-in-1/Artist Laptop: Although pricey, the Surface Book 2 (with the dGPU base) is absolutely extraordinary for what it can do. It has insane battery life despite its ridiculously bright screen and high DPI, great color accuracy and responsiveness for drawing/content creation, and enough horsepower to get most people through about anything. Of course, you can't really open/service this thing, so plan on buying an extended warranty if possible to protect your investment. Also, it seriously has such an amazing keyboard, it is such a pleasant experience to type on! My only nitpick is that the GPU runs quite hot when under load since the fan curve is super conservative unless you change the power plan to "Best Performance". Runner up would be the XPS 15 9575 with the i7-8705G and Vega M graphics for me, but falls short in battery life and its versatility when compared to the tablet mode of the SB2. That's about all I can type without cramping up for now ^ _ ^ Thus, feel free to comment any questions you may have about any model laptop you've been looking at/comparing against, where to find a good deal on a specific unit, what specs someone may need depending on workflows, anything you may need help with this Holiday season :) [link] [comments] |
2 in 1 laptop for college student Posted: 24 Nov 2019 02:54 AM PST Main uses will be reading an highlighting for class, writing and note taking (a lot) and media consumption Total budget and country of purchase: - above 10.000 and (1.474,69) below 15.000 DKR (2.212,03 USD) - Laptop are expensive where im from (Macbook pro - touchbar - i5, will run you 1.695,74 USD) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Which laptop to buy for a new Computer Science student? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:31 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 - $1200, Canada
I'm a university student who just got into the Computer Science program. I have an old desktop PC which got me through my first year of college. Since I'm now taking computer science courses and programming classes where bringing your own laptop is very important, I'm looking to buy a new laptop. I was looking into Dell laptops because I've heard Dell has better components and is more sturdy and reliable than some of the other brands (this may be wrong, I don't know a whole lot about laptops). I was looking at Dell's Vostro, Latitude, and Inspiron series but I'm totally open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Laptop's for Blender, Maya, or any other 3d programs? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 10:52 PM PST anyone know a good laptop for 3d programs? My budget is around $700 (USD) , €615 (EURO) , $1000 (AUD) I'm not really fussy on the form factor. although i wouldn't mind a 2 in 1 laptop. I'm not depending on the laptop for big workload's all the time [link] [comments] |

Everyday User Seeking New Laptop for Everyday Use! Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:13 AM PST UK user here - I've narrowed down my choice to 2 models if I could get some advice please? I'm an everyday user - streaming, browsing, itunes, some photo editing (photoshop/lightroom), word processing/spreadsheets. I currently have an Acer Asprire 5736Z. I've had it for 9 years and it's still going strong, but does lag a little and had the onboard storage replaced a couple of years ago. It lasts about 20 minutes on battery but the main reason is that it's Windows 7 so I need something newer! With black friday coming up, I have 1 of these in mind: I'm not looking to change again anytime soon, so something that will last is preferable (which is why I'm not looking at £200 models). Is there a huge different between the i7 and the Ryzen 5? Any advice would be appreciated! I'd love a MacBook, but let's keep alternative suggestions to sensible ones. Open to cheaper models too - not looking to go over this price. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

TLDR: 4k 60hz panel, SSD (any size), powerful enough to watch 4k video at 60fps without struggle. [link] [comments] |

To buy or to wait? (budget gaming laptops 2019) Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:51 AM PST I'm planning to upgrade from my Lenovo Y40, budget around $800 primarily for multimedia and some light gaming, skyrim, rocket league, csgo, etc. I see 1650 laptops going really cheap rn, but at the same time the release of next-gen consoles will probably make that gpu obsolete quick, is it wiser to hold or buy? It's not urgent, my current laptop is good enough for skyrim 1080p 60fps. * *Total budget and country of purchase:* $800, Malaysia * *Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.* Best specs for money, priority is monitor color accuracy, then GPU * *How important is weight and thinness to you?* Not very important * *Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.* N/A DOS is fine too * *Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.* 15.6" * *Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.* Skyrim, Rocket league, (possibly) witcher 3 Spyder 3, Solidworks, Matlab * *If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?* 1080p low settings at 60fps is least i'd go * *Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?* N/A * *Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.* Currently looking at MSI G63 light, 1650 max Q [link] [comments] |

Decide between Lenovo P53 and Dell Precision 15 7530 configs Posted: 23 Nov 2019 10:29 PM PST I was wondering if anyone can attest that the 9th gen cores in the p53 are worth the extra money. From this analysis (https://www.pcworld.com/article/3390994/intel-8th-gen-vs-9th-gen-core-cpu-which-should-you-buy.html), it seems there is only a "mild uptick" in performance gain for the benchmark tested. The lenovo configuration is: i7-9750H 2.60GHz, 16GB (8GB + 8GB) memory, 256GB SSD, Quadro T2000 4GB. Display: 15.6" FHD, 1920x1080 , IPS, 500 nits, Anti-Glare with Dolby Vision, HDR 400 The dell configuration is: i7-8750H 2.20GHz, 16GB memory, 500GB SSD, Quadro T2000 4GB. Display: 15.6" UltraSharp™ FHD, 1920x1080 Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, Prem Panel Guar 72% color gamut, IPS, Mic The dell is about $300 cheaper. Main use for the laptop will be CAD tools and other engineering related software. edit: also added displays info. [link] [comments] |
I'm a mechanical engineering student and I need a new laptop Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:35 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: 60,000 INR (USD 800). Purchasing in India Do you prefer a 2-in-1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick any that apply A battery life of 4 hours for casual video streaming would be nice. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not much. I'll not be carrying it around a lot. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux Windows 10. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A 15.6" would be good. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, I will be running CAD and CAE software like Inventor, Abaqus, ANSYS etc. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'll mostly play only FIFA and Football Manager, at medium to high settings and 40fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality, should last me 4-5 years. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is going to be my first expensive laptop, the one I have right now cost me around 350 USD. So like I said before, I'd like it to last 4-5 years so I could amortize the cost over that period of time. [link] [comments] |

$1200-$1350
Battery life and specs for the money are both important to me.
I will be carrying it around all day so I prefer it to not be a bulky gaming laptop.
Windows 10
15.6 inches seems to be my favorite.
Light gaming, mostly just for homework and programming.
60fps Med-low is fine for older games and indie titles.
Build quality and a nice keyboard is pretty important to me.
8GB of RAM (16GB of RAM recommended) Intel Core i3+ (or equivalent AMD processor) 256 GB SSD or more of hard disk space A 13" or bigger screen is recommended I would like something with an i5 8th gen or better, and nothing flashy like a 15 pound gaming laptop. [link] [comments] |
I'm paying for college but I don't have enough money for a laptop! Suggestions Posted: 23 Nov 2019 04:00 PM PST I work full time at a hospital nearby and live off campus all to save on time and gas money so I fill up my tank about once every 2-3 weeks. I pay for my car, insurance, my phone, rent and I can only afford 2 classes at a time because tuition increases literally every year. I'm eligible to apply for reimbursement from my job for next semester but I've been doing all of my assignments on my phone since I work so much and rarely have time to walk to the other side of campus to use their computers. I'm considering getting a refurbished laptop but I just wanna make sure I invest my money well in something that will last. Ideally from a brand with really good support and warranty as well. I'm currently dealing with a nightmare caused by the people who fixed my phone screen but damaged other features to be unusable and now refuse to repair it. I need something that I can buy used and add insurance to that also would be good for school work and some amateur coding. I also like to play league so either something with expandable memory or a lot of it. I have pretty shit credit so financing is out of the question and there aren't any strip clubs nearby that I could go and make quick money unfortunately. My college town is pretty isolated. Laptop suggestion for business owner Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:18 PM PST Hi there, I'm looking for a new laptop. As a business owner my typical day to day includes alot of emailing, writing, etc. I use alot of different messaging and project management apps. I also use things like illustrator for graphic design and audio software to create and edit podcasts. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:06 AM PST Hi all, I was going to buy a Lenovo Y540 which had similar specs to this laptop I just found, but not as good looking and definitely not with a screen as good. I'm leaning towards buying this but I have no information on the brand and I can't find any reviews on it discussing the battery and other important things. I'm a first time laptop buyer and I don't live in the US (Currently in Africa) so, sending this back to get it replaced won't be easy, and im not sure if it's a sensible risk to take. Any info on the laptop or the company would really be appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion y540 (2060) vs HP Omen 17t (2060) Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:09 PM PST I already have the Y540 unopened in my room, but now I found this Omen and am wondering if I should switch. Differences are: Screen size obviously, y540 - 1tb ssd/ Omen - 512SSD +1tb HHD and thats a bit it. Both 2060 rtx, both are the same price. Portability, weight, and battery life are not that much of an issue, because it is a desktop replacement for me. [link] [comments] |
HP envy x360 Ryzen 7 3700U/8GB RAM/512 GB ssd Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:05 PM PST Budget: $900 CAD + tax, Canada Form factor: 2 in 1 perferred Battery: does not matter as I'll have it plugged in most of the time Weight: doesn't matter as I'll have it on a table OS: windows Screen size: 15.6 preferred Gaming: No Video editing: No Hi! I'm a student who is looking for a laptop for just basic things like web browsing, streaming, emails and word processing. I came across this Model. It's for $849 after discounts for me (Canadian dollars). Is this a good deal? It comes with the stylus. People say the 13 inch may have thermal issues which is why I'd rather get a 15 inch. But not using it for anything demanding. [link] [comments] |

Best specifications for the money with decent amount of battery life
Would like a maximum weight of 2kg while having a slim profile to be able to fit into my daily backpack
Windows or Mac doesn't matter, most probably windows tho as they provide a better bang for your buck I suppose
A 15 inch screen would be nice.
Gaming such as CSGO, FSX 2020 (coming out soon), Forza Horizon 4. Video and photo editting once in a while with Adobe
I kindda stopped gaming but I plan to continue. Not sure on what games tho but for now its CSGO, FSX 2020 (coming out soon), Forza Horizon 4. Max settings, fps≥60
A good keyboard, reliable build quality, decent battery, good screen, good audio. If possible, atleast a i7, a GTX 20 series, minimum 8GB Ram and 1TB Rom. I'm a newbie for laptops as I've been using custom desktop PC's throughout my life, not really sure which brand to look for as there are tons of brands with different specs at different price points. So I guess here's some information based on the form given [link] [comments] |
